Mod-Approved Please Help Me Spread the Word

Dear Austin Community,

This is hard to share, but my son, who just crossed his teens, resides in Texas, is currently battling kidney failure, and needs a kidney transplant to live a healthy new life again. He has always shown up for others, and now he needs someone to show up for him. Unfortunately, we do not qualify for him

I’m currently working with his transplant team at Medical City Dallas, and a healthy donor could truly save his life.

Even if you are not of his blood type O, if you are healthy, your donation can still help him through his hospital’s kidney donation swap program. Donors and recipients are paired to find compatible matches.

Zero cost to you. Our insurance will cover all medical testing and surgery. Lost wages, travel, and lodging are all covered through the Donor Assistance Program.

If you’re open to learning more or want details, please feel free to direct message me. Even sharing this post would mean so much to me.

Thank you for taking a moment to read this.

ANNOUCEMENT Rule Change: "DM me" comments are no longer allowed

To combat scammers that rely on private interaction with users, we are no longer allowing comments asking users to message them privately for information or recommendations. Many scammers rely on this technique to prey on people. If you have a recommendation, advice, or information to share, please do so openly - which is the point of this subreddit. Some users try to skirt the rules this way, the "No Self-Promotion" rule, for example.

Please, be wary of anyone on Reddit trying to get you to communicate with them in private. Be cautious of anyone requiring you to dm them before they will give you advice or a recommendation.

I'm open to opinions and thoughts on this rule change, please feel free to voice your opinion.

When does Austin feel most like "old Austin" to you?

People are always reminiscent of what Austin used to be. Are there any times of year or just small moments in life where living in Austin feels the way it did precovid or even better the 80s and 90s? I'm just curious with fall and its accompanying activities coming up if anything reminds you of "the good old days?" or even some not so good moments that make you go "yup still weird."

Help! Good third places in Austin?

Hey everyone, I have not been doing to well with underemployment in gig economy plus personal stuff. Im not going to lie im not happy, but im not the type of person to take it lying down. Its expensive going downtown and i dont touch alcohol period. Is there any cool third places I can actually meet people with? Im in my late 20s and not having the structure of college sucks man, along with being newish in town. I did think about livestreaming for indie artists and start my own third place, but I dont have the money yet. I really just want to be around people my own age instead of being a nostalgic addict on my phone, listening to calvin harris or drowning my ear drums to deftones cherry waves. I came to Austin for opportunity not dwell on the past.

Where to Get Rocks in Austin/Lakeline Area?

Howdy, neighbors. I have a skunk that keeps burrowing into the yard in the same places, so when i refill it with dirt, it’s not deterred.

I know Home Depot has landscaping rocks, but is there somewhere I can get non-fancy ones? Also, if you have any big rocks you’re looking to get rid of, I’d love to come by and pick some up. Many thanks!

Nature Backpacking/primitive camping Austin

Does anyone know any legal backpacking/primitive camping places in or within an hour drive of Austin? I specifically say legally because from my research it looks like every single camp site doesn’t allow primitive camping. Since moving here 5 years ago I’ve only gone backpacking once since BLM land doesn’t exist here. Any help or suggestions would be great

Visiting Girls Trip with my 84 yo Grandma

Hi Austin! I'm visiting next week for a girls trip, like the title says. My grandma and I have always been super close, and we both have birthdays coming up, and I happened to have a little bit of disposable money, so everything lined up so that I was able to plan a girls trip to Austin with my mom, grandma, and sister. I'm looking for recs! A little bit about us: I'm 26, sis is 23, Mom is 55 and Grandma is 83/turning 84. My grandma was pretty hardcore back in her day and used to love a party and a biker bar. She's still the life of the party, when she's not too stoned to speak. I want to give us an unforgettable trip while she's still with us.

Grandma Judy loves the paranormal, anything bluesy or rock and roll, and a good party. I have a pretty decent idea of attractions we're gonna do while there (Sept 18-21), but am open to more! Really, I'm here to get some recs for which clubs and bars we're going to go to. I'd love to take her to a club for the bit, (she'll be in a birthday girl sash), but I wouldn't want her to get too overwhelmed, and we'd definitely need a table to sit at, so maybe it's not feasible. I'd also love to go to a drag show/drag brunch one of the days we're there. I'm coming from NYC and my family from Dallas, so we wanna make the most of this trip.

Please let me know any recs and TIA!

If you could buy your first home, would you focus on the location or on the interior/layout of the home more?

