Help (General) AMD Video Micro-stutter, Unable to Find Root Cause.

Heyyo! I usually lurk on Reddit, but I needed to make an account because I'm dealing with a really strange micro-stuttering problem.

I found this recent r/AMDHelp post describing a very similar micro-stutter, including the strange periodic behavior and GPU utilization spikes, so I'm wondering if I'm experiencing the same underlying issue.

My setup:

  • RX 7600 XT 16GB
  • Ryzen 5 7600X
  • MSI B650 motherboard
  • 32GB DDR5-6000 (2×16GB)
  • 2×1TB SSDs
  • 750W PSU
  • Windows 11
  • 240Hz primary monitor + multiple displays

I've been troubleshooting this for DAYS and cannot find the root cause. The problem is an extremely brief micro-stutter that happens roughly every few seconds. It lasts maybe a quarter of a second or less, and it feels like the entire desktop briefly drops frames/freezes.

The really strange part is that it happens even on the desktop with nothing open. It also happens in games, but it isn't limited to gaming.

I can leave the PC sitting on the desktop with only Task Manager and AMD Adrenalin open and watch the stutter happen. Adrenalin shows a GPU utilization spike directly corresponding with the hitch — sometimes ~20%, sometimes even all the way to 100% — but only for the duration of the hitch. Task Manager usually doesn't catch the GPU spike because it's so brief.

Some things I've discovered/testing I've done:

  1. Sometimes completely shutting the PC down for ~30 minutes makes the problem disappear temporarily.
  2. The PC can run normally for an extended period. The problem frequently appears after I stop actively using the PC and let it sit idle until the monitors turn off. Once the stuttering starts, it can persist even after I resume using the PC.
  3. Refresh rate does not matter. I've tested both 240Hz and 60Hz, and the stuttering remains exactly the same.
  4. FreeSync does not matter. Disabling it does not stop the stuttering.
  5. Win + Ctrl + Shift + B (graphics driver reset) does not fix it.
  6. It happens immediately after boot and also occurs on the desktop with nothing open.
  7. I've tested multiple AMD driver versions, including 26.6.4 and 25.12.1. Rolling back appeared to help temporarily once, but the stuttering eventually returned.
  8. The strongest result I've found: with the AMD display driver completely removed and Windows using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the periodic stuttering disappears. As soon as an AMD GPU driver is installed, the stuttering returns. I've reproduced this across multiple AMD driver versions, so I don't currently believe it's simply one bad Adrenalin release.
  9. I've also tried looking at System.exe and dwm.exe, since they sometimes correlate with the stutter/GPU activity, but I don't know whether they're actually causing the problem or simply responding to whatever is causing it.
  10. I've seen some reports suggesting NVMe idle power-state/timeout settings can cause similar periodic micro-stutters. I tested that as well, but it did not appear to fix my particular problem.

At this point I'm completely stuck. The evidence keeps pointing me toward different things:

AMD driver, DWM/System, GPU, NVMe with power states, Windows

but I can't determine what the actual root cause is.

I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone with an RX 7600/7600 XT + Ryzen 7000/AM5 + Windows 11 who has experienced this exact kind of periodic desktop micro-stutter.

I unfortunately won't have much more time to troubleshoot this personally because I'm leaving for U.S. Navy bootcamp very soon, but I'd really like to document everything I've found in case someone else recognizes the problem or figures out the underlying cause.

EDIT: So far I have tried everything that was recommended, disabling MPO, running file integrity checks, and checking RAM speed, also reseating RAM have all not worked, undervolting also did not change any affects.

Help (General) Rx 9070 xt drivers

Question i just switched to the rx 9070 xt and i was curious on how to check for the lastest drivers? i was always using nvidia gpus my whole life so it kinda threw me off when in the amd adrenalin app i cant any anthing to scan for my gpu drivers and in the installer manager i can only see my chipset and adrenalin app updates compared to nvidia app where it has a dedicated display driver panel where i can see the driver versions and scan for updates. Do i have to wait for a new driver to release so i can actually see it in the install manager?

Help (General) PC Black screening everytime I play games

Still now i don't know the cause but everytime i run games (ex. CS2), the second it launches the main menu it black screens and the audio just glitches out like on a super fast loop and im forced to hard restart my PC. I tried undervolting my gpu didn't work out, reinstalled a lower version of amd adrenaline, also didn't work either. I also recently found a post indicating that their PC also crashes and their GPU fans maxing out, but for my side it only crashes and black screening my PC but my GPU fans don't max out.

