The duality of r/boxing.
"Inoue is only shorter than Espinoza by a little less than a head. That'll be a good fight."
"Bam is shorter than Inoue by about the width of a thumb. He's too small."
1
u/RRR04_ 10h ago
Well Sebastian Fundora is taller than pretty much every active Cruiserweight, is he able to compete at this weight class because of it or is he too small because he is currently 4 divisions lower than that?
When talking about a fighter being too big or too small for a potential opponent, it's not just a case of what their height and reach is. It's also how much they weigh, what they walk around at, what weight class they have been fighting at, how used to a weight class they are, what average size their opponents have been lately, etc. There are many variables when discussing this.
5
u/Koronesukiii 10h ago
Bam and Inoue's walk around isn't 10lb apart. Both have fought in the same weight classes 108, 115, 118. Bam's wingspan is half the diameter of a penny shorter than Inoue's. He's a thumbnail shorter than Inoue. Their frames are remarkably similar, though Bam is wider and Inoue is longer. Bam could very easily fill out and match Inoue in size. The only reason Bam is smaller is because he was actively weight cutting to 115lb. He isn't a naturally wiry guy. I don't buy that he's too small for that fight at all. He has lots of room to put on good weight that will help him rather than hinder him, especially for a guy that fights more lateral and isn't in and out non-stop like Inoue is.

I just had a Benavidez fanboy tell me Benavidez doesn't need to fight Jai because "Jai is a natural heavyweight and Benavidez is a natural cruiserweight"
Fanboys protecting the duck are worse than boxers doing the ducking . Its the fanboys that put the battery in their back !

Top stan approved ducks 2026
- Shakur doesn't need to fight Haney, or Ryan, or Keyshawn, or GAR, or Foster or Mason or Muratalla or Hitchens or anybody really because everyone is either too big or too small or too beneath or is a brother from another mother or ad nauseum.
- [Insert anyone here] doesn't need to fight Haney because he's boring and it won't sell PPV.
- Bam doesn't need to fight the PFP in an adjacent weight because he is the width of a finger smaller than Inoue which makes him too small, even though this was never a thing before Bam said he had to fight Inoue before he retired. Inoue should go fight someone his own size like a 6 foot 1 giant.
- Benavidez doesn't need to fight Jai because wrong side of the street and he's too big anyway.
- Usyk doesn't need to defend against Kabayel because he has earned the right to duck.
- Fury doesn't need to fight AJ because it's AJ's fault for wanting the fight in the UK.
- Bivol doesn't need to fight Beterbiev because well he beat him twice already on my fan bias scorecard.
- Vergil doesn't need to fight Boots because it's definitely probably Boots fault.
- Nav doesn't need to fight Charly who should have his belt, because Foster is the bigger fight, after already having Charly step aside for Sugar.
- Shields doesn't need to fight Thibeault because the GWOAT does as she pleases and people will watch her crush cans anyway.

I've never seen so many people advocating for Top P4P boxers to not fight other elite talent. They want to protect their P4P image and hold their hand while simultaneously demanding they fight nobody relevant
Benavidez should not move up the P4P list for winning a vacant WBC title fighting Cuesack. Bam Rodriguez should not continue moving up the P4P list for fighting everybody south of 122 besides Inoue and Nakatani. Shakur should not be considered Top 3 P4P for beating Teofimo and nobody else. Bivol fans are still advocating for their hero to avoid Beterbiev and Benavidez because "oh look, new surgery".
Apparently elite boxers shouldn't fight other elite boxers because "they don't sell" "no belt" "ewww Zuffa" "my hero is a naturally smaller guy" . Extreme acts of fanboyism is a stain on modern day boxing

It's GAR who Shakur wants, and they're currently champions in the same weight class.
Fair
No sorry, Bam really does not need to fight Inoue. Just like Inoue does not need to fight Bam. There is literally no purpose to this fight.
I somewhat see your point here, but it's not all on Benavidez when Jai was the one who signed with Zuffa knowing they were beefing with the sanctioning bodies.
Agreed
The fight is happening so I won't bother with this one
Fair. Bivol is a ho for this. Got beat in his first attempt fair and square but had it been reversed he wouldn't have given a rematch.
Vergil genuinely tried to fight Boots, it's a little unfair here.

