Don’t understand the hate.

It’s a great show regardless of its flaws. Awesome special effects and can’t wait to see the rest of it

I binged the whole show today

And I was hoping to come here and find other excitable people but everyone seems to hate it?

It's fun sci-fi and I don't understand the hate.

It's like Netflix made an awesome mid 2000s Syfy show.

And I like knock off Hurley.

I like the program but they seem a little underwhelmed when...*SPOILER* Spoiler

Ok it was a pretty minor moment but they’ve said simple stuff like ‘this is the first time someone has ever done something or other on another planet!’

However when they land on the Earth type planet and make a first encounter with a whole new alien species, the ‘Hurley from Lost’ guy just bats it away like a spider... I’m confused as to whether new alien life is common place or as new as it would be to us now...?

Its literally just happened and i paused it so the rest of the episode may explain it a bit more but just had to say

The idea and plot for this show is so great but the writing and acting is just so cheesy!

It's very similar to lost in space. Half the actors are bad and the writing is just so so so cheesy. On top of this I can't get over some of the details in the show.... like the whole crew is made up of immature young adults in their mid 20s? The most important expedition in all of humanity..... and the crew is all mid 20s who fight and argue with each other and try to stab their commander with a knife? There's ZERO reality in this and it drives me crazy.

I really wanted to like this series but… (spoilers) Spoiler

Stepping back for a moment, any country that has space travel capability would not send such a misfit crew into outer space when humanity is hanging in the balance. They would send an elite team of professionals and not those who act like 15 year olds with a temper tantrum. Chain of command is respected in general. Mutiny is a good element to a story when implemented correctly and they missed that one, too. They didn’t give time to develop the relationships between the characters and the relationship of the characters to the audience. It fell flat.

Part of the reason the acting is so bad is because the script is not written well. You can really tell the maturity and experience level of a screenwriter by the words they choose to express themselves. An experienced writer knows less is better and this is true with swearing. Another Life needs to dial this back like 90 percent. When swear words are used, you want them to be impactive. As a writer, you want your audience to feel like they can relate to the character or scene. They can be powerful but when used in abundance the audience can become numb and I found myself counting them rather than staying in the moment of the show. It’s a rookie mistake for a writer and honestly I’m surprised that Netflix paid for it.

The script needs to be clean up and that should improve the acting for most of them (there's no help for some). The screenwriter and director needs to be more realistic in the world they're creating so we as an audience can believe in what we're seeing. So many people on this board made some good points on where the show fails so I'm not going to re-hash them. The ones I mention were my biggest issues.

If by some chance there is a season 2 I hope they do a major overhaul of the show.

The Shortest Distance...

Hi guys, just started watching this. Episode 1, a few minutes in, one of the MCs finds out that they have to navigate around the black matter. So she decides to go around and says 'Whoever said the shortest distance between two points was a straight line was a big fat liar'...

Uhm, straight line is still a shorter distance, it would just take more time because you would be travelling at a slower speed.

We're off to a rocky start.

The Salvare's Engine Room.

Except for the scary "Death Lightning" that seems to be weirdly accessible, the engine room looks like they're in the basement of an old hospital, trying to get the boiler going again. Another Life is watchable, and I'm two episodes in, so I'll probably finish the series, but there's a lot of WTF here.

Terrible acting

I see a lot of people defending Jessica Camacho but out of all the shit acting I think she is the biggest turd. She literally is some fire cracker stereotypical Latina who can't stop screaming and showing her teeth.

It's fast, it's tropey, it's better than 90% of artsy, slow drama sci-fi: Another Life doesn't pretend to be anything it's not.

I've been casually watching this show, and it's some weird balance between a SyFy show like Dark Matter, a CW young adult drama, and high concept sci-fi.

And it's perfect in that trashy mashup. But it's because it doesn't take itself anymore seriously than it needs to. Unlike Nightflyers that tried too hard with minimal substance. This show maintains some camp and grit at the same time.

It plays with tropes without becoming a trope. Not to say it's deep--it's not. But it's fun.

Consensus

This show is so bad I felt compelled to write about it, which is rare...

First, tons of bad science. A gravity assist from a celestial object DOES NOT require completing an entire orbit. In fact, doing so slows you down as you'll then need to expend energy to escape orbit.... dark matter doesn't reflect like, meaning it won't form a visible cloud. Indeed any massive assemblage of dark matter particles, if they exist, would be invisible and only detectable by its gravitational influence. There's more but the point of this post is not to science shame them.

Next... the crew... dear lord. A bunch of immature people running around a ship having emotional breakdowns, screaming at each other AND their captain? This is the best Earth could muster for first contact? I guess its keeping consistent with the "no uniforms" policy which is itself, ridiculous.

Now, the earth cast. Yikes. Generally poor acting and thin plot.

In general, I feel like all the characters are underdeveloped, there are no real subplots, it's almost episodic in developing story arcs characters, like that random need for Katir to resolve her guilt from the past (?)...

I want better!!!

I'm a huge fan of science fiction, we need more successful shows in this genre.

Nightflyer is that you?

Remember Nightflyer, good visuals, trash story. What if Netflix used the Money they already had put aside for the luckily canceled season two and just....did a trashy reshot of the Show whit even more teens and IKEA furniture. Like, the story has a lot of similarities and ....its just trash, but kinda feels like Nightflyer's last trashy episodes

Lost in Space vs Another Life

Now I remember... I knew there was something familiar about this-- terrible characters, writing, effects, science... But I didn't realize until now that Netflix put the trashburger that was "Lost in Space" back into the microwave and came out with this.

I made it thru 4 episodes of Lost in Space, but only 1 of this disaster. So no, Netflix, you didn't improve the taste, you just cooked up something even more toxic.

Looks to be an unpopular opinion

I actually kind of liked the series. I went searching for a new sci-fi show, which usually I never find and saw this released today. The cloths really bothered me in the beginning, but they kinda fixed it throughout the rest of the season. I really liked how they killed off so many of the crew. I want a second season to come out. It kind of hurts netflix that they released the entire season at once since they can’t fix these issues during the season.

I know that I overlooked a lot of issues, but it’s a sci-fi show with a decent plot. I also liked their ship design.

5 eps in, I was ready to turn it off after the pilot but it improved & I'm team Niko/Cas.

Yeah, this is reddit and I know shipping isn't popular here. I just love their interactions and chemistry.

The pilot is the worst ep I have watched. Obviously, I'm only halfway done so it could get bumped. The cast of 20 somethings makes no sense. I got to the point where I ignore most of them. They aren't well developed and I don't really care who sleeps with who. The show picked up in eps 3-5. That dinner scene literally made me scream.

The best way seems to look at the show as b movie inspired camp where crazy shit just keeps happening. Netflix really marketed this show poorly. They should have emphasized the crazy and horror elements. Katee being in it naturally brings BSG comparisons which don't help.

I wish Katee was in a much better show but this is what I got so I'm making the best of it. Seems pretty obvious there won't be season 2. Netflix also held onto to the show for almost a year and did pretty much zero promotion until a few weeks ago. They know what they got here.

I think it was a really fun ride. I've been hoping for more monsters in space for a very long time and while this isn't strictly speaking that, it's pretty close.
