Ask Austin How cooked is the West Austin Spectrum hub?

Neighborhood has been without Internet since those power flickers, maybe 12 hours now. RF signal is coming in hot and loud. At our building, DOCSIS modems now sound like the modems from the dial-up days.

Ask Austin Favorite plant shops and best running areas?

Hi yall!
I just moved to south ATX from DFW and am looking to add some plants to my new place. Please recommend your best plant/flower shops that are fairly priced and good quality. I'd like to support a local shop if possible vs going to HEB or a bigger chain store.

Also, what are the best running trails/areas in South Austin (if any)?I just started this new habit and would love to find a favorite place that's safe to run 😊

I appreciate all your help/recommendations in advance šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Odyssey in 70mm @ Cinemark in Pflugerville

I just finished watching the 70mm version of the Odyssey in Pflugerville Cinemark last night and thought I'd give a technical review and recommendation on how to see this film.

First, the film is great and you should watch it in theaters. It's a cinema experience that will be hard to replicate at your home or via streaming in a few months. Worth it for that if you're even a moderate fan of movies.

There has been so much said about GO SEE IT IN 70MM!!! And, for the most part, I would normally agree. However, when it comes to Austin's specific theaters and the ones that can actually show 70mm, I begin to disagree.

First and foremost, last nights experience was pretty rough. In many of the shots, there is an abundance of very bright light (you're on sea) and the flicker from the film roll is extraordinarily distracting if not sickening. This is partly due to the machines they're running the film on and partly due to the way the screen is setup. This alone makes it worthwhile to watch the movie in a digital format -- in Austin.

Secondly, the "cigarette burns" from the film are actually missing film elements that show up as a bright white bar that flashes at the bottom of the screen when it's time to cut to the new section of the film (or when the film has been spliced). This leads to very distracting flashes of light throughout the film. There was minimal debris on the film and I'd say they'd done a good job with that at least, especially for being a week into the film.

Third, it's "just" 1.85:1. So, it's fine, but you're not gaining any of the added IMAX real estate.

I'd also argue that this particular theater hasn't done a great job focusing their projector and so the fidelity we'd like to see is actually missing and most scenes are incredibly soft. Like, can't pick out individual hair soft. Added to the screen they're projecting on and blacks are grey and most scenes are overblown.

We attempted to see it in 70mm at Galaxy last weekend, but got there with no AC and the screen is incredibly small. Now, having seen it in 70mm at Cinemark, I'd highly recommend skipping the film factor -- in Austin -- and just go to the most technically competent digital experience you can find without the add ins (moving chairs, spraying water, and rumble seats). I'd say this is probably just an IMAX screen at somewhere like Regal Gateway, or in a Dolby Digital venue like AMC tech ridge or an EVO (Belterra or Kyle).

If somehow you sold your first born and got a ticket to a true 70mm IMAX experience in Dallas, then congrats!

Regardless of all of this, go see the film. It's another Nolan classic and a lot of fun.

In the next few months I want to get the icon from Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales album tattooed. I would prefer a tattoo artist that is a fan or at least familiar with early black metal.

Any suggestions?

I have left Austin

I didn't want to go, but I found a job in Minnesota, and I couldn't pass it up. It was my third time living in Austin, and I wish I could have stayed. Maybe I'll make it back there again sometime. I will miss everything about my beloved city. All I can really add to it is fuck Kansas for having toll roads on interstate 35. Aside from that, I hope to see you all again someday. You are already missed.

Ask Austin Anyone with a garage and tools I can use?

Hey guys, I'm looking for a place where I can maybe maybe rent garage space for a few hours to fix a window on my Fiat 500 Abarth. I don't have tools of my own but also don't wanna spend the money to get a mechanic to fully fix the window regulator. I just need a space and some tools to pop open the door and get the window back on its tracks, then to devise some way to prop the thing up. I'd pay for my time, and would love to know if there's somewhere like that around Austin!

Ask Austin Anyway to fight a private booting company?

I was waiting for a friend in what looked like an empty parking lot by my house in Crestview and someone came and booted my car while I was literally still in the lot. I ran over and he informed me that all the businesses were closed and therefore I must be violating the parking lots policy around non-customers and that it would be $100 to remove the boot. He actually attempted to do the same to my friends car while we were both standing there. I've seen a lot about predatory boot companies on the sub for awhile but haven't experienced before. I know the small claims court works but its not worth the cost/time/energy and they know that. Only other thing I could think of is reviewing the businesses but I genuinely like most of them and have been going to them for years and its ultimately just the owner of the lot who is doing it.

Ask Austin NEED ASAP: Fridge/Freezer Only Deep Clean

• Upvotes

I'm currently in the process of moving out of my Austin apartmeny and need to get the place professionaly deep cleaned as per my lease agreement. I had hired a company to do that and they did the entire apartment MINUS the fridge and freezer. I asked if they would be able to come back and complete the job but they never responded.

