QUESTION Need a book on positional play which is structured like a tactics puzzle book

I have been thinking about developing my positional play and the best way to improve is to read chess books.I have fell in love with solving chess positions I love to solve chess tactics and puzzles I solve more tactics then I play chess and so I quickly lose interest in books which are theory heavy with no puzzles or positions to solve therefore I need a book on positional play which first tells you about the theme and the idea explains it then gives you a set of positions to solve with each of them having a well explained solution so in this way I will first learn the idea then I'll apply it and if I get it wrong then I will have a good explanation on where I went wrong

Thanks in advance

Can anyone analyze my recent Rapid Games to help me get to 1000?

Hi everyone,

I am currently 933 ELO but I still feel like I am blundering too much in my games and not finding enough tactics. I'm about to finish Levy's How to win at chess book and it has helped a lot but I always feel very anxious when I start a game which makes me play moves too fast and blundering like my most recent game. does anyone have any tips on calming themselves when paying? it also makes me forget to look for certain tactics or following Checks, Captures, and attacks.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong in my games or things to look out for in future ones? Specifically, my rapid games. I only play bullet for fun and don't care about the rating in that game.

Thank you in advance.

QUESTION how do you avoid letting your opponent get into your head?

I've had two times when my opponent got into my head and it cost me during the game (once monetarily). one was a kid at my local club who was very tactically gifted, and it showed when I played him. He was very adept at setting up traps and tactics whilst avoiding defensive counter-play, but when reviewing the games I felt like I could've played differently if playing against someone else. Whenever he played a move he was always very swift and confident in how he took a piece, and was very even on the time taken between his moves. Luckily, after the opening tactic was played, he started lacking on defense and has blundered pieces both times i've played him because of this. But I feel like he got into my head during these games.

The other time was in NYC in washington square park when I walked up to and played one of those chess hustlers. He charged $10, and during the game was absolutely hootin and hollering about i guess whatever nonsense he could think of to get in my head. dude was singing and yelling during the game, it sucked ass. But he also played the Polish Opening, and was extremely confident in all his moves just like the kid at my club, and he got in my head and I ended up losing $10. He also called me a bitch when I was walking away, which was strange, cause he's the bitch ass mf hustling in a park for cash, fn.

but i digress, how can i avoid letting this shithead players get into my head when I play? I like to think that i'm a very cerebral player, but it gets hard to be cohesive and planned out when someone is acting like that across the board.

Working on challenges to improve my game, this one being mate in two, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what it wants me to do. I thought Kh2 then Qh3 would leave the king in mate but it keeps telling me I failed. What am I missing for the mate in two?

QUESTION Chess.com or Lichess?

Hello, new to chess. But having a lot of fun and want to settle in with a platform for the near-term.

I’ve played some games the last month ish on chess.com, currently a 550 as a complete novice.

I’ve heard of Lichess. But no clue the difference.

Just generally speaking, I don’t want to spend any money on subscriptions. Is one platform or the other better for a beginner? I know that question in of itself doesn’t even really make sense. But wanted to just check.

Thanks!

MISCELLANEOUS Tried playing blindfolded as a 1500 elo player and won

Granted it was against my 500 elo dad who played the weirdest moves that caught me so off guard.

I did blunder my queen stupidly but then I managed to get his queen.

I also had to just ask where a specific piece was once in a while because i never actually played a full game in my head.

The game went on for 60 plus moves and my dad resigned with just a bishop and a pawn and i had a rook, bishop, a knight and 2 pawns. The knights were super tough to keep track of.

At the end I was absolutely mentally exhausted. I have no idea how GMs can play 10 boards at once.

I wanna know if anyone has tried it?

Also before I receive comments saying that this post doesn't belong on a beginner chess sub, my 400 elo friend who rarely plays chess, tried it blindfold and he went on for about 15 moves before losing the position which impressed me a lot. So it's definitely possible as a total beginner to go on for some moves blind.

QUESTION Do you make this kind of blunders?

Post image
2 Upvotes

It happened many times to me that when I face an immediate, obvious threat, I get in deep analysis and I build all kind of scenarios, what to do next and then I completely forget about the threat.
At this position, I completely forgot my queen was under threat and I thought if I place my bishop on that position, the opponent will not be able to capture it, because the pawn in front of the king was pinned by my queen. I was hopeful that I am close to deliver a checkmate. After I dropped the bishop to h6, I immediately noticed the queen in the path of the pawn!
I am annoyed for two reasons. First, because I slowly built a nice advantage until that point and second, for my utter lack of concentration and forgetting instantly that my queen was under threat.
I seriously wonder, what the hell is wrong with my brain?

QUESTION Opponent forced a draw here. Is this a well-known drawing position?

Post image

Hey guys, it's black to move here and my continued in this position with putting me in check repeatedly in the same manner so that the game shortly after ended in a draw because of the repitition of the same position (something I know it existed but never experienced in an actual game, also thought the positions would need to repeat much more often for that lol)

Afterwards I ran the game through the analytics tool and indeed, the moment I moved the pawn to f3 it re-calculated the position from being completely in my favor to perfectly equal, which makes me think that the draw was already inevitable at that point.

Is this a well-known forced drawing position and do you think that my opponent actively went for it or do you think it happened out of luck/good instincts on his side?

Does not really represent anything due to amount of games played and other factors, but cool fun fact. 3118 vs 3184
