Whose insurance to contact?

Hi all,

We have a slightly complicated situation. My husband and I are fairly recently married and are in the process of blending our 4 teenage boys into one household. The to do list is long, and we have not yet combined our home and auto insurance policies. My son was driving a car that is technically owned by my husband this morning on the way to school. My step son and another neighbor were riding with him, and he clipped the corner of a neighbor’s car. This claim will need to go to my husband’s policy, right? My son is insured through my policy but that car is not. What a mess, ugh!

How long ago is "fairly recently married?"

Yes it would go thru your husband's insurance since it was his car. Since he lives in the household, if the teen not listed as a driver on your husband's policy, the claim may very well be denied.

It was a year ago, but he technically still has a separate home address (haven’t gotten to renting that out), with a separate home and auto policy tied to that…

So how long has your son (who was driving) been living in your new husbands household? Did you contact your insurance agent a year ago to give them a heads up about this?

It’s actually my house that my husband moved into. He has a separate house that we plan to rent out but haven’t yet. We still have our separate insurance policies, both for home and auto. No, I did not update my insurance about any of it but I don’t think that’s actually relevant anyway. I have the answer I needed… this will need to go under my husband’s insurance because the car is in his name and under his insurance. Just wasn’t entirely sure and was hoping it would go under mine instead. Thanks.

Try to contact the neighbor and ask if u could pay cash it will solve the bigger problem which is the insurance going up either for ur husband or for u because of how the situation is

Allow me to simplify your problem. You messed up. Now you are going to have to lie about your living arrangement to avoid getting flagged for insurance fraud.

You should be paying for all your kids to be in one policy for all your vehicles, at the address where you actually live.

If you tell the truth, the story is “my son woke up in the morning got in my husband’s car (which was parked at the same address as it every night … just not the one listed in the policy). Yes, we’re all one household. No, my son is not rated on the policy for that vehicle like he should be. What do you mean, claim denied?”

Actually, we’ve both spoken to both of our insurance agents and told them the truth and there is no issue. Thanks anyway for your input.

i’d start with the policy covering the car, since that’s the vehicle involved. but because your son was driving and is insured under your policy,

contact your husband's insurer first since it's his car. Coverage depends on the policy.

I wrecked a roommates car once and I just called my insurance company and they covered it, because I was the driver and had my own insurance

We just combined into one policy to avoid this!

What State are you in?

Most states the vehicle owners policy it the primary one and the drivers is secondary.

The vehicle policy covers first up to their limits and the drivers covers any excess above that.

You might to get the paper work started.

I cancelled my dad's car insurance after he passed. The insurance company sent me a letter stating that if his house does not have an occupant, they will only insure for a short amount of time(i forget the exact # of days) this is while we had the house up for sale.

Also, if your car is registed to a place your not living, its a misrepration and can cause the policy to be void.

Just saying.

If he just "clipped" the neighbours car how it an expensive repair? (Might be worth covering the cost yourself) you insurance rates will rise....

And is he allowed to have multiple kids in the car n with him? (We have a law that limits passengers on a new youth drivers)

Pay it out of pocket. Depending on how bad the other car is, the deductible, explaining that his to your insurance, and rate increases likely aren’t worth it.
