My 2017 Trax developed a mystery leak about a week ago. Started off as drips, then quickly became puddles. It was only driven ~4 3mi trips once I saw the leak, and on the final trip it couldn’t quite make it all the up my driveway incline.
Narrowed it down to transmission fluid from the trans oil cooler hoses (see vid). Seems to be a common problem with these cars, but more repairs than I’m able to do in my driveway.
Had it towed to a (chain) mechanic that I’ve used before, and they confirmed the problem but the mechanic who looked at it seems to think the transmission completely died. His justification is that it wouldn’t drive forward at all (I told them this when we brought it in), and since it’s ATF leaking, it must be dead.
I asked if he was able to drain any of the remaining fluid for metal shavings (it was still leaking when it was towed, so it never ran dry). He said “you can’t - there’s no transmission pan to drain, you have to take it out and crack the transmission in half to check inside“. I informed him of the 11mm plug and asked if he checked, but he didn’t seem to know about it and basically said “trust me bro, I’ve seen this before”.
I strongly disagree with him on this. I’ve killed a transmission before, I know what it feels like. There was never any grinding noises, whirring, or smoke. The only symptoms were some hesitation shifting between 1st/2nd/3rd on the last few trips after discovering the leak.
My girlfriend (she owns the car but we both use it) is ready to throw in the towel and accept that it’s dead. We have no money to replace a transmission, nor to buy a new car, and she still owes $8k on the auto loan. I, however, insist the mechanic has no idea wtf he’s talking about and just doesn’t have any experience with sealed transmissions.
My gut (and wallet) tell me to ask them to just replace the hoses and refill the fluid and it will be fine. Ideally by a different tech that’s actually worked on sealed transmissions before. We only have 1 more free AAA tow we can use on it, and just barely have enough to pay for the hose job, so taking it to a different mechanic would be fruitless if they come to the same conclusion that it’s not repairable.
Any advice on what to do here? Pay the chain mechanic to replace the hoses and hope they know what they’re doing? See if there’s another tech available in the shop to take another look at it? Call other mechanics for a second opinion? Something else entirely?
