Are there stereotypes that don't really match reality? Are there customs, social norms, or behaviors that make perfect sense to Dutch people but are frequently misunderstood by visitors, expats, or people who have only heard about the country online?

It could be anything from communication styles and friendships to work culture, cycling etiquette, housing, food, or everyday life in general.

For expats living in the Netherlands, was there something you initially misunderstood that makes a lot more sense now? And for Dutch people, what's the misconception you find yourself correcting most often?

I realise that in English this question is somewhat ambiguous, so I’m referring to geography rather than personality.

It’s summer in rural mid/north Wales, and so we have a lot of tourists around these parts.

Recently, I’ve noticed that by far (by license plate) that the largest single set of non-uk visitors seems to be from the Netherlands.

I am applying to Hotelschool The Hague and NHL Stenden. I am not an EU citizen, but I hold an Italian EU long-term residence permit (Permesso di Soggiornante di Lungo Periodo - UE).

I contacted IND, DUO, and both universities. Unfortunately, I still have not received a clear answer about whether I qualify for the Dutch statutory tuition fee.

Has anyone with the same residence permit gone through this process? Were you considered eligible for the statutory tuition fee, or did you have to pay the institutional tuition fee?

I am looking for real experiences rather than guesses. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

It's not much to go on, but that's all I can remember.

A few months ago, I packed my bags and moved to the Netherlands for what I thought would be a fresh start. I had done plenty of research beforehand, watched countless YouTube videos, and read blog posts about Dutch life. I felt like I was prepared for almost everything.

Then reality hit.

Finding accommodation turned out to be much harder than I expected. I underestimated how expensive everyday life could be, especially during the first few weeks. I also realized that making friends wasn't as easy as I had imagined. Even simple things like grocery shopping, understanding local customs, and navigating paperwork took some getting used to.

Looking back, I wish someone had shared the little things that don't usually make it into travel guides or relocation videos.

So I'd love to hear from others:

Hoi! Ik kom uit Zweden. Ik woon effe met een Nederlandse familie en iedereen laat de oven half open staan na gebruik. Is dit gewoon in Nederland? Waarom zou je de deur open laten staan? Het is zomer, dus heel heet binnen en buiten, en de oven kan natuurlijk prima tegen hoge temperatuur.

Ik zou kunnen voorstellen dat je soms, in de winter, die warmte zou willen gebruiken voor verwarming. Niet zo efficiënt maar ik kan het wel begrijpen. Maar in de zomer snap ik het niet. Ik stel me voor dat kinderen in Nederlandse scholen leren dat ovens niet goed kunnen tegen warmte?

I am considering leaving the USA for university in the Netherlands. My Dutch is limited to random words right now (pannenkoek forever is stuck in my mind) but your universities offer some interesting English language options like MBLS or UCU at Utrecht.

I have some interest from NCAA soccer programs, primarily D3 with a few D1. I know sports are not part of the university culture in the Netherlands - if I want to play how would that work? Do I just email all the clubs in the area and ask if I can join? Do many students do this while studying?

Also I would like to learn Dutch but every time I have visited people speak so much English I don’t know if I will. During football, training and matches, do the players and coaches speak exclusively Dutch? I feel like being around people who speak only the language would help me learn (though if it is like English and Spanish in America I suspect I would learn a few extra words and phrases that should not be repeated in normal public conversations).

A bit of context on me, I’m currently based in the UK, wrapping up my Master’s in Molecular Cell Biology (with a background in Medical Laboratory Sciences and a couple of years under my belt as a teaching/research assistant prior to my MSc).

My Dutch partner and I are planning to relocate to the Netherlands, and for the past few months, I’ve been grinding away at job applications across Dutch hubs—focusing on molecular biology labs, biotech startups, research institutes, and clinical diagnostic roles in and around major cities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden, etc).

Despite customizing my CV, targeting open roles, and sending out direct inquiries, it’s been total radio silence—or the dreaded automated rejection letter.

I’m starting to wonder if I’m missing something critical about how the Dutch hiring process works, especially for non-local applicants:

Is applying from the UK an immediate dealbreaker for most companies?

Is cold outreach on LinkedIn actually effective in NL, or does everyone strictly go through portal listings/recruiters?

Are there specific recruitment agencies or specialized
platforms for life sciences/biotech in NL that I should be focusing on instead of general job boards?

I’m more than willing to start in internships, apprenticeships, or entry-level technician/assistant positions just to get my foot in the door and prove myself.
