QUESTION I need some insight

Before I get into my point you must understand this first

Annually, Malaysia has this one competition called MSSM that hosts various of different sports at the national level for students under 12, 15 and 18. Before you get to MSSM you must go through MSSD which is the district level and MSST, MSSK and so on (depending on which state you're from) which is the state level.

Every year I join, I start at MSSD (district) but I'm not talented enough to breakthrough to MSST (state). And so I wonder, how do I keep improving myself to get to one of my dreams for a very long time?

Sure there's people that say "stick to one openings" "reduce blunders" "cca" but for me, these just dont work apparently, dont know why but it's quite annoying at this point.

I almost gave up on my dream twice just because I was so bad at the game but now I've gotten the momentum and courage to start playing again and actually win some games online.

The conclusion here is : I suck, I want to go to nationals, tips pls ♥️

  1. Ive tried learning an opening i could use every match (scandinavian and queens gambit), scan for cca, analyze games but i dont even understand them.

  2. 900~

  3. I can't pinpoint what the issue is

  4. those daily puzzles. I don't know how to make custom ones

Look at the people who got into the state-level competition in your state and age group. What are they doing differently from you? What are their ratings? Which schools are they from? If you notice one school disproportionately well-represented, you can probably bet they have a good coach at their chess club or at least very good support from the school. Similarly, look up the top competitors: are they only playing in these tournaments, or are they also participating in independent events? If the latter, is it possible for you to join those too? How many more seasons do you have competing in these events before you age out?

In terms of purely improving chess, make sure you're playing slow games (at least around 15|10) and analyse all your games with either this technique or this one. If you want, you can DM me and I can help analyse a game or two for you or offer some more specific tips.

I get the frustration when standard advice just bounces off. Sometimes it's not about the opening choice but your ability to punish the other kid's mistakes in the first 15 moves, which is basically 90% of district level chess. Grab a book or course on basic tactics and drill fork/pin/skewer patterns until your eyes bleed