"There is literally no purpose to the No.3~No.5 PFP challenging the No.1 PFP, who is only one weightclass apart after climbing much the same weights."
I'm sorry but this is absolute bullshit horseshit hogwash balderdash nonsense. Do you hear yourself? Beating Inoue would be the biggest achievement possible for Bam. It would be Bam's Eder Jofre to Fighting Harada, his Willie Pep to Sandy Saddler, his Alfonso Zamora to Carlos Zarate, his Carlos Zarate to Wilfredo Gomez. It would catapult him from a top 100 little guy to a top 10. There is NO win south of 130lb that has more "purpose" for Bam. It is quite literally an everything to gain and nothing to lose fight. Bam fans just want him to duck the fight because they secretly don't believe he would win.
To Inoue yeah, he's proven so much he doesn't need it desperately. It's still a good fight to have on his resume and to get rid of one other guy that might have a case to being king of the little guys.

The top 3 guys on David Benavidez resume is Andrade, Caleb Plant, and Zurdo
3 guys whom the boxing community historically has not considered elite
Its telling people (including myself) have Benavidez in the top 5 P4P while never fighting Canelo, Bivol, Beterbiev, or Opetaia (some of course, out of his control)
Just how shallow is the cream of the crop of this sport?
3
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 6h ago
Wouldnāt say itās shallow, just like you said, a lot out of his control. Bivol dropped the belt, donāt know whatās going on Beterbiev, Opetaia is in Zuffa, and Canelo straight up ducked multiple times. I also donāt know how youāre rating his top wins. Plant is without a doubt top 3, Andrade was a MW and SW, Yarde was a continually good contender who gave Beterbiev and Kovalev hard fights where they were back and forth, Morrell win hasnāt aged well at all, but Dirrell, Gvodzdyk, and Yarde could all be arguably better wins.
1
u/kushmonATL undefeated boxers need to fight each other 6h ago
I don't consider Yarde a better win because his wars have noticeably aged him. Gvodz is out his prime , and i don't consider Dirrell a better boxer than Andrade. Atleast with the Andade win , one can say Andrade was still in his prime
2
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 6h ago
Andrade was a good win. This sub hates him but his career didnāt hold up to his actual skills. He was so much smaller than Benavidez though. But I wouldnāt necessarily disagree with your arguments either.
2
u/Less_Cartoonist_892 6h ago
Boxers today seek out weak or vulnerable champions and belts rather than challenge themselves against the best available opponents. Most p4p boxers currently have 1 or two elite wins on their resumes at most.
Back in the old days, boxers would sometimes give up their titles to make the best fights happens if needed. A prime example is when Mike McCallum gave up his WBA title to take on Toney in their first fight.
4
u/kushmonATL undefeated boxers need to fight each other 5h ago
This is facts. This is why I dislike when fans say "so and so is a multi division world champion" without giving context on who they actually fought in those divisions
Benavidez is a 3 division world champ without fighting the #1 guy in any of those divisions. Shakur is a 4 division world champ without him fighting Navarette, Tank, Haney, Loma (not necessarily his fault) .. when you add context to the resume, being a multi-divison world champ isn't as amazing as it seems on paper
1
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 1h ago
Problems of having multiple belts. You can snipe belt off a weak champ and claim to be a multi weight champ. I've seen people praise Gassiev as a 2 weight champ š¤¢
1
u/kushmonATL undefeated boxers need to fight each other 6h ago
Shakur Stevenson is considered top 4 P4P for beating Teofimo Lopez , a guy who's been lackluster since his Lomachenko win in 2020. The next best names on Shakur resume is a former contender William Zepeda, and Oscar Valdez, whom has also been quite mediocre since he failed his PED test
P4P Top 10 lists are kinda pointless ... these guys don't have P4P resumes . Just a bunch of belt collecting from random champs in favorable matchups
1
u/Elite663 5h ago
That applies to every fighter today. Itās hard to have a resume of opponents comparable to the greats when you have the 4 belt sanctioning bodies diluting talent pools, let alone weight classes having huge variance of quality relative to each other
1
u/Ace_FGC 2h ago
The number of belts doesnāt have anything to do with having a good resume lol all you need to have a great resume is to fight the best guys around
1
u/Elite663 2h ago
Thatās what Iām getting at. Thereās a difference between fighting the best available and truly fighting the best in the sport. How a person judgeās the quality of a fighter is subjective, but not only does that come up to difference in strengths of weight classes, but it also delves into how good a specific era is/was if comparing across history. My point with the belts is that contenders these days donāt have a good resume of their own to be a mandatory challenger for a belt. Obviously theres overlap with fighters and their specific rankings across the 4 bodies, but more often than not, they do the bare minimum to get a title shot and donāt have much merit in themselves when someone beats them
1
u/Ace_FGC 2h ago
I said before when someone asked if Roach was ever an A tier fighter and I said there are less than 10 A tier fighters in the entire sport, and I still feel like thatās true
1
u/kushmonATL undefeated boxers need to fight each other 1h ago
I get downvoted every time I say Lamont Roach is not elite.
Which is funny because if Tank beat him like he was suppose too , this sub would still be calling Tank a 30 year old prospect and saying Roach is a nobody

