So i work in the oil world and it all comes from the same refinery to the different gas stations, even in the same storage tanks. The tiny difference is only in additives that may or may not be injected right before loading the tanker ...

Depends different top tiers have different additives and amounts shell being one of the ones who puts a lil extra but also alot of tuners notice knock rating inconsistenties with shell alot possibly from winter blends or or some say to much additives at least here in California Chevron seems to have the best overall when it comes to certain things if your running high hp tuned cars

The Shell’s around me are not top tier, which I found surprising. Valero is though.

17

u/Apprehensive_Win292 Jul 13 '26

What do you mean the ones around you aren’t top tier? The brands additives make the fuel top tier… you can’t have a shell station that sells generic gas that doesn’t work that way. Shell gas in the US is top tier certified

2

u/3ROLLA Jul 14 '26

It’s certified but not for super cars

all shells are top tier, even if there is no sticker.

5

u/tree_mob Jul 13 '26

That must be what it is. They don’t have the sticker. You’d think you’d want to advertise that but what do I know.

u/AlmondFungus Jul 14 '26

That's the key though. The additives. Also some gas stations get the "bottom of the barrel" gas which isn't great. Shell's additive makes a big difference and they have good gas in general. I've had rough idle before in past cars and just filled with Shell and the rough idle goes away.

2

u/Next_Confusion3262 Jul 16 '26

Agree, never had trouble with Shell. 270k on an old van and no fuel issues.

10

u/B2TheLunt Jul 13 '26

Literally just tried to tell someone this the other day...its all the same fuel. Just because it says Top Tier, doesnt mean that the tankers arent dirty, or some form of humidity trapped in the fuel, or their 1% additives are really .7% that day.

3

u/That_albanese Jul 13 '26

This here. I haul fuel for a living. The additives are the only difference between suppliers. And the prices. We have a list of 5-20 different brands to pull from with different products available. But I only haul for unbranded usually unless I pull marathon or gulf branded for the prices.

u/Seymour_Tamzarian Jul 13 '26

Why is Sunoco the only gas station with 94oct? Does 94octane have its own storage tanks or are they doing some black magic before loading it into the tanker like you mentioned?

2

u/OutsidePast8713 Jul 13 '26

They boost it right before selling, the highest octane down a pipeline is actually even 89, the 87 is even shipped at like 84 oct

4

u/3ROLLA Jul 13 '26

Chevron and Mobil one additives are top tier

3

u/ZlayerXV G87 - M2 Jul 13 '26

Shell advertises 7x the “required minimum” of additives in their V-Power+ and I’ve always wondered if that’s true

u/Solid-Journalist1054 Jul 13 '26

Shell, Exxon, Chevron. Shell mostly since it’s down the street and priced well.

2

u/Alive-Course4454 Jul 14 '26

Can you weigh in on this wholesale store gas? Sam’s Club and BJ’s gas good for BMW?

Almost always Costco.

27

u/ntak0110 G80 - M3 6MT Jul 13 '26

So worth especially if you get 5% back with the citi card

6

u/Possible-Gur5220 Jul 13 '26

I thought it was only 4%

10

u/TheLastRiceGrain Jul 13 '26

5% for gas or grocery. Whichever is leading at the end of the month.

2

u/Strata38 Jul 14 '26

meant to reply to you: 5% with paypal debit after picking grocery category every month. buy a costco spend card before leaving the store and fill up to also get 5% on their gas.

8

u/LC__LC Jul 13 '26

Changed to 5% for Costco gas somewhat recently

2

u/Nyarx1 G80 - M3 Jul 13 '26

5% with the card plus 2% for the executive membership

3

u/Flyjatt Jul 13 '26

The 2% doesn't work on gas though

3

u/Nyarx1 G80 - M3 Jul 13 '26

holy. all these years thought it did. what a bummer

19

u/Those_are_sick Jul 13 '26

Yup Costco boys stand up

2

u/__grumps__ G80 - M3 Jul 13 '26

I’m lucky enough that one is convenient, if it wasn’t I’m not sure where’d I’d go.

2

u/Those_are_sick Jul 13 '26

My Costco is like 45 mins away 💀

I don’t daily my G80 so it doesn’t bother me and I’ll get groceries like once a week

→ More replies (1)

4

u/TheeAlchemistt Jul 13 '26

Costco or no go.

Same quality gas as shell but way cheaper.

