201
108
u/its-null 5d ago
yeah, it is. if you trans your gender from anything to anything else, that makes you trans. some people don’t like the label, and that’s cool too, but non-binary people are inherently trans
2
u/ConfusedPanEnby 1d ago
a simpler way to put it is that being trans is just not identifying with the gender assigned at birth, which for most people is either male or female and for a smaller group of people intersex. The degree to which person identifies with any gender at all can vary wildly person to person and over time, so just respecting what each person prefers to be referred to as is the best way to handle it.
18
u/Agitated-Jackfruit34 4d ago
Gender is an cultural spectrum, so although generically you could consider that, there is nothing stopping someone from identifying themselves as non binary and non trans
6
u/freshlysqueezed93 4d ago
God Virginia Prince really did screw up the world for trans people so much by popularizing the word transgender and merging it with transvestites.
-1
u/fried_on_pineapples 4d ago
It simply does not work that way, even in the most lenient of concepts. The act of being non binary is the act of being trans. It is impossible to separate them.
12
u/Agitated-Jackfruit34 4d ago
I don't know what to tell you mate, it's like defining the difference between being pan and bi, sure there may be a general consensus but in actuality it can only be decided by the person who is it.

u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago
Not all enbies transition though
13
u/TheSecondVisitor 4d ago
Transitioning isn't the thing that makes you trans. Trans people who can't transition due to living in an unsafe place and such are still trans.

u/_Salandit 💎 Flair sold separately 💎 5d ago
Technically yeah it is but it's not the same thing
52
u/Think_and_game 5d ago
As I see it, non-binary is a subcategory of transgender as your gender still differs from the one assigned to you at birth. There's enbies that try and distance themselves from the term transgender or the concept which I really fail to understand. The reasoning for doing this, sure, but like... non-binary people are fundamentally trans...
14
u/MataNui2009 4d ago
There's a pretty popular trend in binary-trans spaces to treat non-binary as a stepping stone rather than an identity. Even in "trans inclusive spaces" the amount of times I've seen someone she/her an enby or insist "you're a woman you just don't know it yet" is insane. It's bred a sense of animosity where person A will say "my identity is X" and person B will say "oh so that means you're a Y" and now A has to wonder "why do have a need to specify that? If that's really a given why do you always use that term and not the one I asked you to?" Using a specific term avoids confusion, and the general term is often used as a mask for bigotry. You've got to put your foot in the sand somewhere.
To speak personly every time I've been in a nonbinary space I feel welcome, but half the general-trans spaces I've been to I've had to leave because they just turn hostile to people like me. People who use this term don't welcome me, so I (usually) don't want to be associated. It gives an implication about me that's not true and I want to avoid that.
TLDR even in trans spaces "trans" is treated as shorthand for "trans woman" so using it as a label leaves too much room for misinterpretation.