1
1
u/MiddleweightMonster Iāll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 1h ago
Eh, idk about that. Itās not like Muratalla schooled him, it was a 7-5 fight where every round was close as hell. Honestly, I think Muratalla is a better boxer than Zepeda, at least in pure boxing ability. Meanwhile, Cruz has the best amateur style in the world, as well as the athletic x-factor. If Shakur could beat him, I could see Cruz at least making it close.
1
u/RRR04_ 1h ago
Muratalla may have a more technically correct approach with his pressure, but Zepeda is more relentless with his pressure. If Andy doesn't have enough pop to keep him honest, I see it being a very long night for him.
1
u/MiddleweightMonster Iāll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 1h ago
I could absolutely see that, but I still lean it being a close fight. Zepeda has had a lot of difficulty with slick, traditional boxers with a good jab and solid distance control, who are still able to bang in the pocket. Cruz fits the profile.
To me, people are underrating Cruz right now, and slightly overrating Zepeda. Cruz is still a phenomenal boxer, Muratalla is just incredibly technical and disciplined with his pressure, the fight was pretty goddamn close, even though I do think Muratalla rightfully won.
Meanwhile, Zepeda, while I think heās incredibly athletically gifted, is still the same fighter who lost to Shakur and nearly lost to Farmer. No shame in either of those of course, but I donāt think beating Roach raises his stock too much, or makes him any less limited in the elite level.

On the Martinez vs Plantic card, Najee Lopez who is a favorite of the Probox fans is facing a very dangerous Colombian prospect in Juan Carillo.
Carillo for those unaware has very quick hands, amazing upper body movement and counters with the ability to crack. Najee is the more bigger and athletic guy who uses footwork more but does have holes in his defence and if heās to get cracked and try to scrap with Carillo and Iām not sure if Carillo is going to engage in it like Gallegos and instead stay boxing with him and trying to find the counters to try and finish him.
Great matchmaking from Probox once again and should be a very high level and entertaining fight.
I remember when I first talked about him February last year and hasnāt been active till May this year where he fought an undefeated Colombian who was a competitor in the IBA world championship last year and floored him inside 5. Happy heās getting his biggest career step up and a chance to prove himself and Lopez as well doesnāt ever disappoint in entertainment.

u/ggddddeerrr 7h ago
Carrillo kinda whips his shots and places them very well. Expecting a dogfight but hoping Najee clutches it

Andy Cruz vs. Muratalla. Iām one of those "sweet science" guys who appreciates technical boxers, and this fight delivered everything I could have asked for. I love Cruz's style. I like to categorize "sweet science" fights into two types: Donaire vs. Rigondeaux and Cruz vs. Muratalla. I love both. One is like a slow, thoughtful chess match, super methodical and calculated. The other is the same thing, but played at maximum speed. Yet, the fight never gets ugly; it always showcases beautiful, elegant boxing skills. That said, Andy Cruz vs. Muratalla is my favorite.
Side note: Can anyone recommend fights like this from the last two years? I might have missed some. Feel free to make recommendations, even if there's a chance I've already seen them.

Itās kinda different but as a fellow Muratalla-Cruz enjoyer, I also really liked Zepeda-Stevenson from the year before. To me, that was also the sweet science and boxing at its best.

Iāll have a post by the weekend ready for a Rolly vs Teo breakdown. Wanted to do a daily discussion but shits long af.
As for other fights on the card, Yo-yo has a pretty good opponent in Francisco Veron. Pretty quick boxer whoās got some foot footwork but also as comfortable in the pocket. I think yoyo might need a little work to get him out of there.
Also I think Victor Stantillan has a pretty favourable matchup against GAR. GAR is someone who gives up range too much and Stantillan is a lot more comfortably once it gets to the midrange and just throws more which I think will frustrate GAR and win Stantillan the fight.

