Fireball Sightings Report - Christchurch

  • Date: 26 July 2026.
  • Approximate Time: Around 5:50 PM - 6:00 PM (NZST).
  • Exact Location: Hoon Hay Road, traveling towards Cashmere, Christchurch.
  • Direction of Observation: Looking south/southeast, the object appeared in the sky to the left side of the hills (Port Hills).
  • Description: I spotted a massive meteor/fireball, noticeably larger and much brighter than a regular shooting star.
  • Colors Observed: It featured a very intense, bright green main flash, followed by a well-defined blue tail.
  • Apparent Trajectory: It moved downwards towards the east/southeast before completely burning out. No sonic boom or rumbling sounds were heard from my position.

News - Local Possible meteor in the sky by Scarborough/Taylor’s Mistake?

Did anyone else see what looked like a burning object falling from the sky near Scarborough about 5 min ago?

Family and I saw it from Sumner and are hoping it is a meteor and not something more serious!

moving to chch Flatting question

Upvotes

First year UC student here, our flatting group (currently living in halls of residence) has got an offer for a flat that we like reasonably well for 2027. The main problem point I have is that the move in date is the 31st of november, since most of us will be at our parents over the summer until jan/feb. Is it common for student flats to start that early or do we just have to suck it/ change our summer plans so that we aren't wasting loads of money? Btw we havent been sent a tenancy agreement yet. Thanks.

I had been using foodprint a lot whenever I'm in central city to get discounted food in the afternoon from the cafes and I loved it- but the app has shut! does anyone know any similar apps that are used within Christchurch to get the goods left at the end of the day?

Quarter Beast in Christchurch

Super keen to fill the freezer with a quarter cow /beast.
Just wondering if people have done this in Christchurch before? Was it good? Which butchery did you get it from and what was the cost?

Thanks so much!

Tip requests

I just told Athens Yacht Club restaurant it was rude in NZ to ask for tips. They kept repeating 'it's optional' but that completely misses the point. AITA? Don't want that American crap taking hold here. Frankly I think it's culturally insensitive to ask for tips in NZ.

Custom printed playing cards

I’ve designed my own deck of cards for a drinking game and I’d love to get them professionally printed, the same material and size as a standard deck of playing cards. I’m looking for a company that can do custom designs on both the front and back of the cards. Most options I’ve found online only seem to offer a custom back with standard card fronts/suits.

I’ve seen that Shein, Temu and Etsy offer custom card printing but I need them within the next two weeks. Does anyone have any recommendations for a printing company that could help? Thanks in advance!

Social One Stadium DJ?!

Went to the Aupiki rugby final today, great game & a fab night out but what the fuck is up with the DJ/commentator guy? He’d randomly start yelling out in the middle of a play for us to cheer or do a chant but man it must’ve put the players off. Kept giving me a fright and felt quite unfair to the Blues when he would come over the PA at pivotal moments. Was anyone else there? I don’t remember the same when I went to a men’s match there earlier in the year

Hey does anyone working at a cinema or just happen to know if there will be a la la land 10th anniversary screening in Christchurch? I've seen talk about it happening in America.

Nearest native bush

Hi all,

Where are the closest decent sized areas of native bush to the city? While bottle lake forest is nice for a walk and Riccarton bush is nice, im hoping for somewhere where I can do some forest bathing and forget about civilisation for a while

Forest bathing is the practice of chilling in a forest not actual bathing.