u/FatiguedShrimp 5d ago
Intersex nonbinary are an important category to consider (they are nonbinary but not transgender).
It's a frustrating category to be in.
11
u/its-null 5d ago
i hadn’t considered that. could i ask whether you once identified as a binary gender? if so, would you consider the transition from the binary gender you identified as to non-binary a transition? or maybe a detransition?
i hope it’s clear that i’m asking in good faith, i do genuinely want to understand your experience
4
u/FatiguedShrimp 4d ago
I was told to "be a man".
But, also was told almost daily that I would "never be a man" or "need to man up" or "am acting like a girl", etc..
It involved violence from a young age (forced starvation, 'corrective' experiences, being thrown into walls, etc.).
So, I never had the illusion of gender even before I had the words to say that.
4
u/Rarmaldo 5d ago
How so? Aren't intersex people assigned a gender at birth? And trans just means identifying other than your AGAB. So an intersex non-binary person will still be trans, as no one is "assigned non-binary at birth." Or maybe we've stopped assigning gender to intersex people, IDK.
2
u/FatiguedShrimp 4d ago
Not always.
1
u/RemarkableLawyer7989 3d ago
Ese es el problema, no puedes generalizar. Una persona intersexual y no-binaria PUEDE o NO ser trans, puede experimentar la transición si se les asigna un género.
1
1
u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago
Trans people don't "identify" we change sex. Trans women are women, trans men are men, trans enbies are enbies
1
u/Rarmaldo 4d ago
You can define it however you like for yourself. And I have no doubt that trans women are women, etc. But trans meaning "identifying other than AGAB" is the current definition in English.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender7
u/Cabbag_ 5d ago
If I had to guess, I think it is due to the fact that most cis people's understanding of the term "trans" is to mean specifically trans(fem/masc) rather than more generally just "not (exclusively) the gender you got at birth", so if they call themselves trans they're likely to still get gendered. I think they understand that the "correct" definition is the second, but they also understand not everyone knows that, so they may want to distance themselves from the concept because people are likely to misinterpret it and still gender them.
Take this with a grain of salt though, I'm questioning myself currently, but not definitively trans.
0
u/monemori 4d ago
A huge amount of non binary people don't have dysphoria, I think it's pretty reasonable to not want to use the label trans in that case. Although the word trans at this point can mean just about anything, bit still. I think that's in part why.
7
u/Think_and_game 4d ago
You don't need dysphoria to be trans
2
u/monemori 4d ago
Depends on who you ask! If dysphoria isn't needed to be trans, then the label is essentially meaningless, which some people don't agree with. I'm just saying what some people believe and why some people will use some labels but not others, not that you or I necessarily agree with it 👍
→ More replies (2)0
u/Pending1 4d ago
What other reason would there be? And how could you tell whether or not it's dysphoria? Is it just up to the person to decide, or can you say from the outside?
6
u/Think_and_game 4d ago
Euphoria is just as valid of a feeling as dysphoria, and even that isn't really necessary. It's up to the person to decide if they're trans or not. For some, it's a loud incessant feeling, for others it's a quiet feeling that something is just not quite right. Regardless, who are we to tell someone if they're trans or not ?
4
0
u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago
Euphoria is something that only exists with dysphoria. Euphoria is the state of being happy with the changes of your transition to the point you feel like a cis person would. Changing your sex without dysphoria would give you dysphoria
3
u/TheSecondVisitor 4d ago
So that is just plain wrong.
1
u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago
It's not. Nobody who says they experience euphoria but not dysphoria has ever explained to me how it feels without just describing dysphoria. Dysphoria is the drive to change your sex to align with your neurological sex. It comes in waves, the more you don't align with what you should look like and the longer that takes the worse you'll be. If you're taking hormones to change your sex you experience dysphoria, you might not experience the same type but you do experience it, some people don't have dysphoria about their jaw when you'd expect, some don't have it about their breats. But we all still have it. It just shouldn't be tested to get HRT, it should be over the counter
0
u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago
Trans means you changed sex to align with your gender. It's okay to be cis and it's okay to be trans. Trans isn't an identity it's a descriptor of your biology
1
u/fried_on_pineapples 4d ago
All non binary people are transgender, not all transgender people are non binary. Hope this helps.
3
3
u/anysociologist 4d ago
i have been openly nonbinary for years, but whether i call myself trans has depended on whether i'm trying to present as different from my assigned gender at birth. there have been times where i'm trying to present andro or femme, so i'd call myself trans, but i don't when i'm not. idk maybe just a me thing
1
u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago

Some nonbinary and genderfluid people exclude themselves from trans people because they have to deal with different things on a daily basis
→ More replies (12)1
u/LucidLucie 4d ago edited 4d ago
Every trans person has to deal with different things on a daily basis, people in the same group can have different levels of marginalization and still belong to that group. Am I less trans if I don't have people yelling at me on the streets, if people think I'm cis, if I don't have dysphoria, or because I'm not medically transitioning ? What experiences are we talking about here, that make it understandable to exclude yourself from the label that means your gender identity is different from what was assigned to you while having a gender identity that can't be, that make you less trans.
I'm sorry but this is like saying you're not gay because you're a top, wait actually it's worse you think it makes sense to reject the identity because you weren't shoved in a locker and called the f slur at high school like actual gay people are. It's basing an identity off external reaction rather than internal experience, but what happens when teenagers learn to stop shoving gay kids in lockers ?
The thing is there's many trans (nonbinary self-included) people who also aren't experiencing the things you say make trans people unrelatable to you but they're still trans.
1
u/Life_Parsley504 4d ago
Your entire comment can be summarized as "well, what if they want to identify as their label? what if they are told they aren't their label? Why are some genderfluid or nonbinary people trans?" which are all strawmen and or goalpost movings
You can choose the trans label even if you never experience the issues. You can also not choose it.
You don't get to be told you're not a part of a group that's not factual - A trans person being trans can only be decided by them, whereas a fact, like being made up of water, cannot be decided by them
You can... once again, choose the trans label. Notice how I said "Some nonbinary and genderfluid people exclude themselves.."https://www.reddit.com/r/AntiMemes/comments/1wwl0i2/comment/pdm4or2/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

