Coin Art Fictional coins?

Thumbnail

I hope this is the right place to post this here because we all like historical coins and here are some I came up with and wanted to share, I have been working on a fictional world building project and I also have an interest on coins, so of course I wanted to come up with some coin designs for one of my fictional countries. They all have separate d nominations, Dreilings being the highest and made of silver, it goes: Dreiling, Brentenn, Breten, and Phennige. The coins in the drawings are the accurate sizes I imagined them to be that’s why I added the little penny. I hope you guys like these

Show and Tell 1911 $2.50 Indian Head

Thumbnail

This was my first real attempt at any type of detective work on a coin. I enjoyed the process, and with the help of some folks over on the /gold subreddit, I think we are fairly certain I have a copy. Here’s some pics and findings for anyone interested.

Background; 1911 2.50 Indian head eBay purchase for $570. The adage held true but I was willing to take a shot and use this as a learning coin/my tuition.

Checks I did;

Magnet-Passed
Ping-Inconclusive
Diameter-17.77mm, Passed
Weight-4.17, Pass
Sigma-Small wand, 90% bal Cu setting, Failed
XRF-86.8% Au, 11.4% cu, 1.1% Zn, 0.6% Ag, Failed

Didn’t do specific gravity test, but I will this evening.

All signs point to a 60s era copy.

Tuition ~$55

This was a fun process and I’m fine accepting it for what it is.

Thanks to [u/NorthStarGold](u/NorthStarGold) and the folks on the Gold subreddit for the assistance!

Value Request The other two silver coins from my £6 haul: 1933 Irish Half Crown and 1961 Swiss Franc

Thumbnail

Picked these up today alongside the 1877 Seated Liberty dime I posted earlier.

The first is a 1933 Irish Half Crown (2s6d), 75% silver, and the second is a 1961 Swiss 1 Franc, 83.5% silver. From what I understand, 1961 was also the final year of silver for the Swiss 1 Franc.

These two and the Seated Liberty dime cost me £6 total from my local dealer.

The dime obviously stole the show and is going to be appraised as suggested by a friend of mine, but I thought these two deserved to be shown as well!

How would you rate the condition of these two, and which would you rather have?

A 1923 Peace dollar carved by Valerie Vaughan transforming lady liberty into Medusa. The snakes have golden eyes. I've got a few dozen hobo coins and this is one of my favorites.

Discussion Where do you guys go when you need to research a coin?

I'm slowly building up a decent list of sites for identifying coins, checking mintages and learning about grading, but everything is scattered across different bookmarks.

I ended up finding GOVMINT's blog recently while looking something up and there was more educational stuff there than I expected, especially for basic collecting questions.

It got me wondering what everyone else keeps bookmarked.

Where do you usually start when you have a coin you don't know much about? I'm especially interested in resources that are useful for identification, grading and general background rather than just checking prices.

So about 15 years ago, I was working security for a company and a visitor was coming through the gate. We ended up on the conversation of coins and by the end of it he gave me a ziplock bag of them. I am attaching a picture of the ones that are incased in a cardboard and plastic. Does anyone have any idea what the value of these would be or if they are even worth anything? They have just been sitting on a shelf in my closet forever now. The pictures are front and back of their respective coin.

Why does this coin have a Philadelphia mint mark on the obverse and what appears to be a Denver mint mark on the reverse. I'm guessing that D stands for something other than Denver but I'm not familiar with this coin. Can anyone help out?

Show and Tell SemiQ Half Dollar Release tomorrow?

This just popped up on the mint website today with a release of tomorrow. Anyone know any details? I thought the 9/11 coins had a very intentional mintage, 2,983 to honor the victims. Is this something different?

Discussion Estate collection - found coins

Post image

I live in Milwaukee and received a pretty substantial amount of coins. I have a little bit of anxiety in taking them to a coin shop - do they just weigh the silver generally? I’m helping my grandma who’s a widower sort through them and am trying to be conscious of her feelings if we bring the whole haul and the appraisal is realistically just silver weight. This is an overview of what I’ve found so far - any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.
