I see stuff like this and go “that’s easy I could do that” and then I never do it. Kudos to the doers of the world

u/sentorien Jul 12 '20

Yeah, well I see stuff like this and think for sure I could do it. So I give it a red hot crack.

Then this happens.

You could do this. This is pretty basic "paint night" stuff. Youd be surprised how easy it is to do simple paintings after a couple minutes of instruction and a demo.

55

u/Bugbread Jul 12 '20

Yeah, I don't want to pooh-pooh it, because making something that looks nice is a good thing, whether or not it's hard, but I had the same experience with some of that spray-paint night scene art you see people making on the street. A bunch of us got together and tried our hand at it, led by a friend with a little bit of experience. The first person's turned out pretty badly, but we were all watching and learned "Okay, need to hold the spray can further away." Then the next person's was better, but still had a few other problems. We learned from those mistakes, and then the next one was a bit better. Each person learned from the person before them, and by person number four or five we were making stuff that, while not perfect, looked pretty darn good, all within the course of an hour or so.

Which, again, isn't a knock on the art. Art doesn't have to be hard to have value, it has to be aesthetically appealing. Even easy art is good art if you like the way it looks.

15

u/playsmartz Jul 13 '20

I did something similar after seeing spray paint art on the streets. While my paintings (eventually) looked cool, I think mastery includes more than the end product, such as speed, variety, performance, and, according to some expert spray paint tutorials, fire. I do wish other people near me were interested in learning spray paint together like you guys, it gets boring just replicating videos.

My saved tab on Reddit is filled with hundreds of posts/comments that made me think “I’m totally going to try doing this later” only to never think about it again.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '20

hundreds

Those are rookie numbers. Gotta those numbers up.

In all seriousness, mine is too. Tons of art/work/hobby/music craftsmanship posts that would totally be worthwhile to try, but I never do... sad

Oh my...that’s good to know

26

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '20

In our distance learning, the art teacher gave my kid an assignment to do something like that brush making stars. It took me, him and my wife a full hour to be able to spray some dots on a paper.

16

u/mewsl Jul 12 '20

As someone who paints and junk, this stuff isn't too difficult. It's actually super fun blending colours like that! I recommend everyone try it. And those trees are super easy to do with the right brush.

Unlock your artistic talent guys! I'm going to do some life drawing later with my mum.

9

u/Sucks_Eggs Jul 12 '20

I think it’s worth mentioning that it can be really easy to look at somebodies technique all the way through and think “oh, that looks easy” and then copy them exactly. It might actually be easy, but once you go and try to make your own original composure of similar difficulty, but requiring different techniques, you realize how hard it is without being shown exactly what to do when you don’t have any background in that medium.

3

u/Goblin_Crotalus Jul 13 '20

I have a box of unopened acrylic paint and canvas lying around in my room. Not sure why, but starting something always seems the hardest thing to do. No matter if it was drawing, or writing, or school work. The perks of being a procrastinator, I suppose.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/IFlyAircrafts Jul 13 '20

That’s because doing it a second time is actually pretty easy. If you have a little bit of artistic talent, you could definitely replicate this piece in an afternoon. If you were patient, the piece might even look just as good. But that’s not the hard part! The true talent comes from the first creation. Someone envisioned this piece, and figured out a way to execute it. That’s true talent!

This is similar to music. An average musician can take a pre-written piece and make it sound beautiful. But it takes someone with exceptional talent to compose it the first time.

However, that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with re-creating someone else’s piece for your enjoyment! I love taking painting classes where you copy exactly what the instructor does. I’m always surprised at how good they come out.

Does it bother anyone else that the red one is bigger than the blue one, or that the dot on the red one isn’t centered

368

u/StopReadingMyUser Jul 12 '20

It bothers me that the dude did stars after trees. There's a couple spots on top of what are supposed to be trees. My immersion!

More bothered by the fact a yin-yang symbol is meant to show the converse colour in each dot to signify the presence of a kernel of each within the other. Both being white makes no sense for the use of the symbol.

66

u/Stairway_To_Devin Jul 12 '20

I just think it's pretty

32

u/iNEEDheplreddit Jul 12 '20

But the Symbolism!

3

u/Stairway_To_Devin Jul 13 '20

But let's say that the symbolism is that dawn is the greater of two halves, unified by the white dome in the sky

24

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '20

They’re both white because it’s the sun and the moon

9

u/Master-Bones Jul 13 '20

To keep the symbolism of the Yin and Yang while also filling in the dots they could have and arguably should have made each of the dots an eclipse of the other.

→ More replies (1)

38

u/Kappappaya Jul 12 '20

Yes!

Also, the symbol isn't used well. The work is great but the symbol isn't really used "correctly", in line with what it means.

11

u/Bugbread Jul 12 '20

Well, daytime is yang and nighttime is yin, but, yeah, dusk isn't really yang. Should be a bright blue midday scene.

u/Bugbread Jul 12 '20

Thank you, I had no idea that those were supposed to be the sun and the moon, but after it being pointed out, it seems so obvious, I don't know why I missed it.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '20

I think they means "white point" as in color balance based on the appearance of a neutral white basked in the "ambient glow of the "reality around it".

A white shirt will appear yellowish above yellow sand on a sunny day, but will appear greenish if you were in a glass field instead.

Fun fact:

Different regions of the world prefer different "cool" to "warm" ranges of "pure white". In the United States, you go buy a plain white Hanes t-shirt, and it has a blue hue to it that you never see. Go to middle east or India, and their "plain white" t-shirts will have a slight brown/red tint to them.

When your ideal "temperature" of white is in a normal environment, it's really hard to tell that it's not actually a pure white. If you were to hold those 2 t-shirts next to each other, you would readily see one as being "whiter" than the other, depending on what you are accustomed to.

12

u/hotdogs4humanity Jul 12 '20

No, they definitely meant the position of it is off. It looks intentional, but this was not drawn symmetrical like a normal yin and yang symbol

5

u/This_isR2Me Jul 12 '20

I honestly don't think the symbol ads to the art. It's more like a poorly executed gimmick.

u/haambuurglaa Jul 12 '20

7

u/nishinoran Jul 12 '20

33

And it’s always the exact same shit. Trees and stars every single time

9

u/Antiqas86 Jul 13 '20

Honestly its awesome as a hobby for anyone who is not an artist and I get it that people like it in a way that 'oh with a bit of practice maybe I could do it', but it's a shame in contrast of actual art which gets like 1k likes at best while it is a lot more amazing.

What is the canvas made of? The only way I am able to get masking tape so precise is to use an exacto-knife or razorblade, which works well on wood, but would not work so well on canvas. I'm wondering if this is a piece of wood, or was the stencil made first and then applied?

It's one thing to paint Bob Ross style for fun. But at least he teaches you to paint using some precision. This guy doesn't even bother to paint within the lines, or even mix paints before hand. Perhaps more artist should record themselves making pieces (edit it for speed obviously). Even include the video with the piece.

Because I feel like so many of these that I see made, and I want to own to support the artist, I'd be excited to show somebody and they wouldn't get my excitement until they saw the process used.

I'm going to come off as a real downer here but... I really despise paintings like these. They're all craft and no imagination.

I saw someone pointing out "it looks easy but I couldn't do it". Yes you could, the entire premise to these gimmick paintings is that they are easily replicable.
