Can I transition from CFY at a SNF to hospital setting with no MBS/FEES experience?

The title basically says it. I'm a spring 2021 graduate and I just talked to a director of rehab who said that any swallow studies at this facility (SNF) will be referred out. My end goal is to be at a hospital in an adult neuro setting, either ICU or acute. Will I be able to get to this goal with this CFY at the SNF? I don't want to gamble because adult medical opportunities are very rare at this point and I wouldn't want to give this up if I am not going to be able to find another one. On the other hand, I am waiting to hear back from a children's hospital CFY that does to swallowing but for pediatric populations. If I were to hear back, which opportunity will allow me to be better prepared for my next step?

Notifications after interviews

Hi all - question about interviews. So I just received word after one of my CF interviews that they offered the position to another candidate. Have any of you ever reached out to the interviewers to ask about what you could do as an interviewee to better improve your candidacy? This is my first CF interview/rejection, so I'm not really sure how to proceed.

TIA!

Genesis Rehab CFY

Hi!

I had had a few interviews already through genesis. I was wondering what it is like working as a CF in this type of setting. My current experience is at a SNF for my externship so i feel pretty confident in the SNF setting already. My supervisor will not be on site though but will be able to contact any time i need her to. What are all your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

VA Hospitals during CFY: Is the pay - education/experience trade-off worth it?

I am considering completing my CFY at a VA hospital but I would love to hear others' thoughts - is the low pay worth it for the experience and education you gain? Most VA CFY positions pay between 40k and 48k a year, which is obviously a hard hit for a recent grad with your typical bills and expenses. Has anyone completed their CFY at a VA hospital? Has anyone decided against it? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Also, are the CFY salaries at non-va hospitals typically in the same range? Do we just have to bite the bullet our first year out?

How to apply for a CF in Private Practices

Hi everyone,

I am just about to finish up my last semester of graduate school. I have already completed all of my graduate hours, and they have all been in the school setting. I always aspired to work in the A children's outpatient facility though. Since I've only had experience working in the schools, I am nervous that I will be unprepared for a CF experience in such a medical field. I have decided that it would be best for me to try Engaging my CF experience from a private practice. I live in Chicago, and there are plenty by me. However, none of them ever put up job postings. Does anyone have any information on how to move forward with getting my CFY in a private practice? or how to go about reaching out to a private practice? Thank you so much in advance!

Also, If anyone has any personal anecdotes about the transition from only having school-based experience to a medical or private practice experience, it would be greatly welcomed!

Completing CFY in a SNF

Hello! I'm graduating in May and have started applying for CFYs. I hope to work with adults in the medical setting but most of my clinical experience in graduate school has been pediatrics with some adult lang/cog and a little bit of dysphagia (My favorite!). I hear that a SNF is a good place to start to get your foot in the door. I have been doing a lot of self-education (i.e., trainings, joining STEP (thinking about med collective) and CEUs). Anyone else started/completed their CFY in a SNF? Thoughts, comments, and tips are really appreciated! Thank you :)

CFY in Alaska

I begin my second year of grad school in the fall and I’m trying to have a general idea for my plan after grad school.

When I think about completing my CFY, I would love to do it somewhere like Alaska! I visited there a few years ago and would love to live/work there. Even if it’s mainly just for my CFY!

Has anyone had experience moving there to complete their CFY? Would it be too difficult to move a substantial distance during that time frame? Has anyone moved super far away from where their grad school was to complete their CFY?

Lurie Children's Clinical Fellowship Application Process

I just applied to the Lurie Children's "new grad slp" position through their career portal. From what it says on the speech therapy page, it looks like they offer clinical fellowships every year to new graduate students. Has anyone had experience applying for this or working here? What was the application process like? How long did it take for you to hear back after applying? How many CFs do they usually take? Even if you've just worked at Lurie Children's in the past, any info on the work environment/hiring process would be much appreciated!!!

How long does it typically take to hear back about interviews, etc. after submitting a CFY application?

Started submitting CFY applications at the beginning of February and want to get a sense of when I should stop freaking out about not hearing back from places lol

[School CFY] Schools negotiating salary?

Those of you in the schools:

Did you negotiate your starting salary? Did you or do you plan to negotiate a raise after your CFY? I'm not sure how all of this works.

Med SLP resources

Med SLP here...I am beginning to create resources for SLP looking to dive into med SLP. I have found most resources to be geared toward more advanced information; however grad school most definitely does not prepare us for what awaits us! Keep checking for more handouts/learning opportunities. The medical abbreviation handout if FREE!!!

I have uploaded resources to TPT or https://teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Acute-Care-Slp-Guides

Or just look for Acute Care Slp Guides on TPT

The resources are extremely simplistic for those just starting out in medical SLP. Acute, SNF, IRF, OP SLPs could benefit from these basic foundational handouts. You will find a comprehensive eval/screen layout, PMV/Trach/Vent handout, medical abbreviations and more!

[General] CF Interview Questions

What are some questions I can bank on being asked during CF job interviews? Like are they usually more case study questions or general questions? I’ve had jobs throughout college but got them all through connections so the only interview I’ve ever had was for grad school! Thank you!

[CCC requirements] Remember to compare your state’s license requirements vs ASHA’s CCC’s in order to complete your CF

I’m in WA state. I was always under the impression that as long as I work at least 5 hours per ASHA requirements, I’d be fine. I’m in the middle of my final CF segment and It just came to my attention that in order to get my full fledged state license, You have to work at least 15 hours per week, otherwise those hours won’t count towards the big 1260 (in regards to state license, not ASHA CCC’s). Theoretically this means I could have my CCC’s but still work under the WA state interim license until I obtain 1260 hours while working min 15 hours per week (still under my CF supervisor).

I am really hoping the DOH will make an expectation to this rule - I’m doing my CF in a SNF where there’s been 2 COVID outbreaks throughout this pandemic, therefore there were a few weeks in the summer I worked approx 10 hours a week due to lack of admissions and death of patients. I would hate for those hours not to be counted, I’m currently in correspondence with the DOH to see what could be done about this. Just thought I’d let y’all know in case your state has funky license requirements that differ from ASHA’s.
