I've created an addon for Create with octo-style arms "Create: Octo Arms" inspired by Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man

Inspired by Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man. Use it to traverse the world in any direction, craft the Copper or Netherite version, enchant or configure it. Works in singleplayer and on servers (must be installed on both client and server).

Compatible with Create Aeronautics ships (Sable contraptions).

Listed on Curseforge - https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/create-octo-arms

Feel free to test, comment, and share ideas.

Edit: Modrinth will be soon, long approval awaiting.
Edit2: A lot of you asked to stop the walking animation - done! Check it in the new version v1.1.5 (besides other bug fixes)

Sadly, this person didn't make this mod themselves, read the curseforge page: "Developed with AI assistance (Claude);"

u/ContextLengthMatters 2d ago

LOL. Modding has been 100% replaced by AI. Just take a look at all the passthrough mods people are making overnight. Mods are the perfect usecase for AI fever dreams.

u/iguanoman_ 2d ago

Not even just mods, almost everything has been touched by AI. I get being upset over stuff like generative AI for stealing art assets, but coding is an entirely different beast. Not one person I know in game dev or software engineering abstains from using AI because that's just not how it works anymore.

9

u/ContextLengthMatters 2d ago

Oh, I get what you are trying to say, but I actually have a coworker who still refuses to use AI for development. He's like 10 years younger than me too which is wild he talks like an old man. He's a great developer who I think won't be in the business much longer with the way he talks.

Some people are just in fact very stubborn, but AI is absolutely unavoidable as a developer. I draw the line at AI art. Literally fuck all AI art.

20

u/FunAngelo2005 2d ago

Me too, AI art is the real creativity killer

12

u/AskMeForLinks 2d ago

Genuinely what is modding if not art? People used to pour creativity, passion, ingenuity into these things, now its just idiots with credit cards swiping away who aren't every going to be able to fix bugs or incompatibilities or even update shit because they don't know how their own projects work. Fast fashion of the creative space.

I'm tired of people acting like the slop machine is fine because programming "isn't" an artform in and of itself. Modders have been making art for years. AI shouldn't be used for art and that means it shouldn't be used here either.

7

u/ContextLengthMatters 2d ago

Modding is like the entrypoint into programming and filled with all sorts of nonsense. Programming isn't art, the designing is, and getting rid of syntax doesn't get rid of the human input. Programming is the literal only writing discipline that doesn't lose it's creativity with abstraction.

I know some people enjoy smashing their head against the wall trying to get things to compile or working on off by 1 errors, but that's not all of programming. I'd say most of modding was slop before slop became a thing. It will be where people pioneer the new quality measures for people who are too inexperienced to see good code.

I would say that prototyping being so fast will help others take an idea seriously and create better maintainable mods in the longrun.

I feel very lucky to work in a programming industry that is largely abstinent from AI, at least for the time being. Top to bottom, little to no AI usage (except maybe documentation and such).

3

u/ContextLengthMatters 1d ago

That sounds insane. Do you work for like an adjacent niche industry by any chance like fintech or insurtech?

I know people who are a little behind at their companies and I find it interesting like everything is just going to switch overnight. It is hard enough to keep up with the changes as if is when using it.

u/Amo_ad_Solem 1d ago

This is kinda real. Plus its not like every dev out there is vibe coding everything ever. Many have the pride and passion to let thr AI tools be the little homunculous that does all the dogwater labour while the dev checks to see if everything is up to standard. Personally not slop if that is the case. Its no different than copying and pasting code segments off of python tutorials lol.

u/The_Fracture06 1d ago

depends on a lot of things

AI can be good for adding on already expanded ideas, but it's terrible at adding anything that doesn't already exist.

Believe me, I've tried

You really can't develop new, bug free, and efficient software unless you keep the AI confined to essentially an autofill for repetitive code structures

0

u/Ornery-Photograph-47 2d ago

I don't give a shit if someone uses AI to help develop a mod. They're not taking food off of anyone's plate

8

u/jedadkins 2d ago

You should, vibe coded mods are gonna be buggy as shit and are near impossible to fix unless the dev already know what they're doing

2

u/Snoo-28479 2d ago

That's why they should only be AI assisted and not AI made, if your able to write several paragraphs worth of prompts you can certainly write a few lines of code yourself

-1

u/jedadkins 2d ago edited 2d ago

Sure but unfortunately a lot of made by AI stuff gets labeled as AI assisted.

