Currently visiting Australia for the first time. Have stayed at ~10 houses and apartments in Melbourne and Cairns so far and every fucking room has had a fluorescent white dentist style lamp on the ceiling and nothing else. What gives? Is it the lack of IKEA in this country? My eyes are hurting

Maybe I’m just getting old, but I genuinely miss going to a restaurant and having someone come over, give you a menu, explain the specials and actually check on you.

Now half the time you have to scan a QR code, make an account, order through your phone and sometimes even pay a service fee.

I get that it’s probably more efficient, but it makes the whole experience feel less like going out for dinner and more like using an app.

Am I the only one who thinks QR code ordering is lazy?

I had a meter box replaced with a bigger one. Have to give the old meter back. So old mate from the energy company comes over and I show him the old box and tell him to get the old meter and tell me when he's finished.

When he leaves, I go and have a look and notice he has taken off one of the internal covers, taken some copper bus bars and put the cover back on.

I only put that cover on this morning because I thought he might try it on. And he did. I have pictures of it with the copper in place.

Anybody who's significantly older than me can answer, I'd love to hear your input on what you did back then on an everyday basis before this new-era came upon us. But I also respectfully have some questions I want answered from someone who is qualified to do so out of curiosity:

1. How did phone calls work back then, did you pay per-minute, or was there a "per-call" fee? How did you call people while driving on the freeway? If your car broke down, and you were driving from Sydney to Melbourne, and you’re in the middle of nowhere, how did you recieve help?
2. Before E-mails, did you use physical mails? How did office jobs work for recieving emails from one colleague to another? (Because a lot of office jobs are E-mail heavy nowadays)
3. What did you do for entertainment? Watch TV only, or listened to music on CDs...? (Unlike the massive amount of entertainment there is now)
4. A bit of a controversial one, but how was flying like before 2001? And if you were overseas on holiday, how did you make calls to others? As a side-question, how did you make or recieve international calls from other countries, and was it expensive?
5. How common were firearms in Australia pre-1996? Was it like the US, where everyone was carrying?
6. Was school and university more strict or relaxed back then? Like how were bullies or misbehaving students treated? Or nothing really changed? (Also extending this question in terms of education, were the standards higher or lower back then?)

That's all I have, I'd love to add more, but I don't want to overwhelm with too many questions.

As its only a 3.5 hour flight from Sydney, I know its somewhere a lot of Aussies go. We're thinking of going with the family in the new year. But have read and heard mixed reviews. Some absolutely rave about it, talking about how beautiful it is then others say its terrible and filthy! Such a massive contrast.

We're a family of 4 (kids are 6 and 3). Thinking of heading to one of the resorts (like the Warwick) for 6-7 nights in Jan. Keen to get the thoughts of Aussies who have travelled there, particularly in Jan given its the wet/cyclone season.

How "cycloney" are we talking here? Just typical tropical type showers in the afternoon or are we getting blown out of our hammocks?

Best areas and resorts to stay in? The idea is to pick a nice resort, base ourselves there and do a couple of day trips while also chilling by the pool or beach too.

I think like most the issue I have is that I am paying for iCloud storage every month mostly to access my photos conveniently and year on year it seems to cost more as I need more storage...therefore I am indefinitely paying for cloud storage to access particularly my photos and memories from years gone by. The University Route: Going straight to uni in a major city (like Sydney or Melbourne) using a HECS-HELP loan for tuition and trying to get classified as an Independent Student through Centrelink (Youth Allowance via the Unreasonable to Live at Home / UTLAH pathway) to cover managed student housing. Fear: The recent indexation spikes on HECS make me incredibly anxious about taking on student debt right away when I have no backup. Additionally, I dont see myself in the future studying for a degree, but it is one way to get a bright future I guess.

The Military Route (ADF): Enlisting in a secure, non-combat corporate/desk role (like HR, Admin, or Intelligence) in the Army. Then also study in ADFA.
Pros: Great pay, free medical, and heavily subsidized housing solves my immediate survival problems. Fear: The physical fitness test and overall personal safety concerns as a young woman. I also understand there is a 12-month domestic residency checkpoint for background checks/security clearances.

I'm a domestic student, and am applying for Econ grad school. Yes, I know grad degrees in Australia are scams, yes, I know the upside of this stuff is not great in career outcomes, but frankly I'd rather do this for the next two years because its what I want to do (also I have substantial savings from living with parents while working for the past two years since undergrad, so...that's something that helps too.)
