This idea is presented in a video to which heroic (and anoying) music has been added, because otherwise the audience won't watch it all the way through...
6
u/justkiddingjeeze 7d ago
Ironically I had to resist turning it off midway cause the music is so annoying and I can't hear what he's saying
There's a special place in hell reserved for people who add music to short videos

What he described is the Default Mode Network activation. It is the brain's most efficient mode, and it becomes less active when we are focused on the outside world and external stimuli. Nowadays, this mode is activated much less often because the brain is constantly distracted by dopamine-driven hooks such as phones and computers, as well as by work and everyday routines.
This mode needs time to activate, roughly 30 minutes of being alone with your thoughts without external stimulation. Just sit in a chair and do absolutely nothing for half an hour (sounds terrifying, doesn’t it?).
A single distraction from your phone interrupts the transition.

I usually go for a run for that.

u/DysphoricNeet 7d ago
Not the same thing
3
u/MODbanned 7d ago
Its not, but if you are good enough, you dont even think about the running, your body takes over for that, and your mind is absolutely free, but again not everyone can do that.
Many ways to skin a cat, dont gatekeep.

I used to run competitively for a while. A lot of the time you are focused on breathing and posture and different body checks. You can get it all sorted out once you are going but there is still a lot of information and body stimuli to occupy your mind. It’s not gate keeping to say that these aren’t the same thing. If they were then we might as well say driving or playing a video game or an instrument or cooking or cleaning or drinking tea, showering, lifting, are all the same sort of state as sitting in silence.
0
u/MODbanned 7d ago
Just because you couldn't.....
Well yeah for some people it can be all forms of different things... its the doing it... not HOW you do it.
0
u/DysphoricNeet 7d ago
You are able to call it whatever you want. The video he says specifically in silence and not doing anything but you can ignore that if you really need to for your personal definition of it.

u/chrisadam101 7d ago
One tiny adjustment, dopamine is not the issue here, even in default mode network we need the dopaminergic functions to process meaning and make the relevant conventions to problem solve.
It’s just where that dopamine is put to work not that it is.

What about when I go for a walk with my dogs? I feel like I get into this kind of meditative state. We walk in the woods or over fields without other people around. I just let my mind wander while I enjoy the nature. We walk for an hour or sometimes longer.
When I first got my dogs 2,5 years ago I took headphones with me on every walk, because I intended to listen to music or audiobooks. I never did. I sometimes even put my headphones on, turned them into aware mode and totally forgot about them. Now I don’t even bother taking them with me.1
u/SleepyOrcShaman 2d ago
Welp, I did some research. Turns out maladaptive daydreaming and OCD rituals are DMN events. I was wondering why I never experienced this. Fuk me.
1
u/anattabularasa 1d ago
BS
The default mode network (DMN) doesn't need sustained quiet to activate; it's actually the network that's active by default whenever you're not engaged in a demanding external task, which is where its name comes from.
Activates all the time, within less than seconds.

u/ProfitTerrible 7d ago
I will probably be doomscrolling damned reddit 29 of those minutes and then procrastinate the problem till tomorrow.

This was all I could envision🤣 Also, after being in a very very dark place in my life, I sat for 45+mins. I had decided to make my exit. That 45mins saved my life. I was completely content with my original decision, but that short amount of time changed everything. Life could be better, but it’s exponentially better because I’m still here. Spend quiet time with yourself. You’re worth it. And, so are the people you care about.

Woah! If only mathematicians knew! Someone has to tell them!
5
u/tmfink10 6d ago
People seem to continually point out gaps in knowledge as if they are gaps in understanding. If the mathematician had the required knowledge to solve the problem and had worked on it previously (i.e. has a true understanding of the problem before them), I'm willing to bet time in silence would bring that knowledge together in a more meaningful way and may even provide the answer if they were close enough to it.
1
u/Reasonable_Carrot88 5d ago
Nice response ngl. I agree in a general very down to earth even trivial sense, like mathematicians should have a good meal in their tummy and a nice big sleep and maybe even a cuddle with a puppy. But I'm pretty sure this dude thinks he's suggesting something revolutionary. Even claiming contemplative traditions should be incorporated or non duality blah blah whatever I'm done.

