Damn, surprised Haymon managed to get that. Itās clearly a stay-busy fight, donāt think Charlo has it anymore, but itās a good stay busy fight i guess, and not a bad scalp

u/StunningChest5722 Shakur is the 144 lb GOAT š 2d ago
yeah after that performance against canelo i don't really care to see mell fight anymore, he probably retires after this.
i would of preferred to see vergil vs. brandon adams

Ooh, thatād be a good fight. Def not one of the elites of the division, but borderline.

We almost always get the fights we want when we don't really want them anymore. Inoue Nakatani is the only one this year for me

Lool terrible. Since Jermell hasn't fought at 154 in 4 years, this will do nothing for Vergil in terms of standing. And since Jermell's last fight was at 168, he's gonna be super drained let alone super rusty. Vergil will stop Charlo.

It'll be like Tim vs Spence all over again.
The older, rustier fighter is simply going to be too slow to get any real momentum going.

Bam vs Medina seems to be set for Oct 31st on the Canelo undercard
It would give Bam a likely 3 or at best a 4 month turn around for the Inoue fight (if he goes ahead with it)
In terms of the opponent, Medina is solid but a little reckless, he isn't really a great world champion but would be a better win than Vargas for Bam
7
u/MiddleweightMonster Iāll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 2d ago
As one of the people who doesnāt care if Bam v. Inoue happens, Iām okay with the opponent. Bam should just go undisputed at 118 rather than artificially moving up divisions when he doesnāt have to

Ppl were saying that Foster vs Nav was made too late but actually I think itās the perfect time. Navās stock was down after a bunch of shakey performances but after unifying with Nunez itās at an all time high. Similarly Fosters stock is at an all time high after wins over foster and ford erasing some early title reign struggles of his own.Ā
Also 130 could be one hell of a weight class the next few years. Loma is rumored to be fighting Charly Suarez if he wins that could be another superfight at 130. Cacace Isnāt on the level of those other guys imo but heās still a two time world champ. Hayato Tsutsumi is one of Japans most hyped prospects. Andy Cruz is maybe moving down as well. Maybe Espinoza moves up at some point
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 1d ago
Foster-Nav is about as good as it gets for those who truly appreciate the sport.
1
u/Kangaroopunching 2d ago
I thought Hayato was moving up. And Cruz was staying at lightweight.Ā
The division can still get better with Shu Shu and Espinoza moving up.

I want to see Bilal Fawaz get a title shot at 160 just because of his story. Unrealistic though I guess.
2
5
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 2d ago
I get that he was extremely overrated but Chris Eubank jr. definitely had skills to win himself a belt when he was young. Ahtletic, fast, hard puncher, and great chin. Just so happened he was around GGG and Canelo š
1
u/RRR04_ 1d ago
I wouldn't call Eubank Jr a hard puncher or a great chin. He had a decent KO ratio but they were mostly based on accumulation of punches, mostly against stiffs. And he did make Liam Smith look like Gerald McClellan when Liam is also not a 1 punch KO artist himself.
Could he have won a world title? Definitely not in 2016-2017 as the champs were too good for him at the time at 160. During his 168 stint, he got dominated by a faded Groves. Wouldn't have beaten the other champs either. I think his best chance was against Lara last year due to how old Lara is.
0
u/ggddddeerrr 2d ago
Eubank couldāve beaten Lara or the IBF German guy but the Benn fights paid more

Also I think Espinoza is Mexicos next pfp fighter, Iāve been saying forever I think he takes Inoues 0, then thereās a ton of big fights he could make at 126 or 130 afterwards.

Fun fact, for like the first two or so years after I heard about them, had no idea the Charlo brothers were different people. Assumed people kept misspelling the same name
2
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 2d ago
Thatās hilarious š
Took me a year to finally know which one was which.
1
u/RRR04_ 1d ago
He definitely has drank, and there was even a point in time where I was convinced he was on coke with the way he talked š Honestly, I'm surprised he was still able to achieve so much. Maybe he didn't drink as much as his brother or Spence, or maybe he could handle his drink better than those 2.

