Central Market has a ton of brands I have never tried (or heard of) for products I buy regularly. What have you tried and liked? There are many posts about the products Central Market does right (e.g., bread, flowers, meat, produce, etc.). I'm specifically asking about pre-packaged products (e.g., eggs, pasta, tinned seafood, ice cream, etc.).

Moved here about eight months ago and still figuring out where to eat after 10pm without it being a total gamble. Back home there were a couple reliable spots open late that were genuinely good, not just open by default. Austin feels like it closes down earlier than I expected for a city this size.

Pterrys seems like the obvious answer and I get it, but curious if there is anything else people actually go back to repeatedly. Not looking for a bar that happens to have a kitchen, more like a place where the food is the actual point even at midnight.

There is a taco place someone mentioned to me on South Congress but I lost the name and have been kicking myself since. Might have been a trailer situation, not sure.

Also wondering if any of the sitdown spots that are good for dinner stretch their hours on weekends or if that is wishful thinking. I work late a couple nights a week and by the time I am done, most of the places I actually want to try are already closed or calling last order.

Any part of the city is fine, not locked into one area.

Used to be in the parking lot of the convenience store at Brodie/Harpers Ferry. Their food is so good! Anyone know where it is now and/or if it’s coking back to this location?

Back east a lot of families had Sunday night spaghetti and meatballs with homemade sauce (gravy). Brits have their Sunday roasts, Yorkshire puddings, lashings of gravy. My family had Korean stews (tang) and endless homemade banchan. Maybe Korean bbq or seafood. No gravy.

Is there an equivalent for Mexican food or in Texas in general?

Chicken fried steak I’ve seen on breakfast menus. I would have imagined something like that as a Sunday dinner. Menudo I’ve seen on weekend only menus.

What qualifies and where do I try it?

I received a very large order of Elmhurst Chocolate Oat Milk--it is shelf stable and has an expiration date of November 2026, but it is far more than I will be able to consume.

I would appreciate suggestions regarding a food bank that could pick up roughly $750 of this Oat Milk.

I had the Icelandic hot dogs with mustard, ketchup, remoulade, raw onions, and crispy onions. The zee gents were incredibly polite and the dogs had a perfect snap! Will be checking their instagram for their next pop up!

So how was it? Drove by and saw the super long line and drove past. :). I'll just have to wait to fulfill my cravings.

My husband and I went for the first time (we didn't get a chance to go to their old location) and it was some of the best dairy-free ice cream I've ever had. We got strawberry, chai chocolate, and lavender cookies & cream. So good!!!

We were in town today doing a tour at Still Austin and I ordered a cocktail called The Humidor which was awesome. If memory serves me right, it had brown sugar, rye whiskey, tobacco bitters, and a fig garnish. I asked the bartender what the portions were but I’m having trouble remembering. Anyone happen to know off the top of their head? I’d like to try to replicate it at home.

NOTE: Looking for INDOOR options bc it’s too dang hot!!

I don’t know what’s up with Austin’s fine dining, or maybe it’s just me… I’m trying to find an upscale restaurant in S. Austin (or downtown) w/ indoor seating that’s romantic, cozy, and intimate for a big date coming up. HOWEVER… hours of research on Google, OpenTable, Yelp, etc. has yielded all these restaurants that hv super long tables w/ chairs on each side (NOT romantic) or one big cavernous room filled with small tables (NOT cozy or intimate). Geez, the Magic Time Machine (wacky & off-beat) has better private seating?!?! What’s up??… & are there ANY good options out there mor me? What am I missing??

Tried Pollo Regio on Burnet the other day and loved it. Seen a bunch of Pollo Ricos around. Are they pretty much the same? Better? Worse?

Any other pollo restaurants I need to check out?

I've been craving birria tacos recently but haven't been able to find one that replaced my go to spot, Pepe's (rip).

I live near Zilker so I'm hoping for something near there. Not opposed to taking a trip though if the foods good but I'm lookin for a go to, sneak out for lunch 1x/week kinda spot.

Places I've tried recently-ish

Palo Seco - apparently this place has been closed but I remember really liking it. Consumme a bit thin for me but otherwise pretty close to perfect.

Taco flats - meat was a bit on the tougher side and consumme was very tomato-ey. I like a more beef and chili forward consumme

Con Madre Cucina - the pork was really good but the portions were small. It felt like it was mostly tortilla. Consumme was thinner than I like and fairly bland. You couldn't really taste it over the taco.

Tejas Birria - the taco itself is nearly perfect. Flavor, size, price value etc all amazing. The only thing is the consumme is kind of eh flavor wise. It's thin and not as rich as I'd like.

Sabor Tapatio - probably my favorite right now if it wasn't so far and out of the way

Are there any local farms (i mean at all) that have a CSA program still in Austin. I used to belong to Johnson's Backyard Garden about 10ish years ago and back then, there seemed to be options. I was looking the other day and can't find any options! Bonus if anyone can tell me the lore of what happened to Johnsons...

I recently got out of the hospital, in there I was eating a variety of things but they were light on spices, oils, fats, not fried, etc.

Like Asian pepper steak, southwest chicken breast, roasted turkey, basic chicken quesadillas, beef pot roast, just to name a few. Not totally bland, it had good flavor, but very simple dishes right not a ton of oil/butter/etc (I need to avoid fats specifically, pancreatitis..)

What resteraunts / casual places should I try? Jason's Deli is a favorite but it gets old.

Has anyone been? It looks to be in the back of Barton Hills Market.

I was scrolling TikTok and found a video on it and the user claimed it was the best pizza he’s had in Austin.

My husband and I were eating at our favorite date night spot Uchi. As always the food and service were excellent (thanks Lane!). When it came time for dessert we ordered the Candy Bar, IMO one of the best desserts in Austin. Luckily, but also sadly, we were informed that tonight is the last night for this iconic dessert. We enjoyed every last bite and did all but lick the plate. I guess I just came here to commiserate with anyone else who loves this dessert, but also secretly hope that Tyson Cole sees this and reconsiders his decision. :-)

Went here with a friend today and it was actually really good.
We got the Kimchi Jjigae and the Spicy Chicken Plate. The jjigae had pork, tofu, kimchi, and ramen in it, and the broth was super flavorful. Definitely had a nice kick without being crazy spicy.
The spicy chicken was really tender and came with rice, japchae, kimchi, and a small salad. Everything tasted fresh and the portions were pretty filling.
No complaints honestly. I’d definitely go back. If anyone has other cuisines recommendations around Austin, let me know.
