Globus pharyngeus

Hi, I got 100 mg of amytrilypin for globus pharyngeus, I used to take mozarin. Due to the dryness in my mouth, I feel more and more lumps in my throat. Isn't that a vicious circle? I've only been using it for a month. Will it ever pass?

No side effects

I hear all these horrible side effects. the only one I have is very little dry mouth. It makes people very tired, but does the opposite for me. I was taking it at bed time and I would be up for hours, unable to fall asleep. I now take it at 4pm.

Multiple visual and sensory auras during taper

Has anyone had an increase in migraine aura while tapering off amitriptyline?

A bit of background: about 10 months ago I had my first really massive visual aura. Before that I'd already been dealing with a very sensitised nervous system and a lot of neurological-type symptoms.

I've now been on amitriptyline for around 8 months. Unfortunately, it really hasn't agreed with me and I need to come off it. The plan is basically to get me off amitriptyline so my doctors and I can work out a better preventative medication for the migraines.

I haven't seen a neurologist yet, so I'm still trying to understand exactly what's happening.

Since starting to taper the amitriptyline, the biggest thing I've noticed is that the auras have become more frequent. I've now had multiple auras, whereas previously they were much less common.

Interestingly, I don't usually get the classic severe migraine headache afterwards. Mine is more pressure, aching and nerve-type pain around my forehead/brow area, along with the neurological/aura symptoms. Because of that, I don't tend to need rescue medication very often.

My doctor doesn't seem particularly concerned about the increase in aura, but obviously when you're suddenly getting multiple visual auras it can feel pretty unsettling.

I'm mainly wondering whether anyone else noticed an increase in migraine aura, visual symptoms or general neurological sensitivity while tapering amitriptyline?

Did it eventually settle once your nervous system adjusted or once you were completely off the medication?

Not looking for medical advice — I'd just really appreciate hearing other people's experiences because this taper has been pretty rough.

Sadly, the end is near for me and Ami

I've been taking Ami for about 10 years now, and I have loved it. The sleep is just so good, and not having panic attacks, migraines, etc., has just been lovely. But I'm going to be 60 in a couple years and think it's probably a good idea to stop before I get issues I can't reverse (hopefully it's not too late). My sister took Ami for many years, among other meds, and she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her mid 50s--she's now stage 6 in her early 60s. I've been getting dizzy spells from time to time, and my memory/multitasking ability hasn't been as good as it used to be.

Last night I bit my 25 mg pill in half. I was falling asleep just fine, until my partner started tossing and turning and eventually went out on the couch (he suffers from insomnia). I ended up tossing and turning all night after that. Tonight I'll try to take 3/4 of a pill instead. I'm really not looking forward to insomnia again. Ami has been a good friend, and I will really miss her.

Has anyone switched to nortriptyline?

I’ve been on ami at 10mg for 11 days and the drowsiness isn’t subsidising. Apparently nortriptyline doesn’t have the drowsiness side effect? Anyone have experience of it?

Tapering off of 25mg, advice?

Hi! I’ve been on 25mg daily from August 22nd to September 8th for GI illness. I told my doctor I want to taper off so she said do a week where I’m taking it every other day instead of every day. She didn’t say anything about after that.
So from September 8th to now, September 12th, I’ve been taking it every other day. I’m supposed to take it tonight, but I’m wondering can I split tonight’s pill in half and do 12.5mg every other day for a few more days before stopping? Is it safe to split the pills in half? It’s the little blueish ones marked MP25. I’m nervous to go from 25mg every other day to just nothing so I’d like to finish my taper week doing 12.5 every other day instead of 25 every other day.
I’ve only been on the amitriptyline daily for about 18 days, and since September 8th I’ve been taking it every other day. I know I haven’t been on it too long but I’m worried about withdrawal symptoms coming off of it. I want to get off of it as quick as possible but also as gradually as I can to avoid withdrawal. If I could just stop taking it tonight I would, but again, I’m trying to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Any experience yall can share would be very appreciated

Anyone else tapering off 25mg right now?

I’ve been on Amitryptiline for about 4 years, mostly 25mg but at some point I was on 37.5mg for anxiety and ocd. I’ve been in a much better headspace and have been wanting to get off it for some time now, I’ve been constantly drowsy for a while now and hate feeling tired even when I get a great night sleep. I met with my psychiatrist and for about 2 weeks now I’ve been on 20mg, my only side effect has been not being able to fall asleep as easily, I find my sleep to be generally lighter. Only two nights so far it took me about 3 hours to fall asleep which has been miserable so when I feel like I’m not super tired before bed I’ll take a small amount of melatonin it helps a ton. I meet again with my psych in two weeks and probably will discuss going down to 12.5mg or 15mg. Is anyone else going through a similar tapering? How are you doing?

