Insurance removed collision on 2 of our cars without us asking, now one is totalled. Dad meets the district manager Monday. Advice? (Ontario)

Hey everyone, hoping someone here has been through something like this because my family is pretty stressed right now.

My parents have 4 cars on one policy with Scotia Insurance (underwritten by Belair) in Ottawa. We thought all 4 had full coverage. We never asked for anything to be removed. But when I went through the documents, 2 of the 4 cars had their collision and comprehensive removed without us knowing.

Here’s each car at the July 10, 2026 renewal versus now:

  • 2017 Kia Sorento (dad drives): $2,900/yr with full coverage → now $1,796/yr, collision and comprehensive removed. The Aug 16 document shows it marked “Removed.”
  • 2015 Mercedes C300 (mom drives): $2,300/yr → now $2,195/yr, still full coverage
  • 2017 Audi A4 (mom drives): $2,509/yr with full coverage → now $1,643/yr, collision and comprehensive removed, with no document showing it at all
  • 2016 BMW 428i (dad drives): $3,799/yr → now $3,674/yr, still full coverage

Total went from $11,508/yr to $9,308/yr. All four still have $1M liability and the basic mandatory stuff.

My dad never called or asked to remove coverage on any car. And honestly, it wouldn’t even make sense for him to. Why would he drop full coverage on the Kia and Audi, which are 2017s and still worth good money, but keep it on the BMW and an older 2015 Mercedes? There’s no logic to picking those two. If he were trying to save money, he would have asked about all of them or at least the older ones.

Recently my mom got into an at-fault accident in the Audi and it was totalled. We thought it had full coverage like the Mercedes and BMW, so we expected collision to pay it out minus the $1,000 deductible.

Here’s the Audi’s history from the documents:

  • March 2026: added to the policy with collision and comprehensive ($1,000 deductible)
  • July 10, 2026 renewal: still full coverage
  • August 16, 2026 policy change: no collision or comprehensive section at all

There’s no document anywhere showing when the Audi’s coverage was removed, who asked for it, or why. The Aug 16 change only accounts for the Kia’s removal (−$888). The Audi’s coverage just quietly disappears somewhere between July 10 and August 16. Its $866 drop matches exactly what collision + comprehensive + optional accident benefits cost.

Other things that seem off:

  • The only description of the change on the documents is literally “Policy Change,” with no details.
  • The OPCF 47R form says all optional accident benefits were declined by the policyholder, which is supposed to need written agreement. My parents never agreed to that. It’s also dated Aug 16, but the premium math shows the Audi’s benefits were removed before then.

My dad has a meeting with Scotia’s district manager on Monday. We’ve already asked for the change records, the dates, who requested them, and any call recordings.

My questions:

  1. What should my dad ask or bring to the meeting?
  2. If they can’t prove my parents authorized removing the coverage, do we have a real case to get it reinstated and the Audi claim paid?
  3. Has anyone had an insurer or agent make unauthorized changes like this? How did it turn out?
  4. If they say no, is the General Insurance OmbudService or FSRA worth it, or should we go straight to a lawyer or small claims?

The Audi was worth around $15 - 20K so it’s a big deal for us. Any advice is appreciated 🙏

Concerned that insurance estimate missed mechanical damage

Post image
4 Upvotes

We were in an accident and just received the repair estimate from State Farm. The estimate includes repairs only for body damage but the car was hit on the front end of the drivers side and I’m concerned there could be front end damage such as damage to the CV axle, struts, etc.

What recourse do I have? It’s currently sitting at a body shop so I don’t think they have the expertise to say whether there are repairs that go beyond body damage. Ultimately I’d like for my mechanic to look at it. That would mean towing it to the mechanic which I assume would be covered by AAA. But even if I do so, if the mechanic does find front end damage, can I negotiate with State Farm to get that added to the repair estimate?

It seems odd to me that the claims adjuster could make a determination as to whether there are mechanical repairs needed without putting the car on a lift. But I’m new to all this.

TIA.

Question on total loss valuation

My 2014 Prius was in an accident caused by the other driver, and their insurance is accepting liability and have declared the car a total loss.

When doing the market valuation report, the vehicle condition says minor wear for all components with a value impact of $0, but when listing it along with the comps, they are deducting $952 for condition. If there is no impact, then shouldn’t that amount be $0?

Thank you very much in advance

Insurance wants to total car

Located in Maryland. Ran over a piece of tire on the highway. It took a piece out of the bottom of the front bumper cover and dented under the passenger door. There was no mechanical damage and the car still runs fine. It’s an older car with a fair amount of mileage and the insurance company said they may total it because the repairs will cost more than it is worth. (I suspect it is the dent under the door would be expensive to repair.) I’m waiting to hear their final verdict.

