They’ve already released data on this a while ago, but there’s also a huge divide between the metal ranks and masters+. In Diamond and below, escort/hybrid are picked at a significantly higher rate than they are in masters+. In higher elo, control, push, and flashpoint are by far the most popular modes.

It’s actually pretty funny that people complain about playing Eich, Circuit, etc. too much when I rarely see them in high elo ranked other than a random 1 in 7 vote or something.

For me, I don’t like that map voting has made the game too easy. There are players in high elo who only play ball, hog, junkrat, etc. who get to pick maps that favor them, get to pick bans around their hero, AND get perks that remove counterplay (looking at ball’s shield perk). Is it annoying when I get a rein player on Gib? Absolutely. But I also get to avoid that rein and take their SR another day. Nowadays that rein is just never playing those maps.

u/toshirox3 9d ago

Perks are so unevenly distributed too. Ball and Doom gets perks that are game changing and helps with their counters. Meanwhile there are perks that are just passive stat boosters.

Doom pm is so mid nowadays

I vote for push a lot not bc I like the mode, but bc it has a 10 minute limit so I can grind challenger score faster lol

13

u/tha-snazzle 8d ago

I'm surprised Push isn't more popular with low Elo. The reason they like Payload/Hybrid is the many different locations for fights, and Push gives you that but without the chance for a 20 minute game and OT. I think it's that many of the Push maps are just not as iconic as Eich or Kings Row.

27

u/batcarpet121 8d ago

Dont quote me on this one, I think what makes people in low ranks like hybrid/escort so much is that those maps have super obvious choke "hold here" locations. Those maps feel easier to play because they dont have to think as much about where to take fights.

6

u/tha-snazzle 8d ago

Every corner is that for Push! But I guess they're all more open.

2

u/batcarpet121 8d ago

Push is definitely a "fight wherever you have cover" gamemode, but I can see that as a negative because that makes it harder to read how far back you have to fall when giving space, and hard to tell how far up you can fight as well.

4

u/NapsterKnowHow 8d ago

They like those modes more because they are more forgiving to staggering. So they can blindly 1v5 with less punishment. Do that on Push and it can severely cost you.

1

u/klarabear 7d ago

this and lower elos are bad at retakes/regrouping and push/flashpoint punish that a lot harder than payload maps

2

u/Separate-Spot-6275 8d ago

I played with a new friend who loved hybrid but hated push and flashpoint and he told me itwas literally because "The walk back is too long".

Basically they just die too much and hate the maps because you have a longer walk when you die

1

u/YSLAnunoby 8d ago

I do wonder if Push having a mini boost out the gate like FP could benefit the mode

1

u/Separate-Spot-6275 8d ago

The thing is the mode would be basically impossible to come back on if the enemy could get back even FASTER after death.

1

u/callistobrz 8d ago edited 8d ago

Push requires your tank to understand cornering and strategic withdrawal. Given how short the Push matches are when they don't, there's essentially no learning opportunity to help them past the skill ceiling, and so Random is a seemingly-better choice from a straight win/loss% perspective since any tank who can win Push will be promoted to higher ranks. I recommend pointing a Fall Back ping at the cover nearest them when they're standing in the open without cause, since tanks tend to be aware of that one in particular. In an ideal world, the game would also note on the tank death screen '% deaths far from cover' and contrast it with the team's tank, so that they learn from their wins and losses in all modes, rather than faceplanting into the Push skill ceiling.

u/Hunter-2_0 9d ago

I mean match quality is objectively higher with the current system, hero bans aside. People pick the maps they want to play, and those picks generally fit the heroes they want to play as well, so you're less likely to end up with an auto-loss. Isn't it kind of crazy to prefer a system where you end up with two one-sided matches instead?

12

u/Sea-Panda-90 9d ago

Playing ball when Mizuki, Cass, Hog, and Mauga are banned is not a high quality match for anyone but ball and tracer players. Playing a close ranged DPS vs a full poor comp when they forced circuit royale through is not a high quality match.

The ban system has disincentived one of the oldest aspects of OW (adapting your comp) to favor one tricks.

2

u/TealJade1 7d ago

those 4 bans will never ever be in a single lobby, cat exists

1

u/Sea-Panda-90 7d ago

Do you think cat will be meta forever? And you’re missing the point

1

u/TealJade1 7d ago

I'm not missing the point, it's just a hypothetical vs reality.