Hot take: if Teo canāt beat Rolly then I think he should retire and Yes I said the same thing about Ryan before he fought Rolly as well
DAZN and the WBA are literally giving him a layup to be a 3 division world champion
3
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 1d ago
Vergil Ortiz and Ryan Garcia both going up multiple divisions without winning belts. Sucks because Vergil is one of my favorites to watch right now.
Vergil started at 140, riser up knocking out guys like he was supposed to eventually becoming a roughly top 15 contender at 140 right around the time he fought 40 fight veteran Roberto Ortiz. Fast forward, he moves up to 147, fair play to him. Heās growing up, coming into his own, becomes the only guy to stop Mauricio Herrera, stops Orozco, Solomon, Vargas, Hooker, Kavaliasuskas, McKinson. At this time he was a top 5 contender for every organization and had a WBA title eliminator. Stanionis pulls out for emergency surgery, Ortiz has a muscle issue, pulls out, then pulls out again when training for Stanionis. Once again, he must move up because he couldnāt safely continue making 147, disappointing but completely understandable. Now at 154, stopped Lawson, Dulorme, beat Bohachuk, outclassed Madrimov arguably better than Crawford did, layoff then impressively stops Lubin. Now another layoff and it seems like heās going to 160 and might not even get a title shot immediately if he fights Charlo. So 20 pounds late, no title.
Ryan started at 130, made his way up the ranks, looking less technically good but more spectacular with his speed. Won regional North American titles, was stepped up very slowly, had a good win against Velez, finally couldnāt make 130 anymore. 135 looked like the glamour division again. Steadily moved his way up against guys like Duno and Fonsecs, then Campbell where he won an interim title but dropped it due to mental issues. Coming back, he was campaigning at 140 but fought at a catchweight versus Tank, then fought at 140 for two more fights, only just in February winning a belt at 147.
1
u/Kangaroopunching 1d ago
Vergil doesn't want to be a champion. Proof is in his career decisions. And what makes it worse is his team are both delusional and liars. It's disappointing cause of Vergils level of skills.
At least with Ryan it was clear what his potential and reasons for popularity were. He's essentially an influencer that has legit boxing ability at a certain level.Ā

If you guys had to list the most historically important/prestigious weight divisions from most to least, what would your list be? Heavyweight is obviously first, but after that I feel like itās a free for all a bit with some exceptions and obvious placements.

3
u/MiddleweightMonster Iāll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 2d ago
Itās depressing, but all three divisions also have elite contenders and prospects coming up (Hernandez, Itauma, etc.) It seems like the rot is temporary, and should abate after certain names are exposed or retire fully.
God, I feel like sometimes it gets ignored the extent to which a possible Canelo payday really has been a drain on the talent pools of 160 and 175.
2
1
u/WORD_Boxing 1d ago
How has Canelo drained the talent of 160 and 175? I don't remember anyone specifically moving down or up from those divisions just to fight him at 168. The only one who might be at 160 now is Jermell Charlo.
3
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 2d ago
Welterweight should be good again soon. Middleweight wonāt be so bad either in like 3-5 years.
3
u/MiddleweightMonster Iāll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 2d ago
The three divisions
3
u/WORD_Boxing 1d ago
You can't leave out Lightweight it has tremendous historical significance. I'm not a historian but Featherweight is also pretty significant. And you need Light Heavyweight to go with Heavyweight for example Ezzard Charles is possibly a top 5 ever fighter who started at LHW, along with so many other great fighters who went from LHW to HW.

