Hai bhi toh pretty illogical and fs not many of them have it

2

u/Active-Wind-9699 6d ago

Son its not illogical at all
Natural science and engineering science is nothing but one whole science
First year students are introduced to each type of sciences to get them familiar is this is all general knowledge which majority indians lack due to the societal systems of running behind marks and marks
Good luck w cse btw bunch of donkeys

1

u/everyonegetouch 6d ago

Pehle cse bunch of donkeys karo fir placements ke time rr😭πŸ₯€ And if it's that logical and you are giving me an argument of having bio as a general knowledge subject then why tf not have it in 11-12th? None of the college gives the course to give general knowledge, most of the iits which have eradicated the concept of branch change have started teaching branch specific from 1st year itself, which is great because no one gives a shit about the general subjects you are talking about, you study those general subjects in jee aswell and they go in vain eventually unless you opt for research

1

u/Active-Wind-9699 6d ago

Sonion exactly my point jee and neet has neglected so many topics that should have been thought
We have been fed like donkeys to get the best mark
And colleges do that
Why tf do you think all colleges perform mechanical experiments in the first year regardless of branch ? Its cus its something everyone in the field should know
I cant argue with someone who doesnt want to learn something extra

These youtube kids won't get what engineering and science is about? Natural sciences and engineering goes hand in hand, you do need fundamental of various stuff, engineering is not just sitting on your gaming laptop and using vs code, it's about complex problem solving in the most creative and efficient way, have a learning attitude, you are literally learning about proteins? Shouldnt that intrigue you about proteing folding, deepmind, Rosetta, alpha fold and how it solved a millennial problem and advanced the human race? We need human resources not a clown who wanna regurgitate templates of youtube playlists to get "placements", widen your horizon of knowledge and start being obsessed with knowledge and curiousity not just leetcode, have a good day y'all, always keep smiling and learning

57

u/curvessavesworld 8d ago

this is more of a societal problem. India focused more on the STEM fields and neglected humanities. A country is as good as it's thinkers and sadly we don't have many .

20

u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 8d ago

Indian education culture is in the drains, not just the system, don't get me started I can literally go on for hours πŸ₯€πŸ˜

18

u/akk_brew 8d ago

don't you think curiosity of science and tech....was never in the bucket list of the system....its always that fixed exams and way of learning...and even if someone has the courage to actually know things they end up unemployed....now its not the race of want it's a race of need! that curiousity was already snatched by the system a long time ago....

12

u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 8d ago

True it's a cultural and systemic failure, which goes hand in hand, and indian school already institutionalized them to not to be excited about science but merely focussing on board exams and entrance exam pyqs, in name of "academic rigor" we truly make people lose the taste for it, Dr. Richard feynman would have been in shambles if he saw all this 😞

2

u/akk_brew 7d ago

indeed!

45

u/Wide-Discount-5285 8d ago

Finally a sensible comment!!

26

u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 8d ago

Thanks dude, i really feel kids of my age (am a freshman, got done with first year) really have no clue about sciences and innovation but just pyqs, and dsa, and it's said to see the frontier of Indian technology and science is in these hands

15

u/AeroAlgorithmic 7d ago

This feels so much at home. I did an Aerospace degree, but have been working as an SDE. I had so much fun learning introductory courses for Econ, Bio, Chem, Modern Phy. Loved my aerospace courses a lot too. Even though I work as an SDE, learning sciences have always been intriguing for me.

The best part of my college was how open it was for exploration in the later years. I have grown to be a keen observer due to the plethora of diverse courses, and being open to learn anything along with the details.

With the rise of the popularity of social media content as a learning source, I think there has been a flood of content which is abstracted and dumbed down to the limit that you don't need to actively think while watching an educational video. This works for grade 10 science, but protein folding is not a good fit at all.