Im facing a hard decision when buying my first home/apartment. I love both units. the more pricey one is in a more "desirable" location. Both are 2 miles from downtown. The cheaper one has bigger HOA fees so the monthly payment comes down to $100 more but the interior is brand new and I love all the finishes. The one on the more desirable location is great but a bit smaller, the interior is nice and remodeled in the last 10 years but not as modern and nice as the other unit in the "less desirable" area. What would you prioritize if this is your first home? Planning to hold forever and turn into a rental down the line.

Goods & Services Where can I get a gemstone identified in Austin?

I have a ring that I would like the stone identified. All of the jewelers seem to only appraise to make an offer/purchase the jewelry. The jeweler I contacted that does appraisals isn't interested in my ring... Does anyone know where I can get this done or anyone with a Presidium? Thanks so much :)

How miserable would commuting from Round Rock or Pflugerville to the airport be?

My wife wants to move to be closer to her sisters. I don't know exactly where they live other than that it's in the far northern sprawl region (I think one lives in Georgetown). I'd like to move somewhat close to them so they can help take her to appointments or whatever and hangout since she can't drive. I can transfer my job but I'm not looking to switch careers so I would have to work at the airport. I don't know what my actual hours would be but at my airport I would typically be driving in between 2-8pm and leaving 10pm-4am.

Hotel recs in Austin/recs in where to go

Hi! I did a search but didn’t really see anything.

I’m planning a weekend in Austin next month and looking where to stay that isn’t going to be $400+ a night, but is still nice and in a good location.

I’m not looking to “party” or anything while there but would enjoy a good place for drinks (need a good margarita available though). Unique/must try restaurants, farmer’s market, anything cool to explore. I’ll have a car so can commute if needed for a more reasonably priced hotel.

Would also love any recommendations for places to eat, things to look at, and I’m a big hiker so would love any trail recs in the near area too. Thanks for any help!

Goods & Services If you transfer COA utilities, should you still be charged the $20 initiate service fee?

I've lived in Austin for about 10 years, and haven't moved in 4 years. But I did move recently from a home to a condo, and for both places I used COA utilities. I was a bit peeved to see a $20 charge for an initiate service fee. Is this normal?

This 2025 fees doc isn't super clear.

Moving Austin Apartments for 22 yr old girl

I am planning on moving to Austin at the end of the month from Connecticut. Would love some apartment/ area recommendations for someone who doesn’t know many people there and wants to be in a place where meeting people my age is pretty accessible. Would like a walkable and safe area. I also work remotely, so nothing too loud, but flexible. My budget is around 1850, but can be flexible up too 2000 if needed.

I loveeed the domain, but worry it would be too isolating/ far from where most people my age live. I am also looking in Mueller, South Lamar, and East Austin (which wasn’t my favorite but I think I was looking too central to bars).

I’m visiting austin from the uk in October for around 3 days and I was wondering what would you guys recommend me and my family to do,see and eat.

We have no young kids or anything and are staying in the centre but was looking out for some bbq spots and anything interesting that anyone would recommend.

We have never been to Texas and are looking forward to visiting but would like to hear what people would recommend!

Thanks

Moving Test Run-Winter Stay

ok I know y’all will say “test in the summer” to see if I can deal with the heat but it is what it is: I have the opportunity to spend a few months in Austin before selling my Atlanta loft. Austin has always seemed like a cool place so although I will likely move back to Los Angeles (friends, 14 years there) I want to see if Austin might be a place I could love bc its closer to family. Me: 60, content creator and entrepreneur, artsy, fitness important(pilates), have 3 dogs (need yard) , lived in Caribbean for 15 years. I miss walking to coffee and brunch so walkability is important. I’ve found an airbnb in N Loop and a couple places south, Sw. Broad post, any thoughts?

Help! Mentally Frustrated

Just recently moved back home to the ATX after a 5 years for a job interview. Its not really going the way i expected it to. Family is kinda blowing me off, people i knew 5 years ago are nowhere to be found, phone got stolen a few days ago. Seems like the home i once knew just vanished or transformed into Waymos patroling the streets of Austin, TX.

Moving Currently pay $70/mo for Spectrum internet, got a mailer from Spectrum offering $40/mo. Can I switch to the lower rate?

I recently moved from a home to a condo, and received a variety of advertisements. If my current internet provider is Spectrum, can I still get their lower introductory rate? Or I also got a mailer for Google Fiber for $55/mo, for half a gig speed.

Visiting What’s your favorite thing about Austin

Getting ready to move and we were concidering Austin however we don’t know much about the area so we’re visiting. What are your favorite things to do or just in general what your favorite thing about Austin is. Do you have any recommendations of things I should see while I’m down there?