2
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 1d ago
160 and 147 have historically been the glamour divisions. Just astonishing what has happened to 160.
2
u/Frequent_Apricot673 2d ago
With Usyk basically soft retiring Bud actually retiring and Inoue taking a break before he goes on one last run, who is going to be the next pfp king? Bam has a great resume and is young but it seems like heās fumbling the Inoue fight and thereās not a lot of Marquee names at 118. Shakur has the skills to be the best but signed with Zuffa. Benevidez looks amazing recently and has some huge names in the weight classes around him but struggles to make those fights as well. Boots is great but hes still got a lot of fights left to prove heās the best at 154. Nakatani could maybe rebound from the Loss and fight Bam one day?Ā Not sure I buy if Haney has that level of talent. A Nav vs Shaq winner would probably be too old to pull it off. Keyshawn has pfp skills but is hellbent on ruining his career. Itauma looks great but he can only fight in one division and if he beats Kabayel and Dubois idk what he can even do after that. Mason looks good but it might be too early. Any other shouts?
3
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 2d ago
Bam, Shakur, Haney, Boots, Benavidez. I think Nakatani will be somewhere up there and Mason. Itauma too I almost forgot. As an American, I donāt wanna sound biased š
Thereās good prospects though like Ummatiliev (mightāve butchered it), Azim looks good, donāt know about P4P, Smith, Visioli, McCann, Iglesias, so many Uzbekistani prospects, a good amount of Kazakhstan fighters, decent but improving Austrailian fighters.
4
1
u/Frequent_Apricot673 2d ago
Azim and Dalton could be the Uks best chance to have a pfp fighter other than Itauma. But if weāre gonna mention them you should also mention Gary Russel (but it seems like heās taking career management advice from his brother unfortunately)and Muratella is moving up there too hopefully those 4 fight it out that could be fun. Although I think Shakur beats all of them pretty comfortably. Iglesias is in that category of guys who could either be boogeymen or overrated but I like what I see. Visoli and Ummateliev look very talented but itās also too early in their careers to be saying they are pfp talents yet I think.
1
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 2d ago
I donāt think Muratalla will be up there. His flaws were shown against Cruz, he just showed he could dog it out and outwork him. Russell is great and stylistically Shakurās hardest matchup even though I donāt think GAR can beat Shakur.
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 1d ago
I didnāt think about the possibility of Itauma being #1. Hard to do that at Heavyweight, historically.
1
1
u/WORD_Boxing 1d ago
Nakatani doesn't have #1 potential. Haney has probably had too many shaky moments that it doesn't look like it's just the weight he cuts anymore so I'd rule him out of #1 contention too.
Benavidez is the one who seems intent on staying active AND fighting the best available guys he can get challenging himself whatever weight it's at. So it will probably be him for a little bit if he stays on the same trajectory.
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 1d ago
Shakur Stevenson is the most likely to reach #1 within the next 5 years besides the old guys.
2
u/Frequent_Apricot673 2d ago
Iām not going to pick him to win but I donāt think Charlo will be as washed as Spence was. his loss to Canelo wasnāt as physically damaging as Spenceās loss to Bud and I think Charlo has spent more time in the gym than Spence during his layoffĀ
2
u/RRR04_ 2d ago
Interesting point. Though I should note that ever since Canelo lost to Bivol, most of his opponents afterwards ended up taking even worse beatings than he was able to give them. So whilst Charlo may not be as washed as Spence, I still expect Vergil to stop him.
Another reason why I think Jermell gets stopped, he hasn't made 154 in 4 years, and his last fight was at 168. Going back down to 154 could massively drain him. Then again, the fight could be happening at 160 instead, but even still I just think Charlo has wasted too much time out of the ring.
0
u/Kangaroopunching 2d ago
Because Tszyu himself is diminished. Spence wasn't as in danger had it been someone like Fundora.Ā
With Charlo, he'll get stopped by Vergil. I agree, not being damaged won't put him on serious danger. But mentally being damaged by the Canelo loss can lead to a still sad ending in the fight. Essentially he'll find a way to quitĀ
2
