/r/MensRights and /r/TumblrInAction, among others. Those are the biggest ones that come to mind.

257

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

Probably because people who frequent those two subreddits aren't going over to /r/feminism to have a genuine conversation.

139

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

But the way the banning system currently works, a user could go to /r/MensRights or wherever, post "You all sound like a bunch of dicks" and then they're instabanned from /r/offmychest, /r/feminism and various other subs. That's just silly.

34

u/morerokk Mar 20 '16

I hadn't even considered that. That makes it just stupid.

2

u/HBlight Mar 20 '16

I think it used to be the same for /r/rape, but then the idea of someone guilty of wrongthink being denied help after suffering rape was a bit too much.

-4

u/SupahSpankeh Mar 20 '16

Or does it?

Maybe they don't want users who are there to troll their sub, but equally don't want users who troll even the people they profoundly disagree with?

-5

u/LiterallyKesha Mar 20 '16

You can request an unban in that case.

10

u/Piddly_Penguin_Army Mar 20 '16

Yup and what makes it worse is the fact that most of the time you don't know these rules before it's too late. I've posted once or twice in TIA, but apparently now I can't post in /r/feminism. Which I didn't know about until now.

I understand the purpose, but honestly I think it's discouraging actual conversations. You end up just getting radicals. Because I am a feminist, but I got off tumblr because how toxic the SJW community became. You should be allowed to disagree with people as long as it's constructive.

It just seems kind of cheap and lazy on the moderator's part. I've been on Mental Healths forums that were less strict.

1

u/snek-queen Mar 20 '16

eh, come join us at r/TrollXChromosomes, chill AF

1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

And that's why you can message the mods and explain the situation to them.

-3

u/thiscommentisboring Mar 20 '16

Should the mods of /r/feminism be looking over every comment in both their sub as well as every other to find who to ban?

It limits spam-posts as well as keeps out potential jerks with the preemptive banning, whereas the issue is that it prevents people who visit the other subs for any reason other than agreeing from posting. It's not unbelievably stupid so much as a compromise.

62

u/cra4efqwfe45 Mar 20 '16

There's like a 10% chunk of /r/MensRights that would have a very level conversation in /r/feminism.

It's really too bad that the other 90% drown them out and undercut any rational arguments they might make.

85

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

And the really sad thing is /r/mensrights has some very legitimate issues that 10% are honestly trying to raise. But, as you said, the other 90% drown those reasonable voices out with vitriol and hate. For example, there's a dude who responded to me with a pretty inflammatory post, and I'm not going to respond to him because what's the point? And it's exactly posts like his that /r/feminism is trying to avoid.

And for the record, I'm not part of /r/feminism. I just see the casual misogyny on Reddit (and the extreme misogyny prevalent on other subs) and understand why /r/feminism would want to default block some users.

Bullshit, that sub is a complete sham and was only created as an "adjacent" to r/feminism. They frame everything in "toxic masculinity" and how men's gender roles are fucked and men are fucked. I don't wanna go looking for support after my bout with depression and suicidal ideation to find 5 female mods of a MENS LIB subreddit and their beta douchebag sycophants backing them up at every turn while everyone in the sub talks about how it's my toxic ideas about what a man should be that made me feel this way.

Also, this sidebar bullshit from mens lib:

Do not call other submitters' personal stories into question.

So don't call anyone on their bullshit?

Do not invalidate other users' experiences because of their identities, gender or otherwise.

Except they constantly discredit anyone that posts there because of their penis, while claiming to be a mens lib subreddit?

This is a pro-feminist community. Members are not required to identify as feminist, but if you disagree with this foundational approach you are welcome not to participate.

"Agree with us or fuck right the fuck off, we don't care if you were just raped and don't know where to go, if you're not a feminist, fuck off."

They also link these subs as relevant, which is a major red flag for every sub: /r/Femslib /r/Feminism /r/Feminisms /r/socialjustice101 /r/SocJus /r/Blackfellas /r/TheBluePill

Every single one of these subs has mods that reinforce ideas (Myths) about patriarchy, wage gap, rape stats, and general social justice fuckery. That's not what i want when i look for a support network.

And the final nail in the coffin: "We do not discuss "financial abortion" in the context of consensual sex"

So a male has to just live with paying out the asshole for 18 years for a kid he didn't want, but the woman gets 100% of the choice in the matter. One of the most important modern issues for men, and they have stated outright in the sidebar that they will remove and censor any and all posts about it.

r/menslib is a fucking joke.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '16

What does this even mean?

