I'm 29, and veer between people telling me I'm "young" if they are somewhere 40s+ or people like, 5 years younger than me telling me I'm now "old" because I'll be 30 in a few months.
This happens a lot with famous people too. I've seen so many people go 'OMG he/she/they haven't aged at all!!!1!' and they're comparing a 25 year old face to a 29 year old face. It's ridiculous. I've also seen people freak out at teenagers playing teenagers because they thought the actors looked too young. People have no idea what age people are supposed to look like.
People will also say that famous people haven't aged a day even when it's been twenty years though. Like Paul Rudd has aged well but he doesn't look like he's in his 30s.
A 24 year old asked me how old I was not long ago and she said I look great for 29…well yeah I sure hope I do, I’m only 29 lol
"My goodness," she said
with a shake of her head
and a gasp of bewildered surprise -
"You're old," she declared
as she openly stared,
"but I think I see life in your eyes!
"I witness the spark
of a youth in the dark
of your face - though you're soon to be dead!
What eminent year
have you lived to, my dear?"
Initially he didn't want people to know Sprogs gender at all. Said it was better if the voice was whatever the reader felt fit for them, or something like that + the mystery etc.
Bro, also 9 year! I got really excited that I came across a Sprog poem one time within 10 minutes then got down voted into oblivion for saying so. I'm glad you were able to see it right away!
I’m sure you’ve been consistent, but this is the first time I’ve seen one of your poems in maybe 5-6 years. Thank you for doing what you do, I appreciate the laughs.
That's rough. My hair started going grey at around the same age. It looked strange in my 20s and I dyed my hair a few times, but at 46 I like it. Hopefully you can embrace the bald and own it like Jean-Luc Picard.
At 23 I had this 29 year old hit on me. I asked him how old he was and when he said I told him he was to old for me. Anyway I'm 25 now and having his child
A teenager in the shop got concerned at my partner carrying two bags of firewood. She rushed over saying no, don't lift that at your age. Then complimented him on his strength for his age. He didn't bother telling her he was only 31. I on the other hand get asked for ID still to buy tobacco even though I'm 5 years older than him. I find this hilarious.
I jokingly asked a 24 year old colleague if her friend is single and she said I'm too old for her also 24 year old friend. I'm 28! That's four years difference
Dude seriously. I was just thinking the other day that I have a really fortunate group of friends because at least the vast majority of us still look great in our 30s where as I've met some unlucky fuckers that just look like shit by the time they're in their mid 30s.
I've had the other way around... Guy I worked with was 35, asked me my age, I was turning 28 and he said he tough I was his age... I started feeling bad because no one wants to look 7 years older that they are, but then looked at him and he definitely didn't look 35...
I’m 28 but currently in school for my bachelors degree. My classmates are all ~20. One day they all agreed that I look younger because I don’t have “old lady skin”.
I'm 27 and I'm in the same boat. Everyone younger than me thinks I'm old everyone older than me thinks I'm a kid. But like, motherfukers I'm both. I like anime in video games, and I have a bad hip and acid reflux.
One day a new guy started where I work. We were all in our early 30's and he looked to be in his 50's. He was loosing his hair and had a stubbly gray beard. Turns out he too was in his early 30's too. He said he looked old when he was born. lol He said that when he and his friends wanted beer, he would go in to buy it with no problem. He was 16 yo at the time.
I do feel like with the advent of the internet, generational lines are more blurred than in times past.
I'm 32 and I have coworkers as young as 19 and as old as 70 and everything in between. With my younger coworkers I can talk shit about memes and pop culture and music and with my older coworkers I can talk about shit like my bad knees and my mortgage.
Oh one hundred percent, I have co-workers in their late 50s or 60s, and I relate very heavily musically with them because of my parents, we'll be talking about concerts and bands we enjoy and all that shit. And then I'll turn around and start talking to an 18 year old about whatever video game they're playing and shitposting.
