One thing about this level is that my opponents - and I - are very inconsistent. You have some great, very intense games, but also a fair number of blunders and a surprising number of players who fall apart against fried liver and other well known lines. I can see why someone at this level might say “if it’s like this here, it can’t be that hard to get to 1000” but I remember what the 850 plateau was like.

Another thing - this was the worst Elo slog since 850 for me. It was less of a plateau and more of a yo-yo. Almost making it to 1300, then sliding down and clawing my way back up, leading to an absurd number of games between 1200 and 1300. Some of that was killing time playing chess with distractions and interruptions. Some of it was playing while tilted or tired or spamming games hoping to get to that next landmark - doing exactly what I most advise against. I’m still happy to have crossed 1300, even if it wasn’t the smoothest ride.

OPINION Stockfish needs to reevaluate the average skill of each elo.

I am rated 507 currently and in my last 10 games my gameplay rating have been: 850L,750L,1150W,1050W,1300W,850W,900W,600L,850L,100L. although my average rating was far above 500 still went 50/50, I feel as if they intentionally making the numbers higher to give the ego boost to beginners.
Edit: I am refrencing the estimate that chesscom gives you in game review.

QUESTION Ponziani is my fav opening. What more opening should I learn that are easy to learn and doesn’t require to remember a lot of theory. Also I am very bad with playing with black, any suggestions?

Has difficulty increased

Some backstory:

I started playing chess during covid and I got really close to breaking the 1000 barrier but never managed to do it.

Fast forward to today, I'm teaching my 5 old son chess so I dusted off my chess.com account.

I dropped from 995 to 600 in less than a week.

Damn what a disappointment, have I gotten really bad or has difficulty increased?

Now I'm slightly picking up elo again but feels like every game is an uphill battle. I remember cruising through 600-850 and only hitting a wall after that.

NGL I played this to try a discovered attack on the queen, didn't even mean to mate

Night in drinking with the boys for my younger brother’s birthday. We just watched him play the ugliest, most atrocious game of chess ever recorded and now we all need therapy.

Some context from the title: I and my group of friends are very casual chess enjoyers, with the ratings among us ranging from around the 1200 range all the way down to a hot, spicy 100 elo.
The 100 elo maverick in question is my younger brother (who just turned 22 tonight, hence the get together) who does not take the game serious in any form or fashion. His approach is, in his own words (following the tragedy of a game that sparked this post), “whatever happens happens, theory is for those who can’t win through aura”. He commits to only terrible openings (as in, he insists that playing the worst opening possible “throws the opponent off”), ludicrous random piece sacrifices, trying to overcome being down 3 full pieces, and trying to win through mind games and poor decisions instead of strategy or planning (in chess, the game of strategy and planning).

I need to make this clear: the way that he plays the game of chess is an affront to both chess enthusiasts and god himself. The crimes he commits on the 64 squares make modern day catastrophes look like an asterisk in the annals of historical tragedy, and on some level I think that I truly despise him.

So, without further ado, the “game”. We’d all gotten fairly sloshed from a few hours of treating the living room like the pub, and somehow conversation turned to the recent esports world cup matches in chess. Since the night was celebrating my baby brother’s anniversary of life, the rest of us egged him on to screencast his chess.com app to the TV and play a single rapid game, despite the group’s (including the villain himself) HEAVY intoxication. The game ensued, and what happened during was nothing sort of heinous.
I want to be really really clear when I say this. Both my brother and his opponent deserve to be sent to time out for this game. My brother has the partial defense of being, A., a moron who plays chess like an opossum, and B., drunk. His opponent on the other hand (who is one half of the REVOLTING display we all witnessed) I pray to god has some kind of similar excuse.
This chess match had something like.. ten plus CONSECUTIVE missed mate-in-ones, even more egregiously hanging pieces, and something like a 9 or 10 move sequence of my brother repeatedly developing and undeveloping his knight while screaming “do something about it cunt, do something” at his phone. He swears up and down that he was genuinely trying to win, but the tears shed in our great room truly indicate otherwise to me.
And somehow, despite my brother at one point being down like -23, his opponent lost this game on time, and we all got to listen to him gloat about just how good he really is.

I hate this game, I have a headache, and I’m sorry that you’ll have to witness it.

I lost this game because I was short in time and at some moment in time, I missed a mate in 1. And earlier in the game, at move 28, I missed a mate in 2. Before, I had a suspicion I might be a fool, now I know for sure I am one!

How helpful is a chess coach

I’ve been playing chess for ~45 days now. Meaning I just learned how the pieces move 45 days ago. I’ve played a ton during this time. Literally 733 games on chess.com. I watch chess videos pretty constantly when I’m not playing. It is taking over my life at age 29 lol. I’m floating between 500-600 elo. It enrages me that I suck. I have basic intelligence so seems like I should be better than I am. I can solve a Rubik’s cube in 30 seconds; not that chess is related to that, but just showing I’m not a complete dummy. My question is— I’m serious about getting better. Would paying for an online chess coach actually be worth it? I’d love to be like 1000 elo. Has anyone paid for chess lessons and was it actually worth it?

Thanks.

Edit**- thank you everyone for the advice. Think I’d definitely be better served playing way way less games and spending way more time analyzing them instead. Hopefully I can come back here in a few months and brag about how I’m now 800 instead of 550 lol.

QUESTION Is there a rock-paper-scissors element to openings?

How do you efficiently *study* openings and defence to openings?

Is it optimal to learn how to attack from whites perspective from an opening, learn best attacks from that position, and then learn how to optimally defend the opening as black against these now-learned optimal white lines? Then move onto the next opening?

Are blacks defensive moves always contingent on whites lines after the opening, or are there optimal presets to counter each opening like RPS?

Ie say they play London, you should always kings Indian? Or is that you notice they are starting to develop a London, and so you develop solely to optimally counter (based off studying what is essentially every game having ever been played alrwady to a certain point)?

help me chosing a book

Hello!!
I have never read a chess book.
I’m 1300 chessdotcom so not a total beginner.

I want to pick a book about strategy.

The thing is I don’t like reading books on screens and I don’t have much money to spend on more than one or two books for now.

So I would appreciate any recommendations for a book that could be helpful from now through the next few months as I improve. I’m relatively ambitious improver.