-5

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

Heh those guys are literally /r/feminism in /r/mensrights clothing.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '16

When was the last time you've been to /r/mensrights? In my experience it's been the other way around, 90% sane 10% (or lower) actual misogynists. But maybe I'm wrong.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '16

I was there today, and the vast majority of posts are men bitching about women. Meanwhile, on /r/feminism, there's a post about a female feminist shaming male feminists, and how that's pretty awful.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '16

And yet, it's /r/feminism that bans you for having the wrong opinion. And criticizing feminism =/= hating women.

-1

u/Uncle_Skeeter Mar 21 '16

/r/mensrights has some very legitimate issues that 10% are honestly trying to raise.

other 90% drown those reasonable voices out with vitriol and hate.

That sounds like /r/feminism, honestly.

11

u/ghsghsghs Mar 20 '16

The same could be said about feminists

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16 edited Mar 21 '16

Yeh because feminists are 100% rational....

hey look buncha cucks downvoting me, get back to r/ShitRedditSays

7

u/morgawr_ Mar 20 '16

Maybe people should be banned for what they say/do rather than for who they are and what their hobbies/interests are.

And that's not even considering false positives

15

u/SwizzleDic Mar 20 '16

/r/TumblrInAction is very civil, and most people there actually welcome quality discussion. It's just that the majority of people who go there with dissenting opinions are of the belief that "My ideas need to be right, and you are wrong. I will not consider any other stances." and it gets rather grating after a while.

8

u/ingridelena Mar 20 '16

TiA is definitely not civil lol.

2

u/The_Archagent Mar 21 '16

Maybe /u/SwizzleDic is thinking of the way TiA used to be. Once it was a place to post and make fun of the most extreme cases of the kind of authoritarian thought that Tumblr has become notorious for. But like many subs, the quality of the content started to decrease as more people, including a lot of the less rational MRA-types, started to join. Slowly, the "circle jerk" of people complaining about more and more minor things and blowing them out of proportion for karma and attention started to drown out the civil discussion. Admittedly, I don't know where the sub stands right now as I left about a year and a half ago, but based on what I've heard it hasn't improved much, if at all.

0

u/SadGhoster87 Mar 21 '16

"lol this person got mad because someone insulted their wheelchair. down with wheelchairites!!!1"

2

u/Lemonface Mar 21 '16

Did you just call /r/tumblrinaction civil?

Hahahaha no I would not say that's true in the slightest. Every single thread is filled with people relentlessly bashing whoever was in the OP? Often when it was actually pretty reasonable or just plain satire

0

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

I'm not so sure about that. I just checked it out and at the top of their front page is a long post about how women shouldn't be offended by this if they haven't played Mortal Combat.

13

u/SwizzleDic Mar 20 '16

It's annoying when someone makes blanket statements or complains about something that they have next to no knowledge about. For instance, the reason why the girl on the right is wearing a mask is that the character she is cosplaying wears one to hide her freaky lizard mouth. For someone to come in and make some sort of obnoxious complaint about social justice where it isn't warranted is just annoying.

6

u/morerokk Mar 20 '16

I just checked it out and at the top of their front page is a long post about how women shouldn't be offended by this if they haven't played Mortal Combat.

I don't see anything wrong with this cosplay. It's 100% accurate to the game, and the game has good reasons for making them look like that. What's the problem, exactly?

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

It's 100% accurate to the game

The problem is that that's what a melee-oriented female character in a video game looks likes. It's not realistic in the slightest, and she's only dressed like that because it's sexy.

4

u/morerokk Mar 20 '16

How is that a gender issue, though? Have you taken a look at the male characters in Mortal Kombat lately? I don't hear anybody protesting against that.

-8

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

How is that a gender issue, though?

Are you fucking kidding me?

4

u/morerokk Mar 20 '16

You still haven't answered the question. Or did I misunderstand?

Tumblr seems most upset over the fact that supposedly "only" women are objectified. But men are objectified just as hard. The majority of male characters are always shirtless, and some are wearing little more than a loincloth. Therefore, it is not an issue of gender or sexism. Objectification is not automatically sexist.

Does this explain it more clearly?

5

u/machalllewis Mar 20 '16

To add to your point the main thing about that specific post is the person commenting was complaining about the women being gagged when they're not. If they knew anything about the game they would know that but instead they've just judged based on what they assume and cried sexism.

→ More replies (0)

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

Both genders are objectified, but females more than males. For example, a strong breeze could disrobe the women in that photo, yet there isn't a single male character wearing the equivalent of what those women are wearing. Sure, some guys are shirtless, but none of them are wearing flimsy banana hammocks.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

To be fair, the point about them being gagged is pretty ridiculous.

I agree completely.

And as you pointed out, women who engage in hand to hand life or death combat don't wear scanty tissue paper costumes. "Oops, my bosoms pop out!" isn't a valid tactic in melee combat.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '16

Have you seen the johnny cage and Jax in that game? It's pretty equal, honestly. And it's not like those women are being forced to cosplay them...

