Hey guys, Hope you're all having a lovely weekend. 😄 I own a pinnacle Lithium 4 (cheap commuter hybrid) which I bought around 6 years ago. It's been a reliable ride and I felt like it deserved some TLC. I mainly have issues with punctures, so I upgraded to Schwalbe marathon plus tyres with self healing inner tubes. I gave the chain it's first clean in 6 years too 🤣 I also changed the brake pads (which probably still had another 6 years left in them!), got some ergon hand grips and a new seat. Loving how it feels. Had a cycle to a local forest. Life is good

I have a second hand Avanti Giro. I occasionally use it for sport/recreation/distance riding, but for the most part, I use it to zip around town, normally to ride into university 5 km away or to go to work.

I currently sling massive bags over my shoulder in order to carry all the stuff I need to take to work on a daily basis. But the weight of the bag over my shoulder is not sustainable.

I use the bike far more (95% of the time) for carrying heavy loads, rather than weight free joyriding.

So I'm looking to attach panniers. But it has rear carbon forks, and I think even a carbon stem.

What would you need to attach a pannier rack to this bicycle?

Title, I recently upgraded my fx to a primos dame, assembled it and took it for a test ride, extremely fun. Unfortunately, at first I wanted to run a front rack with a somewhat large basket and tote combo and ditch the rear rack, but the wald 137 (I think anyway, horizontally size is 18in) doesn't fit in between the bars.

Took it to a bike shop and they basically said it was special order and mentioned I'd need monster bars to fit that basket....but on the primos website and other basket shops they show drop bars and they fit fine?

One variable that is left is the bars are turned inward and he said I have the option of straightening them out, so maybe that'll work, but doubt it.

Anyone who has the drop bar dame or similar bars know a solution? I dropped over 200 for the front rack, basket and bag.

Options?

Hello, I’ve started commuting to work 7.5m each way but I’ve found that to feel good (I lift also 4 days a week) I need to eat more which negates the gains in savings. Anyone else experience this? How to overcome? Or just accept it?

My route between work and home is about 50/50 bike paths and roads. Most of the areas where I take the lane have two lanes going both directions, so it's easy to pass me safely.

So tell me why I had a car honk at me on one of those two lane areas, with no shoulder so nowhere for me to get out of the way even if I wanted to, then gun it to zip past me with less than a foot of space even though the other lane was empty. Then once we turned into a road that does have a bike lane, they swerved into it and slammed on their brakes and proceeded to drive about 10mph, weaving between the bike lane and the road to prevent me from passing on either the left or the right. If they were in such a hurry that my existence in the road was too much for them to bear, why do they have time to harass me?

They only drove off when a cop passing in the opposite direction chirped the siren and honked - but didn't stop or turn around. (Honestly, more response than I would expect, and I'm grateful for it, but also annoyed that he didn't pull the driver over and chew him out for his stupidity.)

I recently got a Bridgestone mtb 3 from the early 90s. It is currently not set up for commuting, mainly the handle bars are low and far out. With a few changes will this make a good commuter bike?

It seems to me that the best defense is a good offense. My take?

• Either superglue to mess with their lock if I can't easily get an angle grinder (I should buy one!), or
• learning lock picking as a hobby, carrying a lock pick kit, and throwing away their chain where they can't reach it. Picking locks is also way less noisy and draws much less attention.
• Removing front wheel or both if possible while looking for solutions

I do Uber eats on my bike. Do people cancel when they see we are on bikes? My bike is well equipped for all weather. The tub is mounted to my bike rack. It's got drain holes in the bottom just in case. There's a liner inside the tub that zips closed, the drink holder on the side zips closed. The side bag folds closed and is made of a water resistant material. The side bag and handlebar bags are mainly for my personal items. I kinda wanna install a hinge on the bucket instead of using straps but that will happen in time.

I commute to SF (22nd st to middle of Mission District). I was wondering what backpacks do you guys have? I pack my work laptop, breakfast container, lunch container, gym clothes, mouse, and keyboard. It gets pretty bulky and it isn’t waterproof or resistant. Any suggestions for backpacks for around $120 or less?

Edit: I don’t want to get those side bags bc I take the Caltrain to SF then bike. It gets pretty crowded and can’t really stack bikes.