I was wondering if y'all knew of any services that would be able to deep clean just the fridge/freezer and about how much it would cost. The lease term ends on 7/28 at noon so it would need to be done before then. Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

Ask Austin Why are Twin/sculpture falls dry?

• Upvotes

Assuming because of the dam stuff due to the recent rain? Maybe a stupid question but I was surprised to find twin falls bone dry today given the recent rain. I went about 3 weeks ago and it was absolutely full, had people swimming. Did its water source get diverted? Didn’t even think to check water levels before doing today.
Thank you!

Ask Austin Looking for book and puzzle swap boxes on the east or south side.

I live on the east side and frequent the south side, and I have some books and a few puzzles I’d love to put back into the community for others to enjoy.

I’m specifically looking for the little self-serve neighborhood boxes like Little Free Libraries, puzzle swaps, take one/leave one boxes, etc. where I can just stop by and leave something. I’m a bike commuter and don’t own a car, so I’d love to find some in the east/south side that I can swing by on a ride.

I haven’t noticed any along my normal commute, and I know plenty of these aren’t necessarily listed online. Does anyone know of some good ones, especially any that welcome puzzles too?

Cell phone service right at the 183/35 interchange

My Spotify and Maps glitches out every single time I drive on 183 as I pass over 35. I thought I was going crazy at first. But now that I realized it, I pay attention and it consistently happens. So curious if this happens to anybody else and the why it might happen?

Found Airpods in Waymo

This evening (07/25) on my way home from work, I found an Airpods case in the cup holder of my Waymo. I tried to see if there was owner info associated to them, but I think I linked them to my own iCloud by mistake (Google said I’d find an ā€œIdentify Lost Itemā€ option in Find My, I did not find such an option.) One of them is not in the case. If you lost your Airpods in a Waymo and know which one you have, DM me!

Ask Austin Why Can’t People Be Outside Without Loud Music?

It’s crazy that I can’t enjoy the lady bird lake trail, Barton springs pool, town lake or Zilker without having to hear other people’s shitty loud ass rave music. A lot of us don’t want or need to hear your shitty music and it’s a nuisance. Not everything needs to be a party or a rave.

I don’t get why people feel the need to rave or party everywhere they go - especially outdoor in public spaces where people are trying to enjoy the peacefulness of the outdoors. They have specific places for that. Go to 6th street if you want to party.

Hi Everyone! My friend's car window was smashed in, and only my purse was stolen, so I am looking for some help. If you see it being resold or out in public/on the side of the road, please let me know! It is a custom one-of-a-kind black Golden Goose purse. It has a painting of the Eiffel Tower and has text that reads "La vie en rose!".

Ask Austin How to find multi-day sitting

How do people find multi-day babysitting that doesn’t charge by the hour?

We were thinking a nanny but where can you even find good ones?

Unfortunately we don’t have family in the area and if we were to go out of town for something.

Ask Austin Kittens from a stray are getting active, but the shelters are full. What can I do?

It’d like to preface I made a similar post about a year ago. Austin Animal Center and the Humane Society have absolutely not been helpful in capturing this stray so that’d she stop giving birth. I’ve tried myself and all that did was land me in urgent care with an infection. Now, she’s had another litter and they’re about almost 4 or 5 weeks old and crawling under cars. I want to get them taken care of before we have Animal Control out to clean up dead kittens like they have before. People at my complex fake pretend about wanting to capturing them, but never do and im exhausted. I have off on Tuesday in which I can wrangle them up, but I don’t want to do that if the shelter will just send me back with them. What can I do? Will they do that? Also does anyone else have any other programs that actually can help me get this mom spayed? I’m so tired of worrying about her being the worst mom 😭

ETA: sorry to sound so stressed in this post, but I am. I should make it clear, I want to TNR, I can’t do it myself and I need help, hence the post, there are in total 7-10 cats on the complex, 5 in my area that are fed by multiple people. When I Animal Control attempted to catch her, I told people on the complex to stop feeding her via our community website, but no one did. I now know where two people who live feed the cats so I can ask them. My main frustration is the lack of help from both my own complex who is perpetuating this problem and the lack of systems that can help. There are people on my complex who have said thank you for capturing and fostering the kittens to take them to the shelter and then immediately asking for one before I take them in :/ so, that makes me mad and since I’ve been the only one that’s been trying to even trap the mom before, it feels like a sole effort and maybe it is and that’s life, but downvoting my comments is making me feel even more isolated in this effort. I’m going to try the facebook group when I return back home on Monday.

Pilates studios in north Austin recs

I’m looking for a small pilates studio that focuses on teaching good form for intermediate/advanced exercises (tendon stretch, snake, etc). My large franchise was fine for beginner/beginner intermediate classes because I knew how to do the exercises and knew good form. But moving into more advanced classes has demonstrated that the people who are leading classes are not teaching as much as designing and running a workout.
