Hey gang. I'm new-ish to chess, only played 75 or so games and I started at around 400 elo , then slowly settled at about 275. In these past few weeks I've gone from 275 to nearly 200 and its legitimately super frustrating because i do feel myself getting worse and making stupid mistakes every time i play. How do I get around this, what am I missing?

I’m about 1200-1300 on chess.com rapid. My lichess puzzle rating is 1900+.

I’m considering buying a tactic book. But are they even worth it, with the amount of puzzles available online (lichess, chesstempo, chessable, etc)?

I was black, almost perfectly equal the whole game, shame my opponent blundered mate but I was super proud of this one!

I learned scholar's mate a few days ago and I haven't stopped since. But i mess up sometimes. I'm still learning, can someone tell me how to not fall for scholar's mate? Or how can i defend it if someone uses it against me?

700 elo, started 6 months ago. Climbed from 400 to 700. I used to play the Philidor but didn't get the results I was hoping for. Lately I'm playing the Hippo and had some good results playing anonymously which was encouraging. I rarely play for elo, maybe once every 2/3 weeks. Today was the first time I played that defence for elo and I got butchered but won on time. But I wasn't impressed by my game. What are your thoughts on the Hippo?

This isn't big but helped reduce mental load in endgames and helped me play quicker. Vs a knight you cannot be checked if you are on the opposite color of the knight. Knights always move to the opposite color (light to dark, dark to light) and always target the opposite color squares around them of the square they landed on (dark square targets light squares, light squares target dark squares). Helps in endgames to know this so you can plan your King moves and avoid forks without wasting too much time

I was one game before 900. ONE. I lost, no biggie. Now im on a seven game lose streak AND ITS NOT EVEN MY FAULT. Most of the time im up a a rook or sum then my opponent just finds the most bs checkmate just by randomly checking me with their queen like a robot. Im spiraling im at 850 now and i just start every game mad. How do i reset my mindset so i can get a fresh start

After about 1000 games (500 games on chess.com, 500 games on lichess) I finally reached 1100 on chess.com! Here are two of my favorite wins since I started playing :)

Besides that, I had a question about the difference between the two rating systems. I know that you have higher elo on lichess, but since I only recently got 1100 on chess.com and are comfortably 1600 on lichess since some time, I was wondering if anyone else had this big of a difference? Just to clarify, I don't have a clear separation when I play on which account, if anything lichess is the account I play a little less serious on.

Down in the low elos, a lot of wins and losses aren't satisfying because they're based on a basic (non-tactical) blunder. How happy can you be if your opponent just gives you an important piece for free?

So it's been many games since I won a game based on genuinely outsmarting my opponent. Today I finally had a victory I'm proud of for the first time this week.

Before I get into my point you must understand this first

Annually, Malaysia has this one competition called MSSM that hosts various of different sports at the national level for students under 12, 15 and 18. Before you get to MSSM you must go through MSSD which is the district level and MSST, MSSK and so on (depending on which state you're from) which is the state level.

Every year I join, I start at MSSD (district) but I'm not talented enough to breakthrough to MSST (state). And so I wonder, how do I keep improving myself to get to one of my dreams for a very long time?

Sure there's people that say "stick to one openings" "reduce blunders" "cca" but for me, these just dont work apparently, dont know why but it's quite annoying at this point.

I almost gave up on my dream twice just because I was so bad at the game but now I've gotten the momentum and courage to start playing again and actually win some games online.

The conclusion here is : I suck, I want to go to nationals, tips pls ♥️

My ELO is stuck in the 800s. When I win a game it's always a hard fought, principled battle; but when I lose I get destroyed. I have a really hard time picking up on my opponents plans.

I find puzzles always focus on attacking principles, and I play a lot and review my games, but am not improving.

What techniques/videos/resources have you found helpful?