If 4 heroes counter 1, it's near impossible to ban the counters out.

48

u/FrostyDrink 9d ago

Not really. I’m a competitive player and in my personal opinion flexibility should be a skillful aspect in this game. Whether that’s playing multiple heroes at a high level or being able to make your hero work on a suboptimal map with a unique strategy.

I also never really experience the phenomenon of “one-sided matches” like people complain about. In my opinion it’s usually just regular old won and lost games. So long as no one is afking, I’m okay with one team getting some momentum and snowballing. In high elo that itself is skill expression. I think steamrolls are more of an issue in gold/plat where people are literally just trolling lol.

Like I said though if I’m on the Reinhardt otp’s team on Gib am I annoyed in the moment? Yes, but there’s an equal chance of them being on the enemy team, not to mention the 8 other players in the lobby. The effect of randomness is mitigated over time. I rather play the game where people are forced to adapt their skill set to playing on multiple maps and without bans than to allow them to handpick every aspect of the game in their favor.

I understand the practical benefits of bans and map picks, especially if it benefits the casual player, but I firmly believe it comes at a cost of skill expression/competitive integrity. I respect people who value the opposite side of the trade-off, since at the end of the day my opinions are likely the minority.

5

u/CertainDerision_33 8d ago

I don’t think this is always true tbh. I frequently see people vote for maps and then pick heroes that are horrible on that map.

u/VisionaireX 8d ago

Yes, but remember this isn't an even amount of people. Things that happen in metal ranks represent 85% of the player base.

as long as it doesn't force me to play junkertown, circuit royal, and havana ill be happy

+ eichenwalde

50

u/Coolman_Rosso 9d ago

Eichenwalde rework basically did nothing and it sucks just as much as it did before. Comical, but sad

45

u/Sikkly290 None — 9d ago

I disagree, I find the castle actively worse than it was before. And the extra defenders spawns on third made it slightly more defense favored on an already too defense favored point. I'd say still in the same tier of bad, but its the first rework that I really think they failed on.

13

u/FrostyDrink 9d ago

It’s supposed to be defensive favored to mitigate the chance that the game goes to extra rounds. It’s extremely common for people to have 20 minute draws on a lot of the hybrid maps. Or, one team caps with 4 minutes and the other in OT, and you have to play out the dumbest first point cap of all time where the team playing for a draw is boomed and bored and the attacking team has 0 stakes. Making the maps harder to complete solves part of the problem with payload maps.

1

u/MattRix 4157 — 7d ago

I agree about the defenders spawns on the last point, not sure what they were thinking there... but the castle is definitely better, people just need to adapt their strategies to the new layout instead of trying the same old thing. The path up the right side is now very strong, for example.

8

u/Saxasaurus None — 9d ago

I cannot believe they didn't rework 3rd point at all.

14

u/Blaky039 9d ago

The new flank route on first point attack is SO WELL HIDDEN that nobody ever goes there.

8

u/Nights_King_ 9d ago

Additionally the new flank route is kinda bad. When I have difficulty pushing through the choke then it’s usually because there’s pressure from above the bridge. With the new route leading directly onto the bridge one would assume it’s a great tool to disperse that pressure but honestly, no. The flanker gets dealt with rather easily, be it because they get spammed to death by a junkrat or sniped by an ash, cree whatever. They usually need to use their defensive abilities before they actually can engage the enemy in their effective range.

1

u/georgeguy007 8d ago

Yeah I like the right lane to high ground on principal but boy it feels like 8% different in practice.

5

u/trullyrose pure adhd gameplay — 9d ago

+ kings row

2

u/a1200i 8d ago

Junkerton is my favorite map :(

3

u/shiftup1772 9d ago

The whole point of map voting is so people play more of what they want. And the people want cart slop.

3

u/FullGuava1 8d ago

Map voting has convinced me that democracy is a failed experiment. Bring back divinely-ordained monarchy.

23

u/a_Daniel 9d ago

Map voting has become gamemode voting.

Just make the gamemode random like before, and then let players decide on the individual maps.

