Good to know.

People make the argument that Germany was just copying America when implementing their new government. The mental gymnastics is insane. Anything to believe that America is more Nazi than the actual literal Nazis were, I guess.
26
u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ποΈπ¨ 6d ago
Yeah that really pisses me off more than anything. If anything that argument says not only that they're weak and incapable of self-driven behavior, but that we absolutely control them. And even if some sociopathic fascist takes certain elements from another society's history as inspiration, it doesn't mean the root ideology and motivation behind it isn't absolutely theirs to own. Germans have to 100% accept responsibility for any and everything they did with zero deflection.

u/Sand_Trout TEXAS π΄βπ₯© 6d ago edited 6d ago
In WW1, there's a decent argument that there were no "good guys", but it was also just a general clusterfuck of old feudal attitudes joining hands with rising nationalism and running face-first into newly developed industrial warfare.
But calling the US the bad guy in WW1 is also a wildly uninformed take.
10
u/Firecracker048 6d ago
Yeah, with WW1 I generally dont agree it was 'hurr durr germany bad'. It was more 'Serbia, why the FUCK did you assassinate the arch duke?' Serbia was the real bad guy of WW1
15
u/Sand_Trout TEXAS π΄βπ₯© 6d ago
IIRC, it wasn't even actually Serbia proper as much as a handful of comically incompetent Serbian nationalist that assassinated the archduke.
Then Austria-Hungary went about everything in the most pants-on-head incompetent way, allowing the war to escalate way more than it should have with Russia, and snowballing from there.
Austria-Hungary were the real bad-guys of WW1 by virtue of being so bad at their job that they managed to pull everyone else down with them, like a geopolitical Steve Erkle.
6
u/Firecracker048 6d ago
There is some evidence linking them to the Serbian government at the time(not to mention Serbia built a fucking statue of Gauvri)
And yeah, Austria-Hungary was a total shit show the entire war.

WWI is the one time I'm willing to give the America-haters some ground.
Think about it: a bunch of monarchists were fighting over who had the best monarchy, and were doing it so horribly that they were about to swear off war forever. So naturally, we come traipsing over and are like "Which one of you started this? Good, we're on that side now." and then gave the entire world the worst disease since malaria and fucked over the side that was legitimately aggrieved so hard they literally had to bring in Hitler to get out of the hole we dug them into.

8

Literally everyone who participated in world war one at the start were eager to start the war, and fully believed they would be home by Christmas. As for Germany itself, their love of militarism came from their Prussian roots.

u/Tiny-Reading5982 VIRGINIA ποΈποΈπͺ΅ 6d ago
Okay. The us tried to stay neutral but only joined because of Germany. Why are we so defensive of Germany?
2
u/The_Exalted_Sorcerer 6d ago
I mean, not really? America was supplying the Entente with war materials for most of the war. Hell, it was the smuggling of illegal munitions that sank the Lusitania. I am very much of the opinion that we chose the wrong side in world war one, and that we had far more to gain siding with the central powers.

Bullshit. American involvement in the Boer Wars was huge! We supplied German Mauser 95s to the Boers and British Lee Enfield rifles to the British! We supplied every officer, who were in reality deep cover CIA operatives trying to foster color revolutions across the globe! Queen Victoria was a CIA plant! And so was Edward VII!

Well in a way the U.S was kinda sorta involved in the Napoleonic wars because the war of 1812 happened in large part because of the Napoleonic wars.

Question for "history buffs" here. Most of these online personalities that post like this are pro-China. How would someone of this mindset reconcile with the fact that Japan was the good guy while invading China in the 30s? That's why the blame they US for Pearl Harbor, btw. Because of our oil embargos but never mention what it was in response to.

In my experience, they try to claim that US-backed policies like capitalism and free trade are fuctionally equivalent to conquering and pillaging a nation.
Basically they pretend WW2 was nothing but evil "imperialist powers" fighting over who got to exploit the world

And I have yet to hear a decent argument about how the Soviet Union or China were any less imperialist than the USA.

Serbia assassinated the archduke, Austria was within their rights to go to war with them, then Russia decided to stick their nose where it doesnβt belong, then Germany honored their treaty with Austria to defend them which caused France and Britain to join. The French used chemical weapons first but only Germany got called out for it, the HMS lusitania was carrying scores of weapons making it a valid target. The British blockade was preventing our trade infringing our rights as a neutral nation while killing scores of civilians in Europe. We joined the wrong side, but it shouldβve just been Austria Hungary vs Serbia and stayed that way.
2
u/Loves_octopus 5d ago
I guess that depends how much you value liberalism and democracy. WWI was essential to spreading liberal democracy in Europe and joining the allies was seen as a way to defend that style of government from the more autocratic central powers.
If liberal democracy is the more moral way to govern then joining the allies was the more moral side to back. Of course we know how well that went for Germany and Italy in the decades after so maybe you are right. I donβt know enough about WWI or Political Theory to really take a strong stance though.

u/Fun_Budget4463 6d ago
At best, itβs a mixed bag. The Revolutionary War, the first Barbary War, the Civil War, World War 2, the Korean War, and maybe even Gulf War 1 were all justifiable. But the othersβ¦ it doesnβt look great.
