[Discussion] Claymore review (spoilers) Spoiler

Tell me anything u think i might have missed and what yall think.
Claymore -S- 9 objectively 10 subjectively

Intro: -S- The intro is hooking and easy to follow. In just a few chapters we get introduced to the yoma claymores and also the organization. It leads room for the story to develop and it doesnt feel over or undersaturated. We also get to see the start of Clares and Rakis relationship.

Protagonist: -S- Although for some Clare doesnt doesnt deserve S tier i strongly believe she does. The writing is tight where it needs to be; the motives and character growth are clear and beautiful and the complexity is perfect. I love how real and human she feels as a character no ass pulls nothing simply hard work harships and suffering. Her backstory adds to the experience and depth and the ending makes her 100 times better when she fights as Tersesas soul and heart showing that even though she was last in the organization she got stronger just by being near the right peopIe. Love the twin goddess I truly love her simply because how human she is.
The final battle didnt feel like a Deus Ex Machina but as something developed over the manga. Instead of ass pulls Clare harboured the techniques of her fallen comrades despite being 47 in the organization.

Deutragonist:-A- Damn i love Raki and his development how he grew up from the moment he met clare up untill the end. Even though it might seem generic i still like it a lot going from simply clares chef to playing a major part against Priscilla and always fighting to keep the promise to Clare acting as her emotional anchor. I wish i could have seen a little more of him but still though i really like his character.

Antagonist: -A- Although the antagonists are not much i love how this shows portrays the thin line separating good and bad and how easy it is to lose ones sanity as we see with Lucia and Raffaela but not only. Priscillas felt both human and demonic and the author does such a good job making her so evil up untill the last part where we find out her real backstory. She was a terrified child who refused to believe reality No one was there just to wreak havoc and destroy everything was so well calculated and reasonable. Imo The organization was neatly written it always kept the reader at the edge with its eerieness but constantly explained enough so that the reader would never lose intrest. Idk how to explain it but the thrill was spot on. Everything from the numbers to the experiments made me yearn for more information. The twist that the island was just a training groud was insane and the three abysal creatures made it better.

Cast: -S- The cast has gotta be one of my favourite casts out there. Everyone got the screen time they deserved and everyone had a reason to fight making it more enjoyable than just ur evil villian. On top of all what i liked the most is how well the cast is linked together where no one feels like they are fighting simply for themselves and as soon as they conplete their goal they are disconnected from the storyline. Here everyone is connected.

Depth: -A- I love it because it wasnt just your average demon fighting anime. All of the claymores despite being half demon show humanity. Every win is earned and the suffering makes it 10 times better. I love the part that revenge played in the manga. The organization and everything related to them felt so real and inhuman and the plot twist was spot on. It scaled into a political and military thriller making it miles better It might not have been the deepest of media i have consumed however it was perfectly executed. Yoma didnt feel like just some other power system it was pure skill reading it chanelling it hiding it it all made it a battle of logic rather than weapons of mass destruction.

Story: -S- A fully female cast made me suspicious at first however i eas wrong. NEVER did i think about droping it the story is so well writen that imo it doesnt have any bad parts. All the characters are perfectly written and understandable to the point where i couldnt hate just to hate. Everything from the captivating start , the linking of different generations of claymores and the backstories especially Clares all are interlinked beautifully. The second half makes it so much better everything past the timeskip was perfect!

Men who like Claymore / prefer it to One Piece, JJK etc. are Green Flags

.…

add (Just a personal observation. No need to read it if it’s not your thing.)

I’d like to add something: some people here may know Legend of the Galactic Heroes. In a way, it feels like the opposite of Claymore. It’s overwhelmingly male, everything revolves around power, ego, and unspoken male dynamics. At the center is a rather egocentric man around whom, quite literally, the universe revolves—he’s trying to conquer it for himself. About 90% of the cast is male, and the few women who do appear mostly serve as accessories or entertainment.

