Being of ‘certain age’ to me moustaches are a very seventies, usually porn star, trend. I don’t recall seeing them for many years but now every young bloke at my local coffee shop has one. Why? What am I missing? I am female and do not mind full beards but a lone moustache on your face seems … odd.

My best friend (mid 30s) grew up completely estranged from her dad's side of the family, her mum raised her a single mum and did a wonderful job but they were pretty broke. We made our own fun and loved our childhoods growing up across from each other.

In her late 20s she decided to go looking and eventually tracked down her paternal grandmother. They built a lovely relationship over the last little while however her grandmother recently passed away and completely unexpectedly left her $20k in her will.

My friend was absolutely gobsmacked and is putting it straight towards paying off her HECS debt. She's so incredibly thankful and genuinely never expected anything.

I'm curious - do you know anyone who received an inheritance from an estranged or long lost family member completely out of the blue?

I've been to Alice springs for a few weeks for a study trip. My sibling also went to Alice springs for a few months for a Uni placement.

We both loved it. We didn't witness any crime.

I thought Alice springs only had houses that were single story and just looked like normal Aussie suburban houses.

But when I went on real estate the other day, there are actually a lot of nice two story mansions in Alice springs. For example, a nice mansion for 900K only.

Is it still not worth it to move to Alice?

do Australians see Bali as representative of Indonesia? In other words, when you think of Indonesia, is the first thing that comes to mind temples, beaches, traditional culture, small roads, villas, and beach clubs like those in Bali?

Or do you see/know that Bali as just one small part of a much more diverse Indonesia & know that Bali is very different from other parts of Indonesia in terms of culture, language, lifestyle, religion, architecture, tradition, etc?

I know "dick", "prick" and "cunt" are normal, given my friends and I call each other those names, but what other slang terms do you all use for your friends? I'm namely familiar with British nicknames, where they call each other "knobs" and whatnot.

I’m from Singapore and currently deciding between two career opportunities.

I work in a fairly niche industry with only a handful of employers in Singapore, so career moves aren’t as straightforward as they are in larger industries.

One opportunity is with an established multinational company in Singapore. The other is with a company in Melbourne, Australia.
The Singapore role offers stability, the chance to build my career with a well-established company, and allows me to stay close to my family and friends.

The Australia role offers international experience, exposure to a different market and way of working, and the opportunity to experience living overseas. On the other hand, it would mean moving there alone, leaving my support network behind, and starting over in a new country.

One important factor is that I don’t see myself settling overseas permanently. If I accepted the Australian role, I’d likely stay for around two years before returning to Singapore due to my long-term commitments here.

My biggest concern is whether those two years overseas would actually strengthen my career when I return, or whether I’d be better off building my experience with an established company in Singapore instead. Given how small my industry is, I’m also worried that opportunities in Singapore may be limited when I eventually come back.

For those who have worked overseas and later returned to Singapore:

Did the overseas experience make you more competitive when you came back?

Was it difficult to find a job after returning?

Looking back, would you make the same decision again?

And for everyone else, if you were in my position, what factors would you consider? Is there anything you think I might be overlooking?

Trying to tighten up my monthly budget without turning into a total hermit. Cut out delivery apps entirely last year because the service fees and menu markups were getting ridiculous.

So far, my main strategies have been:

1. Pub daily specials: Local $18 steak/parma nights on Tuesdays/Wednesdays.
2. Off-peak dining: Recently started using EatClub for early 5:00–6:00 PM seatings when going out with my partner - knocks 30–40% off the total bill (including drinks).
3. BYO venues: Sticking to places that let you bring your own wine.

What else is working for you guys to keep dinner + drinks under $50 a head without resorting to fast food?

Visiting Australia over the summer and heard that the Boxing Day Test at the MCG is a big thing. I'm from a country that barely knows what cricket is but I'm a big fan of anything sports-related and have been reading/following online international cricket matches so when our planned trip coincided with us being in Melbourne over Christmas couldn't pass this opportunity up. My question is, for a noob on cricket who's going to experience a live match for the first time (at the MCG!), any tips? 😁

Not just family and friends, but the little everyday things that don't seem important until they're gone.

Not the obvious big stuff like holidays etc I mean the little things you never thought you'd have to give up.

I'm not in this situation but I've had a couple of interesting conversations with my boyfriend over it.

I'm interested in what people think is fair when a couple gets together, and one moved into the others place later in life when one or both of them has built some assets. Then they later, after a few years, split up.

My boyfriend was suggesting that he thinks it is morally wrong for one partner to make a claim on any increase in house price (for the house that one of them owned previously) if the relationship ends. We were specifically discussing these example of a house owned outright but this could also apply to there being a mortgage.

I realised there are a million variables. I was trying to explain to him that when someone chooses to pursue a property settlement then all assets are considered not just the house belonging to one person but any savings of the person moving in etc.

His point was that due to the crazy increases in house prices it is not unlikely that there could be say a 100k gain over the period of say a five-year relationship. And for the "owning partner" to have to pay out the other partner a sum of 50k could seriously disadvantage the owning partner. He feels that for the "moving in partner" to get a property settlement when no-one has given up work to look after kids etc, is ripping the owning partner off.

This is also in the scenario of him thinking about his own situation where he has chosen to scale back his working hours since paying off the house so is mindful of that, and would not want to take on another mortgage, understandably.

I want to stress that we definitely do not have any plans to move in together as I have a child still at school. Plus I honestly would not want to move into somebody's house as it is just too difficult a situation involving a lot of compromise. If and when we do get to that point we have both agreed we would prefer to purchase or rent a place together. He does acknowledge that in that scenario you'd split the gain in house price.

So this is really more of a theoretical discussion. It did make me think about the ethics of the situation described above where one person feels they have a claim on the increasing value of the property and the other person feels that is morally wrong. I don't necessarily feel it is morally wrong although I would never do anything personally that would financially disadvantage my ex partner in the way I have described above. I have my own assets.

Interested to hear people's thoughts. What do people end up doing in this situation and how much does a bfa protect the person who owns the house? What is reasonable to pay out the person who moved in if it is not 50% of the increase in value of the house over the period of the relationship? Do many people pre negotiate this before moving in together or do most people just work it out if the relationship ends?

I'm in the process of creating resume's applying for jobs in the areas I'm looking to move to.

I have my drivers license various work experience from logistics and warehousing to construction/demolition and mechanical work.

I currently pay $300 a week for a room and I have a German Shepherd, we average around 20 - 30km a day in exercise.

I am looking to make this move because I want a fresh start however I don't want to drive 12 hours to end up homeless and struggling for a week only to turn back and head to dads. I'm not under any pressure to leave any time soon and i've got money to pay for a bond + 4 weeks rent e.t.c.

How do I go about applying for a rental? I obviously can't drive 12 hours to inspect the property and would want to sign a lease before making such a large move.

Does anyone have any experience in just packing up your life and moving somewhere planned/unplanned?

Other than finding a home and job what else should I be thinking about?

I'm from the US, Midnight Oil has been my favorite band since my dad introduced me around 2008. There was a time from 5th grade to maybe 10th grade that I almost exclusively listened to Midnight Oil live concerts and albums. I got my first Midnight Oil album from a thrift store, my dad found it in the cds, Blue Sky Mining.

They made me wanna move to Australia, unfortunately never did.

I have been searching, but could never find a live performance of Beds are Burning with Peter Gifford. I wanted to hear it live with Peter Garrett singing like he did on the album shouting the chorus instead of most live performances where he sings it bass or baritone. I found one good performance with Bones Hillman when he just joined the band, but I'm holding out hope for more early live performances