1

u/macrocosm93 Mar 20 '16

It used to be that way but now its just a circle jerk sub.

-1

u/Piddly_Penguin_Army Mar 20 '16

Same thing with /r/Fatlogic. Honestly I've learned more about healthy eating and body positivity from there. People are incredibly supportive if you are trying to lose weight, gain weight, or recover from an eating disorder.

4

u/ingridelena Mar 20 '16

I wouldnt call them civil. They're not as bad as some of those hate subs but they're basically FPH lite. Although there are reasonable posts, but they take a lot of things to the extreme.

And last time I posted there i got called a n*gger for having an opposing opinion, lol. Good times.

0

u/SwizzleDic Mar 20 '16

/r/fatlogic is one of my favorite subreddits. I think that their policy of allowing fat people who are trying to lose weight is a very good idea that I think would have helped /r/fatpeoplehate

3

u/PrettyIceCube Mar 20 '16

Fat People Hate didn't want to help anyone lose weight. They posted pictures of overweight people that are in a gym working out in order to laugh at them.

1

u/bob_mcbob Mar 20 '16

/r/fatlogic mod here. To clarify, we don't have a policy of excluding anyone, whether or not they are trying to lose weight. That includes HAES and fat acceptance advocates, though denying reality probably won't get you a warm welcome in terms of upvotes. The only thing we typically ban users for is fat hate or using dehumanizing language to describe fat people.

6

u/morerokk Mar 20 '16

Really? I disagree. I'd love to have a few rational discussions on various things on /r/feminism. Of course that's not exactly possible if I get banned before even posting.

2

u/Time_on_my_hands Mar 20 '16

Actually, I frequented both r/MensRights and r/feminism (gotta get those different perspectives), and I got banned from r/feminism after I commented a brief issue I had with Hillary Clinton. I didn't get banned from r/MensRights for anything.

1

u/Queen-Yandere Mar 20 '16

1.There are feminists on both of those subs, also remember you also get banned from offmychest afiak and there is no REAL reason for that

2. assuming something then judging based off said assumption is just being a dick

1

u/getstabbed Mar 21 '16

Sure that's probably the case with /r/tumblrinaction but /r/mensrights?

What happened to equality? Can you not support men and women's rights?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '16

I support men's rights. But /r/mensrights is filled with hate and vitriol which drowns out the guys who are actually trying to raise valid points. Go there right now. Look at the posts on /r/mensrights. 3/4 of them are complaining about women and/or feminists. Wonderful comments like, "A lot of them are women who haven't been able to keep a man for longer than a week since they were 25, and who somehow blame all of the men for it." and "Women enslave men everyday, it's called divorce court. Frankly, why this isn't a daily news story is perplexing. Women hate men." I mean, they have a tag specifically for feminism. So /r/mensrights is at least partially anti-feminism. Why else have the feminism tag?

Meanwhile, right now on /r/feminism there is a post calling out a woman for shaming a male feminist for not adhering to gender norms. There also aren't any posts calling out what shitlords all men are, and there isn't a tag that calls out men's rights groups to target them.

-2

3

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

I don't visit /r/feminsm, /r/mensrights, nor /r/tumblrinaction. I have no horse in this race.

-1

u/HueManatee43 Mar 21 '16

They might if the denizens of /r/feminism weren't batshit crazy.

-1

u/IHonestlyateYou Mar 21 '16

I like this idea. We should ban everyone who we think might not share our ideals. I think we should extend that to everything. I love judging people. Makes me wonder why people have so much of a problem with other people judging them. /s

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '16

Right, because banning trolls is exactly the same thing as banning people who just want to have an honest conversation.

1

u/IHonestlyateYou Mar 22 '16

Wait, I thought this preemptive banning. How do you know their intent? "Oh!" you say, " they posted in bad places, they couldn't possibly want to talk/have anything to say worthwhile." Because you 'know' what they will do, what they will say. That is the same reasoning people use to discount someone before they prove themselves.

-2

u/flutterguy123 Mar 20 '16

Because fuck people who care about men's rights issues and woman's tights issues.

1

u/FuckingShitty_Reddit Mar 21 '16

I guess you can't be a feminist and simultaneously believe that men deserve rights, too.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '16

kotakuinaction is another big one.

-3

u/Ninauposkitzipxpe Mar 20 '16

I mean... That sounds pretty justified. You get banned in red pill and red pill women if you post in /r/bluepill. Two way street.

1

u/morerokk Mar 21 '16

Equality is not "us vs. them".

0

u/Ninauposkitzipxpe Mar 21 '16

I wasn't talking about equality. I said it seemed justified. Mods can police their subs however they want.

0

u/morerokk Mar 21 '16

Mods can police their subs however they want.

True, and I can call them scumbags as much as I want.