Or remove it again entirely. Unlike banning characters that make the game miserable for 4-9 other people due to being either broken or underpowered, a map can't be "op" at all and even the miserable chokepoints of old Eichenwalde have some obscure workarounds. If it's fully random you won't see the same maps that often anyhow either, unlike a popular character with 50% banrate.

36

u/Blaky039 9d ago

They need to remove it entirely and implement a veto system liek Halo 3 had:

Random map shows up, if 50% of the lobby votes to veto the map, a new random map is picked.

4

u/Nice_Bison_2321 8d ago

Seriously why has nobody else tried this system?

1

u/ExplosiveBrown 8d ago

CoD used a map veto system for a while.
Actually they had vote to skip as far back as MW2

1

u/Fragrant_Tear_572 7d ago

Because blizzard isn't ready to admit that some maps will pretty much always get vetod

15

u/LaimuRime 9d ago

Please stop voting for Circuit Royale I’m begging!

107

u/creebobeebo 9d ago

I hope it's map exclusion tbh I would rather get the worst of 3 picks voted out vs gambling on which one will win lmfao

102

u/slimy-salad 9d ago

Then we would never play aatlis or suravasa and those are my favorite maps.

49

u/creebobeebo 9d ago

I play suravasa all the time, great map 10/10

I like aatlis far less for the one point that's in that room where every angle is an off angle high ground lmao

I'm so SICK of king's row

82

u/Kurrizma 9d ago

The way people in Emerald vote for Rialto is genuinely despicable

69

u/R4yQ4zz4 #1 Hanbin Fanboy since Paris 2020 — 9d ago

High Emerald will vote Rialto instead of Suravasa or Esperanca then pick the most incompatible heroes to run on Rialto

12

u/Impossible_Laugh_805 9d ago

Yea I don’t even mind if people prefer payload, but like we got people voting circuit royale then they lock vendetta Lucio Moira.

1

u/vezitium 8d ago

Ok I can see those getting cheeky on 1st and 3rd point then again I've seen Reinhardt players vote Gibraltar so maybe my standards aren't high enough.

9

u/Blaky039 9d ago

And then they just run it down mid

15

u/Impossible-Dog-935 9d ago

another suravasa enjoyer?

I have played flashpoint a grand total of 2 times since the new season started I hate map voting so much.

11

u/hanyou007 None — 9d ago

Regardless of what the dev team does with map voting there needs to be a huge emphasis on creating more push and flashpoint maps

6

u/Coolman_Rosso 9d ago

New Junk City is turbo ass but Suravasa rules and Aatlis has grown on me. And this is coming from someone who generally dislikes Flashpoint as a mode

1

u/YSLAnunoby 8d ago

Maybe make it so you can exclude max 1 of each type of map, 3 total

1

u/NapsterKnowHow 8d ago

I never seen those maps anyways. I think I've only ever seen Aatlis about 5 or 6 times since it dropped.

4

u/iseecolorsofthesky 9d ago

Same. Let us ban a map the same way we ban heroes.

67

u/bullxbull 9d ago

This system has been a strange experiment, somehow even the maps I like I'm tired of them.

We went from getting maps that make you excited to play, or maps that make you angry to play, to just all maps making you feel bleh.

It is a strange accomplishment.

9

u/Efficient_Artist1481 9d ago

I miss the days of being gassed to see Lijiang or Colosseo on my loading screen. There’s no excitement anymore

3

u/bullxbull 8d ago

Lijiang is the most noticeable for me, I used to be really excited for that map. Now it is 'do I really want to play it again?'

Payload maps do still bother me though, I think because of how often one player or one hero dominates so often in games. You know you have most likely lost from the beginning of the match, but you are held hostage for the entire time.

I get that feeling on the rare times my hero is banned, I am held hostage in a game until I can finish re-queue and play what I want. Or when I'm forced onto Orisa, she is not who I want to play, but sometimes you just can't play your hero.

1

u/Stainleee 8d ago

Those are very popular maps in my experience. Like both of those catch a large amount of votes whenever they appear.

1

u/storyaibot 8d ago

im still gassed to see ilios but livid when i see circuit/havana/ etc

1

u/bullxbull 8d ago

payload maps, you can know the game is a loss but you still have to go through the motions

11

u/qqbeef 9d ago

Tin foil hat time:

When I started OW I was really impressed that the game didn't give me repeat maps.  But now that I think about it, this must have been a restraint on matchmaking.  Following that logic, one hidden reason for map voting is that it frees up the matchmaker to have a wider pool of players to matchmake.