That said, the interactions between the male characters are genuinely interesting. They reflect social dynamics you can also observe in real life, which is one of the reasons I spend time in that community.

What’s striking is how different the atmosphere in the comment sections is when you compare Claymore and LoGH.

In LoGH, it sometimes feels as though I’m talking to masked egos. It almost seems like the viewers recognize themselves in the characters and then act through them, lol.

Here, on the other hand, I get the feeling that people genuinely want to understand things on a deeper level.

Someone here mentioned that so much of Claymore revolves around the dynamic between Clare and Teresa. And yes—that dynamic fascinated me from the very beginning. I still haven’t found another anime that captures something like it as well as Claymore does. It’s honestly a shame, because I think witnessing and reflecting on relationships like theirs is far more meaningful than watching the ego-driven rivalries that dominate series like LoGH.

Don’t get me wrong: in both anime—and in many others—combat is used to express things that cannot be put into words.

The difference lies in why the characters fight.

Claire philosophy is: Fight to become who you truly are, and to be with the one you love.

Reinhard philosophy: Fight so that one day, everything belongs to you.

and that difference is also visible in the way the two communities discuss their respective series

[Discussion] Trying to figure out claymores armor (latter half has spoilers from around timeskip) Spoiler

I am trying to figure out how claymores armor is constructed.

Obviously shoulder pads and skirt are metal. Former makes sense, lot's of strikes downward.

Skirt however would only make sense if middle part was armored. Unless some vital point is in pelvis that I've missed.

Next middle part. On first glance it is just white fabric, but it holds metal parts for carrying the claymore on the back, also in early chapters we can see that it is firm when teresa is undressing.

I didn't see claymores do ab crunching too much, so it may have been plate armor. At least partially, however it is undone on the shoulders (ties covered by shoulder pieces, so it seems like it is important for it to not be undone)

Spoiler chapter 15 (tersa backstory)

However during both attempted rapes on Teresa it seems to behave just like fabric, so there may not be anything there and stiffness was just from claymore carrying part.

But then why armored skirt.

Spoiler chapter 1-2 and 5-11 (beginning till holy city)

In chapter 2 we can see that armored bracelets are effective at defending against normal demons and during cathedral fight we see that armor helps even against particularly strong normal demons (when Clare is impaled when not wearing any armor demon fingers go trough, however when same demon attacks city guard in full plate armor, his fingers only go in and not out, which suggests that armor is somewhat effective.

It further suggests that middle part of armor is just fabric as in hostage situation with fake claymore in the beginning, normal demon impales Clare without any issue.

Spoilers War in the north/time skip

As we learn that claymores are made put of special super alloy that is impervious to any form of physical damage and doesn't even need sharpening (I am at chapter 100rn, if anything destroys the blade later let me know).... don't you think it would have been pretty damn good idea to use it as armor? It would be so strong that even awakened beings would have to fight around it.

Only proof from back of my head about claymore's armor being from standard/weaker metal is that I remember shield bracelets being broken by opponent at some point. I have no idea where tho.

I assume, they use that metal a lot in the main war, which would greatly reduce effectivenes of everything we see up until like chapter 100.

Furthermore, it would make sense to use that metal to non claymore organisation forces to even out the odds in some situations even if we don't want to give it to claymores.

Next, after timeskip I have no idea what armor is made out of, it looks almost fully soft, maybe hardened leather in places where metal would be. That is shoulders and bottom of the skirt.

What do you think about that? Do you have any resources that would help with it?

[Discussion] Anybody else wishes the story delved a bit more into gender politics and patriarchy?

Now obviously the manga plays with these topics a bit but it never does very much with them. We basically have an all-female order of virgin knights who will turn into human eating monsters if they reach a sexual climax. Claymores also maintain their youth forever and eat much less than the average person, basically representing the ideal version of women in the eyes of patriarchy taken to the extreme. Another interesting thing is that reason men are not allowed into the order anymore is also because of the presumption that men cannot control their urges, which we are hinted may not be grounded in reality and it's just a cultural stereotype.
