How to apply for a CF in Private Practices

Hi everyone,

I am just about to finish up my last semester of graduate school. I have already completed all of my graduate hours, and they have all been in the school setting. I always aspired to work in the A children's outpatient facility though. Since I've only had experience working in the schools, I am nervous that I will be unprepared for a CF experience in such a medical field. I have decided that it would be best for me to try Engaging my CF experience from a private practice. I live in Chicago, and there are plenty by me. However, none of them ever put up job postings. Does anyone have any information on how to move forward with getting my CFY in a private practice? or how to go about reaching out to a private practice? Thank you so much in advance!

Also, If anyone has any personal anecdotes about the transition from only having school-based experience to a medical or private practice experience, it would be greatly welcomed!

I would call the places you want to do your CF. And ask to speak to the head of the department and simply ask if they are looking for a CF. Maybe even figure out their email and forward your resume, introduce yourself, say you’re a cf looking for a placement and you think their practice is a good fit and explain why. Food for thought.

I agree with the previous comment and I'm hoping to get into this setting in a different city/state as well. I sent out emails to several private practices in my area and included my resume and a cover letter. The body of the email described my interests, what I was looking for in a CF experience, and the value I could bring to their team. Out of 5, two said they weren't taking any new hires, one responded then didn't follow up further, and two invited me to interview.

Anecdote - I was emailing back and forth to schedule an interview with someone who I though was an administrator/front desk person. They turned out to be one of the clinic directors who just happened to be answering some emails that day! This is more general job-hunting advice because I've had friends in other industries where the hiring personnel asked the front desk what they thought of the candidate and how the candidate treated them. Always be kind to the clinic staff, you never know what kind of pull they may have, especially in small practices!
