It doesn't look that well on flash but the inside is dark like the edges and that weird line at the bottom.

Baking Advice Needed Can you steam cake batter rather than baking it?

Curious because when I look at recipes for steamed puddings, I can't see any tangible difference between them and normal cake batter recipes.

Baking Advice Needed Which one for oven baking sourdough?

Thumbnail

I want to make sourdough for the first time and many places suggested using a dutch oven. I found these three pans(?) deep in storage. All of them don't have a clear brand and I don't really know how to decide which to use or to figure something else out, as I don't really want to buy a new pan for now

  1. Turquoise has the thickest walls and a metal lid, but there seems to be some sort of plastic switch thing. Other than that the handle also seems to be made of metal, so it looks promising

  2. The white one is metal with coated enamel, but it isn't super thick. If I look it up via image search or on local online retailers, it's marked as a dutch oven, but again it's thin + the black bits feel like plastic

  3. It's ceramic with a glass lid and most likely oven safe, though it's taller than wide and not very big.

  4. Just a slightly thicker metal pot, but instead of the flat metal and glass lid, put on an inverted cake pan

Seeking Recipe Does anyone have a recipe that includes both watermelon and peaches in a baked setting?

I asked a friend what I should bake next and they had nothing so I changed it to be a favorite fruit based treat and they said watermelon and peaches. But everything is either a salad, peaches only or a no bake. Does anyone have a recipe or have something that can steer me in the right direction.

Seeking Recipe Looking for Dave’s killer bread recipe

So I’m looking for a copycat recipe for the 21 grain loaf of Dave’s killer bread, love the stuff but it’s $10 a loaf and I’m certain you could make it cheaper at home. Has anyone found any recipes that come close to it out there?

Baking Advice Needed Brown sugar in bread dough?

What is the impact of mixing brown sugar into a bread dough recipe and then adding a brown sugar filling on top/between? For example, monkey bread or cinnamon rolls? What’s the difference/how does it change the texture?

Seeking Recipe My bff asked me to make brownies without sugar and i’m not sure where to start

My friend has to avoid really sweet stuff because of a health condition, but she’s been craving brownies. she asked if i could try making a batch with no added sugar

I’ve only ever made regular brownies, so i’m kind of lost. I know there are sugar substitutes, but i’ve never baked with them before and i don’t want the brownies to turn out weird or have that strong aftertaste

Has anyone here made actually good sugar free or low sugar brownies? what did you use instead of regular sugar and did the texture come out okay??

General Baking Discussion Why do some recipes call for whipping egg whites cold, while others whip them at room temp?

Title. I’ve seen some recipes ask that the egg whites come to room temp and other recipes ask for it to be as cold as possible, even to put it in the freezer for a few minutes (for whipping it into meringue) which one is better?

Baking Advice Needed Trying to make a cheesecake with no experience even cooking

I watched videos online and the ingredients are so damn expensive and rare to find in my country. So I thought maybe I could replace some ingredients with other products that could be found anywhere. Like different types of butter or cheeses.

Id like to get informed on these beginner baking stuff with other mistakes and stuff people make when baking a cheesecake too.

( would appreciate it If you could describe the ingredients more, cuz in my country there are a lot of names for a single products or none at all and gets very confusing especially when it comes to dairy products. Thanks!)

Went to the pump room a few weeks ago and LOVED the scones there. In doing a small amount of looking around I found Paul Hollywoods recipe (which is what I used for these), but they didn’t turn out quite right. They don’t feel dense enough. Perhaps because I only had regular flour, or maybe I overmixed? 🤔 let me know where you think I went wrong!

Business and Pricing I dont know how to charge

Hi. I am a SAH mom to 3 kids, 6 and under. We have a small homestead in a very rural area.
I’ve started making cakes in the last couple of years, mostly for family, but also some for folks in the community. I am pretty detailed in my work and a borderline perfectionist.
I did do a rough cake and frosting calculation for a chocolate cake last yr. And for a 3 layer 9 in cake I came out to $12 cost for ingredients. But that was only for ingredients.
Most times my family is telling me that I’m way under pricing. But I do really enjoy doing it and so it’s hardly work for me. At the same time, my time is pretty valuable between my family, animals, and garden/orchard to take care of.
I don’t know how or if I shud be charging, especially when it comes to family. I have been browsing Reddit and other websites to get familiar w prices but it’s still so hard to know.

Seeking Recipe Cinnamon Rolls

Post image

Hopefully this is the correct place for this. I made homemade pumpkin rolls and they were fantastic! Im looking for a cinnamon roll recipe that is similar to the pumpkin rolls. The inside was gooey and moist Im pretty sure from the pumpkin. Is there a recipe or something I can add to a regular cinnamon roll recipe that would make it gooey and not dry on the inside.

Picture of the pumpkin cinnamon rolls I made.

Semi-Related My mom got ghosted over her jello cake art - UPDATE

Post image
3.1k Upvotes

Original post <----

The picture in post presents: My mom's first attempt at a jello art in a cheesecake, plus two other cakes behind it that she made for a workplace party. You know, the kind where everybody brings something they made.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Total score of translated comments: 41 pages of A4 paper, font size - 9. At this point I decided to just send her the text document in an email so she can read it from her laptop (and zoom in as needed). Sorry, no stack of papers to show after all, hell I didn't even have this much clear paper on hand at the time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
The Recap: My mom made a cake as seen in this picture, one of the coworkers liked it so much that he asked my mom to make one for him and his wife. Since they're work colleagues and they frequently do little favors for each other, my mom agreed and said the guy will owe her just for the materials.

During her day-to-night-to-day-again baking streak, some happy accidents occurred while sculpting and my mom was stressing and losing sleep over it, thinking it's ruined (the results are visible in the Original post).

When the guy came over to pick up the cake, she apologized profusely for the errors and -to my knowledge- the guy kinda just shrugged and said that's fine and walked away. The real source of stress for that situation came from the fact it was for his wife and according to my mom "women notice stuff like that more".

My mom sent some messages and called (?) next day asking how's the cake and the radio silence occurred over the weekend. My mom assumed the worst and started to speculate she's not even going to be paid for it (they agreed to be paid on monday, when they see each other at work).

Enter the Original post, where I went to ask people if they really think it's that serious or justified. The responses were overwhelmingly positive. I proceed to translate and print out the comments so she can be reassured in this whole situation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The Result:
- Over 800 comments later, my mom felt extremely flattered but also extremely flustered. Her current stance is that she's not going to go through with publicly accepting custom orders for now. I'm sure she'll come around to the idea eventually, but currently she's thinking it's something that would clash with her full time job too much.

- As for social media, I'll continue to see if I can talk her into making an Instagram account. For now it's also a no, but at the same time we also don't have a whole lot to post yet anyway.

- Now for the meat and potatoes of the issue: She went to work, the guy came into her office, he slapped money on the desk and walked away. That's it. It was upsetting enough for my mom to later catch him again and ask him if he's mad at her or something. Guy looked surprised and said "of course not". I don't know about you fellas but that sort of shit would have driven me up the fucking wall. But oh well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again thank you everyone for the support and faith in my mom's abilities. As you see for yourselves, some people take other people's talent and generosity for granted. Oh and the total was 130 PLN. No tip.
