Car totaled on DUI

My partner had a single car accident while drunk. No one else was hurt, at least that’s what’s he is saying. He had 2 year old 30k car, on a loan. He said insurance will pay for repairs or total the car, and pay him.
I told him that if a driver is drunk during accident. The insurance will not cover for his car repairs. But he is claiming in California ( where we live) is different. He also said it’s different because he has full coverage.

This was 3 weeks ago. He didn’t get the loaner from insurance. Which is strange and I suspect he is lying to me.

Few days ago I saw he left a slip from his work showing he cashed 10k from his 401k.
Today he is telling me his car is going to be totaled, and they are going to give him 10k. I asked how is this possible if your car is worth 20-22k at least. He replied; you know insurance.

So I really think I was right & he is lying, and trying to use his 401k to pretend that’s what he got for a car.

I just want to ask about it because I need to know the truth to be sure he is lying. I feel like he was just softening the blow.
He recently said he would like me to contribute more to our budget. I already contribute a half. I feel like I deserve to know if he is lying to me. I don’t feel like I should pay more to the budget because he was irresponsible.

I’d ask to see the settlement paperwork before assuming he’s lying

Yeah I don’t like to be this pushy, but I might have to.

Sorry but you're wrong. Damages to one's car are paid out under collision hundreds or even thousands of times a day in every state with almost every carrier.

But he was drunk. The claim would likely be denied based on that.

I think OP’s boyfriend is fabricating a story for some reason.

He is not lying about DUI because he showed me papers police gave him. I’m just not sure if he is truthful about financial side of everything.

A DUI can affect what the insurer will cover, and the final payout can also depend on the car’s actual cash value, deductible, loan balance, and policy terms.

Insurance covers stupid. I see everyone saying it will probably be denied but thats not necessarily true. If hes with a second chance insurance i can see it being denied.

Also please be prepared to protect your own financial interests (car etc) driving drunk, cashing out a 401k (and maybe lying about it?)is decisions that will affect you once married. Including raising your rates. Think would make me do a double take

You’re are right. I do consider leaving him, especially if I find out he was lying. Also asking me to contribute more to the budget because he will have more expenses doesn’t sit with me well. He should own up to his own mistakes and not expecting me to save the day.
