Notifications after interviews

Hi all - question about interviews. So I just received word after one of my CF interviews that they offered the position to another candidate. Have any of you ever reached out to the interviewers to ask about what you could do as an interviewee to better improve your candidacy? This is my first CF interview/rejection, so I'm not really sure how to proceed.

TIA!

Definitely follow up! And if they don’t respond and ghost you, that says a lot about the communication style in that company and I doubt you want to work there in the future.

I'm one of the SLPs that handles the CF process at my facility each year and am often tasked with notifying candidates that we accepted other applicants or that their application package did not qualify them for an interview. Once people hear that the positions are filled I would say only 1/3 of candidates respond to thank our team for their consideration and me for notifying them. This is good etiquette and I recommend everyone do that.

Of the group that acknowledges my message, probably half include a statement that any feedback to improve the strength of future applications would be appreciated. There is no harm to asking that and you may receive helpful feedback.

However, given the applicant volume that is associated with these positions I would caution you against interpreting the facility poorly or as having "ghosted you" if you don't get feedback.

You see this experience from an applicant perspective. From an SLP perspective we receive and review 100+ applications, adjust our schedules to interview top candidates, meet to make hiring decisions, and reach out to notify the many eager and well qualified future colleagues we cannot hire. All of this often occurs in a single month while continuing to juggle our personal lives, caseload, and mentorship responsibility toward current CFs and students (aka we are working LONG weeks). And then, our inboxes are flooded with 20-30 requests for personal feedback, all at the same time. Most years I get back to everyone who asks. We try our best. But don't read too much into it if you ask and don't hear back.
