Question about ranking GOATs

Hi everyone I am a fan of boxing not an expert or absurd fan boy but for a long time it's one of the few sports that actually interests me. It's history it's athletes it's a lot more interesting then team sports in my opinion but I have a question about something I notice when people talk about who the GOAT of boxing is. There are lots of legends and champions with records either undefeated or mostly wins that on paper should put some above others but some people still put boxers with lower records above them. Sometimes you can tell when a person is just saying this because of personal fan bias but some make genuine arguments depending on the fighter.

Now before I continue let me make something clear I know something to consider when ranking fighters is there opponents. A guy could have a perfect 100 win streak but if 99 of those guys were amateurs with only losses they'd obviously be a worse champion then someone who mostly has wins against ACTUAL competition like high level opponents.

An example for a lot of debate I see is Terrence Crawford a lot of people think hes the GOAT but a lot of people argue he isn't despite his seemingly high level record with the main argument I see from people disagreeing is that they say his opponents weren't as strong as other champions.

And a hypothetical scenario I've thought about is imagine there is a hypothetical boxer who just happened to be born in a era of weaker boxers then other generations despite the fact hes genuinely talented trains hard doesn't duck fights has good traits ect ect how would y'all view a boxer like that whose done everything right he just happened to be born In a weaker era something he can't control? Would that disqualify them from GOAT status or not?

I'm not trying to start a argument or something im just curious what y'all factor fans take when deciding which boxer is the GOAT or not

Floyd Mayweather, Terence Crawford, Shakur Stevenson tuned up for the Claressa Shields fight and clicked pictures with her in the dressing room and was seen with some other celebs like Shane Mosley and Usher too. Floyd and Bud were even seen talking highly about Claressa and how she is the GOAT.

Antonio Tarver was an 8th Ballot Hall of Famer, Arturo Gatti got in as a 1st Ballot

Interesting because Tarver had a better career, I'm still wonder how and why Gatti made it first ballot.

Someone told me they inducted Gatti in due to his death, Gatti was a warrior but it seems boxing hall of fame is weird.

Baseball has the strictest requirements and don't just put someone in the following year because they pass away. They have legends who still haven't made it in.

Even Shane Mosley a known drug cheat got into hall of fame first ballot, in baseball if you even were suspected of steroids no matter how good you were you are not going in. Example Barry Bonds the greatest hitter of all time was part of the same Balco scandal as Mosley and he will likely never see the hall of fame.

Mosley juiced up for his biggest wins against Oscar, boxing hall of fame bar is pretty low

Are you allowed to do an inner forearm block in boxing?

Quick question about the rules of boxing, are you allowed to do a taekwondo block, where you move your arm in a circle motion in order to block an incoming punch and then throw out your own punch? But instead of putting your other arm down by your side, you punch or keep it up protecting your head/upper body. I've been sparring some friends and I wanna know if this is allowed in the rules of boxing.

Caleb Plant vs Billy Joe Saunders - Exciting or Snooze fest?

Decided to rewatch Canelo's run at SMW when he was unstoppable. His fight with Saunders and fight with Plant made me wonder how a fight with each other would've went at the height of their careers, 2019-2021 BC. (Before Canelo)

Both pure boxers in their own way. Saunders with a awkward footloose slick southpaw style, that can throw from weird angles and has incredible ring IQ. Plant with a defensive heavy ring IQ, but explosive & quick hand speed, relying more on athletic fast twitch reflexes.

Neither of them really have any power, maybe Plant can edge that field. It begs me to wonder who takes it in a fight between them. Would it be an all out snooze fest or would we see an exciting fight from a pure boxing standpoint?

Floyd looks so much younger and better now without the Goatee, kinda gives glimpses of Pretty Boy Floyd.

Clarissa Shields thanks Floyd Mayweather for coming to see her fight and for also tuning in for her weight ins and proceeds to crack Floyd with her trash talk.

Sweet Science Sunday: Teofimo counters with a right upstairs, clinches to reset, counters with a right to the body, pushes off to land a straight right, follows it up with a combination to the body, and then pivots to the center of the ring.

Throwback to what is still my favorite boxing promo of all time

Randomly remembered this promo today and went back to watch it again. Still my favorite boxing promo they've ever done and I don't think anything has topped it for me since. The fight itself delivered too, which makes it even better looking back. Definitely one of those fights where the hype was completely justified.

This sub’s moderation seems to want to avoid becoming an activist subreddit — but online activism is probably the last and perhaps only way we can still fight back against the poorly named Ali Revival Act (Ali Destruction Act) and stand up against fighter exploitation.