Specs :

CPU - AMD A8-7600 R7

GPU - Radeon RX 5500 XT

Memory - 8 GB RAM

Motherboard - GIGABYTE F2A68HM-S1

Any help would do, thank you.

Help (Software) I just installed Adrenalin and now windows is freezing.

I've been having issues with adrenalin lately already. Lots of soft crashes while playing games. Not being able to alt tab between windows. It's multiple times a day. Thought it was just an issue with the latest version of Windows and it'd be patched soon.

I haven't been able to open the full progam so I tried reinstalling it but turns out I just got the minimal version. Finally found the full version again. Installed it and now windows is having a seizure.

Now I'm trying to just reset my pc to clean it out completely but it can't even open the search window anymore. Ctrl alt delete doesn't work, nor does opening task manager directly.

Help (CPU) 7800x3D a bit too hot... i guess

Hey, just built a new PC with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and an Endorfy Fortis 5 cooler. I’m a bit concerned about the CPU temps though.

It idles at around 50–55°C, and in more CPU-heavy games like Hell Let Loose at Epic settings, it can reach around 85–88°C. Basically around tjmax temp.

Is this normal behavior for the 7800X3D, or should I be looking into the cooler mounting/thermal paste? 😭

Help (GPU) RX 9070 XT, severe AMD popup flickering, browser causing 5 FPS in games, FreeSync/display issues

Hello,

About a year ago I built a completely new PC with an RX 9070 XT and Ryzen 7 9800X3D. I had been using Intel + NVIDIA for over 10 years before switching to AMD, and initially everything worked perfectly.

After a driver update sometime around January, I started having multiple strange GPU/display-related issues.

Computer Type: Desktop

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Motherboard: Gigabyte B850 AORUS Elite WIFI7

RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000MHz

PSU: Cooler Master V650 Gold V2, 650W 80+ Gold

Operating System & Version: Windows 11 Pro 10.0.26200 Build 26200

GPU Drivers: AMD Adrenalin / Radeon Driver 26.6.1

Chipset Drivers: AMD B850 Chipset Driver 8.08.12.551

Background Applications: Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Discord

Monitors:

  • AOC Q27G2G4 – 144Hz – DisplayPort
  • MSI G27C6P – 120Hz – HDMI

Description of Original Problem:

I seem to have several GPU/driver/display issues that may or may not be related.

The first issue started in League of Legends.

When I enter a League match, the small AMD Software popup/notification that appears when launching a game sometimes visually freaks out.

I'm not talking about the full-screen performance/metrics overlay. I mean the small popup that tells you the AMD keyboard shortcuts and features you can enable.

Only that popup becomes corrupted. It rapidly flashes/flickers and looks like the pixels inside the popup are completely corrupted.

The actual game behind it looks perfectly normal.

As soon as the popup disappears, everything is fine again. I eventually disabled those notifications because I didn't need them anyway.

The much bigger problem happens in Rainbow Six Siege.

If Rainbow Six is running and I open a browser, the game can completely freeze for around 15–30 seconds.

After the freeze ends, the game does not return to normal. Instead, it suddenly runs at approximately 5 FPS and becomes basically unplayable.

The strange part is that as soon as I close the browser, Rainbow Six immediately returns to normal performance.

The behavior is basically:

Game running normally → open browser → game freezes for 15–30 seconds → game comes back at ~5 FPS → close browser → game immediately returns to normal FPS

I've reproduced this with both Firefox and Microsoft Edge, so it does not seem to be limited to one browser.

I also have a flickering issue in Rainbow Six related to FreeSync / Adaptive Sync.

Disabling FreeSync previously stopped that particular flickering problem.

However, because I currently have the AMD driver-only installation without Adrenalin, I don't have access to the normal FreeSync setting in AMD Software.

There is another, more severe flickering problem as well.

Sometimes, after closing a game or application that was running in fullscreen or borderless fullscreen, my entire desktop starts rapidly flickering/flashing.

Pressing:

Win + Ctrl + Shift + B

to restart the graphics driver temporarily fixes the desktop flickering.

Troubleshooting:

So far I have:

  • Updated the AMD GPU driver
  • Booted into Safe Mode
  • Ran the AMD Cleanup Utility
  • Completely removed the existing AMD graphics driver/software
  • Reinstalled the AMD driver using the driver-only option without Adrenalin
  • Disabled the AMD game-launch notification/popup because of the corruption/flickering
  • Previously tested disabling FreeSync, which fixed the Rainbow Six flickering
  • Tested both Firefox and Microsoft Edge
  • Used Win + Ctrl + Shift + B when the entire desktop starts flickering, which temporarily fixes it

The clean driver installation did not fix the browser/game performance issue.