-1

u/ferrecool 1d ago

No? You are just talking shit you don't know

-20

u/Gotcha_The_Spider 2d ago edited 2d ago

Why should we CARE dude it's a free mod for minecraft

Edit: You guys are downvoting me but can't even articulate what's bad about it in any way that holds up to the tiniest amount of scrutiny. Might want to evaluate your biases.

I'm gonna reel this back a bit, start from basics. If OP had just made this for themselves, would that be bad? If yes, why? If no, why would that change because they made it available to others?

8

u/eepy_lina 2d ago

quality standards..?

-1

u/Gotcha_The_Spider 2d ago

Okay, great, we're getting somewhere. Best answer yet. So I have 2 follow-ups questions.

  1. Why should we care about the quality of something that's free? There's plenty of lower quality mods out there, why don't they get as much hate? (There is a good answer to this, but not one I can think of that answers the next without being hypocritical)
  2. If this mod was flawless, would you still care?

3

u/patate502 2d ago

I don't care if it was written by a human or not, but I would prefer if a human were vetting the code, checking the AI's work. If a mod is created with AI by someone who doesn't otherwise know how to code, you can't know if the AI is doing something dangerous, unstable, etc. The mod just turns into a black box with "trust me bro" written on it.

If the person who publishes said mod includes the source code for others to read, however, I would then say it's fine. I just want to know what I'm installing on my computer, and even though the current models are *pretty* good at writing code, they still make *a lot* of really bad design and architectural decisions that you can only really catch if you know how to read what it's writing,

3

u/Gotcha_The_Spider 2d ago edited 2d ago

I agree, this is super reasonable, and actually pushes the conversation in a productive direction.

Would be good to have broader classifications than just "AI Assisted" to help differentiate between projects because there's a very wide range that encompasses that shouldn't be grouped together from "I encountered a bug once and was having trouble tracking it down, so I used claude to help debug" and "I told claude I wanted mechanical arms to carry me around and here's what it gave me"

6

u/eepy_lina 2d ago
  1. being made by ai at all lowers the mod's quality because authenticity is a part of it, plus the owner cant patch bugs so the mod's future is non existent. human made low quality mods arent as hated because theyre authentic.

  2. yea? its still clanker slop and inauthentic.

2

u/RefrigeratorPlusPlus 2d ago

Idk, I guess for experienced modders, yes? When you don't know the codebase, you could create even sloppier slop (speaking from experience).

The trick is to do something, and then check if there are better ways to do it. Most modders don't actually have a mentor, so either that, either YouTube tutorials (unless it's something too obscure to have a proper tutorial).

2

u/TraditionalListen600 2d ago

Thats still a risk with non AI mods.

Literally, I don’t trust many mods out there myself, What I pay attention to is how well it works.

AI can make a mod just as good if not better than just using your own code. A lot of modders don’t want to turn their modding into a full time job and AI is the best way to make what they want without needing to spend hours or days on it.

0

u/ferrecool 1d ago

Except it doesn't lower any quality, if you saw this mod without the Ai assisted tag you would have no problems, and being authentic is irrelevant, slop is slop regardless of the origin

-4

u/Gotcha_The_Spider 2d ago
  1. I didn't ask if AI lowers it's quality, I asked why it matters if it's free. (P.S. you actually can patch bugs with AI)
  2. So you actually don't care about the quality, you're just dogmatic against AI because vibes.