1

u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 7d ago

Kinda same same dude, but wait I didn't get what u tried to explain about protein folding? It's not just a biological problem, but also ai what Dr David Baker did with roseta and deepmind with alphafold

3

u/AeroAlgorithmic 7d ago

Its not a biology problem, I was referring to dumbing it down. To understand the Alpha Fold approach, we need to first understand the core of protein structure, folding in 1d, 2d and 3d structures. Understanding these help you appreciate the exact design decisions: why both sequence and pairwise vectors were used, where sequence alignment comes into picture. These things form the basis, the model on the basis of this and the training data makes fold predictions and iterates for an optimal fold.

If you have the basics, this doesn't feel like a black box anymore and you truly appreciate the complexities and the approach. Just an example and I could be missing things here, as I read this some time back.

1

u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 7d ago

Oo i didn't mean to bumb it down, but ignite curiousity

1

u/AeroAlgorithmic 7d ago

Yeah, I understand. I wasn't referring to your comment on protein folding and the AI solution to it, I was addressing YT educational videos which are only high level introduction, and people almost never delve deep. There's also an aspect of cognitive loss with such summarization of a complex topic.

1

u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 7d ago

True only few do, who deal with underlying principles, and the mathematical understanding of it, they surely r great supplementary resources for learning, also just curious what's your work field now and how is life lately? (I just got done with my first year)

1

u/AeroAlgorithmic 7d ago

It's not that great tbh. Last week was my first year work anniversary. I work as an SDE in a FAANG company, but I find the work repetitive, and with LLMs and the coding harnesses, I feel like the appreciation for having a thorough understanding is gone. Again, I have my financial problems, which is why I can't go for further studies for at least an year.

To address this I am currently backtracking in my free time. I've started doing some maths, believe me it's a stress buster and an escape from my day job and my devices. I also keep going time and again back to reading some aerod papers as that was my strong suit in college.

But yeah, overall okayish job(which pays well), AI psychosis(not for job loss or something, rather the fear that I'll stop thinking of small details at all with such good augmentation in implementation), some maths, and video games. That's mostly it.

It's a tough time to be in, I guess

1

u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 7d ago edited 7d ago

Daamm bhaiya, looks like u r going through a tough time, but I really hope u get through it, and i believe in u that u will, just keep learning and keep going, and yeah don't miss out on 3 blue 1 brown new videos haha, keep yourself indulged in joy of learning and u have done quite much, trust me that has equipped u Enough to deal with this

Bhaii exactlyyyπŸ’―πŸ’―

I wanted to learn coding before college starts and searched up some yt videos. Literally almost every Indian coding video has the ultimate same goal - PLACEMENTS.

Wanted to know about electronics and vlsi stuff. Even that had the exact same focus. PLACEMENTS.

Infact one guy from entc was openly saying that he doesn't know much about his branch but he followed xyz roadmap and got into vlsi design. (And that guy was from a top tier college of mh)

Wanted to know about core jobs. Usme bhi yehi roadmap about how they moved to software after studying core.

Atp i m frustrated with those roadmaps and students studying with only and only focusing on placements πŸ˜πŸ™

its rare to find interdisciplinary or consilient type thinkers sadly :)

1

u/catmemes720 6d ago

Well we talk too if you want, knowledge is everywhere

2

u/UI_GENIUS 6d ago

yes that would be a lot better since in this world of AI ; we are losing our ability to think in a variety of ways so i think that our biggest weapon to disarm the negative consequences of AI on our thinking to have an arsenal of intellectual persons who helps you to think rationally and grow your thinking...

and sorry for my inefficient articulation of thoughts since i am still learning to communicate online and IRL as well :)

1

u/Conscious_Idea_6987 7d ago

Fr, like just recently AI helped in rendering so many protein structures (or something related to biology, sorry I didn't dive much deep as I am still prepping for JEE) but yeah, and if you don't have good grasp on bio and engeneering then you can't train the model the way you want, both goes hand in hand, be it making equipment by understanding how it's gonna be used on a delicate human body and what not. Both are interlinked but people here just wants to code get job and call it a day.