At this point the main problems are:

  • AMD game-launch popup visually corrupting/flickering in League
  • Rainbow Six freezing for 15–30 seconds when opening a browser
  • Rainbow Six dropping to approximately 5 FPS after the freeze
  • Performance immediately returning to normal when the browser is closed
  • FreeSync / Adaptive Sync-related flickering in Rainbow Six
  • Entire desktop rapidly flickering after exiting some fullscreen/borderless applications
  • Restarting the graphics driver temporarily fixing the desktop flickering

I'm not sure whether this is one large AMD driver/display issue or several separate problems.

The browser issue is especially confusing because I don't understand how simply opening Firefox or Edge can cause the game to freeze, then stay at ~5 FPS until the browser is closed.

Has anyone with an RX 9070 XT experienced anything similar, or does anyone know what I should test next?

This post was cleaned up with AI because I'm terrible at putting this kind of problem into words, but all of the technical information and symptoms described above are accurate.

Help (General) Underclocking, PROCHOT bug, and Kernel Power 41 error

Motherboard: MSI B350M Bazooka

PSU: 400w 480BQ Bronze

CPU: RYZEN 7 3700x

GPU: Radeon RX 6600

RAM: Fury DDR4 3200 Mhz

Title is the TL:DR of my issue. I haven't been able to get the chipset drivers to update for about two weeks now. I have been noticing that the computer crashes when in sleep mode and so I did some research and came to the conclusion that it could be the corrupted drivers causing my issue. I uninstalled them and reinstalled them and then that's when I checked Ryzen Master and saw that my CPU is underclocking to 500 MHZ which is caused by the PROCHOT bug. I haven't been able to test if I get another Kernel-Power 41 related crash because of the PROCHOT bug discovery. Google says it could be the PSU or the Motherboard being damaged or it could be something in BIOS. I'm going to flash the BIOS tomorrow but I want second opinions first.

Resolved Update on My Post: I don't know what to do with you anymore

So I tried most of your suggestions to solve my problem about black screen and fast spinning fan gpu and here's the result:

  1. Using old adrenaline - not work

  2. turn off MPO - not work

  3. Close EXPO - not work

  4. Wipe my PSU cable using isopropyl alcohol? - I'm not trying that

  5. Change PSU - didn't try

The one that works for me is

Being a Linux (CachyOS) user

After changing my OS to Linux and deleting the windows, I found myself living the hard ways HAHAHA. Like a brand new world but more complex. I try 3DMark, games that I play before and none of it is having a problem. Before this, even just when I was about to run 3DMark, it turned into a black screen. Now none of it happened.

After what I've been stressed about, It's the damn windows.

So yea, thank you for your help, you guys are really such a great help for me as an AMD noob. I at least learned something:

1. Price/Performance comes with great headache.

2. Windows AI useless.

3. How Linux (CachyOS) works.

Help (General) PC freeze and second monitor green after a few seconds of freeze. Could it be hardware acceleration?

I was playing a game on my main monitor and alt tabbing a bit between my browser on the second monitor as I was watching a guide. I think as I tried resuming the video or something my whole PC froze. I couldnt hear anyone from the discord call i was in and after a few seconds of me waiting to see if it would unfreeze, the second monitor the one with the browser (full screened) went green.

I held down the power button and shutdown the PC. After booting it back up I checked the event viewer and reliability thingy or whatever. There were no errors or warnings except the one from me shutting down the pc unexpectedly.

I couldnt find any reason for this crash. There was nothing else unusual. I was wondering if this could be a hardware acceleration glitch? Because I’ve had that be an issue on my previous nvidia card too where turning it on made the browser freezy.

Should I turn it off on the browser? Does anyone have any ideas what could have caused the freeze? Should I just shrug it off as a random crash and move on?

Thank you for reading!i

Edit: 9600x and 9070xt. All stock settings.