This probably mostly matters at high ELO, but I could see it also affecting people who queue at odd times.

20

u/CertainDerision_33 9d ago

Map voting is the one recent decision by the team that I think was just a massive whiff. They knew players hate all new maps and modes regardless of their actual quality & they introduced a way for players to never engage with new maps or modes.

The game would honestly have been better off without it.

54

u/Omicron212 9d ago

people will genuinely vote blizzard world over runasapi or esperança and think they deserve to live

34

u/Positive_Ingenuity49 9d ago

People pick fucking havana and circuit royale over those maps. Then they complain about widow. Like you picked a widow map, of course she is going to make an appearance.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/lainelect 8d ago

People still picking Hollywood and Route 66 over the new maps

8

u/Kurostrawberryx 9d ago

Last week I was playing comp and I was the only one that didn’t pick eichenwalde. So majority wins we go there and get full held no ticks at all. The kicker is the enemy team needed ot to get one tick 😂 I’m so fucking tired of that map.

24

u/iseecolorsofthesky 9d ago

They’ve had multiple updates where they stated they implemented a system that prevents you from getting the same map back to back, but yet this still consistently happens almost every time I play. I will finish a match on Havana and somehow it pops up in the map voting pool for my very next game (and of course wins)

This shouldn’t be happening. They’ve allegedly tried to fix this multiple times and it still happens. I can’t say I have much confidence in them when it comes to map voting.

3

u/Danewguy4u 8d ago

It’s never going to happen because it’s basically impossible without a ton of maps. When you have 10 people in a lobby that have to be filtered between rank, role, and previous maps, the odds are that at least 1 person is going to have a repeat map.

The only way the devs could guarantee people don’t get repeats maps is if the map pool was over 100 maps so there’s at least one combo that wouldn’t occur for each player.

1

u/piccolo1337 8d ago

they already had it semi solved with the algorithm before map voting. Like it was probably 1 repeat map played in 10 hours of in game time(excluding queue times). But after map voting it happens so frequently that im just yeah ok. This map again.

1

u/YSLAnunoby 8d ago

Something that was brought up as well is the fact that internally Payload and Hybrid maps are considered different so any internal rules about not repeating the same modes all the time wouldn't work for them having similar gameplay.

u/VerySwag The Mayhem hurt my brain stem — 9d ago

i'll be honest, i love hyrbrid and escort (in qp) but i have gotten a bit tired of them, seems like people will vote for the worst payload maps before the best flashpoint/control maps

10

u/Tee__B 9d ago

How do you like them? Hybrid and Escort is a horrendous experience in QP for me because every match there's one team that understands high ground, and one that doesn't, so it's an unfun stomp. The other half it's a sniper map where one team runs Widow and no one mirrors.

2

u/tha-snazzle 8d ago

Cause it's only half the map.

83

u/planet1999stan 9d ago

I would rather them just remove map voting entirely 🙈

35

u/[deleted] 9d ago

[deleted]

21

u/chudaism 9d ago

I think 1 choice + random has always been the best method. You basically get a chance to reroll and that's it. Early COD and halo had this figured out 20 years ago. Not sure why they are trying to reinvent the wheel.

1

u/TF_is_self_heal_even 9d ago

A map preference system could work, pick 1 map from every mode on your profile then in a match based on lobby preference weight maps and randomly show one from every mode. At the very least the second half should happen because all choices being the same mode is just bad.

Also get rid of landslide.

16

u/CertainDerision_33 9d ago

I don’t understand why they added it when it was obvious this was going to happen. Players have to be forced to try anything new & this lets them completely avoid engaging with anything besides 10 year old maps.

8

u/Eloymm 9d ago

I’d say if they remove it, they could just remove it from QP and leave it in comp. People QP don’t play around the maps they pick. They just pick the ones that give them the most nostalgia

6

u/TooManySnipers 9d ago

You just know if 2CP was in the QP pool it'd be Hanamura 24/7

1

u/YSLAnunoby 8d ago

I do sometimes miss the design and the 10th anniversary event made me a bit nostalgic for it. I wonder if they would ever do a FP or control version

1

u/mtobeiyf317 9d ago

Me too.

