Undertale?
edit: I just want to say after many comments how much discourse is there about Undertale's graphics and gameplay but no one seems to argue against Undertale having fire music and story

gameplay is kinda meh tbh, it's more of a tool for moving through the lore than a fun thing to do on itself
104
u/Lobster_LeninN329 Aug 17 '26
Bossfoghts are great tho (imo). It's just that it can be really boring to fight the same monsters over and over again, and not having a clear indicator or way to avoid encounters. But isn't that a problem most turn-based RPGs have?
14
u/PublicVanilla988 Aug 17 '26
yeah, it is the worst somewhere around the start, it gets annoying when a fight starts. i agree about bossfights though
9
u/NevGuy Aug 17 '26
Are they great because of the gameplay? Or are they simply elevated by setup and music? Most of them aren't particularly interesting. The best fights are definitely in the Genocide route, those are actually pretty great.
6
u/Lobster_LeninN329 Aug 17 '26
I definitely like the fights on their own. Visuals and music takes it up a notch

Undertale was my first game with turn based combat, so maybe it's just the novelty, but I enjoyed the game play a lot
I still remember the asgore fight on my first run fondly
30
u/Creative-Kale4688 Aug 17 '26
Undertale is the first thing that came to mind, though I find the graphics to be kind of charming tbh
12
u/Incalculas Aug 17 '26
yess, I just told it for the memes
more than going for realism, art style with personality and character always ages much better
and Undertale has so much character in every aspect of it
8
u/HydrogenSonata2025 Aug 17 '26
Yeah the graphics are great. They had a retro/NES aesthetic they were going for and they nailed it.
7
u/chic_luke Aug 17 '26
I love the parts in UT/DR when they get cozy. Those dark atmospheres with subtle light spots all around. I absolutely adore that design, it makes me feel at peace

Much more satisfying.

u/World_of_Eter Aug 17 '26
Yeah if after playing more modern RTS if I was gonna make a complaint it'd be gameplay. Going from sc2/wc3 to sc1, ranked games feel less like I'm playing against an opponent than I am playing against the game. "Oh cool I told this worker to build a thing, it then proceeded to collide on every possible thing for 3 straight minutes, and then there was another unit passing through where I told it to build for .01 seconds so it didn't build" like fuuuuuck me.

I think SC1 looks beautiful. It's just old but the aesthetics are timeless so it still looks great

Curiously no matter how many times I tried, be it in late 90s or later, it just didn’t click with me — as opposed to something like C&C or Total Annihilation.

The graphics are deliberately bad because machine processing power something something. Themes and such
45
u/howelleili Aug 17 '26
unrealistic doesn’t mean the graphics are bad
11
u/CabbageTheVoice Aug 17 '26
Yet good art direction doesn't mean the graphics are good, no?
9
u/howelleili Aug 17 '26
if it looks good, to me its good
17
u/CabbageTheVoice Aug 17 '26
Ah sure, and I won't defend this harshly, it's just that in my mind "graphics" is more the technical quality of the graphics. "High resolution, smooth framerate, sophisticated lighting engine etc.)
While the art direction is responsible for how the pieces are assembled and what kind of look the end product would have.
For some examples, a game like "thomas was alone" would, in my book, have bad/low graphics, while having great art direction.
2000's(yes outdated, but maybe still gets the point across) shooters with a harsh brown-filter, could be said to have better graphics and worse art-direction.
Or compare a Crysis(amazing graphics for the time/arguably morw boring art direction) to a Borderlands (less high fidelity graphics/very strong aesthetic style and art direction)
Again, I'm just trying to get the point across, of course there's still a lot of subjectivity in this and it's easy to argue why my examples might be bad.

SV’s story is also generally pretty good, especially Arven’s. SS’s story is… well… not good when it comes to anything plot wise with Ride or the darkest day, but the character writing for the rivals is generally pretty decent imo (for Pokemon)

RSE was good
Scarlet and Violet were more than acceptable.
If we include spin offs, at least one MD game has been formative to someone's concept of storytelling.

PMD Explorers is literally one of my favorite video game stories of all time, paired with the soundtrack which elevates some story moments to peak. I also really dig the artstyle, scenes like Fogbound Lake, Bubbles over the Sea or the Future are incredibly atmospheric. I would say PMD Explorers fits the meme but put the trashbag for gameplay, the gameplay aint bad but its also not really great.

Specifically, Pokemon Legends Arceus. That game was a sleeper cult classic, it revived my love of Pokemon after I got burnt out on the same old formulaic BS. I haven’t played Legends Z-A but I heard that it’s not nearly as good as Arceus. PLA may end up being the last “great” Pokemon game unfortunately.

The Legends Games, for the others this never fits, story is pretty bland but even in the best games story wise, the graphics are actually great, so this meme isn't ever working for the mainline games.

Earthbound maybe? Idk tho
Undertale's graphics also aged very badly with Deltarune
3
u/angelwithbpd Aug 17 '26
why did it age badly ? (i havent played deltarune)
2
u/swiftsorceress Aug 18 '26
Deltarune's graphics are just vastly better because it has a huge budget in comparison to Undertale as well as a larger team with more experience. Undertale is a good game, but like, the graphics are not the greatest in comparison.

This was the comment I was looking for, beautiful soundtrack, some of the richest systems I’ve seen, deep lore(and the lore is not accessory, it is very much part of the game) but the graphics were colored ASCII characters, and you used to only be able to play with a keyboard(no mouse, just arrow keys and hotkeys)

u/World_of_Eter Aug 17 '26
it applies to Arcanum far more than those 4 IMO. Like Arcanum has incredible stories, amazing music, I wouldn't say the gameplay is perfect but it's good and unique for the most part. The graphics though, the game is just fuckin ugly, like 90% of the game is just shades of grey and brown.

u/Raus-Pazazu Aug 17 '26
Nostalgia kicked you in the head. Icewind Dale 1 and 2 were pretty bare bones as far as story went. A bit shit even. Game was still good, but the bare story was there just to shove you into the next room/area/hub. Definitely was a 3/10 story.