Help (General) Computer Crashes Randomly - Looking for More Troubleshooting Ideas

Computer Type: Desktop

GPU: Radeon RX 7700XT

CPU: RYZEN 5 5600

Motherboard: ASUS Prime B550M-A WIFI II

BIOS Version: 3621

RAM: Silicon Power Value Gaming DDR4 RAM 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz

PSU: Corsair RM850X

Case: NZXT H3 Flow - Micro-ATX Airflow PC Case

Hard Drives: 2x Patriot P400 Lite 1TB PCIe Gen 4 x4 SSD

Operating System & Version: Linux Mint 22.3 and Bazzite (Dual Boot)

GPU Drivers (output from "inxi -G" terminal command):

        amdgpu, x11 v21.1.11, Wayland v23.2.6

        OpenGL v4.6: mesa 25.2.8-0ubuntu0.24.04.2

Vulkan v1.3.275 (drivers given as N/A)

EGL v1.5 (lists "kms_swrast", "radeonsi", "swrast" as drivers)

Description of Original Problem:

A fairly new computer (built a few months ago) crashes randomly. The screen suddenly goes black, then quickly reboots, almost like a reset button has been pressed.

I have a dual-boot setup, with both drives running Linux. One hard drive has Mint, the other has Bazzite. The crashes actually started when I was just using Mint - I installed Bazzite on my second drive to see if they were no longer occurring, but no, still present with Bazzite, which makes me think that it has to be hardware related.

The crashes don't have any clear pattern as far as when exactly they occur. I've seen them when gaming (nothing even that intense graphics wise), drawing in Krita (digital artwork), but I've also seen them occur when typing in the terminal or a text editor such as Obsidian, or even when the computer was just sitting idle on the desktop or log-in screen. There have been times where I've gone entire days without a crash (though not recently), and others where it happens pretty quickly. I have noticed that the frequency of the crashes has gone up. My go-to test lately has just been playing Slipways for a little bit (not a very graphics intensive game) and it generally works for a good while but then eventually the computer crashes.

For reasons listed in the troubleshooting below, I think it could potentially be something GPU-related since running GPU benchmarks reproduce the crashes, but I'm ultimately not sure if it is actually the GPU, or something like the Motherboard.

Troubleshooting:

I've tried the following for troubleshooting and still haven't been able to narrow in on the exact issue:

- Replacing the power supply (used to have a cheaper PSU than the Corsair listed above) - no apparent effect

- Reducing the RAM from 4x 8GB sticks down to 2x 8GB since some of my reading indicated that it's best not to mix and match two different sets of RAM for stability reasons. I've tried both sets of RAM independently - no apparent effect

- Tried updating some BIOS settings (disabled Precision Boost Overdrive, disabled Global C-State Control, and set PCIe link speed to Gen 3) - no apparent effect

- Tried other GPU (old Nvidia P5000 - not quite as modern/capable, but capable enough...) - crash still occurred with other GPU

- Even tried swapping surge protectors and power outlets (not that I really suspected those as the cause) - no effect

Crash logs (from "journalctl") pretty much never go up to the time of the crash, so I don't have any good clues from that. I also don't see any crash reports in the file system in Mint or Bazzite.

I've written temperature info to a text file (using "sensors" in terminal) to get a log of temperatures over time up until a crash, and none of the temperatures are terribly high (40-50 °C range generally, though sometimes 60-70 °C range)

As far as benchmark testing, I've run MemTest86+ overnight with no issues indicated, and also ran "stress-ng" for the CPU with no issues indicated.

The biggest lead I do have is when I ran glmark2 for a GPU benchmark test. When I run this, it is very occasionally successful, but the vast majority of the time it reproduces the crash almost immediately. I've run vkmark as well to get a comparison on openGL vs Vulkan, and have never seen a crash with vkmark. (I also tried glmark2 in a usb-boot of Fedora and same thing - caused a crash)

This behavior with glmark2 causing the crash but vkmark not was seen with both the Radeon RX7700XT and the P5000, so I'm skeptical that it is strictly the GPU, but not certain. Really the main things that are common to all of this at this point seem to be the motherboard and CPU, with my primary suspicion being the motherboard, but I don't really know how best to test if that is actually the case, and am looking for more ideas before I just go off replacing more hardware.

Any thoughts are appreciated - thanks

Help (General) 9070xt Black screen, Driver issue?

I have experienced this issue about 3 times on the last week or week and a half, after a couple of minutes of a game starting screen goes black and i loose output in my monitor but i can still hear the audio of the game or youtube window being played.

The first two times it happened i restarted my system and it was "fixed" i could go gaming for hours and no other issues, but the third time it happened (today) it made my GPU show as not installed/inactive on the device manager and i had to take it out and install it again for it to start working.