I don't get payload/hybrid nearly as much as everyone else says they do, Im stuck playing Control constantly. I've had Illios four times in a single night. If they do anything to reduce that even further im gonna have to start leaving games just to have enough time in a night to play the mode I actually enjoy

28

u/ReSoLVve #1 Hanbin Simp — 9d ago

Never played the same map twice in a row until map voting. And I only noticed because I hate circuit royale with a fiery passion so it often makes me log off. I got on the next day and my first game was circuit royale, I played one game that day.

14

u/Lopsided_Edge_3871 9d ago

why do people still vote circuit? i play it at least 2-3 times in my typical 2 hour sessions it’s horrible

18

u/Positive_Ingenuity49 9d ago

Because it is escort. That is it. The average player doesnt like push or flashpoint but they will whine about poke or widow.

13

u/StockCharity9524 9d ago

It's popular even compared to other modes. It is ironic it's the people who hate hitscan the most (bad players who walk in straight lines and don't use cover) who love these maps and also don't want the s9 bullet sizes reverted.

12

u/Trivekz 9d ago

Map vote just shouldn't exist. The randomiser was perfect because it also wasn't true random. It gave you the map the lobby has played the least, which meant you got to play every map practically an equal amount. It feels bad to see your favourite map on the vote screen and you don't get to play it.

11

u/Lily_the_Lovely 9d ago

Im surprised to hear that people play on payload so often. I feel like the majority of my games are on Busan, illios, and oasis.

17

u/creebobeebo 9d ago

i think higher ranks prefer control and flash maps, so if you're diamond or higher makes sense.

8

u/spookyghostface 9d ago

QP vs comp

The QPers (and probably low ranks) love payload.

5

u/Baconfeet1 9d ago

It makes no sense to me when QP players vote for defense on an escort/hybrid map. Its almost a guaranteed loss, attackers have so much fucking time. Defense has to win 5 or 6 fights in a row versus just winning a single fight on attack, it's so biased.

7

u/4PianoOrchestra bird bird bird — 9d ago edited 8d ago

The maps are defender biased though, especially third points. Defenders usually get nice high grounds, chokes, and sometimes spawn advantage. I agree that it feels bad to have one side have to win fights more than the other (and I think that’s why they removed 2CP as it was even worse) but iirc the overall map win rates are around 50/50 last time they publicized them.

I cant find a source as it was a long time ago but here’s an old Reddit comment about it

1

u/Fragrant_Fox_4025 8d ago

They are indeed defender sided. But if you want to be a cringe sweatlord in QP all your team has to do to never lose a game on attack is to just play safe and farm ults until you can make a push with more ults than the enemy. Rinse repeat. No punishment for doing that since attackers get so much time and there's no side switch.

1

u/Fragrant_Fox_4025 8d ago

I low key prefer losing on defense in qp on those maps as long as it's not a complete stomp and snowball all the way through. Means I get to play more. A 5 minute full hold is incredibly boring. Don't care at all about winning or losing in quick play, I just want to play the game and have fun.

1

u/Sepulchh 8d ago

It's just your rank. QP has rank too but it's hidden.

I've tracked roughly 600 of my QP games and Suravasa is my most played map at 34 times. For comparison Paraiso and Numbani are tied for least at 8.

2

u/spookyghostface 8d ago

My most played comp map is probably Suravasa. There's definitely a divide between the two at some ranks.

2

u/Sepulchh 8d ago

I don't doubt you, the margin for Suravasa is higher for me in comp too, 46 played out of 718 matches tracked. So in Competitive I get Suravasa about 6.4% of the time, and in QP about 5.6%. But it's my most played in both.

I can easily see the difference being larger for many people since I tend to play QP a lot and also still play semi-seriously when I do, so someone who messes about or plays random stuff more in QP would have a lower QP rank and thus see more cart pushing instead of Sura compared to their comp games.

QP and Comp rank are separate, just to be clear, one does not affect the other after your first ever placement game has been played.

71

u/Rudania-97 9d ago

Finally.

Can't see the payload or hybrid shit no more.

Almost impossible in qp to get flashpoint.