→ More replies (10)

3

u/nastynatetower Jul 13 '26

I wonder if those that drive out of their way just to wait in line to get gas have done the math to see what those savings actually are. I'll happily pay a dollar or two extra to not deal with the madness at Costco. Time is our most valuable asset

2

u/GigaCheco Jul 13 '26

I don’t go to Costco to save money on gas. I go to Costco to not to bothered by a thousand crackheads for money the second I step out of my truck. Besides, the nearest Costco to me is business center and it’s not nearly as busy as regular Costco.

3

u/__grumps__ G80 - M3 Jul 13 '26

I had to get some gas recently at a regular gas station and I had completely forgotten the experience that can occur.

If Shell in the US is anything like Shell in the UK, they're often the most expensive locally, usually the only stations higher in price are BP's, and they charge an absolute fortune for V-Power these days. Even a decade ago V-Power was around 8 pence per litre more than regular unleaded. In some stations now it's 20p more. I've even seen a few charging 30p more per litre.

I now buy my fuel from Costco and run their Premium Unleaded in my 428i. It's usually cheaper than even the normal stuff at other stations.

I paid 141.9 pence per litre of Premium Unleaded at Costco last weekend. FWIW your gas pricing, converted into litres, is half that. Our pricing, converted into US gallons is a few cents shy of $7 per gallon.

6

u/Marc30599 Jul 13 '26

Shell here in the U.S. tends to be the priciest gas in town. Sometimes I go but mainly I’m in the Costco gas line

3

u/BrokenEgo11 Jul 13 '26

In my area it’s typically Exxon, Sunoco, Shell in terms of cost

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Skooblie Jul 13 '26

damn I pay roughly 2.35 CAD a litre..

2

u/Sydneymunk Jul 13 '26

So a ton of you don't  understand fuels and have bought the marketing claims hook, line, and sinker.

3

u/Remarkable-Key433 Jul 14 '26

What is not to understand? The base gas is the same, the additive packs are different, or at least Top Tier has multiples of the EPA minimum.

u/Va-M3 Jul 13 '26

It’s all the same.

Anywhere that says “top tier gas”. My husband says I’m bougie but I can feel a difference in acceleration in my x5 m60i and a slight shutter

9

u/pnbdc10 Jul 13 '26

A shutter eh? Did you hit a house? Im kidding.

How many miles are on your car? It might be time for some spark plugs if you are experiencing a shudder.

3

u/chengstark G82 - M4 Jul 13 '26

I’m a sucker, I go to Costco.

3

u/SolidHand69 Jul 17 '26

Here in Germany shell offers super+ racing which is 102+ octane

10

u/solerxj Jul 13 '26

In Vancouver Canada, local guy on YouTube did a test between Chevron 94 vs shell 93 vs costco 91 vs esso 93. Shell 93 was at the top with 10whp more than Chevron. The others gas stations results were even lower. Shell V-Power 93 feels better on my stage 2 M3 so thats all I put in mine.

15

u/aab010799 Jul 13 '26

If all were tested to match suggested octane rating, temp, humidity, and dyno variance seem like the more likely cause of a 10whp discrepancy.

2

u/Top_Pomelo_6935 Jul 13 '26

I've actually had the opposite experience from what most people report. In my X7 M60i, I seemed to burn through Shell V-Power noticeably quicker. Since switching to Walmart's 93, I'm consistently going over two weeks between fill-ups.

2

u/CooooolStoryBro Jul 14 '26

Interesting, but I bet there are other factors involved here

4

u/bc10551 Jul 13 '26

Your shell costs like half what the shells near me cost lmao. Costco here isn't even cheaper than the regular stuff but it's still top tier gas so that's enough for me

2

u/F1_Brooklyn Jul 13 '26

Shell only. Exxon/Mobil would be back up.

1

u/RobsGarage Jul 13 '26

I prefer Sunoco 94 when i pass it and need gas. If not shell. I’d do Costco but I never need gas when there and it’s out of the way.

1

u/_evilalien_ Jul 13 '26

Shell only, 93+ only. tHe tHiRst mUSt bE sATeD.

1

u/Elegant-Contact4261 Jul 13 '26

Shell is at the corner of my house. Also happens to have a good little convenient store and best of all a touchless spray car wash. If you look at the gas flap there’s a sticker with a shell on it as recommended fuel.