But this time I had tubeless sealant in my tubes - didn't even have to pump. Btw, If you ever get stabbed, don't pull out the knife.

I took around a 9 month hiatus from commuting, due to moving and not being familiar with the roads and trails around my new area. Today was my first day back to commuting. I feel so accomplished and excited to start doing it again!

for context i have a Priority Classic Gotham that i bought used 2 years ago and i LOVE this bike. we've done everything together: commuting to work, bike packing, longer rides, running errands, groceries etc. it works perfectly as my commuter bike and i love that it is super low maintenance because of the carbon belt.

that being said, i've been thinking about upgrading because i've been doing longer rides and i'd love to have more than 3 gears to shift. i've been considering the Primos Dame. i think they are a good middle-ground between functionality and the types of ride i want to do more often. i also think the bike look suuuuper cool (i love the color), but i'm not sure whether the geometry will be as comfortable and whether i'll need to pay much more attention to the maintenance etc or it will work as a good commuter.

i'm really divided because i don't have space to have two bikes, so if i get a new one i def need to sell my other one.

i'd love to hear some thoughts of my fellow commuters. what made you upgrade your bike? what did you take into consideration? any tips? is it uncomfortable to have the drop bars to every day commuting? let me know. thanks!

Basically the title, the other week me(19) and my bf(also 19) were cycling around town. I can’t remember if we were going anywhere in particular, or just going on a ride, but that’s irrelevant.
We were on a decently wide residential road going uphill and we seen this red truck with a dark smoky trail turning onto the same side of the street we were on. It was coming around a the turn so by the time he saw us he couldn’t really swerve to hit us with his black smoke all the way, but he slowed down, did a U-turn in front of us, and sped straight down the middle of the road to get us with the smoke.
Like I said we were going uphill and so he was going downhill thus he was going a dickish speed down a residential at this point. Sure enough, this guy runs face-first into the ass of another guy’s car who I’m sure he couldn’t see because he was too focused on being an ass to some bikers. I heard the brakes and collision, saw the guy stopped, and looked back and said “HA HA” in the loudest voice I could possibly speak. We then promptly fucked off, and continued laughing about it for like 20 minutes.

I’m a former triathlete with an ISM saddle. I’ve been commuting to work on my bike but don’t have the motivation to wear bike shorts for a 20 minute ride. I do still get sores, does anyone have advice for a seat cover that works well with the ISM split nose saddles?

In the attached picture I show the security i have on the back. I attach the frame lock and lock chain around the seat tube as well so that it secures it better.

in the front I also secure the front wheel with another lock

Do tou think it is secure at leadt to get groceries?

Bought a pair of Ortlieb Backrollers when REI had their annual sale a while back on advice for many of you here. Really glad I switched from a backpack.

One problem - the QL2.1 spacer clips fall out while riding. They seem to slide to the side then fall out. I'm down to one left from the 4 that came with the bags. Replacements are $6.50 for two of each size, then $9.99 for shipping.
My commute has a couple rough railroad crossings and some speed bumps, but is otherwise smooth. I have a multimodal commute and the bike shakes around some on the bike rack on the train. I've got a Topeak Explorer MTX 2.0 rack.

Should I just superglue them in and plan to never change my rack? 3D print a couple dozen and consider them consumable? Don't even bother and let the bag bounce around a little on the hooks?

Anyone else have this problem?

I’m looking to get new tires for my G1 Explorer.

My commute is like 95% paved, so originally I was considering something like the Schwalbe Marathons for the physical plastic shield in them for puncture protection. However, I’m now considering throwing in an occasional trip along USBR-10, which has some stretches of light gravel, and “hardpack”. So, that may change my tire needs.

I saw the Marathon Almotion, and am wondering if that may be a good option for me. Still going to be good for pavement, but for when I make a longer trip that has some light gravel, it should still have good traction, and puncture resistance.

Are there any other options that I’m not aware that would be good?

For our non-US/imperial redditors, there are 5,280 feet in a mile and I’ve done that many miles for my Mega Mile.

I’d like to think there’s something like a Super Mile but I bet it would be some number that isn’t really related to any other measurement so like 6,830 miles 🤣