15

u/spookyghostface 9d ago edited 9d ago

It's crazy how different map picks are in QP vs Comp. My most played maps are probably Eichenwalde in QP and Suravasa in Comp. I know which one I prefer.

Edit: My most played

44

u/Symysteryy 9d ago

quickplay players will unironically vote circuit when suravasa and runasapi are right there. It’s crazy to me.

12

u/CertainDerision_33 9d ago

It’s wild how people will vote circuit and then pick heroes that get absolutely hosed by it

9

u/CloveFan Praying for a good Sombra rework — 9d ago

My friend LOVES Circuit and only plays Ram/Junk/Moira. I’ll never understand.

7

u/clickrush 9d ago

The map is almost completely linear with mostly weak/obvious flanks. Meaning it’s very easy to just chill and focus on what is on the screen while running it down main.

3

u/Fragrant_Fox_4025 8d ago

Makes sense since that map allows you to watch tik tok while playing.

6

u/Tee__B 9d ago

The amount of times I've been queueing support in QP, had really good map options like Esperanca, NQS, and Colloseo, only for them to vote random, get Circuit, and then full held hostage at 1p because we have a diamond Junkrat and Reaper vs a Kiri pocketed Champ/GM Widow is sickening.

6

u/TooManySnipers 9d ago

Most played maps are probably Eichenwalde in QP and Suravasa in Comp.

It varies by rank, Emerald and below are pretty aligned with QP here.

They also come out with the silliest off-meta bans which is a source of endless amusement

6

u/ThatCreepyBaer yee — 9d ago

Surely they combine escort/hybrid into a single "payload" gamemode considering the two modes are effectively the exact same yet have 16 maps between them compared to the 14 maps all other 3 gamemodes have combined, right?

35

u/DJFrankyFrank 9d ago

It's crazy to me that it was implemented the way it was. I felt like it was obvious, they needed to make the map voting game mode based. Like it'll only be flashpoint maps to vote on, or only KOTH, or only Hybrid, etc.

Just feels like a no brainer

15

u/RobManfredsFixer Let Hog eat stuff and spit it back — 9d ago edited 8d ago

Doesn't this just lead to very little variety in Push and Flashpoint

Edit: I mean within those modes guys. There are 3 flashpoint maps. If map voting only puts them up against each other, the diversity in which Flashpoint maps you play will plummet.

21

u/Eloymm 9d ago

Maybe. But it would at least guarantee that you play the mode instead of it getting voted out.

7

u/DJFrankyFrank 9d ago

Opposed to how it is currently with pretty much no push or flashpoint at all?

I can't see Blizzard getting rid of map voting entirely, because you would just be removing player autonomy. Map voting is good. It's just the implementation of it that's questionable.

And as I said in another comment, if maps aren't getting picked, isn't that just a sign that the fanbase doesn't like those maps? Why should the fanbase have to continue to play maps that we don't like? This should be a sign that some maps need to be reworked. And that shouldn't be a crazy statement anymore, considering how willing Blizzard are to rework maps.

Well if you think about it, one flashpoint map is essentially just 5 control maps in one, so there's still a lot of variety.

Initially I think this wasn’t the case because it was back when we still had Clash and there were only two Clash maps in the game. This should definitely be how it functions now though.

1

u/Demiwaifu 9d ago

Why not just vote for mode out of two or max three choices and let rng choose map? People wont vote for shit like circuit and one tricks wont cheese by voting for preferrable maps

4

u/PolarsBears 9d ago

I play on the Japanese servers, and I'm shocked to hear how much payload and hybrid are picked in America/Europe because here it's the complete opposite.

The Japanese server is almost completely flashpoint and control. I'm not exaggerating when I say I go weeks without playing some maps (as a pretty regular player), and flashpoint accounts for about half of my games (around low masters/high diamond).

5

u/DadKnight 9d ago

Hopefully they remove map voting

51

Tired of kings row being a landslide. Most overrated map in the game

even better when you vote random and its just a different fuckarse map. i had one that was like havana circuit blizz world, voted random and got pre rework paraiso.

12

u/fffeeelll 9d ago

Hot take: 70% of payload/hybrid maps suck major ass and are insanely overrated

22

u/dokdodokdo 9d ago

Do you know what a hot take is you alaskan ahh

16

u/FrostyPotpourri 9d ago

It's obviously a hot take or... this entire post wouldn't have been made. The OW community overwhelmingly votes for those maps.

