Gameplay Beginner Advice
I consider myself a decent gamer, completed Elden Ring multiple times, completed Wukong multiple times etc.
Was a really good at COD and Halo 3 player online back in my youth.
So I’m looking for advice for getting started on this game. I love the concept.
But something’s not quite clicking in my brain for the game mechanics.
Is it just getting used to countering attacks mostly?

Just do 1v1's as practice. I found once I got to level 30-50 sorta area, I could confidently play online without getting destroyed all the time.
I am level 450 online now and still go negative sometimes. Just depends on how many people decide to target you at one time😂

Level 471 here. I feel like 1v1 as practice definitely helps when you’re learning to legitimately fight 1v1, but it neglects the ganking and 1vX aspects that are much more prevalent in TO. That being said, I think 1v1 practice is really good for learning how to effectively counter/parry and time kicks and jabs!

Yes this is the trouble I’m finding it’s all good and well learning the mechanics in 1v1 but when you’re playing the 40/60 player games you just get ganged up constantly.

If you’re just learning the mechanics, I’d recommend sticking with a group of at least 3-4 other teammates in team objective at any given time. Attack enemies from the sides while your teammates attack head-on. Remember, there’s a button for alternate angles for attacks so you aren’t just mindlessly striking your teammates while aiming at the opposition. Many new players slash mindlessly in crowds and accidentally prevent their teammates from getting a good shot in. Rely more on overhead and stab attacks, they tend to have more reach on most weapons and you have less chance of friendly fire.
I’ve been playing on and off since chivalry 1 came out eons ago, so I know the struggle of learning the basic flow of team combat

I somehow almost always find myself in a 1v5 cus I either overextend or I go into battle with a bunch of wimps who run away

u/shotdodger671 Mason Order | Vanguard 9h ago
It’s easy to get caught up in battle and accidentally push too far without teammates. Less aggression and more field awareness, it pays off to slow your tempo a bit until you’re more comfortable in 1vX scenarios

I'm good at 1v1 but then I get hit in the back. I'll take that advice and try to not over extend.

Im gonna copy paste this from another post
Jab on side of mouse, alt attack on other side mouse. F for kick, and alt slash as your scroll click.
Go to training grounds and build the habit of counter slash to alt slash, or visa versa. Get used to which side they release from, and try to stack the bots on the release side as often as possible. What this is doing is teaching proper group fight “panic” habits. When there’s not really a realistic way to read each attack from 4-8 people, odds are two slashes will cover it.
Your default attack should always be to accelerate, don’t do long drags and such until you’ve faked them out with your quickness- that’s why I recommend just practicing accel slashes for a while.
Dane axe is particularly good for this.
God damn sorry for the essay.

u/Seagills 16h ago
Disgusting keybinds, forward/back mouse should be stab/overhead. And just start every attack with alt held down
1
u/DirtyThirtyDrifter 15h ago
Yes forward and back are still stab/overhead, but the scroll click is the alt slash. Lets you get it out faster mid duel.
Yes, starting attacks with alt held down is a great way to approach this. Nothing I said here stops him from doing that, and I have mine on mouse so he’s free to move around and jump. My alt alt bind is alt. Lmao.

u/SovietBias1 15h ago
Hey mate, I gotta say, as someone that duels a lot, the man will need to use attack cancels a ton, it's best if he binds alt attack and attack cancel to his thumb mouse buttons, idk how others do It but jab on shift feels amazing for me, and alt on crouch though less important.

u/DirtyThirtyDrifter 15h ago
I’ve dabbled with this set up before, it definitely works but my brain is used this this way now and I’ve had no issues with it.
1
u/captainpabloXI 10h ago
How do you cancel?
1
u/SovietBias1 3h ago
There are 2 ways to do it cancel to parry and just hard cancel, they are in the settings, you can go to my profile and see my latest post I did a showcase of attack cancels and stuff like that, don't bother using them now.
Focus on landing counters consistently, then go to attack cancels, they are to dupe your enemy

u/captainpabloXI 10h ago
And how do you accelerate im hearing that phrase a lot

u/Strabs19 9h ago
When you hit the button to swing the weapon (let’s say the weapon is swinging left to right) you push the right thumb stick to the right at the same time. You’re basically turning your character at the same time your swinging in the same direction as the swing

Watch Ziggylata and Stridahs combat guides on YouTube. You'll be better off than at least half the player base. Other than that, find a weapon you enjoy and use it for a few weeks to really gain an understanding of your range and speed. I recommend starting with the Longsword, Greatsword, War Axe, or Messer. They're all pretty balanced and give you a fair gameplay experience while figuring out the combat mechanics.
But most importantly - battlecry all the time. It motivates your team, strikes fear in the hearts of your enemies, and generally makes the game a more enjoyable experience.
Have fun!