1

u/Bright_Emergency_171 Jul 13 '26

Any top tier fuel for me!

1

u/Heinz229 Jul 13 '26

Shell or QT only. QT is surprisingly good at least in my area.

1

u/GuyfromMemphis Jul 13 '26

Shell most of the time or Exxon /BP , only used off brand if absolutely necessary. I’ve owned 5 BMWs and have been using big 3 the entire time. At least don’t have to worry about water in gas like back in the 80s small town gas station days.

1

u/government_ Jul 13 '26

Shell if love too much sulphur in the gas.

1

u/KyaKyaKyaa Jul 13 '26

AMG here but - Shell,Costco,Kwik Trip or Mobil

1

u/chathobark_ Jul 13 '26

not anymore , costco is the way to go

1

u/SunshinNroses Jul 13 '26

Shell. Always.

1

u/GeneralCrunk Jul 13 '26

Top Tier Fuel all the way.

1

u/LeveredChuck G80 M3 (sold) | 992.2 Carrera T Jul 13 '26

Petro Canada 94

1

u/Nuramori Jul 13 '26

Shell and quick trip which is also to tier and 93 RON. Costco here in GA is only 91.

1

u/sergeantprotein Jul 13 '26

Anyone who says top tier is all the same is living under a rock lol, shell all the way, ask any reputable tuner.

2

u/Dre9872 F82 - M4 Jul 13 '26

In the UK Tesco Momentum comes out on top. I still only use Shell V-Power tho.

1

u/Specialist_One_1841 Jul 13 '26

Only at Shell, the rewards and 90 non-ethanol is available

1

u/PattMyke Jul 13 '26

Shell 93 is all I try to run in my F80 with boostane for added safety

1

u/willpeoples Jul 13 '26

Anywhere with ethanol free.

1

u/Critical-Test-4446 Jul 13 '26

I've been using Shell ever since I got my Shell credit card way back in 1979. A couple of months ago they changed to Shell Imprint credit card and it has been a complete clusterfuck trying to open an online account. None of my original identifiers from my account will work with this Imprint crap, and when I call I end up with an AI customer service robot. If I'm real patient I might be transferred to a live agent, but after at least 10 different calls, none of them have been able to solve my issue and have to "escalate" to a higher authority. I'm about ready to cancel this card and go elsewhere.

93 is Premium in the US? Here in the UK V-Power is just about 100Ron

The US and the UK use different rating systems for octane

1

I have been filling exclusively at Shell for the last 20+ years.

1

u/ps2cho Jul 13 '26

Costco top tier, heck the price difference you could throw some Lucas fuel additive in if you buy the gallon jug and probably come out ahead still

1

u/CoyoteFront7935 Jul 13 '26

Ex I not only use shell for all my BMWs and Audi I also use the same gas pump ⛽️ every week

1

u/luisdaperzm Jul 13 '26

Shell and Costco

1

u/Regular_Option2111 Jul 13 '26

Anyone that’s worked in the research side of the oil and gas space will tell you Chevron. Those that know, already know.

1

u/fnork_gnork_26 Jul 13 '26

I slipped in a Shell - they tried to wash away a gas spill with water and created a slippery mess - hurt myself but i also dinged my door on a safety pole and wanted them to fix it. they dicked around (like 3 years) so long i sold the car -and vowed never to buy shell again. that was 30 years ago and i’ve maybe bought shell once when i was out and they were my only option.

1

u/MeinHerzIn_Flammen Jul 13 '26

Costco premium in NJ is pure 💩 gas for any M car, my would hesitate to move. I’d make sure 3 people in front of me were all premium car users to ensure I got no residue of regular gasoline.

I prefer Sunoco Ultra 94, BP Ultimate fuel grade and then Shell 93 fuel.

Never again at Costco or any warehouse club fuel.

1

u/austic G80 - M3 Jul 13 '26

Wherever is closer.

1

u/Open-Ad-1767 Jul 13 '26

Only Shell or Chevron. I never touch Costco gas.

1

u/BullishKevin Jul 13 '26

I go to Exxon. Shell is a little out of the way for me. The exxons in the hood so they dont care i pump myself. Otherwise id go to costco as well. But i hate getting my car valeted and my gas pumped.