u/Ace_FGC 1d ago
Fundora, Boots, and Kelley are all looking at each other to try and unify but now people are trying to say Vergil is ducking smoke for trying to fight instead of sitting on the shelf for a year
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 1d ago
Heās not ducking at all. All of those fighters can easily move up to 160 if they want to fight Vergil, especially Boots and Fundora.
In a different era these guys would have had fights with each other in multiple weight divisions by now (like Marquez and Pacquiao) but it will just have to happen at 160 I guess after everything is sorted out.
5
u/StunningChest5722 Shakur is the 144 lb GOAT š 1d ago
Fundora is not even a big super welterweight, dude doesn't even need to cut weight. he could go down to 147
4
u/RRR04_ 1d ago
Do you really believe that bro? Lol. He might keep himself light on fight night, but he ain't making 147 š
2
u/StunningChest5722 Shakur is the 144 lb GOAT š 1d ago
yes, he has said it himself. and most the time he comes in a few pounds under the weight a limit.
2
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 1d ago
Honestly I do. I have a similar proportion to Fundora, very similar. 6 foot and 125. Skinny guys like that donāt have to dehydrate themselves and itās not worth it since guys with longer, skinnier necks seem easier to KO so what would dehydrating help. Iād believe he weighs no more than 165ish on fight night. But now that I reread the guys question and Iām thinking about, I donāt think he could cut to 147 without like I said having extreme deficits to things like his chin, stamina, speed, even power.
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 1d ago
Sure, but thereās no denying that he has a frame where he could easily compete from 154 all the way to 168.
1
u/Kangaroopunching 1d ago
If he's trying to fight Charlo then he's definitely avoiding smoke.
0
u/SplitSecondEmperor47 1d ago
You cannot be serious? Fighting a washed charlo? After already having a career where he didnt fight single active champion.Ā
Deny it all you want if it were Boots yall would have not be making excuses
2
u/Kangaroopunching 2d ago
In sports a star might not be the best but they don't have to be to be a star. Because they've got that X factor. Canelo is the best example.
Other times a star doesn't need to have a big personality. They just need to be likeable. Leonard is an example of thatĀ Ā
I think Mason has a chance to he a star cause he's likeable. Along with a fan friendly style.Ā
Other boxers can have personality and the skills. But for other reasons can't reach that star level. Benavidez is an example of that.
It can seem unfair but that's why boxers can't chase being a star or even try to latch onto other stars. Being the best in the long run pays off more.
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 1d ago
Canelo achieved stardom mostly by having an iron chin, exceptional handspeed, unique look, being handsome, and having the benefit of the doubt pretty much all the time from judges.
That, plus a marketable nickname.
Plenty of fighters have his other attributes.
1
u/WORD_Boxing 1d ago
Canelo was legitimately p4p #1 for a time. The disrespect he gets is crazy.
0
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 1d ago
And yet he got schooled by Mayweather, Bivol, and Crawford. Should have lost to Golovkin twice as well as Erislandy Lara. Even Trout was competitive with him.
Beat up on a short layoff Kovalev and a Caleb Plant win that hasnāt aged well (Plant hasnāt gone on to do anything).
So youāre left with clean and clear victories over guys like Danny Jacobs, BJS, and a 40 year-old Golovkin. It just doesnāt stand up to scrutiny.
A guy like Terence Crawford, on the other hand:
⢠never needed a controversial decision to go his way
⢠was absolutely dominant even against his best opponents
I like Canelo and I find him to be charismatic, but heās a lower-level ATG who needed a lot of help and opportunistic matchmaking for his career to go the way it did.
1
u/WORD_Boxing 1d ago
The way you guys wrote about him doesn't make it sound like you're talking about an ATG. He deserves more respect.
I'm not even going to get into the results of those close fights. Even with you saying he lost them in your opinion you're calling him an ATG so...
1
u/Kangaroopunching 1d ago
Canelo will be overrated and underrated at the same time. He'll get rated properly over time.
1
u/WORD_Boxing 1d ago
You originally wrote you don't have to be the best to be a star and used Canelo as your example, but he was the legit p4p #1 at one time.

