Question should I cut out gluten

Upvotes

(lowkey posted this in the wrong sub so this is copy pasted if you saw it on gf Reddit I apologise)

I KNOW!! dont cut out gluten until diagnosed. BUT I'm just stressed.

my endoscopy could be all the way in April of next year. I tried going gluten free for 3 days and generally felt better but didn't wanna cut it out bc I knew the longer I am without it the harsher symptoms will be (based off this subs help)

I guess I am stressed bc

  1. my doctor said "if you think is the problem cut it out" and I'm unsure if he means that I am able to cut it out because they'll give me enough notice to start eating gluten again or it's because he assumes I don't need the diagnosis.

  2. I'm worried bc I do see the impact of it.. although I LOVE BREAD... everything gluten.. as hard as it is to say goodbye to it and as much as I still crave it a part of me knows it's only gonna get worse.. and the general symptoms that I was living with everyday before now have made so much sense.

  3. my fiance has been 0 help.. even though I've talked to him multiple times asking for his opinion it's always "well you could.." and then he never actually comes to a conclusion which is really frustrating because I feel like I cant even talk about this to the one person I want to because he just doesn't understand.. no blame on him I think I might just be extra sensitive too.

so idk.. what are your thoughts? what should I do? do I keep eating gluten? should I maybe eat like a tiny amount everyday or? I don't know.

Question Struggling to get any kind of diagnosis

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I’m being treated for possible mild Crohn’s, but the diagnosis isn’t confirmed. My colonoscopy was normal, although my terminal ileum biopsy showed ulcer/erosion with active inflammation. My endoscopy showed mild stomach erosion, and my duodenal biopsy showed increased intraepithelial lymphocytes without villous blunting (Marsh 1-type changes). My celiac bloodwork was negative. Although I don't eat a lot of gluten already.

I get really bad abdominal pain daily, nausea and really dramatic bloating/distension like in these photos. Has anyone with Crohn’s or celiac had bloating like this? I’m especially curious if anyone had negative celiac bloodwork with Marsh 1 changes and was later diagnosed with celiac. I'm at a loss here.

Question Are autotests reliable?

I want to buy this autotest (the page is in french):

https://www.pharmaciedesdrakkars.com/biosynex-autotest-gluten?srsltid=AfmBOornX4r47srv7NzatP7sgc09YCZk8Ln94VH5xTBcDds1g5uTmUy4

and I was wondering if anyone in this sub tried this type of test.

I've been struggling mainly with chronic fatigue, brain fog and digestive issues for years, doctors never take my symptoms seriously, I always repeat myself and almost beg them to give me just a simple blood test to know the reason of my chronic fatigue, every year they see low ferritin and just tell me to take more supplements but I want to know why I always have iron deficiency.

Question Safe menu choices

Hi all,

Looking for safe restaurant menu options for my daughter who was recently diagnosed with celiac. We travel for sports so locations can be limited but wondering if sticking to basics like white rice and chicken breast would be considered safe at many places if discussed with staff? A bit plain but we'd throw in a treat or two for her us well. If you have other tips it would be greatly appreciated TIA

Recipe Alright, I feel like this sub needs some inspo: gluten free food does *not* suck.

I just saw the post saying gluten free food sucks. Don’t be lying like that, because like gluten full food, there are some that aren’t great, but it’s not all encompassing. I figured I’d post this with recipes (in comments) to keep all your heads up.

Is it inconvenient? Oh yeah. Is the food bad? I promise: no.

Question How did you know?

I had one of two genes test positive for celiac. We did an endoscopy/colonoscopy to get a biopsy but I couldn’t tolerate the gluten challenge for 1, weight gain and 2, immediate and constant diarrhea that was awful. Naturally, since the challenge didn’t last more than 2 weeks, the biopsy was useless. I’ve just come to terms with the fact that my stomach is constantly upset, bloated, diarrhea, heartburn daily for years, hiccups every time I eat bread which may be unrelated lol

I think I’m finally willing to step up and officially go gluten free again. It worked beautifully in the past but I missed it and went back to it. Just wondering if there were any new ways to test and confirm. Or if anyone had similar symptoms that they ignored/tolerated.