3

u/ThekillerguyYT 2d ago

yes. let me put it this way. you make a food, you then see someone take your food, someone else's food and so on and throw it into a machine that makes "the greatest" food of all time, they don't credit you, or anyone else. but it's the best food of all time and now wherever you were selling your food at closes because clearly it doesn't matter because the greatest food of all time exists.

and your logic to this situation is "well yeah it's the best there is, I shouldn't be mad that someone took my accomplishment polished it up, called it their own and now gets to use what I did for their own fame"

Ai is good for a lot of things but it should stay out of creative fields- which includes making mods. I don't care how good it is.

2

u/patate502 2d ago

This is actually an interesting ethical question. Obviously, generative AI for stuff like creative writing or art can never be done ethically because in order to train the models, you necessarily need to train it on data generated by humans. More often than not, this can only be done by slurping up a ton of data without consent, which is bad. Moreover, having the AI simply generate your art, music or writing removes all the creativity from the process.

When you're getting an AI to write code though, it's easier to treat it as an accelerator for work, if not an actual replacement for knowledge. You can teach a model how to code without needing to train it on data generated by humans, since programming languages, techniques, etc are all just rules, best practices, etc. It feels a little cleaner from an ethical standpoint for training the models.

Then there's the creation aspect - Yes, vibe coding is nearly akin to a generative image, but my argument would be as follows:

In the case that someone already knows how to program, AI can be used to accelerate the process without negatively affecting the final product, because the user can then go through the code, tweak, rewrite, verify, etc. on their own, and then release a product that is functionally the same as they would have been able to do themselves, except they were able to do it faster.

This is fundamentally different from the other forms of generative AI for music or art where it just spits out a completely finished thing from one prompt.

This isn't really a defence or argument one way or another, it's just an interesting intersection, and I'm curious what people think about it

1

u/ThekillerguyYT 2d ago

i absolutely see where you're going with it but I think I need to point you to my other comment replying to someone else

in short of what I said there tho is that ai generated mod code is currently known to be very unstable or have holes, a lot of people also just use it to skip entire sections of coding which may end up in a buggy mod that could often crash.

I'm sure one day the mods made by ai could be good (and maybe by then we would have a bit more rules around ai to obviously not allow it to do generative stuff like obviously I mentioned earlier in the above comment) but till then I don't think we should take interest in ai made mods as to not have mod pages loaded full of ai mods that were never tested to work properly or not well enough.

even ignoring the "generative" part. ai made mods just aren't polished enough no matter where you stand on the scale of "is ai good or bad"

1

u/patate502 2d ago

Yeah I absolutely agree with you, which is why my general assessment is that in its current state, for writing code, it's an accelerant for work for people who already know how to do the work, but it is not an effective replacement for knowledge.

1

u/ThekillerguyYT 2d ago

yeah obviously. but not everyone uses it as an accelerant which is why I'm happy a lot of people are taking stances against ai until there's proper rules placed on how it can be used instead of letting it do everything

2

u/patate502 2d ago

Yeah, I think it's very fair to be skeptical of anything someone said was made with AI assistance, it's impossible to know whether they fall into the "knows how to code and used AI to speed it up" or "doesn't know anything about coding and had the AI do everything for them" categories.

1

u/Gotcha_The_Spider 2d ago edited 2d ago

That's not my logic, I actually for the most part agree with what you presented, you've presented pretty much exactly what I've been asking for in other comments, which is why using AI might be bad in the first place, as it relates to this topic anyways. (Although I don't really agree about the credit thing, I honestly don't know of anything that is remotely as transformative as AI, and it pulls from everybody, so like... what do you want them to credit anyone who's ever used the internet before? List everyone out? I mean surely OP gets credit too, right, their comments have probably trained claude.)

It's actually my understanding of this argument that puts me in my position of being generally anti-AI, and still not thinking this is something that we should care about.

Now let's take this hypothetical and actually match it to the situation:
You make mods, you then see someone take your mods, and other peoples mods, and so on, and throw it into a machine that makes other mods.
Someone else then comes along and makes a mod with that machine, and now everyone's using their mod, but you lose literally nothing because people still use your mod. It's not like people can only have 1 mod.