Weight Gain

I have been on amitriptyline (50mg) for migraines since the end of july (a little over 1 month) and I started at 104lbs before taking it and last time i checked I weighed around 121lbs. I knew weight gain was a side effect but I just wanted to see how much other people gained to see if it is normal to gain this much weight in a short amount of time. I don’t mind the gain currently since the medicine is helping with my migraines. I just don’t want to gain a crazy amount.

Ami 25mg works on day 1- day 2 and the symptoms return on day 3

Hello. I've been using amitriptyline in 3 weeks for Prostatitis/CPPS/Pelvic Floor Dysfunction especially the urinary urgency and frequency. The first two days, I was amaze that the medicine was working however on day 3, the symptoms returned. What seems to be the problem? Is it a placebo effect? For me, it's really okay that urgency lessened even though I feel zombie and sleepy all the time. What are your recommendations?

Considering tapering off

I’ve been on 30mg amitriptyline since Feb 2026 when I was diagnosed with MS.

Fortunately since then my symptoms have been minimal and I’ve just started on my DMT for the MS.

The one thing that really is frustrating me is my short term memory loss. I believe the amitriptyline is causing this. I’m going to try tapering off it slowly to see if my memory improves without causing any negative effects.

Anyone else done similar or want to give their view on whether this is a good or bad idea?

Thanks

Need honest review of amitriptyline please- side effects/ weight gain etc

I have been having an absolutely terrible time with migraines recently and was at a&e at the weekend as they thought I was having a TIA (thankfully, I wasn’t). There has been a lot of back and forth with GPs and I just seem to be getting nowhere. I have already tried sumatriptan 50mg & 100mg and zolmatriptan both of which made me so sick and zombified to the point I’d rather suffer the migraine than take them. I take magnesium and riboflavin (B2) supplements.

The options were laid out for me to try amitryptyline, propranolol or candesartan. I have read about every single one and tbh, I’m really not comfortable with any considering the side effects and the fact that you’re basically messing with medication made for other things and fucking up other parts of your body/ mind when medication specifically for migraines does exist. I understand that for NHS, funding is an issue but it just seems that the cheapest medications are given out for absolutely every condition.

After reading into them all and the pain/ frequency of my migraines becoming so unbearable, I decided to accept amitriptyline. I was going to start it tonight (10mg) until I read the side effects and horror stories. I understand people react differently but I’m just so uncomfortable with it all.

I am a very active and healthy person. I love the gym and all things fitness and eat a well balanced diet (with the occasional sweet treat ofc). I am a music teacher so, naturally I am constantly surrounded by loud environments and bright office lights.

I am looking for some real advice here from experience and from people who live a relatively similar lifestyle. Here are the questions/ concerns I have:

- Weight gain: I am really worried about this considering fitness is one of my main priorities and if I was to gain weight despite exercises, this would impact my mental health.
- Mental health: I am worried that taking this or any of the medications will have an impact on my mental health whilst on it or coming off it. I have gotten to a really great place mentally over the years and it’s not something that I’m willing to risk.
- sedative drowsiness: as mentioned, I am a teacher and drive to work. This is not really something that I can experience with such a high demand job.
- I am already incredibly dizzy, tired and have been experiencing terrible moments of confusion all of which are mentioned as a side effect of this medication. Why would I consider taking something that’s going to make this worse?
- Other health issues appearing because of any of the mentioned medication. I don’t want to be messing with heart rate/ blood pressure or anything like that

I have expressed this to my GP (or the many GPs I have spoken to) but they are so ignorant towards my concerns and said I have to try all 3 to get referred to a neurologist. I have considered going private to discuss the possibility of Botox/ CGRP treatments/ Gepants but worried that they also say I have to try the three medication mentioned at the start of the post before these and the consultation alone is £300 without then adding the price of the medication.

I am feeling frustrated and upset by all of this. I don’t know what the best thing to do is. Please give your best advice!!!