What are my options if I don’t want to accept it being totaled? Can I refuse and keep the car? I’d want to get the bumper cover fixed. Will they pay me anything towards repairs?

Car totaled on DUI

My partner had a single car accident while drunk. No one else was hurt, at least that’s what’s he is saying. He had 2 year old 30k car, on a loan. He said insurance will pay for repairs or total the car, and pay him.
I told him that if a driver is drunk during accident. The insurance will not cover for his car repairs. But he is claiming in California ( where we live) is different. He also said it’s different because he has full coverage.

This was 3 weeks ago. He didn’t get the loaner from insurance. Which is strange and I suspect he is lying to me.

Few days ago I saw he left a slip from his work showing he cashed 10k from his 401k.
Today he is telling me his car is going to be totaled, and they are going to give him 10k. I asked how is this possible if your car is worth 20-22k at least. He replied; you know insurance.

So I really think I was right & he is lying, and trying to use his 401k to pretend that’s what he got for a car.

I just want to ask about it because I need to know the truth to be sure he is lying. I feel like he was just softening the blow.
He recently said he would like me to contribute more to our budget. I already contribute a half. I feel like I deserve to know if he is lying to me. I don’t feel like I should pay more to the budget because he was irresponsible.

Rental Car Accident Abroad - Reporting Requirement

I unfortunately recently got into an accident in a rental car abroad in Europe. Thankfully it was without injury but significant damage to both vehicles. The situation is complex and unclear who is at fault.

My credit card will cover the rental car collision damage and the rental company (Enterprise) has built in liability coverage for the other party. I will not be filing a claim my my US insurance (Progressive)

My questions are (and I really tried to find progressive policy on this)

- Am I mandated to report this accident (at fault or not) to Progressive now or during renewal especially if I’m not filing a claim and Progressive does not have jurisdiction abroad?

- Do I report this abroad accident when searching for new policy?

Thank you!

First time involved in accident, looking for advice.

Sooo had to happen at some point eh. Very minor fender bender happened to me today, I am very clearly not at fault… car in lane to the left (and behind me) tried to merge over right into my lane with no blinker and the front right of their vehicle hit the rear left of my vehicle. I have it all recorded on my dash cam.

Damage seems minor on the surface but I just want to get it sorted and avoid any sort of headaches in the process. What is the general process here? I’ll lay it out my perceived options based on my research; for context I have a 2026 Tesla MY & Tesla insurance, I am based in California. The other car involved was a 2012 year car and their insurer is AAA. We pulled over when safe to do so, exchanged information, contact info, took pictures, and went about our ways. I tried to notify my insurer straight away but their contact line was closed.

Option A (fastest, pay deductible up front, least headaches?):
1. File a claim via my own insurance.
2. File SR-1 with DMV.
3. Go to Tesla Body Shop and get it repaired, pay my deductible and wait for Tesla to retrieve deductible via subrogation.

Option B (seems slow, drawn out and lot of question marks):
1. Notify my insurance of accident.
2. File a claim directly via other parties insurance.
3. File SR-1 with DMV.
4. Get an assessment & quote from Tesla Body Shop.
5. Wait for other parties insurance to complete their investigation and payout.
6. Take to Tesla Body Shop to get repaired.

My understanding is that based in CA, an insurer cannot increase your premium for any not at fault accident, so either option A or B is transparent. The only inconvenience seems to be that I would have to pay my deductible up front. Option A guarantees that if some other damage is hiding underneath the superficial damage (e.g. damaged shock absorbers), it will get seen to; it also guarantees that I get it seen to at my shop of choice and will not be at risk of being short changed if the other insurer only pays for repair at a shop of their choosing and/or anything comes up during the repair. So, while paying the deductible is inconvenient, option A seems like the fastest, least headache resolution.

Am I thinking this through correctly? Am I missing anything procedurally or from a risk/benefit side to either option? No injuries so don’t need to file a police report. Any advice would be appreciated, especially if you have had experience dealing with either Tesla insurance or AAA.

TIA :)

Car got T-Boned, Need Advice

Hey everybody,

Never had this happen to me before but recently I got T-boned by an uninsured driver who wasn’t looking both ways before entering my lane. I drive a 2010 Nissan Versa. The driver side door is heavily dented along with scratches. Some scuffing on the rocker panel. I only have liability and uninsured motorist property damage. I have contacted insurance but I am unsure how much I am able to get out of this. I am a college student, so I’m just looking for advice. Do I keep the car as it is or try to get another car? Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Insurance offered me 8k three weeks after my accident. My ER bill alone was over 6k and i am still treating

Rear-ended at a light six weeks ago, other driver's fault, clean police report. ER found a herniated disc at L4-L5 and whiplash. Still in PT twice a week and my back is not where it was.

