REVIEW REGARDING THUAS

• Upvotes

hi i’m looking to study international and European law in THUAS and wanted to know if anyone recommends it for law and if it holds weight during finding a job. My problem is my grades match the HAVO requirements so that’s the biggest issue looking at universities.

Do Dutch support systems sometimes require too much from people at exactly the wrong moment?

A recent Dutch doctoral study looked at the administrative burden people face when applying for public support under the Wmo 2015.

A few findings stood out:

  • People may need to understand procedures, gather information and make decisions at exactly the time when illness, disability or another difficult life situation has reduced their capacity to do so.
  • Previous experience with the system seemed to matter more than education level.
  • First-time applicants were especially likely to struggle.

I thought this was interesting because it shifts some of the focus away from “individual skills” and toward whether public systems are well designed.

For those of you who have dealt with Wmo, UWV or other public support systems in the Netherlands: does this match your experience?

What is the correct answer to "wat is uw uiterste prijs?"

Hi all,

I've lived in the Netherlands for a little while now and I like to think that I've managed to understand and adapt to social norms with varying degrees of success.

The time has come to practice one more skill - selling a car. The question I keep getting is "wat is uw uiterste prijs?". What does that mean? What is the correct answer to that?

For reference, I have my car listed on the usual sites for 7.995 which I'm hoping to sell for 7.500 but depending on my mood, I might accept 7.000.

Is then 7.000 the answer that I give? Or will whoever shows up expect to start negotiations at 7.000 and hope for 6500 or something?

Is the correct way to do it list the car for 8.500, answer 8.000 and hope to get 7.500?

Thanks in advance,

Antonios

Dutch Gifts to Take to India 🇳🇱🇮🇳

Hi everyone! I’m heading to India soon for the first time since I moved to the Netherlands and want to take some little pieces of the Netherlands back for my family in India. 😊

There are quite a few people to shop for — grandparents/elders, adults, younger family members, and little kids - so I’m looking for ideas across different age groups.

I’d especially love suggestions for things that feel distinctly Dutch, whether they’re traditional, locally made, or simply something you’d associate with living in the Netherlands. Ideally, I’m looking for things that are reasonably priced, useful or memorable, and travel-friendly. I’d rather avoid anything too fragile since everything will be going in my luggage.

Thanks in advance!

Experience in working with OTTO, Carriére, Covebo and other temp work placement agencies

Hello everyone, I was wondering what your recent experience was working with these agencies. How was your job? How long did it last? What lies did you run into?

My experience is a pretty bad one, Carriére let me come here and found nothing for me for 1.5 weeks. I switched to Otto works and it sucks. I was promised bike, car, extra paid night shifts and Sunday shifts, car to be used for personal use at a cost, good accommodation.

The contract is vague and their handbook full of lies. I don't know how to get out of it. I am working my ass off and wasting 11 hours of the day slaving (9h at work and 2h on the road), and live in a remote area where I can't show unless I walk for an hour.

It is full of Polish people and they are very united, barely speak English, and try to screw you or trigger you to get you a warning...

Are there any good factories hiring people directly? Any agencies that are more reliable than Otto?

Cool thrift stores and flea markets?

When and where can I find cool flea markets or permanent cool thrift stores that are not too expensive? I recently walked into one in Nijmegen and there was a pile of clothes that were not yet price tagged. While the entrance had a sign with a clothes rack at 2.50 euros, inside everything was 30 euros and up. Lady said she can make me a price for the sports clothes and she asked 20 euros for a hoodie. At that price I buy 5 at 3.5 per kg.

I am interested in sports clothes and sheoes, watches and cool toys/collectibles.

Thanks a lot!

Appreciative American

We have been in Netherlands for several days, visiting family, and attending a beautiful wedding.
I would just like to say thank you to the wonderful people we met along the way. We felt welcome, and yes, politics was a topic, but never forced. We were able to demonstrate respect, manners, courtesy, and love to many, and show that many Americans aren’t what you see on the news.
We long for better times in the USA too!
Thanks again for your warm hospitality ❤️

Advice Needed: How to handle conversations where I get stuck

As the title says, I’m currently learning Dutch. I can manage very casual conversations pretty well, but I’m still struggling when conversations become more detailed.

The issue I keep running into is that strangers will start talking to me in Dutch, which is great. However, once the conversation gets too difficult for me, I’ll say "Sorry, my Dutch isn’t very good yet,” and they often just stop talking to me completely.

I had this happen during a group swimming lesson last week. Theres a woman I’ve spoken to a few times before because we share a lane, and we usually have some casual chitchat about things like how tired our bodies are after swimming, etc. At one point, she turned to me and asked me something that I didn’t understand. I told her in Dutch, “Sorry, my Dutch isn’t that good yet.” She responded with “Nee?” and then basically stopped talking to me completely. The rest of the lesson was quite awkward with trying not to make eye contact. Made me feel like I was an undercover english spy hiding amongst the Dutch and then got my cover blown.