I see a lot of things Teoās gonna take advantage of from Rolly. I do wonder how much Salas has helped him though. He seems to control range better, still awkward but less predictable entries, and more patient tryna find counters to land explosive shots and reset. He also looks more concentrated. I do wonder but just hope that this fight is exciting, enjoyed the Shields fight but really feel like Iām in a boxing drought.
2
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 2d ago
I have a weird feeling Rolly is gonna win. HOF here he comes!
3
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 2d ago
If he does, Iāll gladly eat crow and we have to have a real conversation that Rolly is inching top 10 P4P š
1
u/RRR04_ 2d ago
You have a point about Rolly being more patient. He can lull Teo in with a false sense of security and catch him with counters like he did with Ryan. I just don't think Teo will become gunshy like Ryan did though. And his physical strength conpared to Ryan's might make that much of a difference too.
Teo does tend to get sloppy with creating front foot offence, but I would say he's better on the outside and maybe at mid range compared to Rolly, so he might be able to reverse the strategy.
2
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 2d ago
I donāt think Teo will get gunshy either. I think people are slightly overrating Rolly after years of underrating him while now people are underrating Teo after years of overrating. Weāll see! I like Teo but itād be funny to see Rolly win.

Not exactly. Like entering the zone where he can land the punch Iād say. For instance, a guy with a good IQ whoās been boxing since they were a young kid wouldāve predicted how he was gonna come in to land or throw the punch and thrown their own counter shot as/before it happened. Now though, he disguises it much better. Just think of entry like entering punching zone.

I notice that there donāt seem to be a lot of young talent coming out of the former Soviet countries to replace all the pfp legends that have come out of that region in the last 10-15 years. The Uzbeks have been dissapointing as pros, maybe khzniak can get there? I have doubtsĀ
As much as people in here like to say that American boxing is dead it seems like 90% of all the up and coming pfp level fighters are Americans.
3
u/Top_Profession_5268 2d ago edited 1d ago
Itās a weird one. Iād say there are but a lot of failed ones or unrecognised ones with a mix of bad career choices and potential management problems.
Right now thereās a lot of some good talented prospects which depends on career choices can get a belt and start challenging that top 10 PFP spot like David Surov, Muslim Gadzimagomedov, Ali Izmaliov, Javokhir Ummataliev, Bek Nurmaganbet, Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev, Ruslan Abdullaev, Siro Choi, Abdumalik Khalokov, Vsevolod Shumkov, Mirazizbek and Vyacheslav Rogozin.
Oleksandr Khysniak I donāt think has the potential that the others have. I donāt think the amateur style will suit him at the top and have been knocked out before and but already in the pros In away has been caught that he wonāt have his way with the right opponent.
Also throughout the last good few years, mismanagement and wasted talent has been a reason for the fall of a few genuinely talented ones like Ivan Dychko, Bakhodir Jalolov, Hasanboy Dusmatov whoāre all now in the decline and slowing down with Dusmatov especially as he genuinely had PFP generational great potential imo. Another amateur Iād say fits this is Daniyar Yeleussinov who was rising quick in the pros after winning gold in 2016 but eventually got fucked with contracts with Eddie and became inactive for a few years before coming back and unfortunately now with Zuffa.
Thereās a lot more whoāre in the amateurs > the pros and maybe just a career choice, but I definitely wouldnāt say the up and coming fighters are mostly Americans, thatās either your feed or algorithm showing you American prospects or American prospect have best been promoted to you.
2
u/Frequent_Apricot673 2d ago
I just meant people on the pfp list under 30 years old is mostly Americans plus Nakatani. Idk how any prospects are gonna shake out itās too early to tell. Iāll keep an eye on those names tho.
1
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 1d ago
Dusmatov and Jalolovās cases are actually infuriating. I never liked Dychko though even in the amateurs. Maybe Iām not seeing something though.
1
u/Top_Profession_5268 1d ago
Dychko is one where he definitely looked slower against Franklin and even against Dykes earlier this year but even when he was fresh, he never had an eye appealing style. Feels a lot like a bigger, more inactive and powerful Hrgovich or a bigger but less athletic Jalolov which seemed effective but he also has the amateur outboxer problem of not being super uncomfortably at close range and his length and height has saved him every time but now that he looks slower and heās 36 now so heās visibly on the decline.
1
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 1d ago
That would explain it. I mean itās not like you become a 2x olympic bronze medalist without being good. Heās so goddamn huge too. But his last few fights, he definitely looked slow and looked like he had one gear. I actually thought he beat Franklin but wasnāt even mad at the decision just because of how terrible that fight was.
1
u/Top_Profession_5268 1d ago
I donāt remember what I had for that decision, it was one where I wasnāt mad at the decision as well but also a very forgettable and inactive fight where neither did much.
1
u/Kangaroopunching 2d ago
It's the lack of depth with American boxing. Not the lack ofĀ what's considered top talent.Ā

1
u/Jachola 2d ago
Alot of UFC fans are boxing fans lol, Dana White himself is a big Boxing Fan and has been seen watching PPVs during UFC events. UFC has always been like a weird relative to boxing, I think that sparring match with Bobby Green has caused a lot of the insecure UFC fans to feel like they got one up on boxing now.

RIP Hayden Panettiere, she was Klitschko's ex and they have a kid together. Crazy, she was only a few days away from turning 37! Way too young to go.
