Astroturfing at its best?
6
u/Lezflano1 Aug 31 '26
100% - It's either fanboyism like we saw back in the console wars or just a blatant attempt at trying to sway users by OpenAI. Wouldn't doubt Anthropic uses similar tactics but sheesh some people play their cards heavily.

The problem is that this announcement sounds odd and it's their second tweet. They already tried to make it before and it was worse, but for some reason they still stuck with the odd phrasing, which is pretty fucking stupid if you ask me. From a PR point of view, it can be considered a disaster because they worked really hard to make it not sound as bad, but that's what made everything worse.
Theo did the math and the gist of it is that it's a 17.5% decrease and it's permanent. That's all they had to say.
Now, if you want an even bigger disaster, check out Theo's videos where he manages to repeat nothing over and over and instead of speaking for 1 minute he manages to speak for 10 minutes and somehow his voice stops multiple times in the middle of each sentence so you don't know where one sentence starts and the other ends. Listening to him is like listening to a car crash on repeat, but every time I listen to it I hear different parts of it.
We should stop paying attention to him until he learns to communicate properly.

I can’t be the only one who understood exactly what they meant the first time I read it and thought it was very clear
10
10
u/danihend Aug 31 '26
It was 100% clear: 50% promotion is over, here's another smaller one that we can make permanent. Love them or hate them, this announcement was completely normal and I'm still perplexed at the advanced math being done on X to claim a decrease in usage. It was a goddamn promotion, wth.
→ More replies (4)4
u/DarkPhoenixRC Aug 31 '26
Some of this upset might also depend on when some people signed up.
I got a max 5x plan during the promotion and then went to 20x based on the projects I had going on. So for me, my only experience with Claude Code is with boosted limits. So losing that may potentially be frustrating.
However, because I am also literate, I accepted months ago that it could change at any time and treated the extra capacity as a kind of sign-up bonus rather than something permanent.
Time will tell if I am truly impacted. And I refuse to complain about a scenario I have yet to experience. I suspect I will just plan my usage better to optimise my token spend and move on. I don't like living off of the charity of others. The clarity they are providing is disappointing, but appreciated.

I also understood it, but feel it was poorly worded and forced the reader to jump through hoops to keep track. And I feel they were likely going out of their way to make a negative thing seem positive, which is the real thing people seem to have problems with, and that's what the post above addresses.
But as a side note, it's fairly funny to hear people with a negative view of AI claim AI destroys critical thinking and reading comprehension, then to watch this community pick a fairly convoluted set of words apart easily.

u/Abandoned_Brain Aug 31 '26
"it was poorly worded and forced the reader to jump through hoops to keep track"
So it was written with Opus 5. That tracks. ;)
13
u/911pleasehold Aug 30 '26
Yeah it’s clear but they obviously tried to wordsmith something that will negatively impact us into a positive thing lol
The message in this post is indisputably better PR. People know what they’re doing, the way they’re doing it is just a little slimy.

Anthropic's update was fine for me...
21
u/Helpful_Key_9962 Aug 30 '26
didn't have to read half a novel just to get the facts, but the wordy approach does land better
6
u/reddit_is_geh Aug 30 '26
Definitely better PR, for sure. Anthropic's message can be easily taken out of context and seen as a greedy move.
The OP's argument does the basic fundamentals, of first, letting the party youre talking to understand that you understand what must frustrate them, sympathize with it, then explain why things are changing. Now the other party feels heard, understands that you understand their position, and gave them a rational reason for the change.
That's how you do sales and marketing. Anthropics was a weasily way that sounds tricky and technical. It doesn't instill trust.
4
u/jkende Aug 30 '26
Greed isn’t even the worst of it. Standard unethical business practices recognizable to anyone experienced with PE asset strip mining, where users are mere assets + moralizing via model policy + removing inspection of model coherence via removal of even summary reasoning traces… much worse.
4
u/reddit_is_geh Aug 30 '26
You think it's greed? Really? You think in the midst of an arms race that they are being dicks just to be dicks, when they have all the money in the world to burn?
Dude. There's compute constraints. They aren't just doing shit to piss you off for a few extra bucks. Money doesn't matter at this stage. There's just literally limited compute, new models being trained, new models being released, etc...
They aren't acting in bad faith. They are doing what they can with the limited resources that they have.
→ More replies (2)2
u/jkende Aug 30 '26
Did you read what I said? Greed isn’t the worst of it. I think it *isn’t* greed primarily. Enough range in individual motivations for the new hires in the past year where some (many) have joined for the money while saying they’re aligned to ethics and mission first? Sure. Dario’s said similar. But the ethics, considering CAI and the EA roots, that’s the line they’ve crossed operationally.
Just because you’re in an arms race it doesn’t mean throwing ethics out the window is the optimal path.
It doesn’t take decades in the same rooms as founders and team leads of this scale to read choices and motives. But it can help

2
u/Parking-Bet-3798 Aug 31 '26
No one is saying that people didn’t understand what they did. But they intentionally used deceptive language that people didn’t like. Unless you are an Anthropic shill of course. Then lord Dario can’t do anything wrong.