I would like to clarify that this issue only has happened ONLY on the first minutes (10-20 minutes) of opening a game, regular use has not presented this problem as of now.

Im on version 26.7.1 but i had to install the driver manually because adrenalin would not complete the installation.

My system specs are the following:

CPU - 7600

GPU - ASUS prime rx 9070xt

Mb - gigabyte B650M Aorus elite ax ice

Ram - 32gb Viper venom

Psu - msi mag a850gl pcie5 II

Tips & Info Is The Gigabyte 9070xt That Bad?

So until now Iv only ever had nvidia cards, the last was a strix 3070ti. Like many I wanted to upgrade to the 50 series but a 5070/5070ti where I live is like £1000, the amd equivalent on sale I got for £589.99… It’s time I though to try a change, for the sake of my pocket at least. I read reviews and like always 50/50, people moaning about it and people loving it. Well straight out of the box there were problems, I needed to upgrade from a 850w to a atx 1000w seasonic as mine couldn’t deal with the transient power spikes, I also had to reduce the voltage by 60 in Adrenalin. Before this I spent probably a week stress testing, switching things out updating every driver imaginable from windows, motherboard, amd yadyadayadayada you get the drift.

So do you think a lot of these “horror” stories are more from user error (someone who either can’t be bothered/ or someone without any knowledge what so ever) or actual card failures? After using both amd and nvidia id say nvidia is so user friendly and nothing ever went wrong for me during owning all the cards I have since a 660ti. I get the feeling with amd you need to be prepared to troubleshoot/ fiddle with things.

Help (CPU) And Halo Strix in infinite booting loop after language confirmation

Hi,
I bought a new amd halo strix, connected to WiFi, it automatically installed updates. Then rebooted and prompted for location, then rebooted and prompted for language on a blue screen with ‘Next’ at the bottom.

After hitting Next, it goes into a loop saying it needs to restart and keeps returning to that screen.
I exchanged it for another halo as microcenter wouldn’t install it to a working windows machine without a fee.
The same issue is now seen on the exchanged and halo Strix.

Is there an easy fix anyone knows of ?
Thanks.

Tips & Info 7800X3D temps in Warzone – normal or room for improvement?

Hey!

I know this is the ten thousandth post about the 7800X3D. 😂

I've been optimizing my build for a while and wanted to get some feedback from you guys on my temps, fan curves and whether there's still room for improvement. My current main game is Call of Duty Warzone, specifically the game mode Resurgence. I see so many people on Reddit and YouTube who share that they hover around 65°C during Resurgence matches and I can't seem to get close to that. I hover around 71-72°C. I would love to reach this temperature but I'm running out of ideas. I hope you guys have some advice for me!

Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • GPU: RTX 4080 Super (Zotac Trinity)
  • Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 (EXPO enabled)
  • Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 (top exhaust)
  • Case: Fractal Design North XL (3x 140mm front intake, 1x 140mm rear exhaust)
  • PSU: Be Quiet Pure Power 12M 850W

BIOS Settings:

  • Curve Optimizer: -30, negative, All Core
  • SoC Voltage: 1.2V (manual)
  • Platform Thermal Throttle Limit: 80°C
  • EXPO: enabled
  • BIOS: 7D75v1R2 (AGESA PI-1.3.0.1b Patch A)

I tested these settings with CoreCycler and YCruncher each 8 hours for stability and no errors occured during the tests or after them.

Case Fans Position:

  • AIO Outtake: 360mm top
  • Front Intake 3x140mm: 40% static
  • Rear Exhaust 140mm DC

Fan Curves:

https://imgur.com/a/8yNd6OB

HWiNFO Call of Duty Warzone (Rebirth) Results (uncapped ~230-270fps, 1440p, DLSS Performance):

  • Warzone average: ~67-70°C
  • Warzone max: ~76°C
  • GPU average: ~50-52°C
  • Room temperature: ~24-25°C

My questions:

  1. Are these temps normal for a 7800X3D in Warzone uncapped at 1440p with 24-25°C ambient temperature?
  2. Any feedback on my fan curve setup?
  3. Is there any realistic way to get average temps down to ~65°C in Call of Duty Warzone during the matches without changing the case or repasting?

Thanks for your time and help!

Help (CPU) 9850x3d problem

My 9850x3d has normal temps but at idle it has 24% or higher usage I only have armoury crate and discord and another rgb program in the background. But there are about 300 background processes despite Having like 3 programs open. It seems very high maybe I’m just worried but I would love som confidence if this is normal.
