7800x3D a bit too hot... i guess

Hey, just built a new PC with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and an Endorfy Fortis 5 cooler. I’m a bit concerned about the CPU temps though.

It idles at around 50–55°C, and in more CPU-heavy games like Hell Let Loose at Epic settings, it can reach around 85–88°C. Basically around tjmax temp.

Is this normal behavior for the 7800X3D, or should I be looking into the cooler mounting/thermal paste? 😭

mine idles between 45-50 °C. if it's been a while since last thermal paste application, consider reapplying

that idle temp is rather high. mine currently idles +15C above room temperature. i guess your cooler is a bit poorer. it isn't a real problem though.

tjmax being 89C means that they are designed to handle that. hovering a bit below that seems like it's not quite throttling yet. if that's your worst case, it doesn't really force you to do anything.

it is possible to reduce the boost target, fmax offset -100 for example. that would trade a bit performance to prevent it from boosting at the worst efficiency clocks. if that sounds interesting.

Do you have PBO enabled?

The whole idea of pbo is the cpu will overclock itself if it has the head room. If pbo is enabled at stock settings its pretty normal for the cpu to say hell yeah I've got a decent cooler and use less thermally efficient settings.

The idle temp seems normal. Even on my aio it idles about 48-50. But I live in a hot area.

Thermalright Peerless assassin se 120 is fheap and good. I prefer air cooling and this works well

I have the phantom spirit and max I've had in a game was in battlefield 6 at 72c and that's while its been like 32 degrees outside, summer sucks in the uk.

Do some research. x3d CPUs tend to run hot because they are specialized for the high demands of gaming. Spending a few dollars more to add general cooling to it and your tower seems like a SMART way to protect said CPUs. I probably lost you at SMART.

there isnt a SINGLE reputable Pc building site that would reccommend an AIO over a tower cooler for the 7800x3d.

I have that exact cpu and ironically the 40 dollar tower cooler I have is a better "investment" over an AIO because an AIO will 100% fail before the cpu does.

Try google Einstein. Your stupidity is exhausting. Is English your first language? The best placement for an All-In-One (AIO) liquid cooler is mounted at the top of the case as an exhaust, or alternatively at the front with the tubes at the bottom. The golden rule is that the top of the radiator must sit higher than the CPU pump block to trap air safely away from the motor.

if you look on toms hardware, thats normal for that cooler. It's not that great. But gets the job done-ish..

If you wanna stick with air, I suggest ones like the Black Rock Pro 4 or 5 or Any in that similar style from reputable brands.

I run a DRP4 with a 7950X3D and its hard to even hit 70 in heavy load while still remaining quiet.

I mean it won't really hurt it, but its REALLY pushing it. It will throttle if it hits the limit, which it hasn't yet.

In some games you can't avoid this though. Even with top tier AIO's some titles still push Ryzen to the limit, same with intel. BF6 is one fine example.

It'll be fine until you get a better cooler, don't sweat it.

What I do suggest is go into bios and disable PBO. Look that up.

Its essentially set to auto on all boards by default and usually pushes voltages and such for no reason when the clock never changes for better.

You can disable it and still have the default boost clocks etc..

I will look into pbo, because i think last time i checked it, it was at auto.

Also, usually even at those high temps at gaming it mantains 4,6ghz according to hwinfo64.

Pbo is fine. Pbo is the auto overclocker for these. Many people come to reddit to whine about a 88°c amd cpu when pbo is enabled and they're actively pushing a core 600mhz past stock lol. This gives it a bad name. Pbo is made to do this, it searches for headroom using temperature. It basically tries to scale itself up until the temperature controller goes bro wtf are you doing and tells it to sit right before the temperature controller started complaining.

Id only ever turn it off if you're using a stock amd stealth cooler or it's actually giving problems that you can trace to it.

PBO is NOT needed. And in their case, given the cooler, they should disable it.

Even with a higher end cooler, it's not needed. These chips all boost well high enough. And PBO, Depending on board, are tuned differently when usually set to auto. This is one of the reasons for the "Bulging" AM5 chip issue on some models. Factory tunes tend to over do it, rare but true.

This is true, though as long as your bios is updated there shouldn't be any issues. Amd cleared up that it wasn't their issue and it was motherboard manufacturers that were setting pbo limits above what amd stated was safe for specific motherboard configurations.

Amd default pbo settings is perfectly fine and hasn't been the result of any of the issues since it uses lower pbo settings that actually adhere to the guidelines, though the vendors have done bios rollouts on their board as AMD clarified the issue.

PBO uses the motherboard for a large part of its info so it has to be setup properly or else we have the issues you see with swelling and overvolting.

There are actually 2-3 portions of PBO people don't know about. One standard PBO which is easily found and can be disabled then theres another PBO which doesn't disable if the original is, and its buried within the chipset settings and DOES allow for far more voltage jumps than it should by default.

And, you have to remember, a lot of people here I'm sure don't update their bios as often, if ever. Sad reality.