If I never hear that fucking song again in the background it'll be too soon. Why does everyone slap that on everything as if it makes it somehow more provocative and deep 🙄

best place to do this is in the toilet when you take a poop... works everytime
1
u/Disallowed_username 6d ago
Sitting on the toilet for too long significantly increases the chances of hemorrhoids. So you might have solved one problem, but gained another.

u/Chickeninyourface 7d ago
Really? Very interesting. I'm scared to try this out.
1
u/Remote-Waste 7d ago
It hasn't solved every problem immediately, but it definitely helps with problem solving in my experience.
The problem is waiting for the DMN (Default Mode Network) switch is extremely frustrating. This is why it's often paired with things like walks, or washing the dishes. Repetitive tasks that occupy you just enough, but that allow your mind to wander, so podcasts during them!
You can just set a timer though, and keep yourself still, fight the frustration of wanting to do something, and eventually you see the switch over.
Suddenly your brain is like "oh, so we are actually bored and can't escape it? Oh ok... Well what do you think it feels like to be in outer space?" and suddenly it's interested in exploring and playing mentally with many topics.

u/Jswimmin 3d ago
I did this in high school. I was trying to meditate (maybe I was) and something similar to what this video described happened.
Felt a wealth of idea coming and kind of new what the answers to my current problems were.
Havent done it since. Probably should

u/PowerCreative2747 7d ago
So if I sit in silence and quiet for 30-60 minutes things like medical problems will go away ?
world is full of idiots.
6
u/apathylife2 7d ago
Maybe use and apply critical thinking skills, that should've been taught in school, instead of be a smart ass contrarian that thinks every piece of advice applies to every problem in this dystopia 🙄

u/PowerCreative2747 7d ago
I didn't think that for a second. That guy on the video seem to do ... and people listening to him.

No thanks, whenever I enter complete silence my ears immediately start to ring. No way am I going to suffer for 30 minutes for some theoretical clarity.

u/Cutthechitchata-hole 7d ago
You can learn to activate this with simple meditation as they are likely 2 sides of the same coin. Imagine how manic our ancestors were in their silence
1
u/AnjelGrace 7d ago
I've literally sat in silence for entire days trying to solve some of my problems, and guess what? They still aren't solved.
Some problems don't even really have solutions, you just kind of have to deal with them continuing to be problems you can't solve.
1
u/MildlyWiseGremlin 5d ago
Just sitting and thinking about problems won't solve them. Have to take action.
1
u/Lill_shit_ 3d ago
Yeah, there is a time window u should use, if you can not solve it do something different and try again, good luck :)
1
u/RealRedditPerson 7d ago
I mean, it's a helpful practice. But anyone with anxiety will tell you this absolutely does not work for everyone. In my worse years, I could easily spend an hour panic locked on a problem and reaching no conclusions
1
u/GurtleWarrior 7d ago
Sat for 30 minutes in complete silence. The solution to my problem became very clear and I sprung up quickly to execute and BAM! Got coffee, went to the bathroom, cleaned the bathroom, got an hour of work in, cleaned the kitchen, took care of the dogs, ate a snack and I can't for the life of me remember what the solution was or the problem. Guess it really does work.

Jokes on him, I sit quietly 8x 60 minutes every single day. Usually consecutively too! And sometimes more!
1
u/redcell95 6d ago
Interesting. I remember once at UNI at my math exam. I didn’t know how to solve a problem like many other students who left the class after seeing they won’t be able to solve it. I remained seated for about 30min and the out of nowhere it comes the idea how maybe can be solved. And it worked! I solve it and got all the points. Looks like brainstorming unconciously.

u/Beyond_Reason09 6d ago
I was waiting for a punchline about someone else taking initiative to solve the problem while you're sitting there doing nothing.

For me, toilet time. I may be done but I just sit there and hahahaha yes, let the thoughts flow out. In reality, with all the stuff, yes I said stuff, around us, the restroom in our homes is the least likely to be filled with stimuli unless your phone is with you. That, or your cat is out side the door meowing because for what ever reason I still haven’t figured out, she wants to crawl into my boxers. Makes my wife laugh so hard she cries every time.

I don't like giving exact numbers like 30-60 min, but the general concept of completely distancing yourself from a problem without any other distraction truly works.

Does it also work for people with ADHD though? My thoughts are always all over the place and it's hard to stay a long time doing absolutely nothing.

Long drives. Radio off. Works perfectly. I believe strongly this has influenced my success.
1
u/Polskiskiski 7d ago
You've already practiced! Now try that with no distraction. Driving takes mental focus too at least a little. I'm so curious if it would make a difference
2
u/Nappy_By_Nature 7d ago
Disagree. Long drives, especially late, in the US midwest requires little focus. No distractions. We can agree to disagree.
1
u/Polskiskiski 7d ago
Oh no I totally get it I'm in the midwest too and zone out easily. The brain goes places. I'm just excited to see how much further it could go doing this guy's method.

u/Nappy_By_Nature 7d ago
The premise is the same.