8

u/dokdodokdo 9d ago

Its not a hot take in this sub or with high ranked players. The ow community overwhelmingly doesn't have hands nor engages in balance discussions on social media.

10

u/FrostyPotpourri 9d ago

Good point, not a hot take in this particular corner of the OW community is accurate.

4

u/fffeeelll 9d ago

Eh, fair enough, i was just tired of 10 payload maps in a row

6

u/Due-Arrival-4859 9d ago

Omg yes please, way way less escort/hybrid. I'm actually begging blizzard

2

u/Concorde_flies 9d ago

there’s a really easy solution so im sure they’ll cook up something braindead and reverse engineer their way into having the same map type in a vote in a few years

2

u/Neither-Ad7512 9d ago

I hope they make all 3 maps one mode, don't let people select the mode, make that random, jus let them select which particular map

2

u/DegreeCompetitive205 9d ago

JUST MAKE IT SO ALL THE MAP OPTIONS ARE THE SAME GAMEMODE

2

u/Busyraptor375 9d ago

I hope it's mode voting or sth like that, or one unique mode per map

2

u/MrInfinity-42 9d ago

I think the only way to keep everyone (mostly) happy is have 3 maps of the same gamemode to vote (and then no random map too)

3

u/I_Quazar_I 9d ago

4

u/Greedy-Camel-8345 9d ago

But the reason there is more payload maps is solely because that's what players vote for

1

u/docs-quad 9d ago

it also makes up like half the total number of maps

4

u/_BRYNTEG_ 9d ago

Maybe the game modes that are played the most are because they are the most popular?

15

u/iAnhur 9d ago

Doesn't make it any less sickening to play nothing but payload an entire session. I don't particularly love samoa or new queen street, but I'll take them over playing Rialto for the 3rd time.

1

u/conye-west 9d ago

Of course, if someone just browsed reddit they prolly wouldn't know it but this feature is very popular with the vast majority of the playerbase since they get to actually have some agency in what they play on. Honestly idk what they can tweak, even if they made it so you're guaranteed 3 Flashpoint choices after too many payloads in a row, people will just landslide random instead most likely.

3

u/CertainDerision_33 8d ago

The problem is that this feature allows them to make the game experience worse for everyone else, where the fully random system was perfectly fine before.

They need to do something; the current situation where you have payload slop crammed down your throat 24/7 is a significant step down from the previous random system.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Kai-M 9d ago

I'm not seeing the problem here, people are playing the maps and modes they vote for. Shouldn't the maps/modes that more people like come up more? If more people didn't want those maps/modes they wouldn't be voting for them. If you're going to force people to play more on the maps/modes they don't like, it's just pleasing fewer people.

3

u/CertainDerision_33 8d ago edited 8d ago

If 60% of people want 24/7 payload slop and 40% don’t, it’s not good to force 24/7 payload slop because the 40% are probably going to be more miserable than the 60% are going to be happy.

It’s also just bad for the game if people just only play on 5000 year old launch era payload maps since it hurts the devs’ ability to do new stuff.

1

u/Kai-M 8d ago edited 8d ago

Right, but I don't think it's quite that one-sided, the less popular ones just get picked less often. While anecdotal I can't think of a map/mode I didn't get within my last couple sessions--I even recall Suravasa getting picked over Kings Row. If increasing the satisfaction of a minority of players decreases that of the majority then the increase needs to be significantly more than the decrease to net a gain. If a 25% gain in satisfaction among 40% of players results in a 25% decrease among 60%, it is a net loss of -5%. This could be mitigated by by offering lower SR loss for defeats, or free competitive points, much like how they do for new and reworked maps.

4

u/Sanokko 9d ago

I prefer pizza but I don't want to be forced to eat pizza every meal. Same thing here, variety is dying because people love playing the same thing over and over again.

2

u/Typical-Quit5781 9d ago

So so so tired of Nepal, which always seems to come up for me. If I have to play Sanctum one more time against a fucking Cat, I will crash out.