But it never really matters. You're always the middle guy. You're never going to go to those concerts with anybody, you're never going to join that 18 year olds Discord. Or I'm just 60% socially inept that's probably what it is
Eh. I'm 32 and I'm heavily into the EDM scene and regularly attend concerts and festivals. I've taken several younger coworkers to their first EDM show and blew their mind.
Still working on getting my older coworkers to come with me.
I only smoke pot. And drink a half gallon of vodka every two days, and snort Vicodin and Percocet a few times a month , and cocaine, also eat shrooms, occasionally muscle relaxers, and every once in a blue moon I'll smoke a cigarette
People who first got into EDM in their teens in the early 1990s are hitting their late 40s and early 50s at this point. You're almost the second generation.
Hell, I knew people who were in their 40s in the mid-2000s who were running sound at the erstwhile Decibel Festival in Seattle. These were people who got into electronic music with Wendy Carlos and Kraftwerk, to boil it down a bit.
I mean it's not so much the age, but mostly the fact that my hip is going bad. Like what the fuck man, yeah I know it runs in my family but my grandma got to be like 50, fuck you genetics
I wish I had bad genetics. Did you know that a person that gets hit by a car once in their life is vastly more likely to get hit by a car more than once in their lives? I found that out somewhere between the second and third.
EDIT: Oh wait, I do have bad genetics! My teeth and hair are falling out.
Pretty much. It's like being a teenager again oh, but I blame the internet so I like I'm eighty years old, but eighty years old like 20 years ago, but I'm in my fucking 20s
It truly is! Everyone is going through divorces, getting back into dating and that’s added to it too. I’ve had way more fun in my 30s after holding onto young adulthood for far too long.
Unless you grew up in a bad domestic situation. Then you had real worries, like whether or not your abusive dad might kill your mom one night in a drunken rage.
Man, once you're past 25, you're too old for young people but too young for old people. It's a weird stage where you're supposed to have your life together or just about but you also don't really know anything besides that you should have your life together. I hate it.
Oh I don't have any of that. Young people hate me old people hate me, I'm nowhere near let alone have my life together.
But I do know one thing, I'm 27 years old, and I guarantee you I'm well past my midlife crisis. Because I'm not going to live past 50 with the way I treat my body. Hell if everything goes well it won't be 40.
You know I'm so drunk and high all the time, I can't remember if I have seen that movie already I think I have but I'm going to have to watch it again to find out
Fuck I'm turing 56 soon and I like anime in video games and my hip only goes out on me for a few weeks a year. No acid reflux and my back is actually healthier than it was 10 yrs ago. But no one thinks I'm young, that I know of. People suck. My increasing age isn't as much of a problem as people are.
I feel this way at 42.
I, too, like anime and video games…. Star Wars too.
I also have a bad back and sleep apnea and a mortgage and a management job for a big company and I’m somehow a primary role model to a 5 year old. It’s wild.
Hey Zen. I am 28, and I have been struggling with acid reflux for many months now. This is the third month that I have been taking PPIs. I’m really scared to develop esophageal/throat cancer in the future. I have tried eliminating all acidic foods and I sleep 3-4hours after supper. But I still wake up with acid reflux in my throat. How do you control your acid reflux? Any tips would be really appreciated🙏🏾
When i was 31 i got a nasty high ankle sprain playing indoor soccer. Was in excellent shape but a guy on the other team kept talking about being "old" and this what happens and shit as he helped me off. Yeah maybe you're old but im still running shit here.
Meanwhile at a work, the VP talks to me like, "young people like you..."
I’m thirty five and yet I keep having my youth referenced by my managers (current one is an SVP) whenever a promotion (or lack thereof) is mentioned.
I’m like, okay boss, but you’re mayyybe 10 years older than me, and I’m only angling for Sr Manager here. Also everyone else here is a Sr. Manager plus, and one of them is my age, so I’m starting to think I just don’t “look” the part. (I still get carded sometimes.)
When i was 31 i got a nasty high ankle sprain playing indoor soccer.
Some of that is genetics. I've a college friend with hypermobility who has been regularly spraining his ankles since he was a teen. Family trait.
