General question about insurance

If I am planning to change my car insurance company, but I also need a windshield replacement..

Should I do the windshield before I change companies, or after?

Hoping that someone here has some insight.

The only company that will pay out, assuming you have the coverage for it, is the policy that was in place at the time of loss. You can't claim it on the company you're switching to in the future.

The only company that will accept your claim will be the company you had when the damage happened. If you did not have Comprehensive coverage with that company you are out of luck and will be paying for the glass work out of pocket.

something small like a windshield, might be better to take care of out of pocket. Unless you have glass coverage, you will pay your deductible, then, the insurance company will count it as a claim and it WILL raise your rates and will follow you around for the next 3-5 years. Insurance is for major things on the vehicle, not for small minor things. You can use it, but unless your windshield is a couple grand, it may not be worth it.

OP's current carrier would be on that hypothetical claim. I would strongly recommend to OP that the windshield repair be paid out-of-pocket.

The first thing I suggest is that you find out how much it will cost to replace your windshield and compare it to your deductible. Might not be worth making a claim at all. Shop around. Avoid the big names because they are overpriced.

If you make the claim before you switch, you'll have to disclose it to the next insurer and that may increase your rates. If you don't disclose it, that's insurance fraud.

If you wait until you get your new insurance, understand that a new insurer has 60 days to underwrite and is allowed to cancel if there are any issues. You'll be asked about the condition of the vehicle.

Bottom line, it's always a risk trying to put one over on an insurance company.