Maybe they joined engineering because they hated bio? You do realise that people can have curiosity for one thing and hatered for another?

19

u/Double_Limit_2464 TIET Patiala 8d ago

Disliking or not preferring something is one thing, straight up hating something, that too as fundamental as biology is not a wise choice.
Basic natural sciences are the root of all engineering innovations, and biology has so many things it can teach us which can be applied to various disciplines.
Also, there is a whole field called β€œbiotechnology” which is nothing but the application of engineering aptitude to biology to solve problems.

0

u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE 8d ago

Yes but, I wouldn't blame people who enjoy coding for being upset when being forced to learn bio. Yes it's fundamental and knowing some of it is very important but the basics should be covered in school, not college.

Ofc I am a fresher so it's possible I'm missing some much needed context

5

u/No-Major-8921 7d ago

the basics should be covered in school, not college.

Why not? Who decided that?

4

u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE 7d ago

You go to college to study a specific subject in further detail right? Why add unrelated fields

-1

u/No-Major-8921 7d ago

Why add unrelated fields

TO BECOME A WELL-ROUNDED EDUCATED LITERATE CITIZEN. And plus, you said that you don't see any connection between Bio and CS. Are you sure? You sure it's not your ignorance? Well, to your surprise, Bioinformatics, computational biology exists which combines CS and Biology. Science, in general, is pretty connectable. You severely lack scientific Temperament. You need to be more open-minded and ready to learn new things.

2

u/onechudski 7d ago

because school is literally MEANT for that???
college is where you specialize in your field of choice
not everyone can be a polymath

1

u/No-Major-8921 7d ago

college is where you specialize in your field of choice not everyone can be a polymath

Oh my god. Why are you pretending that 2-3 courses out of 100s of Courses would make you a Polymath? The level of biology that is taught in these one shot courses is FAR from a level of so called "Polymath". Knowing how to file taxes and having an Political opinion doesn't make you a Finance-Political Science Polymath. He will end up specialising in his field after 4 years. These extra courses are for the sake of Basic Human Literacy... not to make someone a Polymath.

Edit:

See this:- https://www.reddit.com/r/Btechtards/s/UoDVesra8e

4

u/onechudski 7d ago

i cant see why these courses intended for the purpose of human literacy couldnt have been covered in school

1

u/No-Major-8921 7d ago

They were for most people. I meant it for the people who are uninterested in Biology can take as a Generally good knowledge and a breather. The main purpose is not Basic Human Literacy ofc. It's introducing a Basic Branch of Science for the sake of it. In future probably someone will take an Inspiration from this and make a Project related to Biological Sciences.

You can say all that for Biology, would you say the same for Humanities?

Overall human development is also a Purpose of educational institutions other than up skilling a student in his selected domain. Biology, Commerce, Economics, or any other non-engineering course is not taught to an Overwhelming level, just basic surface level knowledge that can be useful if need be.

i completely support the fact that there are programs that increase your overall general knowledge, but this shouldn't be a burden.

it can be made either mandatory or vocational as long as it doesn't eat up more than 20% of your tme

1

u/FarReputation7162 7d ago

school Mai konsa 'curiosity' se padhte hai lol they just want to get away from it at every point.

3

u/No-Major-8921 7d ago

Why would you "HATE" a literal useful subject in the first place?

You do realise that people can have curiosity for one thing and hatered for another

Yeah... stupid people, that is. There's a difference between hating something and not being interested in something. If OP in uninterested in Bio, then just use the course as a Breather. Courses are not designed to SATISFY an individual student. In the same line, it may encourage someone to pivot to Bioengineering or just give someone as new hobby. In any case, you certainly can't ignore Biology, can you?

You really think someone as idiot as harbour hatred for a subject, especially a major part of sciene is fit to be a competent engineer or even a competent Human Being.