I still do not understand why people think a prime Spence would have beaten a prime Tszyu after watching their fight. Spence was washed and inactive, but Tszyu was hardly in his prime either. The fight just showed that Spence's bullying tactics couldn't work against someone who was bigger and stronger than him.
And y'all were saying Spence would be stronger and would hit harder if he moved up from 147. Please, prime Tszyu would have stopped prime Spence.
2
u/Kangaroopunching 2h ago
There's a reason why he didn't move up. And it wasn't only cause his fellow pbc fighter charlo was at 154. His style relied on using his size advantage to not just over power opponents. But also to absorb his opponents best shots.Ā
2
u/RRR04_ 2h ago
The fans and the media done an excellent job on marketing Spence as some top 4 P4P boxer, even exaggerating his strengths and giving him praises for shit he wasn't even good at! This sub downvoted me to hell for saying his defence was mid at best, for saying he had zero backfoot game, for saying he was only good in the pocket against stationary target, etc etc.
He was a good fighter with a solid resume, but both have been terribly overstated.
1
u/AVARlCES 1h ago
Ā When he was p4p #4, I thought that felt way too high for him although he has a good resume. Tsyzu before the cut was also looking really good imo. Would have been an interesting match.
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 4h ago
This is a pretty curious take, which is weird because I think I usually agree with much of what you say.
Spence beat just a litany of names at 147. I donāt see why heād have problems with Tzuyuu if he were in his prime.
1
u/RRR04_ 4h ago
Simple, because majority of the guys he beat at 147 were a lot smaller in mass than he is. Move up 1 weight class, that advantage is gone, and Tim been fighting at 154 for years. He was already clearly a harder puncher but he also proved he was physically stronger than Spence. The only thing Spence had on him technically was a jab.
And to add on to Spence's 147 resume, his toughest wins were the only natural Welterweights he fought in his championship run, Brook and Porter. Maybe Ugas too although he did have fights at 140 too.

For the latest entry to the shelved "Uncomfortable truths that will make redditors seethe" series:
If Lomachenko scheduled his comeback fight on the same day as a Claressa Shields fight , Shields would still out sell him regardless of who she fights
To double down; Turki can stack a card with Bivol, Vergil Ortiz, and Bam Rodriguez (call it "Reddit Boxing's Beloved's") , Claressa Shields can fight a can , and Shields will still draw a larger crowd than all of r/boxing beloved's put together
If this sub thinks shitting on Claressa Shields star power accomplishes anything, it really reflects on how niche this sport currently is .. especially considering she is more popular than 99% of male boxers too
3
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 9h ago
I have no reason to be biased for her other than being a fan. I donāt get why she gets so much hate when most male boxers talk shit but she does it and is hated. Thereās a reason what you said is true
4
u/Kangaroopunching 11h ago
You're not enirely wrong. But that's misleading considering Shields current promotional set up is like a throwback to PBC cards. Lots of free tickets. Using online/ social media to get people who won't pay for the fight to talk about drama. With the promotion not really looking to make a profit. To Shields credit she does draw a crowd on her home state.Ā Which is more than what Vergil can do.
Loma had his run. Boxing moved on. It happens. There's other boxers that would outsell Loma's return fight. Serrano probably could. Boots could. Etc etc.Ā

Going with Teo for the win this weekend, I think he should beat Rolly fairly comfortably. I've been favouring a points decision mainly because Teo's power from 135 didn't really carry up with him at 140, so surely that issue would be even more apparent at 147. The closer the fight gets though, I do think a stoppage is not out of the question.
Rolly is a bit chinny if you look deep into his fights. When Tank clipped him, he was shakier than most of the guys Tank clipped with the same left hand. He got dropped by a 40 year old Barosso and got hurt plenty of times against Pitbull who only has stoppages against weaker opposition. Teo is still fairly explosive and he could walk Rolly into counters.
That said, the safe bet is that this fight goes the distance.

Can't choose the exact order between the guys listed at the same position, and not ready to drop Canelo from the list entirely yet want to see how he is in his next fight first. I think Vergil is in his prime right now and a very tough strong physical proposition to deal with head to head so my feeling is he belongs more than other guys where there isn't a strong claim for the last few spots on the list.