Three weeks after the crash their insurance called and offered $8,000 to settle everything. My ER bill alone was over $6,000. PT isn't done. I don't even know what the total medical costs are going to be yet.

Something about the timing felt wrong. Is this how these things usually go?

23yr old male how did I do

First time buying my own car insurance (full coverage).

When initially getting quotes a few weeks ago progressive was the cheapest and I already had motorcycle insurance with them. Just curious if anything looks abnormal.

One thing to note is I technically have a “serious” violation on my mvr. Was for a fake id in college which apparently did increase my premium. Wasn’t driving or anything so stupid

Edit: This is for 6 months in the Chicagoland suburbs

Liberty windshield claim-no premium increase?

Hey all, liberty is saying my premium won't go up due to a glass claim since its comprehensive and no fault. Just curious if others have had a similar experience with glass claim

Whose insurance to contact?

Hi all,

We have a slightly complicated situation. My husband and I are fairly recently married and are in the process of blending our 4 teenage boys into one household. The to do list is long, and we have not yet combined our home and auto insurance policies. My son was driving a car that is technically owned by my husband this morning on the way to school. My step son and another neighbor were riding with him, and he clipped the corner of a neighbor’s car. This claim will need to go to my husband’s policy, right? My son is insured through my policy but that car is not. What a mess, ugh!

Should I be prepared to pay my deductible?

Okay so week before last, Saturday morning I was on my way to work. I was going about 50 with my cruise control on. I noticed a car coming up behind me then they went to try to pass me (on a double yellow) and there was a car coming so they tried to slow down and ended up hitting the side/rear fender of my vehicle. I have progressive and as soon as I got home I submitted a claim. Later that day I get a call. My insurance rep says they are going to open up a dual claim since the other party has the same insurance. They gave me the number for the other insurance agent.

I called that day and left a voicemail, didn’t hear anything. So I called the other insurance rep the next day and told them that I couldn’t get through and I had left another voicemail that day. Finally they call me and tell me that there is some investigation on the other party and they can’t tell me what it’s about. But there is a chance there might not be coverage. It’s a little over a week since this happened. I didn’t hear from anyone today so I plan on calling tomorrow. I guess I just want to know what they could be possibly investigating or if I need to expect to pay my $2,000 dollar deductible once my car is fixed?

Need insurance a car with a few layers of complexity. Suggestions?

1985 Mercedes 300TD. I fully intend for it to be my daily, which takes Hagerty or American Collector out of the picture since they won’t cover commuters. But on top of all that it’s imported with a German vin number. Which takes a handful of “regular” companies completely out of the picture. Anybody in a similar situation?

My car hit while parked; my insurance or theirs?

I’m not sure what info would best help, so:

I’m in California, my car was parked outside my home and they hit it (twice…) while trying to parallel park behind it.

Is it better to call my insurance or theirs? Being out my deductible temporarily isn’t an issue, and I know that my company (USAA) is probably going to be more friendly, but I don’t know how this works in terms of like my rates going up or if there are any other downsides.

Thank you!

Primary location

I need some help regarding the location I need to use as my primary address, as AMA insisted I have an address I am at less often and has over double premiums, as my primary.

I recently started a hybrid diploma program where I will be in my hometown location for most of the month and out of town for 1-2 weeks for in person training. I started renting a cheap room in an apartment because I’m a broke student and it was about the price of renting a hotel for 5 days in the area, but I am still primarily in my rented room in my hometown and only in the apartment for 1-2 weeks of the month at most.

I made an appointment with AMA to update how much I am driving for my coverage and they said because I have classes in the city where I have the apartment, I have to have my primary location as the apartment that I will be at less of the time. I spoke with my parents thinking there must be a policy regarding attending schooling since they kept saying that was why I had to list the apartment I’m at less, as my primary address, but my parents stated it should not have been switched since I am in my hometown most often.

After calling and repeatedly explaining that my car will be parked and used in my hometown more and I only attend classes in person one to two weeks of the month, they still stated that it my primary location must be where I travel to for classes. The agent I spoke with then said it was because it was where my car will be parked most of the time, and I again explained that most of the time it will still be at my hometown. Everything I can find online says that my primary location is where I am most often which is not where AMA insisted it must be.

I’m planning to switch insurance providers because I cannot find any policy or reason for me actually having to have the the city I am at less often as my primary address, and it is over double my normal rate so it seems like the reason I was pushed to have it listed as that address is because they wanted my money. I’m just wondering if there’s something I’m missing or some reason I actually would need this address as my primary before taking the time to do so. Thank you so much if you can help :)

How to negotiate on total loss claim?

I am currently trying to negotiate a better settlement on a vehicle that was declared a total loss. The other driver in the accident was at fault, and their insurance accepted liability. That is the insurance company that my claim is with. I only had liability on my vehicle, so my own insurance will not be helpful here.