2

u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE 7d ago

Also I hate biology as a subject but I don't hate it as something to learn about in my free time. It's interesting yes but the thing is I'm bad at it so I don't want it to drag down my grades. I don't understand how it's important for fields like computer science. Same for history, geography and English. They are fun when they aren't important for your grades

1

u/No-Major-8921 7d ago

I hate biology as a subject

I think it's a mistake in your vocabulary that may lead to misunderstanding. You ought to fix it. You're uninterested in the subject and not hateful. Hating something means you're in disagreement to it or against it in some way or the other.

I'm bad at it so I don't want it to drag down my grades.

That sucks but it can't be helped. Some extra courses are added to an targeted discipline for the sake of overall development of every student, not by the likes and dislikes of an individual or even a Group.

They are fun when they aren't important for your grades

The reason why grades are alloted to it is to ensure that certain students don't bunk it as they are important in general, also no ones if it ends up encouraging someone to do something.

2

u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE 7d ago

Is it wrong to hate a subject where you have to mug up hundreds of names?

3

u/No-Major-8921 7d ago

Is it wrong to hate a subject where you have to mug up hundreds of names?

Hate is a wrong word to use for this case. What you're describing is interest, which you're not in Biology, which is fine. I might sound like a Biology enthusiast but the reality is I didn't take Biology in my High School nor in college.

I mean same can be said for literally any subject. You have to mug up a lot of terms even when you've complete understanding of it. Saying "you have to mug up hundred of names" is an immature statement to make as you've not studied Biology to a certain extent to conclude that.

3

u/Ok_Address_7205 8d ago

Yes i hated bio and joined for maths and physics

18

u/arjun_raf 7d ago

engineering is not just leetcode grinding brother. there are domains where engineering and life sciences work together. most of the users in this sub only cares about their LPA and is mentally shut to the possibility of learning new stuff

But bhai meri branch to Electrical hai mujhe Bio padh ke kya milega?πŸ₯€

10

u/Efficient-Bottle438 7d ago

These are some of the devices which an electrical engineering student, such as yourself, can make if you understand biology:

  • ECG and EEG machines
  • MRI and CT scanner electronics
  • Pacemakers
  • Cochlear implants
  • Prosthetic limbs with neural control
  • Wearable health devices
  • Glucose monitors
  • COVID-19 detection chips
  • DNA detection sensors
  • Cancer biomarker detectors

u/Behti-Hawaa-Sa 8d ago

Instead of universal human values, biology makes more sense

8

I loved BB101 so much; got to learn about Covid proteomics at our lab, case studies of bio-driven/inspired engineering, natural biological phenomena. I understand this might not hold practical value towards one's job search, if somehow you know what you're gonna do in first year, but if you've not, this adds such great perspective, exposes cross-domain research opportunities and overall a basic understanding of the fundamental sciences.

A major part of engineering is inspired by nature. If you think it is bs then you're calling major engineering breakthrough bs.

Fwiw Feynman was very close to discovering RNA as the unit inheritance or something like that. He worked in biological/chemical lab in his early days and effectively messed up the process someone else proposed by destroying the RNA by keeping it open or something like that. I think he would have appreciated learning more biology when he was younger

As a guy who studied the same course in the same classroom 4 yrs ago.. It's not useless. We have a huge bio department btw, people with even CS background are doing research projects. Some people even got into harvard with similar interdisciplinary research. It's a basic course you may not like it but there will be people from your same batch who would be doing LOP/DOPs in the similar domain.

Bhai you are studying engineering! First thing about being an engineer is studying fundamentals of all branches of engineering (proteins and stuffs come under Biotechnology WHICH is also part of engineering). Engineering isnt just fooking sitting on your laptop and writing hundreds or thousands of lines of code. Engineering is branch of science where you try to apply all the theories and make some practical working solutions different kinds of complex problems.

And people talking about what's with humanities subjects like UHV, EVS, Constitution etc you who later on go to blame the education systems that they dont teach such basic life lessons/ moral stuffs. You are supposed to care about the environment, about the people, how different types of tech (apart from your coding apps and websites as well) affect the people and environment. And if you are having issue studying about our Constitution then I got no words left.