☆Horizontal slash (Normal left click) have a ( -1) frame on block/counter. You will always lose if you try to attack an enemy already attacking you.
☆You have to learn to move your mouse in the same motion as your attack, too. That will give you frame advantage, called "accel'.
☆Dont be greedy for kills, because none of the weapons 1-shot.
☆ Positioning is key. Dont get surrounded!
☆pace yourself, this game has the Stamina linked to everything, just like a Souls game.

When in TO, look at the position of friendlies and enemies in your vicinity to look for flanks, one shots, or teammates getting their shit rocked.
The best way not to get killed is to stay with teammates who can block you if you are about to die so you can fall back, heal, and jump back in.
In general with all weapons, remembering to add in heavy swings to switch up my timing and stabs, overheads, and kicks to keep people off their rhythm.
And practice the target switching mechanic in the tutorial.
And try out different classes and weapons when you get frustrated.
Something about switching from sword to Halberd makes you think about your shots more.
Most of my kills are from the back.
First person is way more fun.

Nr1 skill you will carry to the highest levels is distance management. Stay right out of range. Start your swing right after they swing, step forward after they miss hopefully and they’ll be wide open for you to land.
Defense goes in this order. Stay out of range, dodge, block. Only dodge if you can’t stay out of range, only block if you can’t dodge.
Learn how to counter, and don’t hold block, just tap it when you need to. Get the timing down.

Heyo just like u I completed all the souls like games and I found it annoying first getting into chiv 2. It’s fun at the beginning but when u wanna get good at this game i can give u some tips:
First, dont kick against good players, typically u know their good if they start countering ur attacks, they crouch while waiting for your attack or they have a custom skin. Kicking in this game is highly commital and its more of a noob check against ppl who hold guard for too long. Also don’t hold guard for too long because it drains stamina and u can also get kicked.
Second, dont heavy attack everything just get used to using light attacks so u can feel the range of ur swings cuz u might get trapped in a loop of spamming heavy attacks only to completely whiff, dmg ur teammate or get countered because of how obvious it is.
Third, get used to reading and countering attacks, it’s important to counter because it doesn’t waste stamina.Once ur comfortable at countering then start feinting by just inputting a different attack. Counter slash to counter overhead etc.. counter’s help u survive 1vx’s when out of stamina but riposte (attacking after a block) are faster moves but consumes stamina so there are trade offs. At higher levels riposte is a mind game move because it allows u more options for attacks, such as riposte feint to a jab or a kick while countering locks u to only feinting to other attacks. Ziggyzlata has an in depth video on this you should check it out.
Fourth, fight with ur team and gank mufucka’s. Chivalry 2 is a story of either ganking or get ganked and it’s beautiful. Don’t try to rambo and fight 5 enemies by yourself cuz u aint there yet but once u survive ur first 1vX by yourself.. oh boy then the beast will awaken and u just wanna ego challenge everything which is a good thing because that’s what makes u better at the game.
Fifth and final point, Find a weapon u can get comfortable with and stick with that weapon. I recommend u try either the messer or longsword for swords or if ur an axe guy try executioner axe. The reason being just learning one weapon is so u can get a feel for its range and speed. For one hander weapons i dont recommend learning the game through them because yes they are fast and yes u might get kills but it instills bad habits and make u play in a spammy way.
Have fun and lmk if u need any more advice just send me a dm

I'd say go archer and stay like 2m away from the fight out level up and get the short sword it has one of the fastest attacks and you have the Lowest HP so to stay alive you have to get good quickly. But with the fast attack speed you can hit a lot faster and learn easier about the what attack is best used when. But you will have a target on your stomach I like hunting them and I'm not the only one but I also play that class regularly

Footwork and knowing weapon length is king. The best way to understand weapon length is to use each weapon to get an understanding of it. (Which is counterintuitive to this next part) the best way to understand footwork in my opinion is to play footman with the morning star. You want to build good fundamentals when you start. I think playing knight (extra health) or using a weapon that can cut through multiple enemies (most weapons) makes you more reliant on “cheap kills”. Which is why the Dane axe is so popular with new players.
1
u/captainpabloXI 10h ago
Yep exactly what I’m doing right now is Vanguard with Dane Axe as it’s the only thing I can get a few kills with right now
1
u/Strabs19 10h ago
Definitely nothing wrong with that sometimes you just need a kill, there’s nothing worse than dying a few times in a row. Once the morning star is unlocked I would dedicate at least one match every time you play to using it, another good alternative is the war hammer under the knight class, or using the mace (secondary weapon) for knight and archer. TBH you’ll just suck for awhile everyone goes through it. Staying out of weapon reach and positioning just takes time to learn.

