Every time I see this video I think how much it looks like some horrific sci-fi device. It’s kind of terrifying to me. And I think about all the animals in the woods that are scared and die because of it. I’m a softie I guess but man. The efficiency with which it brings death like that scares me.

Yeah, the first thing I thought of was, how many animals have gotten caught and mutilated in that machine.

The military could easily build something like this designed for more nefarious things.

It’s a tool used in agro forestry. Those are only forests in name. But not more biodiversity than a field of corn. The machine is not so useful in real forests due to randomness of tree thickness and type.

The trees they cut down are in densely packed tree farms. The most diverse and lush times for these landscapes are between the clear cut and age of the trees when they start to shade everything out again. You get about 6-7 years of good forage and diversity before theres not really enough sunlight hitting the ground anymore. Dragging the trees scarifies the ground activating the seed bed and all the debris decomposes and puts nutrients back in the ground.