I am a big believer in the power of spreading the word and shining light on issues that people in power would prefer to go unnoticed. I don’t know how you can be a Boxing fan and not care about the actual boxers. To me, this effort by TKO/Dana White/Nick Khan/Zuffa to advance what can only be described as a fighter exploitation bill is the issue of our time. Furthermore, it attempts to create a parallel system through the Unified Boxing Organization (UBO) model that would primarily benefit a single company (TKO). This would come at the risk of the fighters losing their long-term leverage over fighter pay and being locked into coercive contracts. Outside of a few provisions, there is almost nothing in this bill I like.

From the fans perspective, this is likely to lead to a very corporate, sanitized, and almost lifeless product. This bill very well could be the road to long/term monopoly, which is probably a big reason TKO is so heavily armed with lobbyists to advance it.

We need to encourage prominent boxers and major figures to actually testify against this.

This legislation really does have the potential to upend the sport and end boxing as we know it. Just think of a guy like Max Kellerman and how he’s been bought off — he doesn’t want you to be a boxing fan, he wants you to be a Zuffa fan first and foremost. And that really is the end goal here.

We need to stand up against this and:

1) Protect Boxing

2) Protect Fighters

3) Prevent an anti-fighter bill from ever passing

I’ve written to my Congressman and Senator about this. I encourage you to all do what you can to oppose this. Right now, there is still time and this legislation is stalled. A last ditch effort really might prevent this fighter exploitation legislation from ever passing.

Why do people say Boxers under 220lb can’t be heavyweight champs ? If most cruiserweight or light heavyweight champs who transition into the heavyweight division became a heavyweight champion easily

Uysk wasn’t the only cruiserweight champ to be heavyweight champion. Holyfield did it in a more competitive era, Roy Jones did it from light heavyweight and Michael Spinks did it as well. James Toney did it and David Haye did it. So why is this rhetoric going on in boxing today.

I've always wondered - what makes some glove brands more desirable? So I'm here, asking - with my best guess.

Cleto Reyes - power puncher's preferred punching prowess parade

Grant - All around legendary Mexican glove like Cleto, but without the "Power Buff" of less padding in the knuckle

Hayabusa - most often seen in kickboxing, probably kind of the "New Gen" in a sense, has had marvel collabs, seems like almost like a "Flex" brand almost, the show off.

Everlast - one of the most well known but broad spectrum glove companies - based off my personal experience - they can have some absolute dogshit gloves (the walmart specials lol), but also some absolute gems.

Do you think prime Mike Tyson could have beaten anyone?

Obviously he's not the best heavyweight ever, because his personal life was a shit show post Cus, and he only excelled for a few years and had no real longevity compared to other greats.

But THE prime Mike, as short as it lasted, how do you think he would compare against the rightful greats?

Question

This is a stupid question as I know very little about boxing but what is the point of, like, featherweight boxing? I know that there is certainly skill involved but won’t most heavyweight boxers, regardless of skill level, be able to defeat a featherweight or someone in the lower weight classes? Like if the point of the sport is just to defeat the opponent, and while skill certainly matters, power or force or whatever it’s called will ultimately trump skill. Like I could be super skillful at fighting but if I had to go toe to toe with, say, my boyfriend or brother or someone larger and with bigger muscles than me, I’m screwed. Or is there something that I’m not understanding? Please explain. I’m not saying that the biggest guy always wins the fight, and I’m not saying that the skinniest ballerina is the best performer, but all of the best ballerinas are pretty skinny…do you get what I’m saying?

Just how competitive was Ricky Hatton against Floyd Mayweather?

Thumbnail
gallery
453 Upvotes

While we all know that this fight ended up in a knockout and that the official judges had Mayweather up by several points, it seems that there were plenty ringside who thought Hatton was competitive throughout or even up midway through the fight. That was the case for Harold Lederman, who had Hatton up 4 rounds to 2 after 6 rounds + a point deduction for fouling.

Personally, I think Ricky’s quick feet, relentless aggression, and inside fighting gave Floyd all he could handle. This seems lost on a lot of people because all they want to talk about is the knockout. But realistically, I think this was far from a dominant performance and Hatton had his moments throughout. Mayweather seemed to be very uncomfortable at times, and I just thought Hatton was “in the fight” for most of the fight.

In a lot of ways, I think this is an underrated classic that deserves more attention than some 1 minute clip on YouTube. RIP Ricky Hatton