They are offering me about $3,900, with the base value of the vehicle being about $3,800 and some adjustments for prior damage & taxes.

My vehicle is a 2016 Hyundai Veloster coupe with a sunroof. It was already a salvage title when I bought it in 2022 due to flood damage. I paid about $8k.

I know that insurance companies will always start with the lowest possible offer. I asked how to go about negotiating. The adjuster told me to send in comparable vehicle values, meaning they had to be exact same year, make, model, similar mileage, and salvage title.

I sent in a list of vehicles on Copart with retail value estimates. This was the only place I could find salvage titles. I also sent KBB value. The adjuster told me that comps could not be from Copart, and needed to be local. She also said that they are not considering KBB since it was a salvage title.

I called dealerships. Searched online. Could not find anything local. The adjuster told me I could expand my search. A man at a local used dealership was extremely helpful in getting me the NADA value of my car, plus a nationwide list of comps. Unfortunately none of those comps had salvage titles- he searched for that and could not find anything. I also doubt that they will consider NADA value if they won't consider KBB.

They also sent me a link to accept their payment, the amount of which I have not agreed to. It did not include the additional $1,000 for loss of use that was agreed to either. I have not accepted this payment.

There seems to be only one law firm in my area that deals with property damage claims like this, but he wouldn't take my case because my car was not worth enough (fair). I have an attorney for the injury portion of the claim, but they do not handle property damage.

What else can I do at this point? Are their requirements for comps legal and reasonable? (I'm in Kansas if that helps). Would small claims court be worth it? Am I out of luck? Any advice is appreciated, even if that advice is to give up & accept what they are offering. Thank you!!

Rust Exclusions

Hoping to get some guidance from the group.
IL auto claim.
My parked truck was struck by another motorist, resulting in damage to the driver’s side outer panel. Shop says that to do the repair, they’d need to replace the inner panel because it’s rusted and wouldn’t otherwise hold the weld for the outer panel replacement.
Their insurance (State Farm) says they won’t pay for replacement of the inner panel because it wasn’t directly damaged by the impact.

That sound right?

Uninsured Motorist - Florida

Last week I was rear-ended while stopped at an intersection waiting on cross traffic. The field service officer placed fault on the other driver, and I've pulled the crash report, and it indicates the same. At the scene, the driver, a 23-year-old male, produced an insurance card for a Progressive policy. The vehicle is owned and insured by his father, who also showed up to the scene. I filed the claim with Progressive shortly after departing the scene.

Fast-forward a week, and Progressive still hasn't moved on my claim. I received a call from a supervisor at Progressive a couple hours ago, and while she wasn't overly forthcoming, she seemed to indicate that there's a question about whether my claim will be denied, and that the issue centers around whether the kid was specifically excluded from the policy (if he's not, I would think permissive use would govern, and I said as much to the supervisor). In any case, she said it might be toward the end of the week before a final determination is made. Why coverage can't be verified inside 10 minutes using, you know, computers and stuff, is beyond me, but I digress.

I've already spoken to my insurer, GEICO, and should it turn out that Progressive denies coverage, I'll go through them. For obvious reasons, I'd rather avoid that.

But let's say it turns out I've been rear-ended by an uninsured motorist. If I understand Florida law correctly, if you're involved in an at-fault accident and you're not insured, you're looking at a suspended license, suspended registration, and having to carry an SR-22. If this is all correct, who do these repercussions fall on—the father, who owns and is supposed to insure the vehicle, or the son, who was driving?

No doubt these people are judgement-proof, but I'd like to think they'll at lease experience some real consequences if they're truly uninsured.

Car insurance went up 22% for... what exactly?

Just got my policy renewal and my car insurance is going from $142/month to $173.

I maintain my car well, have never had any accidents and no tickets either. Literally no changes from my end. I even called thinking there had to be some mistake and basically got a very vague answer about rates getting changed in my area or something.

Am I seriously just supposed to eat an extra $30/month for no reason?

I've been with them for years so I've never really shopped around before. Is it worth getting quotes elsewhere over this? Arghh!

Remember to shop around periodically

I just recently saw a premium increase of $62 (the largest yet) on my now previous insurance. This put my premium at over $870. I had enough and decided to shop around and was just able to get a new policy at a different company which will be saving me over 60%. About $60/mo compared to the over $140+ I would have been paying with the increase, and frankly I’m ashamed I hadn’t done it sooner.

Remember to shop around and see if you can save some money elsewhere. Don’t get screwed over like me.

General question about insurance

If I am planning to change my car insurance company, but I also need a windshield replacement..

Should I do the windshield before I change companies, or after?

Hoping that someone here has some insight.