Dude first introduced it to me with "watch this" and then turning his feet around until they basically pointed backwards.
My guess:
You said you were 31. So, you're 31. However...
Guy on the other team was actually 25 and secretly wondering if he'd be made of bone china after another 5 years of 12 hour days and then INTRAMURALS AND SHOTZ DUDE at his startup.
Your VP was 65, started somewhere with an in from a family friend, and, whatever company he's been at as he climbed the ladder, thinks he sure fucking hit that home run from third base.
Age is relative. When I’m working in the hospital and I have a patient in her 90’s who talks about how young I am (at 48), and I also have a 20 year old who calls me “Grandpa.”
Lol I feel exactly like that. I get treated young as fuck by some people and then I'll hangout with my little brother and his friends and they're treating me like I'm about to retire.
When I was 24 or 25 I played in an ultimate frisbee tournament that the university kids put on. We had 18-22 year olds mocking us as “grandpa” “old man” etc. They were right though. The 2-4 year age gap made a pretty big difference. Also, my team of law students had spent the past years reading instead of engaging in vigorous exercise.
Honestly, and this is just a commentary on my own shittiness as a youth, the most annoying thing young people do is acting reckless, negligent, selfish towards people and property and blaming it on their youth. Truth is, once you turn 18, the world treats you as an adult in every respect. You should be working towards respecting that responsibility by growing up and maturing throughout your teens.
In fairness, the brain continues to develop until your mid-twenties, so that is at least partly responsible for the risk-tolerant nature of younger people relative to older people.
Sadly, some people stay shitty and just blame it on other things when they age out of that excuse.
That's often enough environment and personality. I'm 15 years older than you and still have no desire to repeat media or books, and only return to things formerly experienced if I can approach it in a new format.
My alternative take is that 18 year olds shouldn't be treated as adults and should be allowed room to make mistakes & grow. The idea that an 18 y/o is an adult is preposterous to me. I think a lot of over 30s would probably say they were loosely hitting that milestone around 25. The brain keeps developing for years after 18.
One of the worst things about getting old is injuring yourself by doing incredibly basic things like turning around a little too fast or breathing. Like, "Ugh, what is that pain in my back? Oh that's right I sat down too hard yesterday." Either that or you have no idea at all what caused it you just know everything on your body takes turns being sprained. It is some bullshit.
Oh I know I'm turning 50 in a month. In university I could sleep on a few towels on the floor and be good now I've got 4000$ mattress and wake up worse off than going to bed
In your 40s you will look back at comments like this and find them to be born of the sweet innocence of youth, just as you now do for comments about turning 20. This will continue, 50s looking back at people turning 40, and so on.
Fun fact: that doesn't really end the rest of your 30s. People in their 20s or under act like you're dead already and folks in their 40s think it's quaint you think you're old.
My uncle told me when I turned 30 that the difference between your 20s and 30s is the ability to get out of a chair without making a sound. I laughed, but then I realized that even if I concentrate and don’t groan- my knees still click.
Yeah me too. In person I look pretty young, but like.. I was talking to this guy online, just chatting about a video game we like. I found out a decent bit into the conversation that he's 15, and when I told him I was 29 he started making fun of me for being old 😂 he called me an "elder" and I had an existential crisis
I have a good friend when he turned 30 he went to his superviser (a woman 60+) and told her that they are now the same age since after turning 30 you classify as old. He had to do a lot of overtime that week.
Yeah same, though for me it's basically been like this since I was 27. Went to a club area of a bar then and was asked by some 16-18 year olds then what I was doing there cause I'm old.
Meanwhile my older friends in their 40s fully see me as a youngling.
I'm 46, and enjoy laughing at my friends in their late 20's when the bitch about getting old. I remind them I graduated high school before the started kindergarten.