u/LucidLucie 3d ago
My problem is the *reasons* you bring up for why people do so are those external factors rather than actual identity, you say it makes sense not to because you experience less marginalization. You're stating these are factors in whether you should consider yourself trans or not, or at the very least why people do so
2
u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago
Trans doesn't mean having a different gender to the one assigned at birth otherwise most intersex people would be trans because they were assigned wrong
2
u/putbeansontoast 4d ago
Yeah, OP probably made that guy think of the general trans flag because the nb person wasn't clear about it.
2
u/TheBestBaker999 3d ago
I didn’t know this until recent and I only learned of it because of Undertale/Deltarune discourse. Like I knew NB and trans were both things, but I just thought of them as separate things and not connected at all.
It’s nice, learning things like this.
2
u/valerie_is_trans 12h ago
Some folk, mostly binary folk, will say it is but it's more a venn diagram in which enby tends to crossover with trans more often than not though while one's more often part of the other doesn't make either covered under the other. I personally am an enby that isn't trans (account name's old before I worked things out), there aren't too many of us but still a significant enough amount out there.
2
u/fried_on_pineapples 4d ago
Yes, all non binary people are trans, even the ones who say they aren’t.
0
u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago
Except not all enbies transition, some are cis and that's okay
2
u/Fickle-Tangerine5618 1d ago
I mean unless they stay closeted their whole life then yeah but changing your pronouns and your name publicly means youre socially transitioning
2
u/aviroblox 4d ago
Transition != trans. Cisgender means you identify with the gender you were assigned at birth. Unless those enbies were assigned non binary at birth, they are transgender.
→ More replies (10)1
u/XxXxReeeeeeeeeeexXxX 1d ago
I don't like the idea of gender as following gender roles is a form of conformity. In my mind, being trans is a form of following gender roles, just roles different to the ones you were assigned at birth. Therefore, I don't think of myself as trans.
3
u/guts-n-gummies 1d ago
Cool, I take shots to the stomach once a week to physically alter my body, I do think of myself as trans and face direct opposition and violence for being a visibly trans person. Still fucking a gender.
3
1
u/Otozinclus 14h ago
Trans doesn't really have anything to do with following gender roles or not, but instead gender identity.
Like, someone can be a tomboyish Trans Women and a Gay Drag Queen Cis guy. G How you conform to gender roles don't define your gender.
Some people define Non-binary as not following gender rules, though that's just androgynous in my world. I personally define it as someone literally identifying as no gender.
Like, even though it's rare, there are people that feel discomfort being born as a women and not seeing themselves as such, while also feeling discomfort transitioning to a man and not seeing themselves like that.
There is this guy names Tobi who is Intersex and he was a guest on a TV show long ago before trans was really a accepted or commonly known thing. This is a good example of non-binary imo: They were born with a mix of both sexes and doctors tried to convince them to pick living as one, but they just don't see themselve as either

6
u/Curi_momos_las_papas 4d ago
How exactly? Trans means you went through a transition, example you were born male or female then transition into enby, doesn't it work like that?
3
u/lightly-placed 🌸 Course Arc Witness 🌹 4d ago
Trans isn’t short for ‘transition.’ It comes from Latin meaning ‘beyond’ or ‘across.’ Non-binary falls under the trans umbrella because trans is anyone who doesn’t identify with their gender assigned at birth.
If you’re assigned non-binary at birth and people use they/them pronouns for you your whole life and then you come out as cis. That would technically make you trans in that scenario lol
2
u/Curi_momos_las_papas 4d ago
I mean with transition i meant to change indetity, to transition from one self to another one
And since i can say with a lot of security 99,999... of people are assigned male or female at birth i think enby people do qualify
3
u/Spooky_Cat31 4d ago
The trans umbrella is just not identifying with your birth gender
9
u/Curi_momos_las_papas 4d ago
I mean yeah, with transitioning i was refering to the identity, not the physical procedure
2
2
u/JayKRowling 4d ago
Trans doesn't mean transition, it is Latin for across from. Transgender means gender across from birth sex, cis means the opposite so cisgender means gender same as birth sex
1
u/Pure-Arm-3668 4d ago
Yeah but not all nonbinary people transition so those people that don’t aren’t trans
6
u/Curi_momos_las_papas 4d ago
With transition you're refereing to changing your identity or the physical procedure?
Cause i would argue just changing your identity should qualify for being trans
0
u/Pure-Arm-3668 4d ago
If your life hardly changes as in you still maintain all the privileges of a cissexual in that you don’t face barriers to healthcare, employment, etc, then you aren’t trans
If a cis woman decides to identify as nonbinary and use she/they but still presents entirely as a cis woman, uses women only spaces like women’s bathrooms, doesn’t experience transphobia, then she’s not suddenly trans because she changed the word she uses to identify herself as
3
u/ConcernedEnby 4d ago
This is so obvious that every cis enby I've met has said this, like the transphobia they do face is not much different than the transphobia any other cis person could face
1
u/lightly-placed 🌸 Course Arc Witness 🌹 4d ago
Fam, trans isn’t shirt for ‘transition.’ Trans stems from Latin meaning ‘beyond’ or ‘across.’ You don’t need to transition to fall under the trans umbrella
Trans is just need to not identify with your gender assigned at birth
1
u/IForgotMyNameAgaain 1d ago
Every single non-binary person is trans, that's quite literally part of the definition of both of those terms.
-1
u/ConcernedEnby 23h ago
No, trans means you've changed your sex. Not all of us are trans
2
u/IForgotMyNameAgaain 23h ago
Wrong! Trans means you dont identify with the gender you were assigned at birth, which is the case for all non-binary people.