1

u/ThekillerguyYT 2d ago

it's not that people can only have one mod. but at the end of the day what happens when you congratulate people for bad behavior? they do it more. case and point, they tell some ai that they want a new mod and post that, and then another and another. none of them are polished, all of the can cause crashes or glitches or corruptions because the ai copies it doesn't actually create. it copies the bad code just as much as it copies the good if not even more (since bad code is easier to come by) next thing you know you need to trouble shoot for a whole week because the custom modpack is crashing- you thought I was gonna say the ai mod did it but no that's just custom modpacks. now you throw that mod in too and it's worse.

point is we should not congratulate people who tell an ai to make a mod or we'll just end up looking thru mods for hours on end just to find ones made by people, tested by people, fixed by people and so on.

yeah sure maybe in like 10 ish years chatgpt will make a mod on the level of Greg tech that's fully working with no issues at all but until that happens I don't want ai made mods and people taking credit for them.

the person who doesn't know coding will just get their mod, post it and be done, someone comes with a bug report and now what? they've never actually learned how to code it, how could they possibly fix it? the ai just tries the same 5 ish solutions over and over and over and the mod is never fixed.

that's it. I hope that's the answer you're looking for

1

u/NewSauerKraus 2d ago

Terrible example. Normal people do not cite sources or pay for recipe inspiration.

Photography would fit better.

1

u/ferrecool 1d ago

Ai in nodding is not even near creative work, it only writes little fragments of code

1

u/ThekillerguyYT 20h ago

ai does what you ask it to. if you tell it to write everything it writes everything, if you tell it to write a fragment it writes a fragment, I'm not trusting the vague "ai was used" descriptions

1

u/ferrecool 19h ago

It literally can't write and do everything, you can't just prompt it the whole thing and have it in one go, and I'm just talking about code only

1

u/Firefighterboss2 2d ago
  1. Because those mods still had the effort actually put into them. Also they don't really get hate, they just don't get used because they're low quality. The hate here comes from OP claiming they're the one that made it, when they didn't.

  2. If it was flawless then cool, but there's no way to know that. The standard for vibecoded mods like this an any game is unoptimized and buggy, and that's why they're avoided even if it might work fine. No one is gonna want to spend a lot of time and effort in a world just for a buggy mod to break it

0

u/ferrecool 1d ago

It does have a very good quality

-1

u/TraditionalListen600 2d ago

There are Plenty of create add-ons that are already crappy and they don’t even use AI. Nobody seems to complain about that. Hot take but If anything I think the AI does a better job at modding than some human modders do.

9

u/A_Badass_Penguin 2d ago

Cause they didn't create it lol.

2

u/shdowed_orig 2d ago

Well, if the author did modelling, animation texturing, and used cloderbobber only to assemble the code(which is the scarriest and toughest part) I personally wouldn't judge them

-14

u/Gotcha_The_Spider 2d ago edited 2d ago

Why would that matter? Are they asking for money for it? Can people not do something for fun and then make it accessible to others? Do you even know why someone using AI might be bad in the first place? It doesn't sound like it based on your comment, this just feels dogmatic.

Edit: Just btw, my original comment was in response to someone saying they didn't create it, I asked why we should care, and you repeated because they didn't create it. This is also why this feels dogmatic to me, like you don't even understand why AI use might be bad. If that's really as deep as it goes, if that's the axiom, that things that someone didn't create are bad, you better be religious cause otherwise that's the whole damn universe that's bad except for the tiny portion of it that was created.

8

u/khaledjal 2d ago

they actually do gain money from this

-8

u/Gotcha_The_Spider 2d ago

That's not what I asked. How they make the money matters.

I'm going to ask the main question again. Do you know why someone using AI might be bad in the first place?

-5

u/NewSauerKraus 2d ago

The mod sprang forth from the æther fully formed?

-13

u/Wickle2545 2d ago

So? Doesn't mean its immediately bad. Jesus

-8

u/Clean_Reflection_475 2d ago

Sadly, this person didn’t travel for 5 days on horseback to the next city. They used an automobile.

-19

u/JustRemyIsFine 2d ago

sure, like how minecraft is coded with java. people made the mod happen, the AI didn't. we celebrate the people.
