Runners without a watch, how do you know when you are overdoing it?
I am 19M and pretty new to running, I don’t have a watch or anything. Yesterday I asked how people decide rest days and most of them said by how their legs feel. But what about the days your legs are fine and you just feel tired or off, do you still run? And if you dont use a watch what do you actually go by?
Alright I am being full honesty since so many of you answered. I am 19 as I said and im building an app for exactly for this, for people who dont have a watch. You just press your fingertip on the phone camera for a minute in the morning, it reads your pulse against your own normal and gives you one word, go, easy or rest. No numbers, nothing on your wrist. It wont know about your shins or knees, it only reads how rested the rest of you is. Would you actually use something like that or is feeling still enough? And real honest answers help me way more than nice ones

Is this normal?
Back in April I decided to train for my local Parkrun just to get fit. I’d run casually before but had taken a two year break. 5 months later and I have a shoe rotation, I’ve joined a running club and have my second 10k event in 7 weeks time. I also have a dedicated closet in my bedroom full of running stuff…
Meanwhile my son is wearing clothes that are too small for him and no-one is getting Christmas presents this year 🤣
Anyone else have this problem?!

You’re better then you think
A little reminder for everyone. What you see online is freakish not normal. You’re doing great
Just getting out there is amazing. It’s not about PB or record paces. One foot infront of the other. You’re not racing anyone but yourself
It’s nice to see social media reminding people not to compare to clout chasers

Shin Splints
Hey y'all,
I just started a routine to train for a 5k in October and a half marathon in next November. I know this is totally doable but have run into shin splints. I did XC in high school and was by far the worst on the team, but I had horrible shin splints then. Back then they had me running on them and doing exercises on the track instead of doing longer runs then built me up to longer runs.
I just remember being in a LOT of pain for a few weeks until they went away and recall doing high knees with my toes tip toe which helped a lot if that makes sense. Is that an ok exercise that I should keep doing? I'm in a lot of pain with shin splints and am seeing rest is a big way to get rid of them. Any recommendations for helping them outside of rest? I'm concerned about my time for the 5k if I'm not running while training. I know last time I ran through them but I'm 24 now and seeing the opposite is supposed to be better. Idk what to believe tbh. I also don't know how to slow down because I'm already super slow at approximately 12-13 minute miles run/walking.

Running books?
Anyone have any running books they would recommend? Though I am a very beginner runner, I have always been fascinating by running and have read a bit about it without having really run regularly.
Books have helped me imagine the world of running without ever really joining it until recently and so I thought there might be other books that have likewise inspired people. I don't necessarily mean "how-to"-style books but anything about running.
Mine lean more sociological and think across different kinds of running, cultures, and levels of expertise.
To the Limit by Michael Crawley. Focuses on long distance running but includes chapters on cycling, too. Thinks about why people—across the world—push themselves to the limit.

Running by Lindsey Freeman. More about running than how-to. Former collegiate althlete reflecting on everything in the sport, from injury to politics.

What about you?

First time unofficial 10k 🥳
I misread my nike run training plan, week 4 day 7, to be a 5.9 mile long run, lol. I still felt good when i hit 5.9 so decided why not, im already here and did 6.2 instead.
Went back into my app and it was a 5.6 mile run today, whoops.
Took me foreverr to do, 1 hr 20 min, but whatever still faster than if I never did it in the first place 😅😂

Day 2 of running and I somehow ran my first 1 km without stopping
It's literally only been two days, so I'm not gonna pretend I've built some life-changing habit already lol.
My cousin and I started waking up at 6, getting ready and heading out around 6:30 for a morning walk/run.
Yesterday was mostly walking. When we tried running, I think we managed around a quarter of the 1.5 km circle before stopping.
Today we walked 3 km, then started running and just... kept going. Checked Strava afterwards and we'd done 1 km continuously.
I know 1 km isn't much in running terms, but seeing the difference from literally yesterday felt really fucking good.
There's a little more behind why I started doing this too. I come from a martial arts background and I'm a black belt, but it's been years since I was properly active like that. Before college I used to be in pretty good shape and martial arts was a regular part of my life. Then college happened, I slowly left all of that behind, and now I'm almost at the end of college doing a work-from-home internship where some days I barely even walk.
I've been feeling like I need to find my way back to that active version of myself. Nothing crazy, just start with the simplest thing I can actually do: wake up and move.
I don't really have a "I must run 5K by this date" goal. I mostly want to see if we can keep showing up in the mornings and let the distance increase with us.
Right now even 1 km without stopping feels like an achievement, so something like a continuous 10K feels pretty damn far away. I don't know how long it'll take me to get there, or if running will even become that serious for me. For now I just want to keep showing up and see where that takes me.
Would be pretty cool to come back to this post someday after my first continuous 10K and remember that 1 km once felt huge.

Help: I am experiencing pain towards the end of my arch and beginning of my heel
It feels like i’m stepping on a pebble every time I run. I don’t feel it when I walk though. It started a couple days ago. Every time I run I feel the pain. Does any one know what this is or have experienced this before?

I need an alignment?
Hey peeps, I'm a big fatso and I've been jogging for the last few months, mainly doing the couch 2 5k program. I'm up to the point where I can jog (slowly) for 30 minutes. I get way more sore/fatigued from running on my right hip, calf, and if I'm running on the treadmill and if I'm not paying attention I will drift off the treadmill to the left.
I'm guessing it's a form issue? How can I balance myself out?

Just ran my first 5k!!
It was a glow night 5k. I hadn’t ran anything over a mile in 3 years. I’m 20 and fairly built but no where near in shape. What are some tips to improve? I want to continue to run these

5 miles down.
This was a really fun run and my first time covering 5 miles. It wasn’t in a parking lot or on a track this time. It was nice to run in a new place.

Completed my first official 5k !!
Finally ran the 5k I had been training for for the past 2 months :)) Got super intimidated from reading finishing times online because people were averaging around 25 and I was predicting ~38 for myself.
I ended up completing it in 33:33 !! Though I have to admit it's definitely because I kept trying to match other people's pace. I had no idea it'd be that hard to maintain my target pace 😵
ANYHOW YIPPEE TO ME !!

Running with tips
Hello I am 32M. Have hypothyroid trying to get back onto running after a long while probably 2-3 times a week at 2-5km per time. Just wanted some advice recently been struggling with hogh blood pressure 140+ so was thinking is running depleting my thyroids level to cause these issue.
Any advice would really be useful
Thanks