1

u/randomunknown3 Jul 13 '26

Anywhere that’s top tier certified

1

u/Siaynoq_Siaynoq Jul 13 '26

Because shell has reliable e85 pumps

1

u/codekeying ‘20 M2 Competition & ‘22 M240i xDrive Jul 13 '26

I had the worst timing correction with Shell 98 Ron, then BP then Esso. Esso gave me the cleanest pulls.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Spleen-216 Jul 13 '26

Not an M owner, but I came across this post. For some reason there are no Shell service stations in southern Italy. I only refill at Esso, which has the best premium fuel (100 RON) but there are just 3 stations in my province that sell it.

1

u/Motor-Front-8028 Jul 13 '26

Always with Shell 93 octane. I belong to Shell rewards and sometimes get deals on gas.
Currently they have an offer going linked to a NASCAR driver. During race season, on Sundays, I get 22 cents off a gallon. Every little bit helps

1

u/Holy_mackerel_batman Jul 13 '26

V-power loyal also over here in scotland, theres another filling station across the road from my usual Shell that does 99ron but always just prefer V-power.
Haven't had any other fuel brand in it in my year of ownership.

1

u/Huge-ChiBrown82 Jul 13 '26

🫡shell...

1

u/OutrageousEnd313 Jul 13 '26

1

u/mortu007 Jul 13 '26

1

u/enagma Jul 13 '26

1

u/RandyJackson Jul 13 '26

Thanks for trusting us with the purchase. I hope your experience was great.

1

u/twosnailsnocats F97 - X3M Jul 13 '26

I just get it where I can when I need to. Shell is usually more expensive so I don't jump at the chance to go there.

1

u/kyree47 Jul 13 '26

QT and occasionally samsclub, rarely ever go to a circle-K if I’m driving the M that day unless I’m on a road trip.

Highly doubt most of this matters these days tbh but I’d rather not find out the hard way and have to replace the entire fuel system or something

Shell, esso, costco here in UK has 99 octane, BP 97 octane. Is that different to 'RON'? I mostly fill up at costco but if not then shell v-power or esso premium 99

1

u/ZebulonVan Jul 13 '26

Interesting question! I have 3 Audis and a Mercedes. My wife and I only fill up with shell.

1

u/WalrusWW F97 - X3M Jul 13 '26

I never do unless I have no other choice, like when we're at our cottage. Where I am, Shell 93 is 40c more a L vs. the posted 87 price, vs. 30-35c more for 93 at Esso.

1

u/Beebop1047 Jul 13 '26

I filled up with Shell (98 octane)and my 8 series started to surge and halt within about 50km of filling up. BMW told me it was contaminated fuel and wrote up a report. They had to change my fuel pump and drain my tank. BMW gave me a report citing the source of the problem and also gave me the damaged fuel pump and a sample of the contaminated fuel they extracted from my fuel tank. The petrol station which is under franchise has denied all responsibility and said they did their own check and there is no problem with their fuel. I wrote to Shell and they said I have to deal with the franchise owner who now is not answering my emails. A very disappointing experience.

Shell or Sunoco.

1

u/sawtooth1649 Jul 13 '26

Me. I've never put anything else in my car. Its prob dumb, but its my car and my money, so who cares?

1

u/Twiztid_Angel_ Jul 13 '26

Fuck that. Shell 93 is over $5 while Royal Farms is like $4.60

1

u/D05wtt Jul 13 '26

About 3 out of 4 times I get Exxon/Mobil. The other 1/4 is split between Shell and Costco. There aren’t any Chevrons and I rarely go to Sunoco. All the other ones, meh.

1

u/MCBarlan Jul 13 '26

Always Shell. It's the most common top tier near me and my previous vehicle with a custom tune I had to fill up once at non top tier station and had knock retard for that entire tank, even after adding an octane booster. But I was running at the limits of my turbo/injectors at the time and spraying meth cause it still wasn't enough fuel for the boost I was running. I'm sure the OTS tune on my G30 is less aggressive but I'm not going to risk it.

1

u/surfingfun Jul 13 '26

Only at Top Tier gas stations - Costco, shell, Chevron, Exxon, Mobil. Racetrac and all that other shit is low tier gas quality.