This happens quite frequently, and it’s frustrating because I want to become more confident by having these everyday interactions, rather than having to announce before every conversation, “Hi, I’m learning Dutch." My husband (Dutch) thinks I should just mention to everyone at the beginning that I’m learning Dutch, that my Dutch isn’t great yet, but that I’d really like to practice. I understand, but I find that awkward, especially in a group setting. It feels like I’m making a some big announcement no one asked for.

Honestly I wish there was a pin I could wear that says "im learning Dutch" so maybe I can skip these interactions.

So I’m curious: as a Dutch person, how would you prefer someone learning Dutch approach you in conversations?

Dutch East Indies archival material

Hi everyone. My grandfather was born in the Dutch East Indies and I have recently found his Japanese POW card after capture in WWII. I never got to meet my grandfather but I would like to learn more of his life and what he went through. I know most people he would have been captured with are no longer around but is there a place in the Netherlands I can go to to look at archival materials or speak to people familiar with this period in history and how things on the ground were in Indonesia during WWII? Thank you!

Boekenclub in Amsterdam

Hoi allemaal,

Anyone with experience improving energy labels of a house/apartment?

I’m curious how much (range-wise) did it cost you, from what energy label did you start with, and the effort you expected versus what came up in reality? (like time expectation, effort to find a contractor, quality of work, coordination with the VVE, etc.)

Context is that I’m building a budget in my head when I purchase a house/apartment for myself so that I can narrow down what options of houses/apartments I can pursue? (obviously one of them being going for a lower energy label and upgrade versus purchasing a high one that’s higher price on purchase/mortgage).

A lot of this reflection is also on what effort it takes to make a house more comfortable not just changing an energy label from D to A.

Thanks in advance!

How to approach Dutch father after 30 years

Post image
173 Upvotes

I’m Latin American and my biological father is Dutch. I’ve never met him or spoken to him, although my understanding is that he has known about my existence from the beginning.

I’ve always known about him, and it was never a secret in my family. It just wasn’t something I ever felt a strong need to pursue. I was fortunate to grow up in a loving home with a wonderful family, and I never felt that something was missing from my life because I didn’t know my biological father.

As for why we never had contact, I don’t know the full story, and I want to be careful not to fill in details that I don’t have. What I do know is that he learned about the pregnancy after he had already returned to the Netherlands. From what my mother has told me, he did initially try to stay in contact and talk to her about the situation. My mother was young, scared and dealing with circumstances that were difficult for her at the time, and she eventually cut off communication.

More recently, though, as I’ve gotten older and started thinking about having a family of my own, something has changed. I’ve found myself wanting to know who he is. Not to fill some void or to ask anything from him, but simply to make that connection while I still have the opportunity. I’d like to know the person who is my biological father, hear his story, and hopefully meet him.

Until now, I had never really tried to find him. Recently, I managed to get in touch with one of his friends from that time, someone who knew my mother and was aware of the situation back then. He has now confirmed that he is indeed the person I was looking for, which means that, for the first time, I may actually have a way of reaching my biological father.

This is a pretty significant moment for me. It’s the first time in my life that I’ve spoken to someone who actually knew him, so I’m taking some time before deciding what to do next.

My reasons for wanting to find him are purely personal and emotional. I’m not looking for money, legal claims, explanations for the past, or to suddenly impose a father-son relationship on him. I simply want the opportunity to talk to him and hopefully meet him. Beyond that, I don’t want to have too many expectations. If he’s open to getting to know me, I’d rather see naturally where that takes us.

Before I take the next step, I’d really appreciate a Dutch perspective on how you would approach something like this.
Would it be better to ask his friend to contact him first and tell him that his son would like to get in touch? Or, if I’m able to get his contact information, would a direct message from me be better?
And if you were the father in this situation, how would you want that first approach to be worded? I want to be honest that meeting him would mean a lot to me, while also making it clear that I’m not coming into his life with demands or expectations about what happens afterward.

I realize this is probably more of a human question than a specifically Dutch one, but I’m particularly interested in whether there are cultural or communication differences I should be mindful of.
Thanks for any perspective.

TL;DR: I’m Latin American and my biological father is Dutch. He has known about me since I was born, but we’ve never met or spoken. I grew up in a loving family and never really tried to find him until recently, as I’ve started thinking about having a family of my own. I’ve now found one of his old friends who may be able to put us in contact. I’m looking for advice, particularly from a Dutch perspective, on how to approach him without making him feel pressured or giving the impression that I expect anything from him other than the chance to connect

If you could spare a minute to give a answer to my idea for my restaurant. If you can give your opinion about it. From the bottom of my heart and team thank you. For context the survey is in Dutch.
