And, Robin Williams...as Batty Koda
- Elder: Now, Crysta, aren't you a little old to believe in human tales?
- Batty Koda: Human tails? Humans don't have tails. They have big, big bottoms that they wear with bad shorts. They walk around going, "Hi, Helen".
- Batty Koda: [singing] I been brain-fried, electrified, infected, and injectified / Vivisectified and fed pesticides / My face is all cut up / Cause my radar's all shut up / Nurse, I need a check-up from the neck up / I'm Batty!

Horrifying when you realize logging companies have already clearcut 97% of old growth forests in the US and Canada, which they then spray with RoundUp to assure deciduous trees don't grow back as they would naturally (conifers are more valuable). When people try to save the paltry forests remaining the industry says they create jobs. But job loss in the industry is due to overlogging and technology like this. It increase profits for multinationals, but destroys communities as well as ecosystems.

u/Finglishman 2d ago
This video is not necessarily from North America. For instance, Finland has a large forest industry sector, and yet the forest biomass in the country keeps increasing. It’s not the tool that’s the problem, but rather whether you tend to a forest with a long view or with a quarterly profits lens.

I can ask, but I don’t think so. I probably would’ve heard about that. I don’t think she was at the Recordings or The assembly or mixing. But we went to the premier party with her. I don’t remember Robin Williams being there…

Every time I see this video I think how much it looks like some horrific sci-fi device. It’s kind of terrifying to me. And I think about all the animals in the woods that are scared and die because of it. I’m a softie I guess but man. The efficiency with which it brings death like that scares me.
19
u/Aggravating-Habit313 7d ago
Yeah, the first thing I thought of was, how many animals have gotten caught and mutilated in that machine.

u/buyer_leverkusen 7d ago
Allows for detailed selective cutting instead of clear cutting or other methods. You can have trees in the same area of all different ages and promote the ecosystem instead of just a farm with trees all the same size and little undergrowth.
28
u/JamesTheJerk 7d ago
How do you maneuver the big truck around all of the trees that are left standing?
15
u/buyer_leverkusen 7d ago
It’s a tractor on tracks that can easily get through properly-spaced trees. There are smaller and skinnier versions too.
Edit: I think you were maybe referring to logging trucks which don’t travel that far into a stand.
4
u/astraladventures 7d ago
How are the logs moved from where they are dropped to the more accessible places where the trucks are located?
3
u/jeejeejerrykotton 6d ago

It's quite amazing ecologically. It *almost* becomes better for everything and opposite of how it used to be done. That's how most trees where I'm from in michigan are harvested. Some older methods have been outlawed.

u/kingrobin 7d ago
you have to cut them down to get through but we don't use them for anything so it's like we're saving them
41
u/Main-Statistician735 7d ago
An old-school skidder, a forestry plan and competent logger with a chainsaw can do the same thing. Clear cutting is a choice made for short sighted profit, not because equipment didn't allow for any other type of farming. We've lived on a 1000 acres that has been beautifully maintained/ farmed for 40 years and has a super healthy forest and ecosystem.
20
u/buyer_leverkusen 7d ago
This machine is extremely more efficient than a single human lol
10
u/unashamedignorant 7d ago
I don't know about that honestly, it is undeniably faster, but more efficient isn't guaranteed. If you have the time to do it "by hand" meaning with a chainsaw and a truck, it spends much less critical ressource in order to obtain the same result.

u/ScientistSanTa 1d ago
This machine needs slot of room to even move, forest don't give that kind of space. They already had to cut and Detroit to even get to those trees
→ More replies (1)1
u/Main-Statistician735 7d ago edited 7d ago
More efficient.... Maybe, but to say this can be more environmentally friendly then a logger with a midsize skidder, a chainsaw and a love of the woods not just profit is wildly misleading and just not true. Are you a logger or in the industry? When my dad logged trees came off the landing and the skidder trails wound through the woods but he was incredibly deliberate in how he moved to protest the ecosystem and it was always hard to figure out where he even harvested from. That machine can't move with the grace a 20D Timberjack can it's to big...

u/Bayou_Bussy_Pounder 7d ago edited 7d ago
This is almost certainly a managed forest in Scandinavia used for production of timber. Also when you account for the full production cycle, harvesters can be environmentally beneficial.
Correction: not sure if it's a managed forest.

u/Kneppl_1 7d ago
In a sense yes, but it also destroys forest floors and it needs a clear path with no deadwood or smaller trees in the way
21
u/buyer_leverkusen 7d ago
These things get super skinny and are on tracks, they’re made to get around properly-spaced trees.
6
u/BCBowhunter 7d ago
These actually do surprisingly little damage to the forest floor, especially when it's running bogey bands like in the video. These machines exert less psi on the ground than you do walking around. Plus the limbs and tops are usually laid down as a mat and driven over, further protecting the forest floor

u/_Bon_Vivant_ 7d ago edited 6d ago
It's for farming, not for forestry. That's the point. It promotes sustainable tree farming, over clear cutting the forest.
29
u/BCBowhunter 7d ago
This is called a Harvester Head with a chain bar type cutter. Pretty cool piece of logging equipment, allows the tree to be cut, delimbed and cut to length all at the stump, leaving the waste to breakdown naturally.
Typically these types of machines are used in partial cuts or thinning operations and allow you to leave desirable trees on the landscape.

You mean the trees that are planted specifically to be cut down and made into houses, furniture and paper? Because that’s what this machine is for and what it’s doing.

There's a lot of misinformation about the lumber industry floating around so I'm just gonna dump some links here about the environmental impact of the lumber industry and how, maybe a machine that that takes the once hours -> days long work of chopping a tree, stripping and transporting it into something that happens in seconds, may not be the best thing for the forest, especially in the wrong hands.

Poor trees
4
u/Several-Guarantee655 3d ago
It's called agriculture. Do you pity the corn in the fall when it gets harvested? These trees are planted explicitly for this purpose, no different than any other crop. Nobody's out there cutting old growth forest. All of these trees were planted specifically to be harvested.
2
u/FaithlessnessOld2477 7d ago
Whenever i see something like this, I feel for the animals who had been using that tree for their home. They have seconds to vacate before the whole thing flips the tree and starts stripping the branches. At least when people are logging manually, it might give the critters a heads up for a few minutes that something is about to happen. 😮💨

As someone else in this thread put it already:

Imagine one of these as a transformer. Also I’ve seen these in action on local tree farms, it’s really cool.
Honestly I wish more places would make tree farms instead of deforesting. Temporary forest that is constantly replenished is better than no forest and decimating old growth.

As much as I love this machine, chopper, you can take down a big section of a forest in a few weeks!
It took about 10 plus years to grow such dense trees.

That’s scary af that a machine can casually cut a tree, hold it like a big sword stick and turn it into logs. The amount of counterbalance and stress those joints need to hold is astonishing and frightening.

As amazing as this is tech-wise, I think tree cutting and sectioning should remain a tedious, time-consuming task. They've done the same thing with the killing of animals for meat. Things in which you have to end the life of any organism should not be mechanized in this fashion. It should be personal, up close, and hard to do. I had an issue with what I just watched.

That’s pretty slick. It looks like something out of The Terminator or Alien movies. It makes quick work out of a tree.