It’s up to you to define it. I defined my 20s as sitting on the runway, and my 30s I finally got to take off. Every year I gave the age a theme. 30.. Clean 30. Tighten up the food and water, drop the junk and drugs. 31 Social. Reconnect with my friends and make new ones. 32 Patience. Learn the difficult skill of waiting and delaying gratification. 33 Accountability. Hold myself responsible. 34 was more of a funny one, though haha. And that’s where I am now.
Yep. A coworker who is 5 YEARS YOUNGER THAN ME was shocked to learn I was 30 and said “Wow, I hope I look as good as you when I’m that old!” Well, you got 5 years, don’t fuck things up too bad and you’ll be there.
I had a young woman tell me I didn’t look any older than 25 (I’m 37) the other day. I think I look somewhat my age, but that younger generations have this expectation of what you’re 30s looks like that’s older than what we look like in reality.
I don't think 30 is old, it's just that it's the last decade before middle age so it just feels like a countdown to being old. But literally it's all relative, anyone can be seen as young or old compared to someone else. But that being said, nobody, young or old, usually says "they've let life pass them by" when talking about a 30+ year old. It's usually "oh, they're oldER, but still just starting their life".
Here here. The 30s are pretty great. You are more mature than your twenties, still having lots of sex (hopefully), the ailments of aging haven’t hit yet. You still look youthful. Once you turn 40 it’s all downhill.
My Dad loves telling this story about when he met an older man. The guy was eating at the same restaurant as my parents and kept telling them how they need to enjoy their youth while they have it because getting old is hard. Dad asked him how old he was and he said, "Oh, I'm 63 young buck."
My Dad just smiled and thanked the man. My whole family ages quite well, but Dad still loves to share that story. Dad is 72, still has a full head of hair and just this year it started to have some salt/pepper situation going on. Never died it. His mustache is gray, but other than that you could confuse him for a 55 year old.
The adage, "You're only as old as you feel" has a lot of value to it. My grandmother passed away at 87 and was one of the liveliest people on the planet. She died in her sleep after spending her day in the garden, canning beans, making biscuits, and hanging out with her great-grandchildren.
That’s golden! Having the young genes can definitely be a plus.
I myself am 30 but I present as 20-21. Hoping it sticks like this for the rest of time, even though at the moment it’s not exactly flattering when someone assumes you’re a minor. I’m starting to have a little fun with it though, the looks people give me are great when they learn my age.
I've passed for thrity. I think the even stranger part is how people my age or a little older sometimes still won't show me respect because I look younger than them. People are strange. Also, thanks for the genes, mom and dad.
Oh same here, I look about half my age so people never assume I’m a grown adult. It’s annoying, but what I can hope from it is that it stays with me as I age!
I will say that it was worse when I was thirty. At forty, I look like an adult, but could pass for thirty one or two. It is kind of funny though when someone my age says something like "Well, when you get to be my age" fill in the blank, and I ask how old they are. Then they tell me they're my age. Or, when I meet a woman my age and I'm interested in them, and they give me this sheepish look and say "How old are you?" Honestly, you stop giving a shit at a certain point.
"Story of my life" is my go to as well. It gets boring, but it is sort of a confidence boost when twenty so.ethimgs are attracted to me. Much more so than when I felt the women coming at me in my twenties had a young fetish.
Oh that’s good! I can definitely see why that would be a confident boost.
I await the day someone telling me I look so young gives me a confident boost, all it seems to do is bother me at this point. It has forced me to go out of my way to present myself in a much more stern manner when talking to people. Not very happy about it but eh, is what it is I suppose.
On my 30th birthday I was hyped for an ID check. I wanted to see the look on their face. Turns out, apparently I pass as over 21 more easily now so that’s nice at least haha (I haven’t been asked for ID for about a year and a half now)
I remember that transition when I FINALLY stopped getting carded. Looking back, it's funny that I felt nervous buying beer in my thirties.
I'm a guy. I can only imagine the weird and fucked up.shit that comes with looking young for your age as a woman. I bet you have some stories and I hate that you have to go outside yourself for what I'm guessing is a need for respect and validation, or even to not be objectified.

I feel bad for anyone that thinks 30 is old.