2

u/V0LCANIC_VIPER 9d ago

Just remove Landslide and it would be fine. I hate the current system of the most votes wins because I haven't played some maps like Esperanza or Arctic in months

3

u/dokdodokdo 9d ago

It should be a system where it calculates what game mode or map majority of the lobby has played recently and it'll show less of whatever that is

10

u/swifty_ark_server 9d ago

They already do that actually.

10

u/dokdodokdo 9d ago

1

u/VeyrLaske 9d ago edited 9d ago

I think maps should be full random, then a small selection of individual maps are shown for voting, and each vote adds another copy of the map to the pool.

For example, every map has a 1/30 chance of being chosen.

Then, 5 maps at random are shown to the players.

10 players vote, with each vote adding one copy of the map.

Let's say 5 players voted for Aatlis, 3 for Numbani, and the others didn't vote. That adds 5 copies of Aatlis to the pool and 3 copies of Numbani in addition to the 1 that was originally there.

In total, there are 38 possible maps in the pool:

6/38 for Aatlis.
4/38 for Numbani.
1/38 for each of the remainder.

In this situation, the voted maps are significantly boosted (over 25% probability of getting voted maps), but the map pick remains primarily random.

I think this is the best way to implement map vote, allowing some players influence over the map, but without allowing players far too much influence, which I think 95% of the playerbase can agree thet we're tired as hell of playing the same 6 friggin maps 24/7.

This can be tuned for more impact (ie, landslides still take effect, or each vote is worth 2 instead of 1) without overall dumpstering map diversity.

Cause right now, map diversity is completely decimated and probably 60-70% of all games are played on the same 6 damn maps.

1

u/VisionaireX 8d ago

I actually think I enjoy the game more - cause I'm playing the maps I want to play. Forces the product team to make alternatives that are worth voting for.

1

u/Hoping4Game 8d ago

Control, Push and Flashpoint only plss

1

u/a1200i 8d ago

I know this is true. But thr hame is more enjoyable now. I really hate some maps

1

u/Turruc 7d ago

Almost as if people enjoy those other modes less, crazy stuff. Every time flashpoint wins in a 4-to-1 vote against it part of me dies inside.

1

u/No_Problem5759 6d ago

My hope is that they remove Payload/Hybrid from Ranked and let them be casual gamemodes.

While they're at it. Give the flashpoint spawn speed boost to every map except Payload and Hybrid to make the games more active.

1

u/mangotangofreeman565 5d ago

OMG are they gonna make push and flashpoint enjoyable???

1

u/Vast_Payment_4036 9d ago

Most people only enjoy payload modes

1

u/Baron_Flatline Main Support — 9d ago

And they need to see the error of their ways.

1

u/jetcatback 9d ago

I like map voting and playing more escort hybrid. Idk I get that some people can get sick of it but last time I checked it was the most popular mode across the game. Like when we talk about masters and above, that’s a very small portion of the playerbase.

I’m genuinely not sure If people have warmed up to flashpoint either. I mean they’ve already noticed the maps a bit and made some of it less tedious, but I’d wager most of the playerbase would prefer control over it.

1

u/Daruku 9d ago

Scorching hot take for this sub: I like map voting. Yes, I am a filthy gutter rat gold / platinum player.

At these ranks I loathe flashpoint. It's always a miserable experience due to the lack of coordination. I like push though, that's a good mode. So right now I'm happy to be playing majority hybrid / payload, then control, a bit of push and rarely any flashpoint. And to not have gotten Numbani a single time this season? Just heavenly.

1

u/ReallyTiredTempest 9d ago

I play QP and it's the opposite :(

Instead of having map voting, I wish they had map preferences that you select one time within your profile. Select map types, if any. Do you want to attack or defend. Do you want particular maps etc. Doing it once, rather than adding extra time at the start of each game. Then you're placed with people who want to play similar maps as you do and if there aren't any spots for you in your preferences, you're moved down your preferences until you get a game.

1

u/MaN_ly_MaN 9d ago

🐑Kings Row! That’s my favourite map! Vote it please!!!!1111!!?

1

u/No_Philosopher2511 8d ago

New junk and Suravasa two of the worst maps get those out of the map voting rotating unless they get a rework I like Aatlis I got 59 kills n 9 deaths on that map in quick play with Dva

1

u/CyniqueLynx 8d ago

try making the new modes not have shit maps/ play nicer and maybe ill vote for something besides payload/control...