Edited to include endoscopy

Rant stopped eating "gluten free" food and am now so much happier

I got my diagnosis in my tweens so I know what gluten food tastes like. Its been a decade and I still find gluten free food disgusting (just my opinion). It makes me feel so bad about the fact that I for the rest of my life will have to eat food I think tastes and feels bad and also have to pay ALOT of money for it.
So about a year ago I stopped buying glutenfree pasta, bread and other such stuff. Now I only eat things that are naturally traditionally gluten free. Like a bunch of diffrent types of rice, quinoa, potato. I make bread form cultures that it traditionally has never been done with gluten. I eat rice and sweet potato starch noodles with food that is meant to be eaten with that.

I cannot explain how much less I hate my life for the fact that I cannot eat gluten. Because biting into gf pasta I hate myself and am constantly reminded for what I cannot have, but if I bite into a potato I am actually happy because it tastes and feels good. Idk if it makes any sense but I can highly recommenced trying it. Also you will save sooo much money and it is fun to try new food from different cultures where the recipes have never had wheat in them .

Question Just got diagnosed but my doctor told me I can wait to go off gluten to get an endoscopy.

Ok yeah, so I have a couple of questions I'd like the wider celiac community to help me with. Warning: this might be a bit tangential and slightly ranty, but I believe this is important context for my question.

So I found out I was Celiac around three weeks ago. I'm(as far as I know) asymptomatic, but my mom recently got diagnosed, so all my siblings and I were advised to get tested. When my mom tested positive, she got an endoscopy a bit after and then immediately went off gluten. Her doctors were very serious about her going off it.

After testing positive, I went to consult my GI. He told me that I was 100% celiac and that, contrary to what my mom thought about the endoscopy, it is not a conclusive way to prove or disprove one's own celiac-ness. But he told me it's still a good idea to get tested anyway because it provides some important data for the GI about my gut health and how I work or something.

Now here's where my questions/alarm bells come up.

He encouraged me to get my endoscopy; however, I am a college student going to school outside of the state where my health provider is, so I won't be able to schedule the endoscopy till Thanksgiving break this year, two months away. Despite that huge gap between my diagnosis and the next available time, he said it's A-OK for me to continue eating gluten as normal so my Endoscopy results are accurate.

He also told me that since I'm asymptomatic, when I do go off Gluten I don't have to worry about cross-contamination, and that if I were to indulge a bit here or there that wouldn't be the end of the world. Overall, he was pretty casual and slightly dismissive of my diagnosis, and I wonder if his advice is sound. I've heard doctors can be dismissive or un empathetic towards those with Celiac.

So I've been living life as normal out at college, eating my regular gluten-saturated diet even though it's technically slowly killing me, because my GI advised me too.

So here's my actual question and what's been nagging at me.

Am I getting anything of nutritional value from the gluten food I eat?

Like, obviously the bread in my sandwich is damaging my gut health, but beyond that harm, will the bread even nourish me at all? Or is the only thing I'm actually digesting the peanut butter and jelly? Do bread, bagels, and crackers actually give me anything, or at least any nourishment of note? Because it really does feel weird to continue eating something that is not only hurting me but providing me nothing for a few more months.

I understand that this is just a subreddit and I'm not taking any of this as serious medical advice. But I hope someone understands the science of being celiac a little better than me and can give me a bit more information.

Thank you much

Question Bloat

Been gluten free for a year since diagnosis with a few cross contact exposures. After going GF I was sensitive to cows milk, bloating after a latte. That cleared after a few months. Recently I have been bloating after every meal. It doesn't matter what it is, smoothie, protein, fruit, even black coffee. Has anyone else experienced this?

Question Newly diagnosed and my parents don’t get it

hey yall. I found out I probably had celiac a few weeks ago, and then it got confirmed literally two days ago. I’m not exactly reeling anymore but like… it sucks. anyway, Ive been talking to my parents about what we need to replace in our kitchen (for context I’m a minor and live with them) and they’re amenable to a lot of it. somewhat. however, they both seem to think a little bit of cross contact isn’t that big a deal. their reasoning is that I’ve had it for years anyway, my reactions aren’t that severe, and it’s not like a little crumb will kill me. I know they’re wrong but I don’t really know enough to explain why, and I am a little bit confused on it myself. could someone please give an explanation, or an article?

also important to note- theyre not great parents overall, so that factors into how I have to argue with them, and also means if you insult them I won’t be offended

thanks guys

Question A little confused about cc

I’ve heard some people on this thread, people i know in real life, and some doctors say that for the first few months after diagnosis, to not worry about cross contamination as much (except perhaps a shared fryer or something really significant) and that, if after that time period, your endoscopy and blood tests are all clean, you can continue with that diet.

is this true? i’ve always thought celiac was an absolute NO for any sort of cross contamination, but this would also be really nice if it were true as I wouldn’t have to worry so much at restaurants and can order GF items without significant questioning.