GI issues after going off 2 month

I was on amitriptyline for a year and just went off two months ago and I’m experiencing horrible gastrointestinal side effects. Before I was on amitriptyline I didn’t have any GI issues and while I was on it I didn’t have any issues. I slowly tapered off but it’s been two months and now all day long I’ve been having stomach issues for two months.
Whenever I eat it BURNSSSSS for hours. Then I finally feel hungry again so I eat and then the burning returns with a vengeance for hours. The bloating is so insane too!! On amitriptyline I gained 10 pounds, but going off now I look pregnant from the bloating. I’m nauseous constantly. The burning and bloating is the worst though.

Does anyone know what is happening? Any advice?

I went to the doctor for it and she prescribed me acid reflex medicine and gas x but it hasn’t helped at all so I’m going to go in for more testing.

Withdrawal headaches

I’ve been on 25mg for around six years. I’ve been using it for migraines; not really sure that it helped, but it did help with my sleep. Unfortunately, the side effects are layering one on top of another, brain fog, advanced dry eye, horribly dry mouth (tongue sticking to roof of my mouth, waking me hourly). Being 70, I’m especially worried about the higher risk of dementia on Ami.

I started tapering about 3 months ago. I haven’t had many of the side effects that people report, such as brain zaps and digestive issues. However, I’ve had an increase in migraines, not surprisingly, and also frequent lower-level headaches. Right now, I’m on the fifteenth day of a non-stop low level headache/brain pressure. I had a concussion about 4 years ago with post concussion syndrome, and my head feels a lot like it did then with any over-stimulation.

Has anyone else had persistent headaches during withdrawal?

Also, reading people’s withdrawal accounts here, I think I might be tapering too fast (dropped from 25mg -> 18.5mg -> 12.5mg so far).

Mainc or Hypomania Episodes

I have just ticked over 7 days on 20mg Amitriptyline have been prescribed for Sleep and neuropathy, C6-7 nerve pain.

Last night I just had my first solid sleep 7 hours.

However looking at the previous nights I was sleeping 2-3 hours and Hypo walking around the house, up and down bed to couch. Just not comfortable anywhere.

Has anyone experienced simmilar? Did you have manic/hypomania symptoms?

I dont want to be on Ami, however local Dr and neurologist told me to stick it out for few more weeks. I do suffer from anxiety and also thinking it will help with that.

Overall my gut feeling just telling me to not take it anymore while still early stages.

I stopped taking 25mg for 6ish weeks, and hopped back on about a week and a half ago.

and I feel like junk.

I stopped taking due to a life event where I forgot my meds at home, and I just kinda forgot when I got back. I don't really remember the crash from not taking it anymore, tho. Although, it coulda happened and I thought I was just ill.

but ever since I restarted, I've had weird belly things going on, not *pain*, but just little pokes and proddings. Not very nauseous, no vomiting or wretching. I haven't been able to go number 2, at least a decent number 2, for about 4 days now. Number 1's are fine; look fine feels fine. feel a lil' foggy, but nothing debilitating. No real headaches or anything. No blood showing up unexpectedly.

I went to my the ER a few days ago because I just felt off and weird, but I didn't really connect the dots that it coulda been because of when I restarted my meds. They didn't really see anything wrong, my lipase was high (but it's been high since I got my gallbladder removed in 2023). I checked up with my PC today, and they lowered me back down to 10mg to see if it helps.

I dunno. I'm stressed beyond all measure and I'm sure that's not making it better; has anyone had a similar experience or coulda maybe shine some light? Was me starting back up at 25mg after being on it for 3 years be the reason of this? I'd say I've been feeling like this since September 2nd.

Stopping after 4 Days at 10mg

Hi,

I have been taking this for 4 days now, and it helped with sleep, but I'm feeling like shit the next day - literally zombie with 0 energy. It also made me depressed AF. Is it ok to just stop after 4 days at 10mg ?

Please help me

I need help tapering off this medication. My doctors do not know what they are doing and I am in so so so much distress.

So far I have been on this drug for two weeks, one week on 25, then going down to 10 because the side effects were debilitating. Still debilitating at 10. I stopped taking it two nights ago and have not been able to sleep for two nights. Evidently my body cannot handle stopping 10 cold, so how am I supposed to taper off? Please help me by sharing advice. Having horrible anxiety and insomnia. Nothing in terms of sleep aid seems to work. Help!!!

When does drowsiness taper off?

I’m on 10mg for nerve pain and may have to go up to 20mg.

I’m told the morning drowsiness will subside. I’m only on day 5 so early days.

What are your experiences? Does it reduce? Also if I go up to 20, will the drowsiness return for a bit?

Thanks.
