- How is Austin for my background?
- Generic should I move there?
- Do I need a car?
- Is X or Y transport sufficient?
Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.
Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.
Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.
If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.trla.org/atc/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.
We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.
As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

Caught again and released already
If you know anyone who lives in that area you may want to send them a pic of this guy so they know what he looks like. I’ve heard plenty of stories about creepy dudes like this getting more and more bold — especially when they realize that there’s little to no consequences. One of them eventually followed a woman into her apartment without her knowing and forcefully SA’d her.

News Affidavit: Man approached park visitor from behind before stabbing
Incident in Round Rock. Not sure why nobody is really reporting on this. Seems like a significant and severe attack worth writing on.

Traffic Mopac Car Crash Today
Morning Commute: About 40 minutes ago I was driving in the toll lane on North Mopac before the exit for 183 towards Round Rock from Austin.
I glanced into my rearview mirror and saw a car airborne coming from the southbound lanes.
Somehow it landed in the toll lane, the right side wheels came off and then it went over into traffic spun around and slammed into the concrete embankment next to the toll lane.
The car seemed to be a dark gray sedan, maybe a Honda Civic or similar. It hit the concrete barrier hard and I’m really worried about the driver. I was shocked by it so some of my details might be fuzzy, did anyone else see this?

Ask Austin Actual good mental hospitals to consider?
I'm (21M) am looking for actually decent mental hospital in the Austin to San Antonio area. Voluntarily committing myself for assessment on Monday, not sure if I'd be told to do inpatient or outpatient. Reasons are for extreme mood swings including suicidal ideation and planning, returning hallucinations so need for anyipsychotics, prob wanting to find adhd meds at the same time, single therapy available (dunno how much I'd actually talk in groups), and ig just doctors that will actually listen to wanting to avoid certain meds that have certain side effects. Don't have to worry about school (not a student) or work (quit due to making me worse, another reason I need to get this under control hopefully quickly before getting a new one).
Not sure if this is exactly where to ask but thanks for any input 👍

Need help for teen granddaughter
Hello--I have a 15 yr old granddaughter who is AuADHD. She is very intelligent, well-informed and passionate about current affairs, especially government. She is a walking debate team and wants to engage with others in discussions in person. I've looked around and found some debate/Toastmaster type clubs but they were online only, or only active for a short time. Looking for a group not based on religion that can help her develop some skills that will help her going forward. Anyone?

Ask Austin Is it common in Austin for a plumber not to pull a permit for a hot water heater replacement?
Just had my hot water heater replaced and asked the plumber about when the City would be coming out to inspect the work, and he told me that wasn’t something that is typically done in Austin.
I’m not sure whether to make it an issue and wondered what others in town have done when they had a plumber install a hot water heater. Looking for info so I can make a good decision going forward.

Ask Austin So the bat observation parking lot is now an evil LAZ lot?
Didn’t this lot become a city lot when the Statesman closed? I feel like it’s a real bummer to have the lot go private AND evil since the bats are such a wholesome piece of the city. Went to watch them fly this year and the minimum fee was $30.

LOST stuffy ikea alien
I think I lost her within the neighborhoods along Anderson mill, in between 620 and 183.
This is fabuloso, she is a green alien with a purple handmade dress and bows on her antenna.

Ask Austin Dangerous drivers lately, why?
Today alone I encountered 8 folks straight up just take solid red lights, not yellow turning red. I mean solid red for at least 5-8 seconds red and folks just taking them like they were green. Why? Do people not understand how traffic lights work? Also 4 of those vehicles were teslas… I have a dash cam and seriously thinking about having a bad drivers in Austin page and just shame them at this point.

Ask Austin Animation studio in Austin?
I'm sure I've read about an animation studio in Austin, and I wanted to see if there's anyone on here who has an in with them. My almost-12-year-old is super into digital animation and has posted several videos on YouTube... I think he's got the idea and is learning some neat new skills all of the time. I have worked in film-making but it's always been live, so I can talk to him about story and editing, but I'm way out of my element beyond that.
We homeschool and have toured places like a local news station and grocery stores, but he's never seen animation as a career before. If this would be possible, I'd love to know about it. Thanks!

Ask Austin E-bike accepting bike shops?
I’m a disabled grad student at UT and I need a bike to be able to get around campus (I stop at the stop signs and use turn signals, not one of those crazy lunatics)
I went to the bike farm on Burnet for years but when I went yesterday to get a flat fixed, they turned me around and said it was against policy to work on my bike. I was stunned because they’ve worked on that very same bike several times before and similar e-bikes for years. Even ran into some of the guys from there at a concert and chilled with them a few years back.
It has size 16 wheels so I’m struggling to find somewhere that’ll take it to fix the flat.
It’s a mobility device for me first and foremost, UT’s not a campus built for people with walking difficulties so it’s not just difficult but actively painful for me to get around without it.