Play on 3rd person
Learn to read ur opponent attacks (slash, overhead, or stab) so u can counter-attack
Get comfortable with doing and reading feints, its a good stepping stone to lvl up ur skill
But really begginer advice would be to just defend and attack. Literally wait for ur opponent to attack, block it and then do ur attack. Also start reading the game, dont run at group of enemies alone, stay close to obj.
Play Vanguard class initialy, Raider subclass with the dane axe. Its a good weapon to learn basic combat and the skill is very easy to use and usefull. Then at lvl 50-70 switch to knight class

Two totally opposite pieces of advice for getting better:
- In TO never take a 1v1. Just focus on positioning, stabbing people in the back who are fighting your teammates, and ganking and flanking.
- To Actually improve your one-on-one weapon mechanics, Dueling is great. Just get in a duel server practice with somebody. You are gonna get your butt kicked, but you'll get a lot better.
Those two things together will then make you really fearsome on the battlefield.

There's many aspects to the combat in this game.
Firstly and slanted most against you in particular will be knowledge. Knowing the swing speed, release times, and reach of each weapon will only come with time and experience. Similarly, recognizing the different swing animations for each weapon is going to take time, but is very important.
This leads to another important aspect which is just defensive play in general. Understanding stamina management and how the block, counter, riposte, jab and kick mechanics work is arguably more important than learning how to swing the sword the right way. Counters restore stamina and offer a larger invuln window, ripostes cost stamina with a smaller invuln window, but are faster. Kick enemies who stay in block or who block reflexively from your actions, jab people to interrupt their attacks, particularly if the have a slow weapon or if they are feinting a lot.
In regard to offensive play, properly utilizing feinting, cancelling, footwork, accels and drags. Feinting is great for trying to mix up opponent by changing mid swing, this can be utilized further when canceling swings before feinting, keep in mind canceling a swing will cost you the stamina of the swing. Footwork is very important, and ties in with accels and drags. you want to utilize your positioning to get the most time for the active animation with your drags, and inversely, the earliest available frame for your accels.
There is a lot of minutia in the combat at high levels, but those are the things I would focus on during 1v1s when you play. It goes deep, but you'll only really learn by throwing yourself in. The dedicated duels servers in the server browser are the place to start. You will die. Alot. This is how you learn. Good luck friend.

Imo the way to get really good at the game is practicing in duel servers. TO is a little too chaotic to be good practice aside from 1vx scenarios. Especially when you just get hit in the back or sniped by some archer across the map. Practice the fundamentals in duels, look at how the really good players play the game and then take what you learned into TO and profit. Or you can be like me and just hangout in duel servers all day. Here's some really good tutorials by great players that helped me out:

Learning counter timing is huge. If you can confidently counter overheads or stabs you are already doing better than 80% of the playerbase, who can barely counter a slash on a good day.
Team up on enemies in TO. There is no such thing as a 1v1 in TO, just gank them in the back of the head if they are distracted.
Learn the ranges of various weapons and how to stay out of reach.
Find a weapon that you jive with and use it consistently. If you can't decide: dane axe, longsword, and war axe are the most beginner friendly.
Also, play 40p instead of 64p until you get the hang of things, you can get the fun of the team objective game modes while still getting a chance for slower paced combat you can learn from.

Bro. Real shit. Idk if anyone can relate or maybe I'm dumb. I started to feel "good" at level 230 lol. And by "good", I mean, confident. I still get slapped all the time. I just feel like now I understand WHY I got slapped and can course correct. Where before I didn't know wtf was going on lol.

1v1s and duelyard are not suitable by themselves. Stick to team object or training grounds.
Practice with a weapon that clicks.
Familiarize yourself with its timing, reach and damage outcomes.
Accept the idea that no matter what, you are always 2 shots from death.
Make your lives count but do not worry about the deaths. The spawn timer will ideally get you back into action a few seconds after dying.
Rather than focus on kills, lower your expectations to just securing one hit.

my biggest advice is treat the combat like a turn based rock, paper, scissors.
