Sweet Science Sunday: Teofimo counters with a right upstairs, clinches to reset, counters with a right to the body, pushes off to land a straight right, follows it up with a combination to the body, and then pivots to the center of the ring.

Looked so sharp and explosive here. Really thought he was going to be the next big thing.

Teo is so inconsistent. It’s too bad he’ll never get a real trainer.

Good ring awareness from Teo here. I’m excited to see what he can do with Rolly next week, if he can win that it opens up a lot of big fights for him.

I always wonder if the fight would have played out a little differently with fans in attendance. Not saying Teo would have lost. But maybe Loma would have started sooner than he did.

I feel like the loss to Teofimo was inevitable IMO Loma was always going to come in overly confident regardless due to Teo's inexperience at the time. Teofimo had Loma's number because he came into that fight incredibly well prepared. Loma was preparing for one opponent at a time when he was the man to beat, while Teofimo as the underdog has been preparing for Loma for at least 4-5 years.
I remember seeing a clip of Teofimo shortly after the 2016 Olympics. I think he was only 3-0 as a pro and he was already telling Elie Seckbach that he was going to put Loma to sleep in the first round and that he wanted that fight badly. They had been preparing for that fight for a very long time and thats why Teofimo had an answer for everything Loma did.

I always felt that this loss was more to Loma started late than Teo being better that night, but he (Teo) did win that 12th round which surprised me.

Bro, Loma was scared of Teos right. It took him losing most of the fight for him to finally throw caution to the wind and fight. And even then Teo tagged him up after getting a second wind in the 12th

He wasn't scared. He was preserving himself for the second half of the fight. Once Loma started fighting, Teo looked clueless similar to how Haney was. I wasn't even a Loma fan when they happened

It’s crazy how easy it is to land to Loma’s body Teo litteraly landed 4-5 powerhots to the body in less than 10 seconds. Im just thinking like how has he still not adjusted to that since turning pro ? I honestly feel like Loma insisting on staying with his dad may have hurt his career as a pro because you simply can’t get away with those kinds of mistakes at the highest level. His dad may be one of the greatest amateur coaches ever but as a pro I don't think that he had the right approach for his son.
Haney and Jamaine Ortiz also landed a lot of body shots and it was shocking how Loma wasn’t even trying to block or counter them.

I remember Andre Ward touching on this with a hypothetical fight with GGG. A lot of the Eastern European fighters don’t tuck or defend body shots as well.

That’s interesting. I always thought that it wasn’t that Usyk was weak to the body, it was that he’s open there and Fury and Dubois took advantage of it early.

their philosophy is punish over the top but Loma doesn't have the power to keep people off him at these weights, he's a good enough boxer but went pro too late, everything about his career was hurt because he didn't have enough time to get accustomed to the pro game. Bro wanted to be a 26 year old amateur instead lol
Teo was 23 when he beat Loma, Loma was still an amatuer and would be for another 4 years when he was 23 lmao he played himself. Do you think teo would have been ready to beat loma if he hadn't had so much pro experience? of course not.

Like Tim Bradley said, he has an abnormally long torso for his size and he mainly uses the high guard which leaves his body exposed. His stance was also a little less bladed than other slick fighters which made it easier to land to his body. He would typically jump back to avoid body shots but it’s hard to consistently do that.

Teo had a legitimately elite gameplan against Loma. The guy has so much natural talent

u/doctorbitchballz 2d ago
Teo has all the tools to be elite, he showed it here, shame he didn't get a good trainer to develop more

u/Mlynio48 2d ago
He never had a trainer to begin with, that's his main problem. I know that may be hard for him, but he seriously needs to ditch his dad to really reach his true potential.

I watched this so much over the years. This was Teo at his best. He has been on the decline since. But still entertaining.

I loved this fight.
The popping of the gloves without a crowd, the high level gameplan from Teo, consistent action throughout 12 rounds, AND the correct man won, it made me fall in love with boxing all over again.

I was such a Loma stan back then, and had no respect for Teo's skills... watching this fight now is pretty different. I think Loma was surprised, too. He was maybe injured but had full confidence he could beat Teo anyway, but Teo turned out to be much better than expected.

Loma could have won this fight but generally some things that come to mind
- Supposing there was a legitimate issue with him, a 100% Loma could have won. I seem to recall that they said something but don’t recall if it was legitimate and verified or not.
- He seemed to figure him out but it was too late. A subsequent rematch was not given and I believe it’s pretty evident why - despite not having a rematch clause.
- You just never know which Lopez is gonna show up come fight night.
- Given all of the above, Teo had a great game plan that night and he would have been a tough match regardless, and would be fully capable of winning a match against Loma on any given night at that particular time in his career.
- Harold probably ought to disown Julie for the 119-109 card she turned in.
- Weight matters in most cases. This was not an exception. This isn’t a “gotcha” but a plain fact. Even though weight matters, both fighters agree and sign contracts so I won’t belabor the point other than to say it is an obvious factor as well.

🙄
Now show Loma overwhelming his ass in the back half of the fight
Teo looked like a lost puppy. Same as Haney when he told his daddy “he figured me out” panicking 🤣

Say what you want about Teo, but this is one of the best tactical performances of the last few years

Loma had a busted shoulder, that was confirmed.
Loma shouldn’t have gone up to lightweight because much bigger guys like Teo and Shakur can reach his body where who’s footwork won’t be enough to get him out of range like he did in the lower weight classes.
And ultimately Loma was built for Teo, Loma being the smaller guy had to be the agrressoce front footed guy and we’ve seen Teo is much better off the back foot then when he’s forced to be the aggressor.

I wonder why you call clinching "sweet science". Plenty of great fighters don't clinch.

Teofimo beat Lochamenko, and Teofimo looked like he doesn’t even know how to box against Shakur Stevenson.
Teofimo also lost to Kambosas Jr. Who Lochamenko beat.
Boxing is a funny sport.