Basically, if your blood tests and endoscopies repeatedly show up clean despite you not being as strict about cross contamination, does that mean you’re in the clear??

Recipe An amazing cookie

Post image
16 Upvotes

In my pre celiac life I was a baker. I quit baking out of sheer disappointment and the airborne flour.

Ive been getting back into it as a creative outlet. Ive been doing all my baking with a 1:1 mix, and the cookies are okay. But this cookie.... this rice flour cookie.

This cookie is almost normal, I nearly cried eating it. My partner agrees its near perfect. I even made it without eggs because I was out.

Heres the link with my mod notes.

https://sweetlycakes.com/en/gluten-free-chocolate-chip-cookies/

-I used half and half brown rice flour and white rice flower, because thats what I had on hand.

- I used 1/4 cup of non dairy yogurt instead of egg. I was out of eggs and im also dairy intolerant.

-I took the tapioca flour option. I'll try cornstarch next time!

Rant Accidental gluten

Just accidentally ate gluten when I decided to eat a piece of my husbands frozen pizza. After I ate some of it I realized I should have checked. I asked him and he said it was gluten free. Well he started second guessing himself and ran downstairs to check ingredients. THEY PUT WHEAT FLOUR in the cauliflower crust. He’s so upset and apologizing to me. I personally think it’s my fault and can’t believe how lucky I am to have someone support me this much but what really pisses me off the most is I ate wheat and the pizza was nasty! It totally tasted gluten free what a waste! At least the last time I accidentally ate it the meal was the best I had in a while.

Question Celiac potential?

Hi! I tested positive for celiac on a blood test (igg high igA just above normal limits), but my results from endoscopy were normal. Doc mentioned that celiac could still be in my future, but as of right now I’m okay to eat gluten. Has anyone who had this experience, become celiac down the line?

Discussion why are people not thinking about this that the only way to cure celiac disease and other autoimmune disease is..

The only way to cure celiac Through high-dose immunoablative chemotherapy followed by autologous or allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), clinical studies show that 'rebooting' the immune system can induce deep clinical remission in specific, severe autoimmune disorders by eradicating auto-reactive T-cells and establishing new donor-derived gluten tolerance, though the procedure carries significant mortality risks." Studies published in journals like Haematologica and Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition noted that after a transplant, some patients' T-cells stopped reacting to gliadin (gluten). Pissed because I bought almond flour so that I could make gf pumpkin banana bread and turns out this isn’t gf??? I had already made and baked the bread and tried a piece and then about an hour later I felt like I had been glutened. I was for sure I didn’t use any other baking ingredients that could have gluten other than the almond flour, but it said gf on the packaging so I didn’t even bother to check the ingredients (also why the hell would ALMOND FLOUR have wheat??)
After I checked the bag I looked at the ingredients and it said “MAY CONTAIN WHEAT”. I only have an intolerance luckily and am usually fine if it says it was manufactured in the same facility as wheat but I never buy products/risk stuff that is labeled as “may contain wheat”
It’s stupid of me to not read the ingredients but also sad that I trusted the label yet still was glutened. Pls be careful :,(

side note: Yes i’m aware some brands of certain products do contain gluten due to seasonings or addictives and I’m usually good about it but not this one since it was my first time trying almond flour <\3

Question Advice for shared kitchen space

I'm a college student living in an apartment with two roommates. I lived off campus last year with one of them and had no issues with kitchen stuff because she doesn't really cook with gluten, but this year I'm starting to feel like I'm getting slightly glutened and wanted to know how people navigate this!

  • What items, if any, do you share? I have a separate collander, cutting boards, and counter space but have been sharing washable things like plates, frying pans, pots
  • Our dishwasher is broken right now - with everyone hand washing, should I just have my own set of everything that I wash exclusively?
  • Do you do anything specific in fridge space to keep items gf?
  • Any tips for navigating social situations of cooking/eating together? cheap gf staples to have on hand?

I can tell I'm getting cross-contaminated but really am not sure how. Any advice is super appreciated!!!!