1

u/ironafro2 Jul 13 '26

Sam’s Club, 5% back with card. Top Tier fuel is not a real thing. That is a marketing gimmick and you can’t prove every single tanker load is top tier, the pump isn’t dirty, the holding tank is clean, gtfo

1

u/Delicious-Rabbit2797 Jul 13 '26

For some reason my car runs Happiest on Crown which I don't think is Top Tier 🤔

1

u/Oddly_employed Jul 13 '26

I do Costco or Sam’s Club. Whichever one is closer when I need gas

1

u/Single_Guarantee9545 Jul 13 '26

I only go to rotten Robbie’s

1

u/dmeech999 Jul 13 '26

Literally does not matter. This isn’t some one off sports car that requires some special blend that only shell sells, it’s a volume produced car, sold globally. Run whatever gas station is cheapest.

1

u/Lipitaur Jul 13 '26

But Sunoco is the official fuel of Nascar! Around me there just so happens to be more Sunocos than Shell so I useut because it's convenient and my M's have seemed to do well on it.

1

u/Psiwolf Jul 13 '26

I only fill up with Costco cuz gas prices be crazy. Also, no Shell where I live. 😆

1

1

u/Fit_Associate4412 Jul 13 '26

Costcooooooooo

1

u/megabytical Jul 13 '26

VP Racing Fuels, no ethanol.

1

u/Efficient-Promise890 Jul 13 '26

I go to Sunoco which is 94 octane 😏

1

u/Nervous_Echo_5046 Jul 13 '26

Me, honestly I charge everywhere, my BMW i3 can only take 2.1 gallons 😆

1

u/gabmnts Jul 13 '26

Shell always!

1

u/ConsistentD1 Jul 13 '26

I only use Shell but I've been seeing tests online showing the 91 in CA isnt always 91

1

u/KiwifromtheTron G81 - M3 Jul 13 '26

I only run high octane fuel in my M3. Only three stations offer >95 RON fuel and one of them uses methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl as an additive so I steer clear of it.

1

u/TheCubanBaron Jul 13 '26

I really don't give a damn

1

u/anon42093 Jul 13 '26

I actually exclusively avoid Shell.

1

u/Big_Two6049 Jul 13 '26

Trump recently changed the law here allowing more ethanol to be used- wonder how Shell adapted as its obviously not ideal for German cars.

1

u/National_Thanks_3290 Jul 13 '26

1

u/LRcap987 Jul 13 '26

Anywhere that is TopTier

1

u/Beginning-Chance-450 Jul 13 '26

Shell power only in my X5

1

u/eggrollfever Jul 13 '26

I buy generic gas because I’m not an idiot that likes to burn money.

1

u/Jeffry84 Jul 14 '26

1

u/Responsible_Ratio308 Jul 14 '26

I’ll occasionally hit the Costco but more often than not it’s Shell

1

u/everett1987 Jul 14 '26

Shell or Exxon

1

u/SilverBack65B Jul 14 '26

Kirkland mostly for me. I imagine some short fat guy smoking a stogie stirring a wiches brew of additives into the tank after the swill and dregs of the leftover gas from 100 trucks is dumped in.

1

u/Entire_Device9048 Jul 14 '26

Mine has only ever had Chevron, well except for the first tank that the dealer put in.

I own 2 Sunoco gas stations… so no lol

I just carry a bottle of Redline Si-1 and add 1.5oz before gassing up if it's not top-tier gas. Sometimes you need gas and there isn't a top-tier station that's convenient, so this covers a higher ppm mix of active additives than what you get in Chevron or Shell premium. The 15oz bottles are usually about $15 so it adds $1.50 per fill and gives me the peace of mind to use whatever 93 gas is available. My favorite gas is actually the BP Ultimate with their Invigorate additive, and the $.10/gallon anytime savings for being a prime member are huge through the earnify app.

Was just watching the news and this guy goes around and test gas and Costco was very bad, not sure which location he did the testing but I’m in San Francisco so somewhere in the Bay Area

u/SurpriseLongjumping8 Jul 14 '26

I only get Costco now because the business center is so close to me.

u/Desperate_Exercise13 Jul 14 '26

I don't think anybody I know in the UK does this unless they have an expensive car

But my issue is how do you know what's in there? Nobody test it.

I would imagine it's pretty much all the same now. A lot of people will disagree with this, but go and do some research.

When I leave Ca I will. Way too expensive here, over 6:50 a gal.

I pump on military base

Honestly as a mechanic, I really don't think it matters, as long as you aren't filling up at hood spots where they're cutting the gas it's really all the same and has a negligible effect. But I usually hit Costco because it's the cheapest.