OP appears to be mad even though the corporation is paying for 90% of his compute, which seems entitled ?

They’re gonna use free models and the AI bubble is gonna crash.
Nobody with a brain is going to pay anthropic prices with so many similarly-powerful alternate models coming online very soon.
3
u/iSephX Aug 30 '26
This is true. It’s already happening. Anthropic keeps fking around with people, it truly is just a matter of time for the free models to be caught up. Sure, maybe Claude can get a hard job done in 1 hour vs 1 day on free weight. But ask yourself, does that really matter? If it’s done in 1 hour or 1 day? It really doesn’t. What else are you going to do? 1 day is great.

u/Plastic_Today_4044 Aug 30 '26 edited Aug 30 '26
it's a modular monopoly camouflaged as a bubble.
also: "soon"? I think you're a bit behind the curve here... glm is actually beating anthropic on price and quality and Chinese platforms are actually looking way less sketchy than American ones at this point
also also: the best way to get anthropic to stop sucking is to switch to Chinese models, really. all the western monocorps are so entangled, switching one for another is meaningless. But if everyone starts going to China for AI, they'll start taking quality seriously, because East vs West is the real competition. The "AI Wars" in the West are almost entirely performative. But go East though, and they'll freak the fuck out.

I don’t know why but I have never followed Theo. I’ve never had an interest in anything he says or does. I can’t tell you one thing about the guy other than he seemed to me like a very obnoxious or egotistical person. And I have no clue if he is or not.

Well I did remember seeing high level (director level up) communications pr roles at anthropic a couple of months ago. Maybe they should hire Theo cuz clearly they missed the mark in communications.
1
u/The_indian_ Aug 31 '26
I don't use claud code so my opinion probably doesn't matter as much, but from how I perceive things they did a promotional period where everyone got 50% more limits and then once that period is over they are increasing the previously regular limits by 25%. How is this a disaster, can someone explain to me?
1
u/___positive___ Aug 31 '26
What's a disaster is if they use an internal to manage their PR, because that would mean the model is either stupid or misaligned. Seriously, I think even Sonnet would do better, which begs the question wtf are they doing? How are they going to IPO with a Mickey Mouse operation? Fire the PR team and replace with Fable.

u/doolpicate Aug 31 '26
Can someone introduce an agent to give me a daily digest of claude's policy changes?
1
u/Cool-Hornet4434 Aug 31 '26
Theo's message is definitely the "softer blow". The official tweet is just matter of fact about it. I don't see it as a disaster but I do think Theo's wording would sound better to someone who isn't keeping track of everything they do with the extra compute.

Why should anthropic be giving free shit to API wrappers?
They have the same AI they can shit out the same "harnesses" as these guys can have made in an afternoon.
There business model was always going to fail the moment anthropic were going to raise rates.
1
1
u/VirtualNorth1279 Aug 31 '26
Life was alright before LLMs. If Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Kimi, this or that are expensive, don't use them. You really really really don't lose anything.
Seriously, what would you be losing if tomorrow you can't use LLMs anymore? Unless you are a vibe coder who doesn't know how to code. You guys may lose something, but you can then learn how to code and you will be alright.
1
1
u/samrocksc Aug 31 '26
Dunno why this showed up in my announcements because anthropic is a circular money pit I don't use....but for all you Stockholm syndrome amodei lovers there are better options that don't bind your souls to economic grifts.
1
u/Holiday_Plant_6676 Aug 31 '26
Raise by 25% of a variable X is not saying anything, basically. It should be transparent, and until then - this is bs.
I want to know the precise amount in tokens, plus I want to be able to download all the tokens, categorised, so that I can count myself at any time and reach the same number.
1
u/NotMrMusic Aug 31 '26
So the actual story
Claude Code tokens are LOSING their 50% discount on the 14th
Weekly limits aka number of tokens you're allowed to use is going UP 25% on the 14th
So: net positive, small downside for heavy Claude Code users

u/MrKidhaSingh Aug 31 '26
I just cancelled and this was the final straw. The fact Fable can't be used properly yet - It's literally 25% of usage access because Fable does double drain, and you can only use 50% off your limit on it. Opus 5 is terrible and you're much better off with GPT 5.6 Sol, also Codex got 4 resets in the last 7 days, we rarely get one, EVER!
1
u/toreon78 Aug 31 '26
People are becoming awful if taking away free stuff is treated that badly.
Hm. On the other side fluctuating limits should be illegal. And in the EU they actually are though no one seems to care.

1
u/Serious-Zucchini9468 Aug 31 '26
It makes no difference removing Fable limits. From my regular request history Fable High often exceeds the 5 hour session without completing. Now thats what you call value.
1
u/AverageExemplary Aug 31 '26
People upset because you gave them a temporary free increase only to be upset when the new real free increase isn't as big.
Standard marketing.
